Redox-Active MnOx-Biochar synthesis for bisphenol a removal with simultaneous CO-Rich syngas generation via Mn-Catalyzed CO2-mediated biomass thermochemical treatment

Youn-Jun Lee,Chohee Yang,Deok Hyun Moon,Eilhann E. Kwon

CO 2 thermochemical treatment yielded MnO x -biochar and CO-rich syngas. • Micro- and mesopore development enhanced BPA adsorption by MnCCB (CO 2 ). • MnO x rich in Mn(IV) and Mn(III) promoted catalytic BPA oxidation. • Char gasification and oxygenate conversion increased yields of CO and H 2 . Adsorptive removal of aqueous organic pollutants is often limited by mass-transfer kinetics to the adsorbent surface. To address this constraint, integrated adsorption-oxidation processes have been widely explored as a strategic measure because they enable in situ degradation of adsorbent-bound organic pollutants, thereby regenerating active sites and prolonging removal performance. However, many such systems require energy inputs and chemical oxidants, which hinder practical implementation. Here, we evaluate MnO x -loaded corncob (CC) biochar produced under a CO 2 atmosphere (MnCCB (CO 2 )) as a bifunctional adsorption-oxidation material for bisphenol A (BPA) removal. Physicochemical characterization showed that CO 2 -assisted fabrication yielded MnO x with a higher oxidation state in MnCCB (CO 2 ) than that in the N 2 -derived analogue (MnCCB (N 2 )). MnCCB (CO 2 ) exhibited increased micro-/mesopore volume and a higher specific surface area. Consistent with these structural advantages, MnCCB (CO 2 ) achieved a BPA removal rate constant of 8.48 × 10 -2 min −1 , outperforming MnCCB (N 2 ) and pristine CC biochars produced under either N 2 or CO 2 . Beyond pollutant removal, Mn-catalyzed CO 2 mediated thermochemical treatment also enhanced syngas formation during MnCCB (CO 2 ) production. This improvement is attributed to selective catalytic reactions between bio-oil and CO 2 , during which CO 2 is converted to CO in the presence of MnO x . Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of CO 2 -assisted thermochemical treatment for the simultaneous production of functional biochar and syngas. Solvent-induced fabrication of Cu/MnOx nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies for efficient and long-lasting photothermal catalytic degradation of humid toluene vapor

Shanliang Jiang,Changhao Li,Yaseen Muhammad,Ying Tang,Ruimeng Wang,Junjie Li,Jing Li,Zhongxing Zhao,Zhenxia Zhao

Construction of highly-active photothermal catalysts featuring merits of high quantum efficiency and superior heat resistance is a great challenge during volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation under high humidity. Herein, a facile solvent-induced dimensionality reduction strategy was proposed to engineer a nanosheeted and polycrystalline Cu/Mn-based catalyst (M-Cu/MnO x ) having interfacial oxygen vacancies for enhanced photo-thermal catalytic degradation of toluene under highly humid conditions. Unique Cu-mediated δ-MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 nanosheets with high surface area exhibited excellent light absorptivity and photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, as well as superior light-driven thermogenesis. It realized ultra-high (92.8%) toluene conversion and deep mineralization (84.4%) under RH = 80% and continuous catalytic reaction (200 h). Its toluene degradation rate exhibited 3.5–71.9 times higher than reported state-of-the-art photothermal catalysts. The newly designed M-Cu/MnO x catalyst provides a promising, low-cost and alternative for the efficient degradation of toluene and other similar VOCs under humid conditions on large-scale operations.

Breaking the Kinetic Limitation of Acidic 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Electrooxidation to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid via Shared Oxygen Intermediates with Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Ir-MnOx

