Tailoring Ni/Mo2C interfaces via sol–gel assisted confinement strategy for efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution

Yao Han,Liang Yang,Xiangyi Luo,Shan Huang,Ting Yu,Yaohui Qu,Cailei Yuan,Manman Guo

Transition metals and carbides have attracted significant attention as electrocatalysts owing to their high electrical conductivity and strong hydrogen-binding affinity, which was also hindered by limited exposure of active sites and instability. Herein, we report a confined heterostructured catalyst—Ni/Mo 2 C nanoparticles embedded in a porous nitrogen-doped carbon sheets (PNCS)—constructed via the sol–gel synthesis with high-temperature annealing. The interfacial coupling between Ni and Mo 2 C modulated the electronic structure and facilitated faster charge transfer, while the PNCS stabilized the active sites by suppressing nanoparticle agglomeration. Alkaline HER measurements revealed that the Ni/Mo 2 C@PNCS (2:3) catalyst operated with merely 114 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm –2 with a Tafel slope of 63 mV dec –1 , indicating outstanding activity, and maintained robust stability over 100 hours of continuous operation. This work provided a viable strategy for engineering confined TM/TMC heterostructures and offers new insights into designing high-performance non-noble metal-based HER catalysts through interface-driven electronic modulation.

Preparation and electrochemical properties of bimetallic carbide Fe3Mo3C/Mo2C@carbon nanotubes as negative electrode material for supercapacitor

Rui Yang Hu,Li Yuan Liu,Jia Hao He,Yang Zhou,Shi Bo Wu,Mao Xiang Zheng,Muslum Demir,Pian Pian Ma

The recent studies presented that bimetallic carbide is a potential electrode material for supercapacitors owing to its abundant active sites, high conductivity and high electrochemical stability. Besides, making composite of bimetallic carbides with other advanced physical, textural and morphological materials such as graphene, porous carbon or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can critically enhance the electrochemical property of the electrode. In this work, Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs composite material was for the first time prepared by hydrothermal and high temperature carbonization using chitosan as carbon source and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a host. The phase composition, morphology and electrochemical features of Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs composite material were systematically studied. The Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs nanoparticle carbonized at 800 °C shows the optimal electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance reaches 196.3 F g −1 at the scanning rate of 10 mV s −1 (202.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ). Besides, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs and NiCo 2 O 4 electrode yields an energy density of 39.9 Wh Kg −1 when the power density is 1800 W Kg −1 . Meanwhile, the capacitance retention rate reaches 73.9 % after 4000 cycles. Overall, Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs is applied to the negative electrode material of a supercapacitor for the first time, and its outstanding electrochemical behavior indicates the tremendous potential in the electrochemical energy storage field.

Synthesis of Mo2C@MWCNTs and its application in improving the electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of Co0.9Cu0.1Si alloy

Wenhao Fan,Jianxun Zhao,Dayong Liu,Qingcheng Liang,Wanqiang Liu,Xin Guo,Qingshuang Wang,Heng Liu,Peng Chen,Shang Gao,Yong Cheng,Xinwei Wang

The current hydrogen storage alloys used for Ni-MH battery negative electrode are difficult to guarantee excellent performance in terms of discharge capacity and cycle stability. Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy has been widely investigated as a negative electrode material for nickel hydrogen battery, but its capacity and cycle stability need to be improved for commercial applications. In this work, Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying. Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) was loaded on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by in-situ carburizing . In order to improve the electrochemical hydrogen storage performance of Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy, 5 wt% MWCNTs, Mo 2 C and molybdenum carbide modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Mo 2 C@MWCNTs) were added to Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy via mechanical alloying method. The structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by XRD and SEM. The discharge capacity, cyclic stability and high rate discharge performance of the composites were tested, the electrochemical performance of the composites was investigated by three-electrode battery system. The composite materials have better discharge capacity, cycle stability and electrochemical performance compared with the pristine alloy. The Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy doped with 5 wt% Mo 2 C@MWCNTs-2 has the best electrochemical hydrogen storage performance among all the composite materials. Its optimal discharge capacity is 609.9 mAh/g and its maximum capacity retention rate is 64.7 %. The enhancement of the electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of the composites are due to the high conductivity and high specific surface area of MWCNTs and the high catalytic activity of Mo 2 C. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and Mo 2 C can improve the electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of the composites.

Mo2C interface layer: effect on the interface strength and cutting performance of diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites

Xinyue Mao,Qingnan Meng,Mu Yuan,Sifan Wang,Shiyin Huang,Baochang Liu

The weak interfacial strength between Fe-based matrix and diamonds causes diamond particles to fall off prematurely, significantly affecting the cutting efficiency of diamond composites. This work aimed to optimize the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites by coating a Mo 2 C layer on the diamond particles. The Mo 2 C-coated diamonds were prepared via the molten salt method. Diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites were sintered by the hot-pressing process under a vacuum. The bending strength of composites with Mo 2 C-coated diamonds was improved from 804 to 996 MPa with the increased coating time. The energy dispersive spectroscopy scanning indicated that the Mo 2 C coating layer changed the interfacial composition between the matrix and the diamonds from Fe–C alloy to Mo 2 C, improving the interface strength. Moreover, the diamond protrusion heights of composites were raised by adding a Mo 2 C interface, resulting in an improvement in the cutting efficiency of impregnated diamond tools.

