Fe-based layered double hydroxides carbon cathode modulates oxygen reduction pathways and HO formation mechanism in electro-peroxone system

Zekun Dong,Jiao Yang,Jie Yao,Yu Tang,Yan Zhang

Electro-peroxone (EP) is an emerging technology that combines electrochemistry and O 3 to remove contaminants. However, conventional carbon cathodes primarily contribute to the synthesis of H 2 O 2 in the system, which may scavenge HO . Herein, a series of Fe-based layered double hydroxides (LDH) was loaded onto graphite felt cathodes to strengthen the removal of organic contaminants. The EP system with CuFe-LDH/GF cathode (EP-CuFe-LDH/GF) demonstrated the highest removal rate (91.2 % within 20 min) of oxalic acid (OA), a typical ozone-resistance substance, approximately twice that of the EP-GF system. HO was identified the main reactive species. A new pathway for O 2 reduction and the generation of HO was found. The loading of CuFe-LDH altered the reduction pathway of O 2 on the GF cathode from 2e − to 1e − or 4e − process. As a result, HO was produced by the combination of O 3 and O 2 − instead of O 3 and H 2 O 2 , which avoided the quenching of HO by H 2 O 2 and enhanced the removal of OA. Moreover, the breaking complexation by O 3 , cathodic O 3 reduction and metal-OH catalyzed O 3 processes also contributed to the HO formation. Furthermore, the system could efficiently remove OA across a broad pH range of 3.0 to 9.0, addressing the poor performance of conventional EP systems under acidic conditions. Overall, the finding of this significant mechanism advances the understanding of organic pollutants removal and broadens the potential applications of EP system.

Tricolor Upconversion Phosphors of LiYO2:RE3+/Yb3+ (RE = Tm, Ho, Eu) for Metamerism Anti-Counterfeiting and 3D Volumetric Display

Shanshan Zhao,Dechao Yu,Benchun Li,Saima Kanwal,Tiantian Shen,Jincheng Wu,Songlin Zhuang,Dawei Zhang

The development of blue/green/red tricolor upconversion (UC) phosphors under invisible light irradiation has attracted significant interest in emerging applications such as anti-counterfeiting, three-dimensional (3D) optical data storage, and solid-state 3D displays. In this study, a series of LiYO 2 :RE 3+ ,Yb 3+ (RE = Tm, Ho, Eu) phosphors are successfully prepared via first precipitation process followed by calcination, and completely optimized for efficient tricolor UC luminescence with 980 nm laser excitation. Mechanisms involving two- or three-photon absorption processes and low-phonon-energy-suppressed multi-phonon relaxation have been proposed for Ho 3+ (Eu 3+ )/Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ codoping, respectively. In addition, the RE 3+ (Yb 3+ ) concentration-induced phase transition of the LiYO 2 host is discussed for interesting possibilities in spectral regulation. Based on the broad color gamut achieved by the tricolor UC phosphor mixture, homochromatic and polychromatic metamerisms are experimentally fabricated via screen printing for high-level anti-counterfeiting and information security. Moreover, for a proof-of-concept demonstration, prototypes of 3D optical data storage and volumetric displays are constructed by embedding tricolor UC mixtures and their 3D printed patterns in polydimethylsiloxane. It is believed that the continuous exploration of tricolor UC under invisible light excitation for metamerism anti-counterfeiting and 3D displays can promote the development of high-level information security and advanced volumetric display technologies.

Ginkgolide B-loaded detachable microneedles attenuate androgenetic alopecia by suppressing endoplasmic reticulum stress via the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway

Zhan Wang,Cheng Zheng,Wenzhen Li,Kaung Myat Kyaw,Yunmin Zhu,Yihan Lin,Zhen Lin,Di Wu,Zhiqi Hu,Yang Sun,Kaitao Li

