In this work, a new strategy to enhance upconversion emission has been realized for the first time, based on β-NaGdF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals (UCNC) using tridoping with magnesium (Mg2+) ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectroscopy data indicated successful incorporation of the Mg2+ ions in β-NaGdF4:Yb3+, Er3+. The effect of the Mg2+ tridopant on the crystal structure, upconversion luminescence, and paramagnetization in β-NaGdF4:Yb3+, Er3+ was investigated in detail. The red, green and violet emission intensities were clearly enhanced and the maximum emission intensities were enhanced by about 9, 6, and 7 times, respectively, by tridoping with 13.5 mol% Mg2+ ions. The possible mechanism for enhancing upconversion emission was determined by the alteration of inter-ionic distance and the distortion of crystal structure based on the XRD data. The paramagnetic property can be modulated by the introduction of Mg2+ ions and the core–shell structure, and this can be ascribed to the change in the gadolinium molar percentage. Additionally, a synergistic effect on emission intensity enhancement was observed in a Mg2+-doped core–shell structure. At last, an improved ligand exchange method has been designed to render oleic acid-stabilized 13.5 mol% Mg2+-doped UCNCs dispersible in water and their three day cytotoxicity was assayed using stem cells. It is expected that this material could be applied in biomedical nanoprobes, bioseparation, magnetic resonance imaging, and so on.

A new monomer (quaternized bipyridine, QBPD) was synthesized to modify the interfacially polymerized polyethyleneimine (PEI) membranes. The QBPD monomer, containing binary charge sites and amine groups (NH 2 ), was anchored to the pristine PEI membrane through the “amine ∼ acyl chloride” amidation reaction. Pure water flux of the QBPD membrane is ∼ 96.6 L m −2 h −1 while the MgCl 2 rejection is maintained at 92%±3. Noteworthy, the flux is ∼ 2.8 times as high as that of the pristine PEI membrane (∼34.0 L m −2 h −1 at 0.6 MPa). Meanwhile, separation performance of the QBPD membrane remains stable in 162 h operation time at 0.6 MPa. When filtrating 50:1 Mg 2+ /Li + mixture, the flux of the QBPD membrane is 81.6 L m −2 h −1 , and the Mg/Li ratio in the permeate was reduced to 8.5:1. Collectively, the QBPD membrane shows good performance compared with recent nanofiltration membranes for Mg 2+ /Li + separation, exhibiting considerable potential for lithium extraction from salt lakes with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio.

Scale not only affects the taste and color of water, but also increases the risks of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases associated with drinking it. As a popular beverage, tea is rich many substances that have considerable potential for scale inhibition, including protein, tea polyphenols and organic acids. In this study, the effect of tea brewing on scale formation was explored. It was found that the proteins, catechins and organic acids in tea leaves could be released when the green tea was brewed in water with sufficient hardness and alkalinity. The tea-released protein was able to provide carboxyl groups to chelate with calcium ions (Ca 2+ ), preventing the Ca 2+ from reacting with the carbonate ions (CO 3 2− ). The B rings of catechins were another important structure in the complexation of Ca 2+ and magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ). The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the organic acids was able to form five-membered chelating rings with Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , resulting in a significant decrease in Ca 2+ from 100.0 to 60.0 mg/L. Additionally, the hydrogen ions (H + ) provided by the organic acids consumed and decreased the alkalinity of the water from 250.0 to 131.4 mg/L, leading to a remarkable reduction in pH from 8.93 to 7.73. It further prevented the bicarbonate (HCO 3 − ) from producing CO 3 2− when the water was heated. The reaction of the tea constituents with the hardness and alkalinity inhibited the formation of scale, leading to a significant decrease in turbidity from 10.6 to 1.4 NTU. Overall, this study provides information to help build towards an understanding of the scale inhibition properties of tea and the prospects of tea for anti-scaling in industrial applications.

Rechargeable magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) with intercalation materials as the cathode are found to offer better performance in Li + based electrolytes. Herein, we compare the electrochemical performance of MIBs using all-phenyl complex (APC) electrolytes before and after adding Li + additives with layered MoS 2 cathodes. We coincidentally describe the lithiation mechanism that leads to a phase transition whereby Li + additives accelerate a MoS 2 structural transformation from 2H to 1T which accounts for the superior battery performance (150 mAh/g, around two times the capacity of that without Li + additives). In this process, MoS 2 is partly exfoliated into single-layer nanosheets during cycle as evidenced by operando electrochemical synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Accordingly, electrochemical cells with pre-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets (liquid phase exfoliation) require fewer activation cycles (50 cycles, a quart of the cycles that using pristine MoS 2 ) in APC electrolyte and better rate performance. Our work thus provides new insight in designing high-performance rechargeable MIBs by optimizing the intercalation cathodes using Li + additives.

