Effect of Mo doping on electrochemical Performance of Li(Ni 0.6 Mn 0.4 ) 1-x Mo x O 2 cathodes

Xingbo Qi,Lei Ni,Ziyan He,Xu Sun,Hejie Lu,Haiqiang Li,Ruixi Meng,Maosen Fu,Xiao Ma

Cobalt-free, nickel-rich layered oxide cathode material LiNixMn1-xO2 (NM) has attracted much attention due to its high specific capacity and low cost. However, cobalt-free cathode materials have more serious problems such as Li/Ni disorder and structural degradation compared to ternary LiNixCOyMn1-x-yO2 (x ≥0.5, NCM) cathodes. To address these challenges, LiNi0.6Mn0.4O2 (NM64) and a series of Mo-doped Li(Ni0.6Mn0.4)(1-x)MoxO2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) cathode materials were designed and prepared by high-temperature solid-phase method, and the effect of Mo doping on the structure and electrochemical performance of NM64 cathodes was systematically investigated. Mo doping not only suppresses Li/Ni mixing and enlarges interlayer spacing but also effectively inhibits primary particle overgrowth, resulting in refined particle morphology that enhances structural stability and Li+ transport kinetics. Consequently, the Mo-doped NMM cathodes exhibit more stable interface with significantly suppressed side reactions. Li(Ni0.6Mn0.4)0.98Mo0.02O2 cathode exhibited superior capacity retention of 86.83% after 100 cycles at 1.0 C (at 25℃ and 2.8-4.3 V), surpassing the NM matrix by 8.98% and demonstrating the remarkable cycling stability improvement. This work elucidates the structural and interfacial stabilization mechanisms induced by high-valent Mo doping, providing an effective approach to developing high-performance Co-free layered oxide cathodes.

A comparative structural and combustion study of Al-MO/PVDF (MO=ZnO & ZnFe2O4) thermites synthesised by electrospraying and mechanical mixing

Zhong-xuan Han,Hao Liu,Zhan-jun Yang,Yi-fan Guo,Shu-na Zhao,Mi Li,Lin Jiang,Andrei Rotaru

Aluminised thermites show strong potential for energy-intensive applications, but ensuring stable nanoscale dispersion and optimising combustion performance is challenging. This study prepared Al–MO/PVDF thermites (MO = ZnO, ZnFe₂O₄) by electrospraying and mechanical mixing to compare how particle morphology and compositional uniformity affect reactivity. Electrosprayed samples formed near-spherical, submicron particles with homogeneous distributions of reactants, whereas mechanically mixed samples aggregated into larger, irregular clusters. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed sharper, staged exothermic peaks in the electrosprayed thermites, indicating enhanced reactant contact, while the mechanically mixed thermites produced broad, overlapping exotherms. X-ray diffraction showed partial amorphisation and core-shell formation under rapid solvent evaporation. Laser ignition tests demonstrated faster ignition, higher flame temperatures, and more intense combustion in electrosprayed formulations, particularly Al–ZnFe₂O₄/PVDF, which exhibited a secondary heat release (micro-explosion). Electrospray-assisted fabrication improved homogeneity and promoted rapid, high-temperature reactions for enhanced combustion performance.

Selective hydrodeoxygenation of fatty acid esters on PdZn/Mo-Al2O3: The influences of Mo and Zn on adsorption and selectivity

Zuhang Jin,Yiwei Zhao,Cheng Tao,Rui Du,Yongzheng Shi,Chao Zhang

PdZn/Mo-Al 2 O 3 -C effectively catalyzed hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acid esters to alkanes. • Coexistence of Pd and Zn enhanced the dispersion of active sites and regulates the distribution of acid sites. • ZnO x and MoO x species adjacent to Pd suppressed the decarboxylation side reaction. • 92% octadecane selectivity was achieved in methyl stearate HDO. The conversion of fatty acid esters to alkanes with high carbon chain number by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is of great significance in biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals. A PdZn/Mo-Al 2 O 3 -C catalyst was prepared for the preparation of octadecane from methyl stearate HDO. The coexistence of Pd and Zn on Mo-based catalysts greatly promoted the dispersion of active sites on the catalyst surface, which also effectively regulated the distribution of acid sites on the catalyst surface. The Zn modified Pd catalyst also effectively adsorbed the C O/C–O bond of the substrate to facilitate the cleavage of C–O bonds, as well as suppressing the decarboxylation side reaction, and achieving octadecane selectivity of 92%. The optimized catalyst also displayed high HDO selectivity for converting the fatty acid esters (C 8  ∼ C 18 ) to alkanes. Sulfated TiO2 supported molybdenum-based catalysts for transesterification of Jatropha seed oil: Effect of molybdenum species and acidity properties