Introduction Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common form of hair loss, lacks ideal therapies due to the limitations of current drugs. Natural compounds with low toxicity and good biocompatibility present promising alternatives. Ginkgolide B (GB), a bioactive component of Ginkgo biloba , possesses multiple biological activities, yet its efficacy and mechanism against AGA remain unexplored. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the hair growth-promoting effect of GB in a dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced hair loss model and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism. Additionally, a novel detachable microneedle delivery system was developed and evaluated to overcome GB's poor transdermal permeability, thereby enhancing its therapeutic efficacy. Methods The AGA microenvironment was first simulated using DHT-stimulated human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) in vitro. The molecular mechanism by which GB improves the secretory function of HDPCs was investigated through network pharmacology, western blot, transmission electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence. Subsequently, a detachable microneedle system was designed, in which GB was encapsulated in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres and integrated with the sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SCD)-based matrix (GB@MS-MN). The therapeutic efficacy of this system was evaluated in a DHT-induced hair loss model. Results GB rescued DHT-induced dysfunction in HDPCs, reversing the aberrant secretion of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and dickkopf-1 (DKK1). Mechanistically, GB alleviated DHT-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in HDPCs by activating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway. And GB promoted hair growth in DHT-induced hair loss mice. The GB@MS-MN system demonstrated excellent mechanical properties and targeted follicular delivery and showed superior hair growth promotion compared to free GB and minoxidil. It effectively suppressed follicular ERS, with no observed systemic toxicity. Conclusion In summary, this study confirms that GB protects HDPCs function by suppressing DHT-induced ERS through activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Furthermore, a detachable microneedle delivery system based on a PLGA-SCD composite effectively overcomes the transdermal barrier of GB and demonstrates superior hair-promoting efficacy.

Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. polyphenols attenuate acrylamide-induced cerebral injury via dual modulation of Nrf2/HO-1 and MAPK pathways

Haixia Han,Juanjuan Gao,Quan Sun,Dandan Tong,Jian Liu,Xiuli Yang,Jingjing Sun,Yue Cui,Juan Wang,Zuoshan Feng,Mingxi Jia

BACKGROUND Acrylamide (ACR), an environmental neurotoxicant prevalent in thermally processed foods, contributes to brain injury via oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. The cumulative effects of long-term low-dose exposure are particularly alarming. As a traditional food ingredient, the inflorescence of Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. is rich in polyphenolic compounds that exhibit significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study systematically evaluated the neuroprotective potential of Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. polyphenols (CTNP) against chronic low-dose ACR exposure in mice. RESULTS Behavioral analyses demonstrated that CTNP (0.25–1.00 g kg −1 ) significantly ameliorated ACR-induced gait abnormalities and restored voluntary activity. CTNP mitigated neuronal misalignment and loss of synaptic density in the hippocampal CA1/CA3 regions and markedly reduced serum levels of brain injury markers MBP and GFAP by 30.6% and 41.7%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that CTNP attenuated oxidative damage via activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, leading to decreased brain reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels while enhancing catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities. Furthermore, CTNP suppressed MAPK pathway-mediated neuroinflammation, reducing pro-inflammatory factors such as COX-2, TNF- α and IL-1 β . CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate that CTNP, as diet-derived bioactives, mitigate ACR neurotoxicity through coordinated modulation of Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant and MAPK anti-inflammatory pathways, supporting their potential as a functional food component for preventing environmental toxicant-associated neural damage. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Divaroside alleviates barium chloride-induced arrhythmia by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 axis to modulate autophagy and calcium homeostasis

Chunge Zhang,Shuai Huang,Wenxin Zhang,Hongbo Teng,Yuna Shao,Yihua Zhang,Shihang Ren,Qi Wu,Yan Zhao,Zhaowei Yan

