Biomass pyrolysis and in-line steam reforming for hydrogen production is one of the effective ways to promote the sustainable development of global energy. In this study, Co was recovered from the cathode material of LiCoO 2 batteries using the carbon thermal reduction method, and used for biomass pyrolysis and in-line steam reforming for hydrogen production. First, the cathode material was reduced using coconut shell carbon (CC), and it was revealed that cobalt presented in the catalyst prepared at the reduction temperature of 800 °C, giving the hydrogen yield of 24.9 mmol/g. Other carbon source like graphite carbon (GIC) and straw pyrolytic carbon (SC) were then investigated and it was found that a much higher temperature (>800 °C) was required for the reduction of the cathode material with GIC and the catalyst prepared by SC reduction was less effective than that using CC reduction. Considering the great influence of the pore structure of the carbon material on the reduction, activated carbon (AC) was obtained from SC using KOH activation. With a better distribution of cobalt on the carrier prepared by AC reduction, the highest hydrogen yield of 28.3 mmol/g was achieved with the mass ratio of cathode material and AC of 10:3. This study provides a viable avenue for the application of spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials in the production of hydrogen from biomass.

Selective metal recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries has attracted wide attention since a high recovery rate and minimized environmental impact can be expected. However, either high temperature or high chemical consumption in order to realize effective lithium recovery is required, as the cathode inherent with high physiochemical stability, especially when the cobalt content is high (e.g. LiCoO 2 ). Herein, we discover that Lewis acids in cathode scraps induce phase transition from LiCoO 2 to Co(CoO 2 ) 2 and Li + , thus realizing fully selective recovery of lithium in a mild environment. Since Lewis acids are produced from scraps, the chemical consumption is reduced. Meanwhile, relying on the mild phase transition caused by Lewis acids, the morphology of the waste are maintained in the Co(CoO 2 ) 2 products, resulting in a comparable electrochemical performance with commercial Co 3 O 4 anode materials. Consequently, a closed-loop route for recycling cathode scrap is established at mild conditions with low cost and environmental impact.

Sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) are promising candidates in the next generation of energy storage technology; the voltage mismatch and the resulting side reactions at the interface between the cathode and the solid electrolyte, however, dramatically deteriorate their cycling performance. Herein, for the first time, we report that the chemical interaction between LiCoO2 (LCO) and TiO2 can be regulated by two additives, carbon and Li2CO3, which in situ form a continuous ultrathin pure-phase Li2CoTi3O8 (LCTO) layer with a stable 3D network of spinel structures, relatively low electronic conductivity (2.5 × 10−8 S cm−1) and high lithium diffusion coefficient (DLi+ = 8.22 × 10−7 cm2 s−1) on the surface of LCO. When assembled in ASSLIBs, such an LCTO layer functions as an interlayer between the LCO and the Li10GeP2S12 solid electrolyte (LGPS). As a consequence, the original interface LCO/LGPS is substituted by two new interfaces LCO/LCTO and LCTO/LGPS. DFT calculations indicate that, compared with the LCO/LGPS, the new interfaces are not only thermodynamically and electrochemically more compatible, but also have higher interfacial affinity. Therefore, the relevant ASSLIB exhibits evidently reduced interfacial impedance, and it also displays a high initial capacity of 140 mA h g−1 and a reversible discharge specific capacity of 116 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at room temperature (0.1C). In comparison, the ASSLIB assembled without the LCTO interlayer delivers an initial capacity of 98 mA h g−1 and only retains 22.4% capacity after 100 cycles (0.1C). Even at a high cutoff voltage (4.5 V vs. Li/Li+), the ASSLIB with the LCTO interlayer could also exhibit a high initial capacity of 180 mA h g−1 and a remarkable retention of 132 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with Li metal anodes or Si anodes are promising candidates to achieve high energy density and improved safety, but they suffer from undesirable lithium dendrite growth or huge volume expansion, respectively. Here we synthesize a hard-carbon-stabilized Li–Si alloy anode in which sintering of Si leads to the transformation of micro-metre particles into dense continuum. A 3D ionic-electronic-conductive network composed of plastically deformable Li-rich phases (Li 15 Si 4 and LiC 6 ) that enlarges active area and relieves stress concentration is created in the anode, leading to improved electrode kinetics and mechanical stability. With the hard-carbon-stabilized Li-Si anode, full cells using LiCoO 2 or LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathodes and Li 6 PS 5 Cl electrolyte achieve favourable rate capability and cycle stability. In particular, the ASSB with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 at high loading of 5.86 mAh cm −2 delivers 5,000 cycles at 1 C (5.86 mA cm −2 ), demonstrating the potential of using hard-carbon-stabilized Li–Si alloy anodes for practical applications of ASSBs.