Extraction of lithium from salt lakes is an important route for lithium sources. Due to the unique structure and separation mechanism, i.e., size exclusion and Donnan effect, nanofiltration (NF) is considered as a promising way to separate magnesium (Mg 2+ ) and lithium (Li + ) ions. However, the Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor of NF membrane fabricated by traditional interfacial polymerization (IP) is usually dissatisfactory. Here, a swelling-embedding-shrinking strategy was proposed to modify polyethyleneimine (PEI)/trimesoyl chloride (TMC) NF membranes using diethylenetriamine (DETA) to improve the performance in Mg 2+ /Li + separation. The pristine PEI/TMC NF membrane was swollen with methanol to increase the polyamide chain spacing followed by embedding electropositive DETA as a modifier. The charge properties and pore structure of the active layer could be regulated by optimizing the modification conditions. Within comparison to the pristine membrane (TFC-0), the pure water flux of modified NF membrane (TFC-3) increased by 63.6% because of the rougher surface and the larger pore size. Meanwhile, the embedding of electropositive DETA reduced the electronegative property of membrane surface. In consequence, TFC-3 membrane exhibited higher rejection of MgCl 2 (93.9% against 88.4%) and lower rejection of LiCl (31.0% against 32.1%), thus showing a twofold improvement in Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor ( S Li, Mg = 11.38 against 5.87). The swelling-embedding-shrinking strategy in this article provided a good reference for the modification of NF membranes in the separation of multivalent and monovalent ions.

With the increase in population aging, the tendency of osteochondral injury will be accelerated, and repairing materials are increasingly needed for the optimization of the regenerative processes in bone and cartilage recovery. The local environment of the injury sites and the deficiency of Mg2+retards the repairing period via inhibiting the progenitor osteogenesis and chondrogenesis cells’ recruitment, proliferation, and differentiation, which results in the sluggish progress in the osteochondral repairing materials design. In this article, we elucidate the Mg2+-concentration specified effect on the cell proliferation, osteochondral gene expression, and differentiation of modeling chondrocytes (extracted from New Zealand white rabbit) and osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1). The concentration of Mg2+in the culture medium affects the proliferation, chondrogenesis, and osteogenesis: (i) Appropriate concentrations of Mg2+promote the proliferation of chondrocytes (1.25–10.0 mM) and MC3T3-E1 cells (2.5–30.0 mM); (ii) the optimal concentration of Mg2+that promotes the gene expression of noncalcified cartilage is 15 mM, calcified cartilage 10 mM, and subchondral bone 5 mM, respectively; (iii) overdosed Mg2+leads to the inhibition of cell activity for either chondrocytes (>20 mM) or osteoblasts (>30 mM). The biomimetic elucidation for orchestrating the allocation of gradient concentration of Mg2+in accordance of the physiological condition is crucial for designing the accurate microenvironment in osteochondral injury defects for optimization of bone and cartilage repairing materials in the future. Keywords:magnesium;chondrogenesis;osteogenesis;osteochondral defect;osteochondral unit

Advanced monovalent cation exchange membranes (MCEMs) have been applied to extract key monovalent cations (Li + or Na + ) from nature, but it is challenging to design high-performance MCEMs with low membrane area resistance and specific charge properties. Herein, a positively-charged Fe 3+ -bridged pyrogallic/polyethyleneimine membrane (Fe 3+ -bridged PY/PEIM) for efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation is fabricated through a covalent bond and coordination bond (CB/COB) competitive reaction. Various physicochemical characterizations elucidate that the formation of COBs reduces the reaction sites of PY and PEI molecules for Michael-addition and Schiff-base reactions, which reduces the thickness of the selective layers to reduce the membrane area resistance from 6.58 to 4.83 Ω·cm 2 . A highly positively-charged selective layer caused by unreacted NH 2 groups and Fe 3+ makes the optimal Fe 3+ -bridged PY/PEIM exhibit a superior separation performance (perm-selectivity (Li + /Mg 2+ ) of 45.57 with a Li + flux of 4.61 × 10 −8 mol·cm −2 ·s −1 ). Moreover, the optimal Fe 3+ -bridged PY/PEIM also has excellent separation performance (high Li + flux and perm-selectivity) and operational stability when treating three simulated solutions with different Mg/Li mass ratios and salinities. The new strategy for constructing a thin, defect-free and positively-charged selective layer through a CB/COB competitive reaction can provide new insights for designing high-performance MCEMs towards environmental remediation and energy harvesting.

The development of cation exchange membranes (CEMs) with high monovalent/divalent cation selectivity has great potential for enhanced salt separation for wastewater reclamation, and layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of polyelectrolyte films with high monovalent selectivities among cations has expanded the applications of such membranes. However, the structure–property relationship for constructing multilayered polyelectrolyte films with enhanced separation performance remains poorly understood. This study reports a novel CEM engineered by coating a [polyethyleneimine/polystyrene sulfonate (PEI/PSS)] n alternate electro-deposition multilayer on a polyacrylate substrate membrane. The newly developed CEM exhibited a monovalent selectivity of 4.59 for Li + /Mg 2+ with an optimal permeation of 0.16 mmol·cm −2 ·h −1 for Li + , demonstrating a competitive separation property compared to state-of-the-art permselective membranes. A detailed quantitative investigation provides the underlying insights into the monovalent selectivity for each polyelectrolyte layer. The results indicate negligible interface impedance toward monovalent cations but strengthened repulsion against divalent cations, thereby promoting a quick passage for monovalent cations while imposing temporal retardation on divalent cations during the electrodialysis (ED) process. Therefore, this study elucidates the characteristic reason for the enhanced monovalent ion permselectivity of LbL polyelectrolyte membranes in electro-driven separation processes.