Peiyun Zhou,Shihao Feng,Xi Wang,Xiang Liu,Xingjian Xu,Xiubing Huang,Haohong Duan

Despite the practical advantages of conducting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in acidic media, such as facilitated product separation and improved reactant stability over alkaline environments, the lack of efficient electrocatalysts has hindered the development of efficient acidic processes. Herein, we reveal that HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) shares key oxygen-containing intermediates ([O], e.g., *OH and *OOH) with oxygen evolution reaction. By incorporating Ir into manganese oxide (MnOx), the kinetic constraints of acidic HMFOR were successfully broken. Specifically, in the designed Ir-MnOx, the presence of Ir sites not only accelerates the generation of [O] species to provide abundant oxidative active species but also modulates the electronic structure of Mn sites to activate their reactivity and enhance HMF adsorption. Synergistic cooperation between Ir and Mn sites endows Ir-MnOx with a record-high HMFOR current density (56.2 mA cm−2@1.40 VRHE), along with high FDCA selectivity (94%) and yield (92%) in an acidic electrolyte (pH 1.89). This work provides mechanistic insights and a design strategy for efficient HMFOR electrocatalysts in acidic environments.

Relay activation H2 over Pd/MnOx-VC for efficient aqueous-phase hydrogenation of concentrated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran under low temperatures

Weizhen Xie,Chenting Yang,Quanwei Deng,Shigang Su,Lu Lin,Xing Tang

The selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) under mild conditions holds great significance for sustainable chemical production. However, this process remains hindered by challenges such as the instability of HMF in aqueous media and the insufficient efficiency of H 2 activation. Herein, a Pd catalyst supported on oxygen-vacancy–enriched MnO x -VC (Pd/MnO x -VC) is developed, featuring highly dispersed Pd/PdO heterostructures with abundant Pd–O–Mn interfacial active sites. Notably, Pd/MnO x -VC offered a high BHMTHF formation rates of 366.5 mol BHMTHF ·mol Pd −1 ·h −1 in water under mild conditions. Moreover, the catalyst was able to efficiently convert both purified and crude HMF at high concentrations (≥ 10 wt%), achieving BHMTHF yields exceeding 90 % in either batch or continuous-flow reactor under low temperatures (30–60 °C), underscoring its potential for industrial application. Mechanistic studies revealed that the relay activation of H 2 over Pd nanoparticles and adjacent Pd–O–Mn sites generates polarized H δ⁺ –H δ⁻ pairs, which primarily contributed to the outstanding activity of Pd/MnO x -VC. This work highlights the importance of interfacial site engineering in designing high-performance catalysts for HMF hydrogenation.

MnOx anchored on N and O co-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulated with FeCo alloy as highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zinc–Air batteries

Shanhua Chen,Yanqing Huang,Ming Li,Panpan Sun,Xiaowei Lv,Bing Li,Liang Fang,Xiaohua Sun

Currently, development of OER/ORR bifunctional electric catalysts with low cost, high catalytic activity and stability is the key step to promote the practical application of zinc-air batteries. Herein, composite catalyst with manganese oxide on N and O co-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulated with FeCo alloy (CoFe@CNT/MnO) was prepared in situ on CFP by hydrothermal and CVD pyrolysis methods. Owing to rich C O functional group on in situ growing carbon nanotubes with 3D open structure, alloying effect of CoFe core metal embedded in carbon nanotube and the contribution of MnO supported on carbon nanotubes to ORR performance and stability, the CoFe@CNT/MnO catalyst exhibits low overpotential of 193 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 for OER, larger diffusion-limited current density of 5.75 mA/cm 2 and half-wave potential (E 1/2  = 0.85 V) for ORR, high specific capacity (810 mAh/g Zn ) and peak power density (164 mW/cm 2 ) with the Zn-air battery and superior stability. Moreover, the peak power density of the single CoFe@CNT/MnO-based quasi-solid state ZAB could reach 142 mW/cm 2 , and two quasi-solid state ZABs connected in series can power a mini fan.

Self-optimized Ni-MnOx interactions tailor H recombination activity for enhanced integrated CO2 capture and super dry reforming of methane with H2-free CO production

Shuzhuang Sun,Bocheng Yu,Yu Liu,Bin Lu,Yanmei Shen,Yanmin Zhang,Hongman Sun,Hui Zhou,Hengshan Qiu