Integration of Ni Doping and a Mo2C/MoC Heterojunction for Hydrogen Evolution in Acidic and Alkaline Conditions

Changhai Liu,Lei Sun,Linlin Luo,Wenchang Wang,Huilong Dong,Zhidong Chen

Although nonprecious metal catalysts based on earth-abundant 3d transition metals (TMs) are regarded as promising substitutes for a noble metal electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), their large-scale application is still inhibited by their inadequate activity and durability. Here, a facile method for nonprecious metal catalysts has been developed to prepare molybdenum carbide on nitrogen-doped carbon. By optimizing the Ni doping ratio, the Ni0.5@MoCx/NC exhibits the lowest overpotential for 10 mA cm–2 and superior stability in both acidic and alkaline media for HER application, outperforming most of the reported HER electrocatalysts. In addition, a theoretical simulation has also confirmed the possible mechanism for the synergistic effect with the regulative adsorption energy of hydrogen species with Ni doping and formation of a Mo2C/MoC heterojunction in the Ni0.5@MoCx/NC electrocatalyst. Therefore, this work provides a new avenue for designing two-dimensional nanostructures with an optimized electronic structure for promising TM HER electrocatalysts in a wide pH range.

Insights into N, P, S multi-doped Mo2C/C composites as highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts

Jieyu Xu,Lin Ge,Yajun Zhou,Guangyu Jiang,Liang Li,Yunheng Li,Yongsheng Li

Heteroatom doping has been proved to be an effective strategy to optimize the activity of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein, we report N, P, S multi-doped Mo2C/C composites exhibiting highly efficient HER performance in acidic solution, which are facilely fabricated via annealing of N, P, S-containing MoOx–polyaniline (MoOx–PANI) hybrid precursors. The optimized N, P, S multi-doped Mo2C/C catalyst with a moderate P dopant level (NPS-Mo2C/C-0.5) exhibits excellent performance with an overpotential of 53 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 72 mV dec−1 and good stability in acidic electrolytes. Based on the study of XPS, EPR and 31P MAS NMR, the excellent electrocatalytic performance could be attributed to the effective electronic configuration modulation of both Mo2C nanorods and the carbon matrix, derived from stronger synergistic N, P, S multi-doping coupling effects. This work provides a promising methodology for the design and fabrication of multi-doped transition metal based electrocatalysts via electronic structure engineering.

Anion-Induced Size Selection of β-Mo2C Supported on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Min Ji,Siqi Niu,Yunchen Du,Bo Song,Ping Xu

Molybdenum carbide materials are considered to be promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts due to their similar electronic structures and catalytic activities to Pt-based catalysts. Here, we report a facile synthesis of β-Mo2C nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Mo2C/N–C) through a one-step carbonization of Mo-containing anion-doped polyaniline nanotubes. It has been revealed that the size of the obtained Mo2C nanoparticles can be effectively tuned by applying different Mo-containing anions. With MoO42– from Na2MoO4, the as-prepared Mo2C/N–C(S) with ultrasmall (2–3 nm) Mo2C nanoparticles shows excellent electrocatalytic HER activity in acidic media, with an overpotential of 189 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a geometric current density of −10 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 58 mV dec–1. This study opens up a new avenue for the size-controllable synthesis of transition metal carbide nanoparticles loaded on carbon supports for energy conversion applications.

Constructing multi-interface Mo2C/Co@C nanorods for a microwave response based on a double attenuation mechanism

Sisi Dai,Bin Quan,Baoshan Zhang,Xiaohui Liang,Guangbin Ji

In this work, novel one-dimensional (1D) Mo2C/Co@C nanorods (MCRs), using a metal–organic framework (zeolitic imidazolate framework; ZIF-67) as the coating layer to form multi-interfaces, were formed via a facile hard template method. Compared with previous works relating to porous-carbon-based Mo2C nanocomposites, the well-designed MCRs in this study possess a double attenuation mechanism due to the existence of the dielectric materials Mo2C and remaining carbon (RC) and the magnetic compound Co. Thanks to a new design and the multiple useful compounds, the as-prepared MCRs have the features of demonstrating multi-interfacial polarization, a large surface area and highly isotropic dissipation. Hence, the samples not only inherit the excellent microwave absorbing abilities of Mo2C but they also have a broadened effective bandwidth. For example, the minimum reflection loss (RL) value of MCRs with 35% sample loading could reach −47.98 dB. More importantly, RL values of less than −10 dB can be observed from 11.08 to 17.08 GHz (an effective bandwidth of 6.0 GHz) with a matching thickness of 1.6 mm, which is much better than previous work involving porous-carbon-based Mo2C nanocomposites. Firstly, we have reasonably redesigned the samples to have good absorbing properties for practical applications. Secondly, we have paved a highly efficient and universal way to synthesize 1D microwave absorbers with multiple valuable interfaces.

