The toxic Hg(II) being released excessively into the water body from various sources has threatened the environment and human health. The aim of this study is to design a rapid and selective adsorbent, and propose an alternative way to dispose the spent adsorbent. To this end, a new material ( MAP ) was designed by inducing the polymerization of m -aminothiophenol onto MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter) surface obtained using cheap diatomite as a silica source and modified by APTES ((3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane), and the spent adsorbent was further converted into an active catalyst for acetophenone synthesis. The adsorption properties of the MAP were systematically explored under different parameters, and the corresponding results were analyzed based on different adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. The study found the removal rate and adsorption capacity of the MAP could reach 96.56% and 242.42 mg/g within 15 min. The coexisting cations showed little competition effect on the removal of Hg(II), and the adsorption capacities after five cycles did not obviously decrease. Kinetic study indicated that the adsorption data were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption equilibrium data followed the Langmuir model. After adsorption studies, the Hg(II)- MAP was used as a catalyst in the reaction of phenylacetylene to acetophenone with high yield of 97.01%. This work not only provides a rapid and selective adsorbent for removal of Hg(II) ions, but also opens a novel avenue for reusing the toxic spent adsorbent for catalytic application.

Multilayered reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was functionalized with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. Raman spectroscopy showed plasma treatment not to substantially alter the chemical structure of rGO and that a wide range of functional nitrogen groups is evenly incorporated into the carbon lattice. The amino-modified rGO was used to design an electrochemical biosensor in which a DNAzyme, substrate DNA and Pb(II) and Hg(II) binding DNA were immobilized on the amino-rGO placed on a gold electrode. The high concentration of amino groups and the rough surface of the rGO favor DNA immobilization. Heavy metal ions are bound to the surface via specific interaction between DNA and the two ions which are detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at a potential of 0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The detection limits for Pb(II) and Hg(II) are as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM, respectively, and the analytical ranges extend from 0.01 to 100 nM. The sensor is highly specific and stable and therefore represents a highly promising tool for use in environmental monitoring.
A nanofilm of reduced graphene oxide was first modified with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. A special DNA was then anchored to the surface to obtain a biosensor for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Hg(II). The sensor has detection limits as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM and is highly selective.

A novel DNA-modified nanocomposite of three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide and chitosan particles (CS@3D-rGO@DNA) was prepared by one-step method and used as a new electrochemical biosensing strategy to detect Hg 2+ in drinking water . This biosensor was fabricated by the chemical coordination of T-Hg 2+ -T between the T-rich oligonucleotide strands contained in the as-prepared CS@3D-rGO@DNA nanocomposite and Hg 2+ , thereby varying the electrochemical signals. The developed electrochemical biosensor exhibited high sensitivity toward the determination of Hg 2+ with a low detection limit of 0.016 nM, ranging from 0.1 nM to 10 nM. This novel biosensor also showed high selectivity, good stability, and repeatability. Hence, this proposed CS@3D-rGO@DNA-based electrochemical strategy is feasible and may offer a simple, rapid, cost-effective, highly selective, and sensitive method for Hg 2+ quantification.

Glutathione (GSH) is commonly used as a diagnostic biomarker for many diseases. In this study, based on carbon quantum dots prepared from dragon fruit peel (D-CQDs) and the T-Hg(II)-T mismatch, a dual-mode biosensor was developed for the detection of GSH. This system consists of two single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). DNA1 was the T-rich sequence; DNA2 was attached to streptavidin-coated magnetic beads and consisted of T-rich and G-rich fragments. Due to the presence of Hg(II), the T-Hg(II)-T mismatch was formed between T-rich fragments of two ssDNA. In the presence of GSH, Hg(II) detached from dsDNA and bound with GSH to form a new complex. The G-rich fragment assembled with the hemin shed from D-CQDs to form the G-quadruplex/hemin complex. At this time, in fluorescence mode, the fluorescence of D-CQDs quenched by hemin could be restored. In colorimetric mode, after the magnetic beads separate, a visual signal could be produced by catalyzing the oxidation of ABTS using the peroxide-like activity of the G-quadruplex/hemin complex. This biosensor in both fluorescence mode and colorimetric mode had excellent selectivity and sensitivity, and the limit of detection was 0.089 µM and 0.26 µM for GSH, respectively. Moreover, the proposed dual-mode biosensor had good application prospects for detection of GSH.

Lignin has attracted attention in water treatment due to its extensive sources, complex structure, environmental friendliness, and functionality. Mannich modification is an effective method for enhancing the lignin's active sites, but it typically requires high temperatures and long reaction times, which limits its scalability for practical application. This study presents a simple, one-step Mannich reaction at room temperature for synthesizing aminated lignin (NAL) with high yield and ultra-high nitrogen content (17.34 %), using triethylenetetramine (TETA) as a modifier. The method effectively leverages TETA's symmetrical polyamine properties and glutaraldehyde (GDA)'s dual crosslinking functionality. Density functional theory (DFT) revealed that the potential and the discrepancy of reactive groups' energy gap (E gap ) were the key factors influencing the synthesis. The as-designed NAL exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 1088.71 mg/g and 909.09 mg/g at 318 K for Hg(II) and Congo red (CR), respectively, that were superior to most reported modified lignin-based adsorbents. NAL also demonstrated robust resistance to ion interference, good reusability, and practical applicability. Notably, the adsorption performance of CR in the Hg(II)-CR binary system was enhanced with an adsorption capacity ratio (R q ) reaching 2.09. XPS, Zeta potential, and DFT calculations revealed that NAL's superior adsorption properties result from multiple interactions, including coordination, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces. Overall, NAL represents a green and highly effective material for environmental remediation with significant research and practical application value.