Background Acanthopanax sessiliflorus ( A. sessiliflorus ) extract has been used in various traditional Chinese medicines and compound preparations for the treatment of arrhythmia. Our preliminary studies have demonstrated that A. sessiliflorus extract exerts significant protective effects against arrhythmia induced by barium chloride. The present study aims to elucidate the bioactive components of A. sessiliflorus and to investigate the underlying mechanisms by which it mitigates barium chloride-induced arrhythmia. Methods Network pharmacology was employed to predict the pharmacological profiles of chemical constituents from A. sessiliflorus, followed by a systematic screening of their biological activities. Subsequently, a barium chloride-induced arrhythmia model was established, and the potential therapeutic mechanisms were analyzed using transcriptomics. Functional and histopathological analyses of the rat hearts were performed. Western blot was used to detect the expression levels of the Nrf2/HO-1 axis, connexins, ion channels, and autophagy-related proteins in myocardial tissue and NRVMs. Subsequently, PCR, immunofluorescence, co-immunoprecipitation, and molecular docking were employed to verify the involvement of the targets in the intervention of arrhythmia. Results The results showed that after treatment with divaroside, the arrhythmia and redox system imbalance induced by BaCl₂ in rats were significantly restored. Divaroside can inhibit calcium overload by regulating the expression levels of RyR2 and SERCA2a in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, serving as a means to alleviate arrhythmia. In addition, we have confirmed that autophagy plays a crucial role in arrhythmia, and divaroside can activate autophagy, thereby protecting cardiomyocytes from BaCl₂-induced damage. Finally, it was confirmed that divaroside can weaken the interaction between the Keap1-Nrf2 complex and promote the nuclear translocation of Nrf2, activating the Nrf2/HO-1 axis and regulating the aforementioned pathways to counteract arrhythmia. Conclusion This study suggests that divaroside prevents the occurrence of arrhythmia by activating autophagy and reducing abnormal calcium ion homeostasis through the Nrf2/HO-1 axis.

pH-driven HO•/Cu(III) trade-off mediated by surface CuxO shell in zerovalent copper-activated peracetic acid process

Jiaqi Ding,Xiaolin Xiong,Huanhuan Shi,Yuxiao Mu,Haojun Ji,Jingwen Wang

pH switches reactive species in ZVC/PAA: HO • at pH 3, Cu(III) at pH 7. • Surface Cu x O shell is the key site governing the generation of reactive species. • HO • -dominated system rapidly removes diverse sulfonamides with non-selectivity. • Cu(III) system selectively degrades sulfonamides containing heterocyclic rings. • ZVC demonstrates higher reusability and lower Cu ions leaching at pH 7. Zerovalent copper (ZVC) has garnered considerable attention in Fenton-like reactions, but the surface properties of ZVC that regulate reactive species (RSs) generation remain elusive. Herein, we systematically investigated the pH-dependent regulation of hydroxyl radical (HO • ) and high-valent copper (Cu(III)) generation during peracetic acid (PAA) activation by ZVC for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). Characterization results revealed that ZVC has a core-shell structure, in which the surface copper oxide (Cu x O) layer serves as the primary active site. Theoretical and experimental analyses elucidated that pH modulates the surface properties of ZVC. At pH 3, the protonation of Cu x O promotes the generation of HO • in the ZVC/PAA system; conversely, under neutral conditions (pH 7.0), the unprotonated state favors the formation of Cu(III) as the dominant RSs. This trade-off between HO • and Cu(III) generation leads to distinct degradation performance for SAs degradation. HO • -dominated system achieved non-selective removal (>96 %) of various SAs; whereas the Cu(III) pathway selectively degraded SAs with heterocyclic rings at pH 7. The Cu(III) pathway outperformed the HO • system in terms of humic acid tolerance and catalyst recyclability in the ZVC/PAA process. This work clarifies the decisive role of surface protonation of ZVC in steering HO • versus Cu(III) pathways and provides a theoretical basis for designing pH‑specific Fenton-like reaction processes. Multifunctional BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles: an investigation on the emission color tuning, thermosensitivity, and bioimaging

Xinxin Yan,Tiesheng Li,Linna Guo,Honglei Li,Penglei Chen,Minghua Liu

Pure cubic phase and uniform BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by coprecipitation. The growth mechanism of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs was proposed based on evolution analysis of the time-dependent morphology, in which BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ was formed through the growth process of “nucleation to crystallization and Ostwald ripening”. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties and mechanism of BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ under dual-wavelength excitation were also systematically investigated. The emission intensity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ by dual-wavelength excitation (λ = 980 nm + 1550 nm) was 1.49 times more than that excited by 1550 nm or 980 nm individually. Furthermore, the properties of the bright white and multicolor UCL showed that yellow, purple, green, or pinkish light could be observed by controlling the doping concentration of Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Er, Tm, and Ho), indicating that they had potential applications in backlight sources of color displays and security labeling. The temperature sensitivity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ exhibited a downward tendency and its max value was about 0.0036 K−1 at 273 K. Cell toxicity tests showed that the UCNPs in phospholipid aqueous solution presented low cytotoxicity. Also, in vivo imaging and X-ray imaging revealed that the BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs had deep penetration and high contrast, which meant it could be used as a potential probe and contrast agent in in vivo optical bioimaging.