Modulating hydrogen intermediate on Ru@Mo2C/N-doped carbon fibers boosts ampere-level alkaline/acidic hydrogen evolution performance

Xianqiang Yu,Yuezhu Wang,Mingze Xia,Li Deng,Ruikai Qi,Mingbin Gao,Mengxiao Zhong,Xiaofeng Lu

Manipulating the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts to optimize the adsorption behavior of hydrogen intermediate (H*) is essential for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), representing a key objective in advancing efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) production. Herein, we have engineered the electronic configuration by coupling ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles with molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/N-doped carbon fibers (NCF) to greatly enhance the electrocatalytic alkaline/acidic-universal HER performance. The obtained Ru@Mo 2 C/NCF catalyst exhibits ultralow overpotentials of 182 and 193 mV at an industrial-grade current density (1 A cm⁻ 2 ) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively, significantly surpassing commercial Pt/C and many traditional HER catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrates an exceptional long-term stability in both alkaline and acidic conditions, even greatly better than Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical analysis reveals that the coupling of Ru with Mo 2 C/NCF optimize the H* adsorption and facilitates H 2 releasing. Furthermore, a zinc-water (Zn-H 2 O) battery is assembled to realize highly efficient and simultaneous H 2 and electricity generation, demonstrating its practicability.

A carbon sponge supporting a MoS2-Mo2C heterostructure as the Li2S host for high-performance lithium sulfur batteries

Yuanxiao Ji,Weiye Zhang,Jiarui Xue,Jiyuan Zhang,Yunping Ge,Nan Zhu,Ruibin Jiang,Zhibin Lei,Zonghuai Liu,Jie Sun

Despite their high theoretical capacity and energy density, lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries still face challenges such as soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics. In this work, we used a novel MoS 2 -Mo 2 C heterostructure anchored on a carbon sponge (CS) as a Li 2 S host to solve these problems. A simple hydrothermal process following carbothermal reduction was used to construct the MoS 2 -Mo 2 C heterostructure, enabling control of the phases and integration of MoS 2 and Mo 2 C. Structural characterization confirmed the coherent interface of the heterostructure with a precise orientation relationship between the two phases and their uniform distribution. An evaluation of the adsorption and catalytic performance of the material showed that it has an exceptional LiPSs adsorption capacity with faster conversion from Li 2 S 4 to Li 2 S 2 . Density functional theory calculations further confirmed these results. As a result, the cathode had a high initial discharge capacity of 693 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and achieved stable cycling at 2 C for 500 cycles with a low decay rate of 0.107% per cycle. The heterostructure design, coupled with the macroporous CS framework, effectively prevented the shuttling and increased sulfur utilization, offering a promising way to produce practical high-energy-density Li–S batteries. Mo2C embedded in S-doped carbon nanofibers for high-rate performance and long-life time Na-ion batteries

Li Li,Zhi Chen,Ming Zhang

We succeed in obtaining Mo 2 C embedded in S-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/SC) nanofibers by electrospinning and sulfuration. The use of S-doped carbon not only provides more additional Na + storage active sites to enhance its sodium storage performance, but also increases electrons migration and ions diffusion. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the electrode exhibits excellent rate capacities of 242 and 96 mA h g −1 from 0.1 A g −1 to 5 A g −1 . Excitingly, the high-rate performance is superior, achieving 102.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 over 1000th cycle. This project provides ideas for the development the high-rate and long-term stable of the Mo 2 C in energy storage devices.

Melamine-assisted synthesis of ultrafine Mo2C/Mo2N@N-doped carbon nanofibers for enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Chen Jing,Pan Anqiang,Zhang Wenchao,Cao Xinxin,Lu Rou,Liang Shuquan,Cao Guozhong

Noble metal-free electrocatalysts with high activity are highly desirable for the large-scale application of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Mo 2 C-based nanomaterials have been proved as a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts owing to the Pt-resembled d-band density and optimal intermediates-adsorption properties. However, the aggregation and excessive growth of crystals often occur during their high-temperature synthesis procedure, leading to low catalytic utilization. In this study, the ultrafine Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure with large surface and interface confined in the N-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) was obtained by a melamine-assisted method. The synergistic effect of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and plenty active sites exposed on the surface of ultrafine nanocrystals improves the electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the N-CNFs ensure fast charge transfer and high structural stability during reactions. Moreover, the in-situ synthesis method strengthens the interfacial coupling interactions between Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and N-CNFs, further enhancing the electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. Owing to these advantages, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N@N-CNFs exhibit excellent HER performance with a low overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mV cm −2 in alkaline solution, superior to the single phased Mo 2 C counterpart and recently reported Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N based catalysts. This study highlights a new effective strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts via integrating heterostructure, nanostructure and carbon modification.