To address the membrane challenges such as the trade-off effect between water permeance and separation selectivity, development of a desirable nanofiltration membrane structure is crucial. And, it is important to design a positively charged surface to enhance charge repulsion force between membrane surface and ions due to lithium (Li) extraction problem as the close hydration diameter of magnesium (Mg) and lithium ions. Herein, a strategy that involves regulating membrane structure to create a loose and dense double-layer structure via bi-directional interfacial polymerization has been proposed to form selectivity-enhanced nanofiltration membranes for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The incorporation of dopamine (DA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) in first loose layer could improve the membrane stability, while the amine groups from polyethyleneimine (PEI) or polyvinylamine (PVAm) in the second dense layer surface, provided by rich amine polymers, could improve the rejection of divalent magnesium ion. The as-fabricated membrane DA-TMC-PEI shows enhanced permeance (around 15.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and the membrane DA-TMC-PVAm demonstrates outstanding ion selectivity with Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 30. Moreover, the DA-TMC-PEI and DA-TMC-PVAm membranes could efficiently purify the ratio of Mg 2+ /Li + solution from 50 to 0.43. We believe the strategy could provide a promising potential in lithium extraction.

Lithium, a highly sought-after element for various industries, is primarily sourced from salt-lake brines, where its extraction faces the critical challenge of separating Li + from high concentrations of Mg 2+ . In this work, we present a crown ether functionalized polymer membrane with a hierarchical pore structure, designed for highly selective Li + /Mg 2+ separation. By grafting 12-crown-4-ether onto a microporous polyimide, ether rings matching the size of Li + are incorporated within the interconnected intrinsic micropores, facilitating Li + permeation while restricting Mg 2+ transport. The addition of PEG4000 during membrane formation creates unconnected macropores, reducing effective membrane thickness while preventing pore linkages that could lead to Mg 2+ leakage. Consequently, the Li + permeation rate significantly increases from 0.0095nmol cm −1 s −1 to 0.257 nmol cm −1 s −1 , while Mg 2+ permeation remains low at 0.0014 nmol cm −1 s −1 , achieving a remarkable Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of up to 184. This study offers a straightforward and efficient approach for developing Li + selective membranes for efficient lithium extraction.

Owning to seriously impaired capacity of bone regeneration, the repair of osteoporotic bone defect remains a major clinical challenge in orthopedics. For titanium mesh scaffolds of skull repair, to construct bio-coatings targeting the pathological environment of osteoporosis is significant. Here, tannic acid (TA)/casein phosphopeptide (CPP) based layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled coating that loaded with anti-osteoporotic alendronate sodium (AS) and bioactive Mg 2+ were prepared. The TA/CPP based LBL coatings showed good antioxidative function to effectively clear ABTS +• free radicals (scavenging rate of 64.29 ± 20.21 %) and inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) under oxidative stress conditions. All the LBL coatings exhibited good blood compatibility, and promoted early adhesion of BMSCs without affecting cell proliferation. In particular, the (TA/CPP-AS NPs) 4 + Mg 2+ coatings had both good alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and in vitro osteogenic mineralization, and could effectively promote the migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). In 8-weeks in vivo implantation experiments of osteoporotic skull defects, AS and Mg 2+ loaded LBL coating showed significant formation of new bone tissue. The study on the integrated system of antioxidative coating with bisphosphonates and active metal ions will serve as a promising strategy for osteoporotic bone defect repair.

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) nanofiltration (NF) membranes demonstrate remarkable effectiveness in separating lithium and magnesium from salt lakes, attributed to their positively charged surface. However, undesired permeability resulting from densely cross-linked structures limits the further industrial applications and development of PEI NF membranes. Herein, a high permeable Mg 2+ /Li + separation NF membrane with stronger internal and surface positive charge was fabricated using 1-Aminopyridinium iodide (1-AI) for the first time through a capping-grafting synergistic strategy. On the one hand, the monoamine character of 1-AI can realize the end-capping (EC) effect on the acyl chloride monomers in the interfacial polymerization process, which can contribute to a reduction in the cross-linking degree of the membrane. On the other hand, 1-AI with a quaternary ammonium group as the surface grafting (SG) agent can significantly improve the surface positive charge property of the membrane. The synergistic effect of capping-grafting not only rendered the membrane looser and effectively enhanced the surface positive charge of the membrane, but also increased the depth of grafting modification, leading to a notable rise in the internal positive charge of the membrane. After the capping-grafting treatment, the water permeance of the PEI-EC/SG membrane reached 19.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , approximately 4.5 times that of the original PEI membrane, while keeping an ideal MgCl 2 rejection rate (97.1%) and exhibiting good Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity (27.7). This work demonstrates the advantages of the capping-grafting synergistic method in regulating membrane structure for improving permeability as well as the surface and internal charge properties of the membrane for enhancing ion selectivity.