Accurate detection of Hg(II) in soil is critical due to their severe environmental and heath risks. However, interference from soil organic matter, particularly humic acid (HA), complicates electrochemical detection by forming stable complexes with Hg(II), suppressing signal in square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). This study introduces a novel pretreatment method using oxygen vacancy-rich ZnCo 2 O 4 nanocages (OVs-ZnCo 2 O 4 HNCs) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and generate sulfate radicals (·SO 4 − ). These radicals disrupt HA-Hg(II) complexes, restoring Hg(II) to its free, electroactive state for accurate detection. Optimized parameters, including ZnCo 2 O 4 loading (9 mg), PMS concentration (6 mg/L), and activation pH (3), enabled maximum signal recovery within 1.5 min. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the efficient catalytic activity of OVs-ZnCo 2 O 4 HNCs. The method demonstrated high sensitivity (LOD = 0.27 μg/L) and robustness in real soil samples, highlighting its potential for environmental monitoring and heavy metal analysis.

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor is described for the detection of microRNA (miRNA-155) based on tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) functionalized metal organic framework (RuMOF) materials. The material was prepared by a solvothermal method and was found to be stable even in acidic solution. However, it is selectively and sensitively disassembled by Hg(II) ions, resulting in the release of large quantities of Ru(II)(bpy) 3 ions, which produces a strong ECL signal. In view of the ion-selective disassembly and release and strand displacement process, an ultrasensitive ECL sensing method was established for detection of microRNAs. In the presence of the target, the hairpin structure of H1 can open and hybridize with the hairpin probe H2 to form a more stable H1-H2 duplex structure than the H1-target hybrid. The target of hybridization to H1 was immediately freed from the structure and the released target re-entered the new hairpin assembly target recovery process. The remaining H2 single fragment can bind to the I-RuMOFs-conjugates. The more hairpin probes H1, the more I-RuMOFs-conjugates load the DNA fragments, leading to the signal amplification. The method works in the 0.8 f. to 1.0 nM miRNA-155 concentration range and has a detection limit of 0.3 fM. The assay is sensitive, fairly specific and remarkably stable. In our perception, it offers an attractive tool for the sensitive detection of microRNAs in clinical samples.
An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) based biosensor is described for the detection of microRNA (miRNA-155) based on the use of a metal organic framework functionalized with ruthenium(II)tris(bipyridine) that was deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with gold nanoparticles.

A label-free and enzyme-free signal-on biosensor for Hg(II) ions was constructed based on T-Hg(II)-T nanoladders and fluorescent DNA-templated silver nanoclusters/graphene oxide nanocomposites (DNA-AgNCs/GO). The T-rich sequences (P1 and P2) were used to capture Hg(II) and form the T-Hg(II)-T nanoladders. C 6 G 5 C 6 was extended at the 5′ end of P1, used as a template for synthesizing fluorescent DNA-AgNCs. In the presence of mercury ions , the T-Hg(II)-T nanoladders significantly enhanced the emission of AgNCs. GO can attract free P1-C 6 G 5 C 6 and P2 that were not involved in the formation of T-Hg(II)-T nanoladders, thus employed as the energy acceptor to quench the background fluorescence of AgNCs. The fluorescence enhancement induced by mercury ions can be used for quantitative detection of Hg(II) over the range 0.1–30 nM with a detection limit as low as 7.35 pM. This method was used to detect Hg(II) in the spiked samples of Songhua River water and grass carp, with the recoveries of 97.61%− 103.79% and 96.52%− 105.58% respectively, consistent with the results from atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Obviously, in this assay, enzyme-free signal amplification and signal identification are integrated in the ingenious design of nucleic acid sequences, thus achieving the label-free fluorescence detection of mercury ions.

The conventional methods for detecting Hg 2+ ions are generally impaired by low sensitivity, a high limit of detection (LOD), and the long detection time required. In this work, we develop a novel solution gated graphene transistor (SGGT) based on carbon dots doped with N and S elements (N/S CDs) as gate electrode probes. The prepared N/S CDs, which are 3–5 nm in diameter, are first modified at the gate of the SGGT through covalent bonding that specifically recognizes Hg 2+ ions. The SGGT is then used as a Hg 2+ sensor, exhibiting good selectivity, ultrahigh sensitivity, good reproducibility, and a short detection time. The SGGT sensor has an excellent linear detection range, from 0.1 fM to 1 nM. The LOD can reach 28 aM, which is far lower than that of conventional detection methods. Moreover, the SGGT sensor also has a rapid response time of ∼ 40 s. Finally, the ability to analyze real water samples and serum samples is demonstrated.