Xiu Gao,Chao Chen,Wenlu Zhang,Yanping Hong,Chunrong Wang,Guoqiang Wu

A series of sulfated TiO 2 supported Mo ( x Mo/1.5ST) catalysts were synthesized successfully and evaluated for the transesterification of Jatropha seed oil (JO) to biodiesel. Extensive characterization exhibits that the well dispersed Mo oxide species, with Mo 6+ and Mo 5+ oxidation states, were formed on the surface of the sulfated TiO 2 . The results indicate the presence of many sulfates species leads to the reduction of Mo 6+ species to Mo 5+ species. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of the x Mo/1.5ST catalysts gradually increases with the increase of Mo-loading, although the sulfates content and the total acid intensity decrease. The transesterification process was fully investigated, and the 10Mo/1.5ST shows the highest yield of biodiesel of up to 97.42%. Additionally, the possible mechanism for the JO transesterification over Mo/1.5ST was described, and the fuel properties of the as-synthesized biodiesel conformed to the current international standards.

One-pot synthesis of 1,4-butanediol via the deep hydrogenation of maleic anhydride over Cu–xMo/SiO2 catalysts

Kai Cui,Jiaming Yang,Yuli Jing,Junwen Chen,Chen Zhao,Peng Wu,Xiaohong Li

Sustainability issues have led to a gradual market expansion for the 1,4-butanediol (BDO) monomer of the biodegradable plastics to replace conventional plastics. Maleic anhydride (MA) can be derived from the oxidation of bio-based furfural or fructose. Although the hydrogenation of MA can produce a series of products, including succinic anhydride (SA), γ-butyrolactone (GBL), BDO and tetrahydrofuran (THF), the one-pot deep hydrogenation of MA to BDO or THF under mild conditions has been rarely reported in the literature until now. Herein, we report the production of BDO from the one-pot deep hydrogenation of MA over a Cu–0.03Mo/SiO2 catalyst, achieving 100% MA conversion and 88.3% BDO yield. The Cu–0.03Mo/SiO2 catalyst also showed good long-term stability without obvious loss in activity or BDO selectivity during a 160 h time-on-stream test. Doping Mo to Cu/SiO2 catalysts in an optimal amount adjusted the distribution of Cu0/Cu+ species and modulated the interaction of Cu–SiO2 and surface acidity, so that the activation of hydrogen, MA and relevant intermediates can become balanced, in addition to the restriction of side-reactions. This study provides potential for the green synthesis of BDO with non-precious Cu-based catalysts.

A novel class of ATF fuels with large grain size, enhanced thermophysical properties and oxidation resistance

Zhenliang Yang,Bingqing Li,Jingkun Xu,Yi Zhong,Liang Xie,Mingfu Chu,Yun Wang,Rui Gao,Libing Yu,Mingshan Wang,Guoliang Zhao,Pengcheng Zhang,Bin Bai,Chen Xu

Two strategies have been extensively employed to develop advanced accident tolerant fuels (ATF): improving thermal conductivity and producing large grain sized pellets. However, there are few reports on the simultaneous utilization of both strategies. In this work, we fabricated Mo–Cr alloy reinforced UO 2 (UMC) composite pellet with both high thermal conductivity and large grain size by a simple in-situ alloying method for the first time. The average grain size of UO 2 increased from 6 μm to 113 μm. Thermal conductivity of the UMC pellet (with 2 vol% Mo) at 1200 °C increased by 36.46% compared with pure UO 2 . The increase rate of thermal conductivity per 1 vol% dopant reached about 18%. The Mo–Cr alloy formed continuous micro-cell layer around UO 2 particles. Such continuous micro-cell Mo–Cr alloy layer and increase of UO 2 grain size both helped improve the thermal conductivity of UMC composite pellets. Thermal expansion coefficient of the UMC under the operating temperature decreased by 11.90% compared with pure UO 2 . The oxidation resistance of the UMC pellet under high temperature steam was also improved. This work provides a new strategy towards fabricating ATF with both high thermal conductivity and large grain size.