Blastocyst-Derived Lactic Acid Regulates Uterine Epithelial Receptivity and Stromal Decidualization via the HIF1α-HO-1-Heme Metabolic Axis

Wen-Xu Yao,Yao-Dan Ma,Shi-Yao Ding,Jian Lu,Hao-Lan Tang,Zeng-Ming Yang

Successful embryo implantation requires intimate crosstalk between the blastocyst and the uterine epithelium within a defined window of receptivity. However, the metabolic signals that mediate this process in mammals remain poorly understood. In this study, pregnant mice, primary uterine cell culture and uterine epithelial organoids were used to examine the regulation and function of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) during mouse embryo implantation and decidualization. We demonstrate that embryo-derived lactic acid drives heme catabolism and regulates epithelial receptivity in mice through a hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) -heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling axis. Specifically, lactic acid stabilizes HIF1α to induce HO-1 expression in uterine epithelial cells by promoting von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) nucleolar sequestration and downregulating PHD2/3. Additionally, lactic acid suppresses the transcriptional repressor BACH1, further facilitating HO-1 induction. At physiological heme levels, HO-1-derived bilirubin promotes epithelial receptivity by increasing phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3) and downregulating MUC1. A low dose of hemin promotes epithelial receptivity and decidualization, whereas a high dose of hemin suppresses these processes. Pharmacological inhibition of HO-1 in mice markedly reduces implantation sites, establishing the functional necessity of this pathway. However, when heme levels exceed the regulatory capacity of HO-1, epithelial dysfunction ensues, characterized by reduced p-STAT3 and elevated MUC1, which ultimately disrupts implantation. Consistent with this, chronic heme exposure by oral gavage in mice increases uterine heme levels and upregulates BACH1, thereby suppressing HO-1 and trapping the uterus in a non-receptive state, causing implantation failure. Our findings define a lactic acid-HIF1α-HO-1-heme metabolic checkpoint that couples glycolytic signaling to heme regulation and endometrial receptivity. Dysregulation of this checkpoint may contribute to implantation disorders associated with heme stress, providing mechanistic insights into heme stress-related uterine receptivity failure.

Direct current (dc) bias effect on the dielectric constant of Dy and Ho-doped BaTiO3-based ceramic and MLCCs

Zhiqiang Li,Shiguang Yan,Jiake Xia,Fei Cao,Xuefeng Chen,YunXiong Song,Yonghong Chen,Zhi-Sheng Lin,Genshui Wang

With the increasing demand for the miniaturization, high capacitance and high reliability of the Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC), the thickness of single dielectric layer is less than 1 μm and the original partical size of the powder has reached the scale less than 300 nm. In this paper, BaTiO 3 powder of various partical sizes (150–500 nm) was modified with Dy and Ho through a chemical coating method. The dense and uniform ceramics in accordance with EIA X7R-type temperature stability were sintered under low oxygen partial pressure and good dielectric properties of dielectric constant >2000 and dielectric loss <1% were obtained. The grain size effect on the dielectric properties under various dc-bias field were systematically investigated. It is found that the fine-grain ceramic exhibits a lower absolute change of the dielectric constant and a higher dc-bias stability. Furthermore, the modified 150 nm BaTiO 3 powders was made into 1210-type MLCCs, and the dielectric behavior of the MLCCs with different dc-fields and ac-fields were study over −55 °C–125 °C. It is found that the ac electric field had a greater influence on the dielectric properties at room temperature and below, and the dielectric constant variation under a dc-bias field was also greatly advanced for the modified fine-grain MLCCs. The results provide a reference for the design of the next generation of BME-MLCCs.