In traditional operations of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), a small thin lithium metal circular disk is employed as a lithium metal anode (LMA). However, ASSLMBs with a circular-disk LMA often fail in <150 cycles with low capacity retention. In this work, we developed a new ring-shaped LMA to improve cyclability. Full cells consisting of a ring-shaped LMA, a LiCoO2 cathode, and a Li6PS5Cl electrolyte maintain good capacity retention of 83.65% at 0.3C after 300 cycles. Moreover, in situ L-band electron paramagnetic resonance imaging (EPRI) showed that fewer Li dendrites are formed on a ring-shaped LMA. This work highlights the importance of the design of the shape of the LMA to mitigate the growth of lithium dendrites and shows that L-band EPRI is a useful technique for ASSLMBs.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is a promising matrix for solid polymer electrolyte , but its inferior mechanical strength and relative low oxidation stability especially at elevated temperatures hamper its further applications. A novel fluorinated polycarbonate polymer of poly(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro butyl carbonate) with cyano ends (cPTFBC) was synthesized for the first time and was composited with PEO based electrolyte by physical blending to resolve the above issues. The addition of cPTFBC can effectively enhance the mechanical strength at elevated temperature. In addition, the as-prepared PEO-cPTFBC based electrolyte shows an enlarged electrochemical window up to 4.7 V at 60 °C and a high Li ion transference number (0.33). More importantly, the PEO-cPTFBC based all solid state polymer electrolyte presents excellent compatibility with lithium metal and improved LiCoO 2 /Li battery performance compared with PEO based electrolyte. These outstanding performance of the cPTFBC based electrolyte make it promising as solid polymer electrolyte for lithium metal batteries .

The definite aim of the present paper is to present some novel methods that use oxygen-free roasting and wet magnetic separation to in situ recycle of cobalt, Lithium Carbonate and Graphite from mixed electrode materials. The in situ recycling means to change waste into resources by its own components, which is an idea of “waste + waste → resources.” After mechanical scraping the mixed electrode materials enrich powders of LiCoO 2 and graphite. The possible reaction between LiCoO 2 and graphite was obtained by thermodynamic analysis. The feasibility of the reaction at high temperature was studied with the simultaneous thermogravimetry analysis under standard atmospheric pressure. Then the oxygen-free roasting/wet magnetic separation method was used to transfer the low added value mixed electrode materials to high added value products. The results indicated that, through the serious technologies of oxygen-free roasting and wet magnetic separation, mixture materials consist with LiCoO 2 and graphite powders are transferred to the individual products of cobalt, Lithium Carbonate and Graphite. Because there is not any chemical solution added in the process, the cost of treating secondary pollution can be saved. This study provides a theoretical basis for industrial-scale recycling resources from spent LIBs .

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with a Li metal anode are expected to be one of the most promising energy storage systems to achieve high energy density. However, the interfacial instability between the Li metal anode and solid-state electrolyte (SSE) limits the rate capability and cycling stability of ASSBs. The main issue is the formation of voids at the Li/SSE interface during Li stripping due to the slow diffusion of Li within the bulk Li metal, then increasing internal cell resistance and inducing the formation of lithium dendrites. To address these issues, a composite Li anode (LAO) composed by Li–Ag alloy and Li2O is constructed by mixing the stoichiometric metal Li and Ag2O directly. LAO anode is capable of improving bulk Li diffusion kinetics and inhibiting the formation of interfacial voids effectively, achieving a high critical current density over 1.5 mA cm–2 and long stable cycling over 1000 h at 1 mA cm–2. The ASSBs, employing LAO as the anode, Li6PS5Cl as the SSE, and LiCoO2 as the cathode, exhibit superior rate capability and stable cycling over 4000 cycles at 5 C. Moreover, ASSBs can operate stably with a high LiCoO2 loading of 17.8 mg cm–2 for more than 100 cycles at 0.2 C.