Influence of the crystalline structure of Co-Mo precursors on the hydrodesulfurization performance of unsupported tube-like Co-Mo sulfide catalysts

Xiao Zhengting,Li Qingyang,Li Guangci,Wang Wentai,Li Xuebing,Chen Song,Li Chunhu

A series of Co-Mo sulfide catalysts with tube-like hollow structure were prepared by a low temperature pre-sulfurization method using various CoMoO 4 as precursors synthesized by coprecipitation process at different temperature. The crystallite structure of CoMoO 4 precursors determined the properties of Co-Mo sulfide catalysts, including pore structure, concentration of CoMoS active phase, microstructure of MoS 2 slabs, and desulfurization activity. The higher temperature led to better crystallinity of CoMoO 4 precursor, resulting in less CoMoS active phase and fewer Mo atoms at the corner sites of the pre-sulfurized catalyst. In addition, the MoS 2 slabs with shorter length and more stacking layers (especially Co-promoted MoS 2 slabs) in the catalysts are also formed at appropriate precursor preparation temperature, which are favorable for forming more unsaturated coordination sites (especially corner sites). According to the results of hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene on the Co-Mo sulfide catalysts, the reaction rate and the production yield are highly dependent on the number of surface-active centers, while the activity is mainly attributed to the Type II CoMoS species.

Dry reforming of methane on MgO–Al2O3 supported Ni–Mo alloy catalysts: insight into the role of Mo and reforming mechanism

Hailong Fang,Shangzhen Feng,Jie Yang,Huanjin Jiang,Wenhao Wang,Rijie Wang,Jixiang Chen

MgO–Al 2 O 3 supported Ni and Ni–Mo bimetallic catalysts (referred as Ni/MgAl and Ni x Mo/MgAl with the Ni/Mo atomic ratio of x, respectively) were prepared by the co-precipitation method and tested for the dry reforming of methane (DRM) on an atmospheric quartz fixed-bed. The XRD, XPS, XAFS and magnetic measurement results demonstrate that the Ni–Mo alloy forms in Ni x Mo/MgAl, which inhibits the sintering of metal particles and enhances the degree of coordination unsaturation of metal sites, and subsequently Ni x Mo/MgAl expose more metal sites than Ni/MgAl. The CO 2 -TPD and TPSR reveals than the presence of Mo promotes the adsorption and dissociation of CO 2 , beneficial to DRM and suppressing carbon deposition. Particularly, compared to that on metallic Ni, the graphitic carbon is remarkably suppressed on Ni–Mo alloy own to the charge transfer from Ni to Mo and the isolated Ni ones by the Mo ones. During DRM, Ni x Mo/MgAl are more active than Ni/MgAl, especially Ni 5 Mo/MgAl, which gives the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 82.3% and 87.4% at 800 °C, respectively. Also, Ni 5 Mo/MgAl is more stable than Ni/MgAl, and Ni–Mo alloy structure maintains during the reaction and after the regeneration. In addition, the DRM mechanism dominatingly via the HCOO∗ intermediate species is proposed based on in situ DRIFTS and TPSR.

Modulating the Acidic Properties of Mesoporous Mox–Ni0.8Cu0.2O Nanowires for Enhanced Catalytic Performance toward the Methanolysis of Ammonia Borane for Hydrogen Production

Yufa Feng,Xuefeng Zhang,Youxiang Shao,Xiaodong Chen,Huize Wang,Junhao Li,Ming Wu,Huafeng Dong,Quanbing Liu,Hao Li

Rational construction of inexpensive, highly efficient, and stable catalysts for ammonia borane (AB) methanolysis is in high demand but still remains a great challenge. In this work, we have successfully fabricated uniform Mox–Ni0.8Cu0.2O nanowires using a simple hydrothermal method followed by a post-calcination treatment and flexibly modulated the acidity of their surface by changing the amount of Mo introduced into Ni0.8Cu0.2O. The Mo0.1–Ni0.8Cu0.2O catalyst displayed strong catalytic activity toward AB methanolysis with an ultrahigh turnover frequency of 46.9 molH2 molcat.–1 min–1, which is even higher than some noble metal catalysts. In this work, an equation regarding the relationship between the quantity of moderated acid sites of catalysts and its corresponding activity toward AB methanolysis was first determined. A plausible mechanism for AB methanolysis catalyzed by Mox–Ni0.8Cu0.2O was proposed, and the benefits of the introduction of MoO3 to Ni0.8Cu0.2O for enhancing the catalytic performance were also discussed. These findings can form a basis for the rational construction of inexpensive catalysts with robust performance toward AB methanolysis for hydrogen production.