High-entropy rare earth phosphates (REPO4, RE = Ho, Tm, Yb, Lu, Dy, Er and Y) with excellent comprehensive properties

Peixiong Zhang,Enhui Wang,Chunyu Guo,Tao Yang,Xinmei Hou

High-entropy rare earth phosphates (HE REPO 4 , RE = Ho, Tm, Yb, Lu, Dy, Er and Y) with xenotime structure have been successfully synthesized and comprehensively characterized to evaluate their feasibility as thermal/environmental barrier coatings (T/EBCs) applied in SiC f /SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiC-CMCs). HE REPO 4 show good chemical compatibility with SiO 2 at 1400 °C and excellent high-temperature stability up to 1750 °C. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of HE (6RE 1/6 )PO 4 is 5.9 × 10 −6 /°C ranging from room temperature to 900 °C, which is close to that of SiC-CMCs. Compared with single-component REPO 4 , the thermal conductivity of HE (6RE 1/6 )PO 4 (from 5.1 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100 °C to 2.8 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 1300 °C) is significantly reduced benefiting from larger lattice distortion. These allow HE REPO 4 to be a potential candidate as T/EBCs applied in SiC-CMCs.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester attenuates osteoarthritis progression by activating NRF2/HO‑1 and inhibiting the NF‑κB signaling pathway

Weichao Sun,Wei Xie,Dixi Huang,Yinxing Cui,Jiaji Yue,Qifei He,Luoyong Jiang,Jianyi Xiong,Wei Sun,Qian Yi

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative disease affecting the joints, and inflammation appears to play a critical role in the initiation and progression of OA. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a natural flavonoid compound, has anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant functions. However, its anti‑inflammatory effects on OA and the underlying mechanisms of action of CAPE in the treatment of OA remain elusive. Therefore, the present study investigated the anti‑inflammatory effects of CAPE on IL‑1β‑stimulated chondrocytes in vitro and surgically induced rat models of OA in vivo. In vitro, CAPE reduced the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase‑2 in IL‑1β‑stimulated chondrocytes, as well as the extracellular secretion of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 in the cell culture supernatants. In addition, CAPE attenuated the degradation of extracellular matrix by increasing the expression of aggrecan and collagen II, and decreasing the expression of MMP3, MMP13 and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif‑5. Furthermore, CAPE attenuated NF‑κB signaling and activated the nuclear factor erythroid 2‑related factor 2/heme oxygenase‑1 signaling pathway in IL‑1β‑stimulated chondrocytes. In vivo, CAPE protected cartilage from destruction and delayed the progression of OA in rats. Taken together, the findings of the present study indicated that CAPE may be a potential therapeutic agent for the prevention or treatment of OA.

Curcumin activates Nrf2/HO-1 signaling to relieve diabetic cardiomyopathy injury by reducing ROS in vitro and in vivo

Xia Wu,Xueliang Zhou,Songqing Lai,Jichun Liu,Jianwei Qi

The hallmark feature of Diabetes mellitus (DM) is hyperglycemia which can lead to excess production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the myocardium, contributing to diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor2 (Nrf2), a transcriptional activator, enhances its ability to resist oxidative stress by activating multiple downstream anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory proteins, and detoxifying enzymes. However, the mechanism of Nrf2 signaling in HG-induced DCM is unclear. In this study, we used HG pretreated H9c2 cells as the experimental basis in vitro, and established a high fat-diet, streptozotocin (STZ) induced Type 2 diabetic rat model in vivo. Meanwhile, we used shRNA-Nrf2 and curcumin (CUR) (as an activator) to affect H9c2 cells, to verify the role of the Nrf2 signaling pathway in DCM. The results showed that the excessive production of ROS caused by HG, which could inhibit the activation of Nrf2-related signaling, resulting in a decrease in cell energy metabolism and an increase in cell apoptosis. Surprisingly, we found that the activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway significantly increased cardiomyocyte viability, reduced ROS formation, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and inhibited cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In conclusion, these findings conclusively infer that CUR activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway exerts myocardial protection by reducing ROS formation.