Integrated carbon capture and utilization via dry reforming of methane (ICCU-DRM) paves a sustainable way for directly converting CO 2 from flue gas into CO. However, the process suffers from severe carbon depositions and low CH 4 utilization. Herein, we demonstrate that the NiMnxCa dual functional materials undergo a spontaneous structural self-optimization during cyclic ICCU-DRM process. The MnO x can segregate from (MnO) α (CaO) 1-α solid solution during CO 2 capture. Consequently, the Ni-MnO x interaction, with a MnO x -coated Ni surface, can be intensified with the material reconstruction, which effectively suppresses the hydrogen recombination probability and prevent carbon deposition. Moreover, the *H from CH 4 activation can react with MnO, enabling highly efficient conversion of CO 2 via in situ chemical looping pathway. As an example, the NiMn5Ca achieved a ~ 100 % H utilization (~ 0 H 2 production), 95 % CO 2 conversion and < 1 carbon deposition/per mol of converted CO 2 at 675 °C in 25 cycles. The work illustrates a typical scenario of an intelligent structure optimization under reaction environment and proposes a strategy to enhance CH 4 utilization efficiency by directing *H to a fast surface reaction rather than desorbing as H 2 .

Electrochemical construction of S-doped MnOx/Mn integrated film on carbon paper in a choline chloride based deep eutectic solvent for enhanced electrochemical water oxidation

Mengwei Guo,Zhuoming Wei,Qibo Zhang

The rational design and synthesis of highly efficient, precious metal-free electrocatalysts in the promotion of electrochemical water oxidation is essential for the sustainable use of renewable energy. Herein, an integrated, S-doped MnO x /Mn film developed on carbon paper (CP) formed by a two-step transformation approach that includes template-free electrodeposition and in-situ electrochemical oxidation is employed as an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The doping of S and in-situ electro-oxidation lead to a tailored electronic structure and phase composition , which endow the composite electrode with a significantly enhanced OER catalytic performance. This S-doped integrated electrode perfectly combines highly active MnO x outer layers with conductive metallic Mn inner layers to offer abundant catalytic interfaces and electronic paths, leading to favorable reaction kinetics. As a result, the optimal S-doped MnO x /Mn/CP offers a low overpotential of 435 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with a Tafel slope of 89.97 mV dec −1 as well as improved stability. Impressively, a highly intrinsic catalytic activity with a turnover frequency of 0.0112 s −1 is obtained for S-doped MnO x /Mn/CP, which is 4.2-fold higher than that of MnO x /Mn/CP. S doping plays a critical role in stabilizing the Mn III O x active phase and is ultimately responsible for the enhanced catalytic performance. This work provides an integrated design concept and S doping approach suitable for boosting the OER catalytic performance of MnO x .

ATP-Exhausted Strategy Induced Anti-Tumor Low-Temperature Photothermal Therapy Based on Rare Earth Nanocrystals Modified Hollow Porous MnOx Nanozyme with TME-Activated NIR-II Imaging

Xiaozhao Wang,Jing Li,Zhengtao Luo,Zhimin Gao,Yongxin Huang,Jiamin Luo,Xinyi Wang,Yaru Zhang,Meiling Tan,Zhiyao Hou

Insufficient adenosine triphosphate (ATP) can reduce the synthesis of heat-stress-induced heat shock proteins (HSPs) to promote the efficiency of mild photothermal therapy (mPTT), thus the rational design of ATP-exhausted strategy based on nanotechnology is an effective approach to resuscitate mPTT. Herein, Nd 3+ doped nanocrystals (NaYF 4 :Nd@CaF 2 , Nd-NCs) modified hollow mesoporous manganese oxide (H-MnO x ) nanocomposite (H-MnO x @Nd-NCs, MN) is synthesized, and loaded with glucose transporters (GLUTs) inhibitor KL-11743, noted as MN-KL nanozyme. In tumor microenvironment (TME), MN-KL can react with overexpressed glutathione (GSH) to release KL-11743, which can suppress the synthesis of intracellular ATP at the source by blocking glucose uptake to inhibit HSPs expression, meanwhile, MN-KL catalyzes the production of ·O 2 − / 1 O 2 /·OH and lipid peroxidation (LPO) to cleave existing HSPs. Through a two-pronged strategy with ATP inhibition and oxide accumulation, reducing the level of HSPs can be guaranteed for achieving efficient mPTT in both subcutaneous and in situ tumor models in mice. During this process, Nd-NCs can absorb near-infrared light and convert it into heat, and the quenched fluorescence of Nd-NCs by H-MnO x can be recovered through GSH-triggered biodegradation in tumors, thus the modification of Nd-NCs not only provides photothermal effect but also enables MN to own TME-activated fluorescence imaging.