Engineering Pt–S–Mo and Pd–S–Mo sites in hierarchical porous MoS2 for boosted oxygen reduction activity in microbial fuel cell

Wenyi Wang,Long Tang,Cheng Chen,Xueqin Wang,Yuanyuan Wang,Wencong Sun

Efficient and stable electrocatalysts with low platinum content are crucial for the practical application of fuel cells. The development of Pt-based single atom catalysts (SACs) has emerged as a promising research direction. In this study, we design and prepare a SACs based on MoS 2 with Pt–S–Mo and Pd–S–Mo active sites (Pd, Pt–MoS 2 ) by successively occupying vacancies, while maintaining the individual characteristics of the active sites. The resulting Pd, Pt–MoS 2 catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), long-term stability, and resistance to common poisons (SCN − , S 2− , and methanol) under neutral conditions. Meanwhile, the microbial fuel cell (MFC) equipped with Pd, Pt–MoS 2 exhibits excellent performance in terms of actual electricity generation performance and sewage purification capacity with an ultrahigh power density, average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate, and coulombic efficiency (CE) of 1398.6 ± 43.5 mW m −2 , 96.2 ± 2.2 %, and 22.5 ± 0.5 %, respectively. This strategy will provide new insights into the development of advanced bimetallic as well as polymetallic doped vacancies of MoS 2 SACs.

Effect of Heat Treatment under Different Atmospheres on the Bonding Properties and Mechanism of Ceramiziable Heat-Resistant Adhesive

Qingke Wang,Jiadong Tao,Huawei Shan,Tangyin Cui,Jie Ding,Jianghang Wang

In this study, a heat-resistant adhesive was prepared using molybdenum-phenolic (Mo-PF) resin as the matrix and TiB2particle as the ceramizable filler for bonding Al2O3ceramic substrates. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to characterize the chemical structure of the Mo-PF. Subsequently, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and shear strength testing were employed to investigate the effects of heat treatment in different atmospheres on the thermal stability and residual bonding properties of the adhesive. To further explore the bonding mechanism of the adhesive after heat treatment in different atmospheres, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength testing, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to analyze the microstructure, mechanical strength, and composition evolution of the adhesive at different temperatures. The bonding strength of Al2O3joints showed a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing after different temperature heat treatment in air, with the shear strength reaching a maximum value of 25.68 MPa after treatment at 1200 °C. And the bonding strength of Al2O3joints decreased slowly with the increase of temperature in nitrogen. In air, the ceramicization reaction at a high temperature enabled the mechanical strength of the adhesive to rise despite the continuous pyrolysis of the resin. However, the TiB2filler in nitrogen did not react, and the properties of the adhesive showed a decreasing tendency with the pyrolysis of the resin.

Enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity via multi-channel charge transfer in nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated FeNi/Mo2C heterointerfaces with engineered built-in electric fields

Qinghua Sun,Wenju Xie,Bai Zheng,Yikai Xu,Fulin Xie,Tingfang Tian,Jie Zhao,Yanhe Xiao,Shuijin Lei,Baochang Cheng

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal half-reaction in electrocatalytic water splitting and metal-air batteries. Non-precious metal heterointerface materials provide significant advantages in enhancing OER activity while reducing costs; however, effective engineering of built-in electric fields (BIEFs) at multi-phase heterointerfaces remains a major challenge. Herein, we report a novel FeNi/Mo₂C@NC multi-phase heterointerface catalyst synthesized via a low-temperature solution combustion method followed by high-temperature annealing. The catalyst exhibits a heterointerface between FeNi and Mo 2 C, while nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) coating interacts further with FeNi and Mo 2 C to form Mott-Schottky heterointerfaces and generate multiple BIEFs that promote charge separation, optimize Fermi levels and fine-tune d-band centers, thereby modifying the adsorption behavior of oxygen-containing intermediates during the OER process. This strategy drives the directional migration of charge carriers along multiple pathways, resulting in rapid charge transfer, enhanced conductivity, and a synergistic improvement in OER performance. The FeNi/Mo 2 C@NC catalyst shows exceptional OER activity, with a low overpotential of 242 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 68 mV dec −1 derived from steady-state chronoamperometry testing, and excellent catalytic stability over 200 h. This study underscores the importance of engineering multi-phase heterointerfaces and multiple BIEFs to enhance the OER performance of catalysts.