LiCoO2 is widely used in lithium-ion batteries. Innovatively, this study reveals that by employing a synergistic strategy of Li volatilization and anion doping, LiCoO2-based materials demonstrate exceptional performance as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. At high temperatures, Li volatilization forms a Co3O4 phase. Concurrently, anionic doping is achieved by substituting F ions for O ions. The synergy of these two strategies increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the formation of heterogeneous interfaces, effectively enhancing the adsorption, dissociation, and diffusion rates of oxygen, thereby significantly improving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of LiCoO2 (LCO). LCOF1 (LiCoO1.9F0.1+Co3O4) exhibits an oxygen diffusion coefficient (Dchem) and surface exchange coefficient (Kchem) of 8.85 × 10–5 cm2 s–1 and 7.61 × 10–3 cm s–1, respectively, which are 45% and 26% higher than those of undoped LCO. Furthermore, at 800 °C, LCOF1 achieves a PPD of 0.86 W cm–2 and an Rp as low as 0.012 Ω cm2, representing improvements of 110% in PPD and a reduction of 78.6% in Rp compared to LCO. These findings indicate that the synergistic effect of Li volatilization and F doping is an effective strategy for enhancing the performance of Li-containing cathodes, offering valuable perspectives for the development of high-performance SOFC cathodes.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with potentially improved energy density and safety have been recognized as the next-generation energy storage technology. However, their performances at subzero temperatures are rarely investigated, with rate-limiting process/mechanisms unidentified. Herein , the rate-limiting process/mechanisms for -40℃ ASSBs are accurately identified/analyzed by developing a standard test-analysis flow model. We reveal that the rate-limiting processes of LiCoO 2 (LCO)+sulfide solid electrolyte (SE) composite cathode are the sluggish ion transport across unfavorable interfacial reaction layer and charge transfer at damaged LCO cathode surface. After inserting Li 2 ZrO 3 (LZO) coating layer to suppress interfacial reactions, the rate-limiting process of LCO@LZO+sulfide SE composite cathode turns into the arduous ion transport across the interphase composed of the self-decomposition products of sulfide SE. Interestingly, by replacing sulfide SE with halide SE, LCO+halide SE composite cathode delivers fast charge transfer and the ion conduction through the thick SE separator becomes the rate-limiting process, thus enabling a superior capacity retention rate (41.4 %) at -40℃. Furthermore, the capacity retention of ASSB coupling LCO+halide SE composite cathode with Si anode can be boosted from 28.9 % to 38.6 % at -40℃ by employing superionic conductor with low activation energy. These successful identifications/modulations on rate-limiting process/mechanism and improvements on low-temperature performance demonstrate the significant role of this test-analysis flow in propelling the development of low-temperature ASSBs.

Halide-type solid electrolytes (SEs) have emerged as a new class of promising Li + conductors due to their high ionic conductivity , good deformability and excellent oxidation stability. Nevertheless, to move a step closer to the application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), the poor compatibility against metal anode for halide SEs needs to be addressed. Herein, a dual-halogen trigonal SE, Li 2 ZrCl 6- x F x is developed. With the proper incorporation of F, the SE can maintain high ionic conductivity and considerable moisture stability. Moreover, protective-layer-free ASSLBs prepared from the single SE and high-voltage cathode materials LiCoO 2 can be reversibly cycled in the voltage window of 2.52–4.32 V (versus Li + /Li) with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 95.57%, and maintain 76% of the initial capacity after 70 cycles. The good electrochemical performance is originated from the in-situ formed interface protective layer between SE and Li alloy, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and computational characterizations. This work indicates that developing mixed halogen-based SEs is a cost-effective way to improve the stability of halide SEs against alkali metal anode, and could accelerate the application for high-voltage ASSLBs.

High-voltage and fast-charging LiCoO 2 (LCO) is key to high-energy/power-density Li-ion batteries. However, unstable surface structure and unfavorable electronic/ionic conductivity severely hinder its high-voltage fast-charging cyclability. Here, we construct a Li/Na-B-Mg-Si-O-F-rich mixed ion/electron interface network on the 4.65 V LCO electrode to enhance its rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Specifically, the resulting artificial hybrid conductive network enhances the reversible conversion of Co 3+/4+ /O 2−/ n − redox by the interfacial ion–electron cooperation and suppresses interface side reactions, inducing an ultrathin yet compact cathode electrolyte interphase. Simultaneously, the derived near-surface Na + /Mg 2+ /Si 4+ -pillared local intercalation structure greatly promotes the Li + diffusion around the 4.55 V phase transition and stabilizes the cathode interface. Finally, excellent 3 C (1 C = 274 mA g −1 ) fast charging performance is demonstrated with 73.8% capacity retention over 1000 cycles. Our findings shed new insights to the fundamental mechanism of interfacial ion/electron synergy in stabilizing and enhancing fast-charging cathode materials.