NADPH Oxidase-Like Nanozyme for High-Efficiency Tumor Therapy Through Increasing Glutathione Consumption and Blocking Glutathione Regeneration

Di Han,Binbin Ding,Pan Zheng,Meng Yuan,Yulong Bian,Hao Chen,Meifang Wang,Mengyu Chang,Abdulaziz A. Al Kheraif,Ping'an Ma,Jun Lin

To counteract the high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by rapid growth, tumor cells resist oxidative stress by accelerating the production and regeneration of intracellular glutathione (GSH). Numerous studies focus on the consumption of GSH, but the regeneration of GSH will enhance the reduction level of tumor cells to resist oxidative stress. Therefore, inhibiting the regeneration of GSH; while, consuming GSH is of great significance for breaking the redox balance of tumor cells. Herein, a simple termed MnO x -coated Au (AMO) nanoflower, as a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase (NOX) nanoenzyme, is reported for efficient tumor therapy. Au nanoparticles exhibit the capability to catalyze the oxidation of NADPH, hindering GSH regeneration; while, concurrently functioning as a photothermal agent. During the process of eliminating intracellular GSH, MnO x releases Mn 2+ that subsequently engages in Fenton-like reactions, ultimately facilitating the implementation of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Overall, this NOX enzyme-based nanoplatform enhances ROS generation and disrupts the state of reduction equilibrium, inducing apoptosis and ferroptosis by blocking GSH regeneration and increasing GSH consumption, thereby achieving collaborative treatments involving photothermal therapy (PTT), CDT, and catalytic therapy. This research contributes to NADPH and GSH targeted tumor therapy and showcases the potential of nanozymes.

Enhancing manganese removal through pre-deposition of powdered activated carbon-manganese oxide (PAC-MnOx) film on gravity-driven ceramic membrane: The impact of biofilm integrity and fluid dynamics

Qiao Wang,Mengyao Xiao,Ken Fang,Xing Du,Zhihong Wang,Xinglin Lu

Manganese is widely distributed in the natural environment, and its presence in drinking water poses a risk to human health. In this study, an integrated pre-deposited powdered activated carbon (PAC) and manganese oxide (MnO x ) bio-functional layer of inorganic origin was coupled with gravity-driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) reactor. The study aims to investigate the effects of the membrane pore size and functional layer integrity on the Mn 2+ removal and flux. The results reveal that the average Mn 2+ removal efficiency of the large pore size membranes (300 kDa and 0.45 μm) was lower (75 % – 78 %) compared to those with smaller pores (15 kDa and 50 kDa) (87 % – 88 %) during long-term operation. Such differences are attributed to a period of manganese leakage before the PAC-MnO x matured in large-pore membrane units and a longer residence time in small-pore membranes. The functional layer leaded to reversible fouling, which was more prominent in membranes with larger pores (contributing to 93 % of total resistance) than those with smaller ones (ranging from 51.7 % to 61.9 %). Although the damaged functional layer resulted in occasional high Mn 2+ concentrations in the effluent, it did not significantly impact long-term flux development. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), in conjunction with COMSOL analysis, non-destructively evaluate biofilm formation process and indicate a homogeneous flow field and mass transfer in the “dual layers” (active film layer and ceramic membrane layer) of the GDCM. The presence of manganese-oxidizing bacteria ( Hyphomicrobium, Reyranella, and Pseudomonas ) in the GDCM reactor was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and high-throughput sequencing. Additional material characterization revealed that a portion of the PAC-MnO x exhibited characteristics of birnessite, with autocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ , and that Mn (III) and Mn (IV) were the primary species in MnO x , which exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation and adsorption capabilities for Mn (II), respectively. Overall, the developed PAC-MnO x GDCM system shows great promise in efficiently removing manganese and producing water of desired quality, thereby holding potential in applications across several sectors of advanced water treatment processes.
