Recently, Mo-based metal catalysts are widely applied in the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) due to the lower binding energy between the Mo atom and N atom. The design of a Mo-based catalyst@carbon heterostructure and the introduction of anion vacancies are effective measures to improve their NRR performance. In this research, the cross-linked Vo-MoO2@C (Vo means oxygen vacancies) heterostructure nanoparticles with rich oxygen vacancies are first synthesized via pectin assisted hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination and treating with NaBH4 solution. Vo-MoO2@C exhibits good electrocatalytic NRR performance with an ammonia yield rate of 9.75 μg h–1 mg–1 at −0.5 V (RHE) and a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 3.24% at −0.3 V (RHE) under ambient conditions.

Owing to the mixed insertion and multielectron conversion reaction mechanisms, nonstoichiometric copper selenide (Cu2–xSe) has been known as a potential anode for lithium-ion batteries. However, huge volume changes during discharge and charge limit its ability for lithium-ion storage. Constructing heterophase nanocomposite uniformly distributed in the carbon network has been recognized as an effective approach to address the above issue. In this work, polyoxometalate-based metal–organic frameworks were used as the self-template to derive octahedral mesoporous carbon-coated heterophase copper selenide and molybdenum dioxide (MoO2/Cu2–xSe@C) nanocomposites, and the phase transformation of copper selenides from CuSe to Cu2–xSe can be achieved by tuning the pyrolysis temperature, thus optimizing the electrochemical performance. As a result, the optimized electrode delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 864.8 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 100 cycles, an excellent rate capability with a capacity of 480.9 mAh g–1 at 2.0 A g–1, and a long-term stability up to 500 cycles with a capacity decay rate per cycle of only 0.003%. Also, the reaction mechanism and structural stability after cycling were analyzed in detail.

The inferior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance of MoS 2 can be attributed to its small edge ratio, large inert substrate surface, and poor electrical conductivity, while the multiple strategies are expected to be employed simultaneously to modulate the electronic structure of MoS 2 and yield catalysts with superior HER catalytic performance. Here, we report a MoS 2 containing a 1 T phase with expanded layer spacing and construct it as a heterostructured material with MoO 2 (MoO 2 @E-MoS 2 ). Specifically, the presence of the 1 T phase and expanded layer structure of MoS 2 can enhance electrode conductivity, increase active site exposure, promote H 2 O adsorption, and optimize the Gibbs-free energy of hydrogen. The constructed heterostructure can modulate the electronic structure of the catalyst, enhance electron transfer at the interface, elevate water adsorption energy, and reduce the hydrogen reaction energy barrier. Moreover, density functional theory calculations indicate that the S site of MoS 2 in this catalyst exhibits a higher affinity for H 2 O adsorption, while the Mo site demonstrates a greater capacity for H* adsorption/desorption. Ultimately, MoO 2 @E-MoS 2 shows low overpotentials of 93 and 99 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , as well as exceptional long-term stabilities exceeding 70 and 130 h at current densities ranging from 10 to 30 mA cm −2 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively.

A traditional preparation process of Mo powder is generally time-consuming and leads to coarse particles. In this work, we propose a short-flow strategy, in which the intermediate product of MoO2 is prepared by a one-step self-reduction method in air instead of a mixture of decomposition and hydrogen reduction processes. And the reaction mechanism of self-reduction is investigated and the consequent sintering performance of Mo powder is also compared with the traditional one. The obtained results demonstrate that the finally synthesized Mo–La2O3 powder prepared by the self-reduction strategy are spherical with an average particle size of 2.03 μm, exhibiting an excellent sintering performance with a relative density of 95.3% and a hardness of 260.6 (HV), better than those by a traditional one (93.4% and 232.4 (HV)), which can be attributed to smaller particle size and better shapes. This work provides a new route for the synthesis of Mo–La2O3 powder, indicating a possible industrial application.

The present preparation methods of molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) quantum dots (QDs) are often cumbersome and not environmentally friendly, and more importantly, the prepared MoO2QDs are usually wrapped in surfactants, which are difficult to be removed and impact their intrinsic characterization and performance. Herein, we present a facile, scalable and sustainable approach to obtain clean and pure MoO2QDs (1.5~3 nm), which consists of a hydrothermal reaction and a further calcination process in vacuum following freeze drying. Furthermore, the influence of calcination temperature, atmosphere and time is also studied. The calcination at 400 °C for 2 h in vacuum can efficiently remove the surfactants wrapping on the MoO2QDs without obvious size change, whereas the calcination in nitrogen will lead to a slight increase in size, and the calcination in air could transform MoO2QDs into MoO3nanoplates. In addition, the pseudocapacitive performance of the as-prepared samples is tested and compared by electrochemical methods, and the specific capacitance of the clean MoO2QDs is about 1.4 times larger than that of MoO2QDs with surfactants at 5 mV s−1. This study also demonstrates a possible way to efficiently remove the organic substance wrapping on quantum dot materials.

A hetero-structured few-layer MoS 2 -coated MoO 2 (MoS 2 @MoO 2 ) has been fabricated and applied as an anode material for LIBs . The MoS 2 @MoO 2 was synthesized via two-step fire process: reducing MoO 3 vapor with H 2 for producing Mo powder, and oxidizing-sulfurizing Mo powder with SO 2 . With the aid of thermodynamic computations, it is found that Mo oxidation under SO 2 atmosphere produces limited amounts of S 2 vapor, which will locally sulfurize the particles nearby, resulting in finite and even sulfurization. The as-prepared MoS 2 @MoO 2 includes few-layer MoS 2 (about 3 nm thick) covering the surface, which serves a well-spreading and active material that synergizes with inner MoO 2 to boost the performance for LIBs. Thus, the MoS 2 @MoO 2 could deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1263 mA h g −1 after 40 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , and maintain a specific capacity of 1052 mA h g −1 after 150 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 . Even at 0.5 A g −1 , the specific capacity could still keep above 650 mA h g −1 for over 500 cycles. The new method for MoS 2 @MoO 2 synthesis is facile and effective, and may be extended to produce hybrids composed of other transition metal oxides and sulfides.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions offers a sustainable alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. However, the two canonical catalytic pathways face intrinsic limitations: the alternating mechanism suffers from high *NH 2 NH 2 desorption losses, while the distal pathway requires prohibitive activation energy for N 2 protonation. The simultaneous realization of high activity and selectivity thus remains a critical challenge. Here, we demonstrate that boron doping modulates the electronic structure of Mo 2 TiC 2 T x /MoO 2 by upshifting the d -/ p -band center toward the Fermi level, unveiling the dominant a hybrid “distal-alternating” pathway that favors the *NNHH → *NHNH 2 transition rather than the *NNHH → *N cleavage. In addition, the electron-deficient B sites weaken the binding affinity toward Lewis-acidic protons under acidic conditions, thereby effectively suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Significant interfacial charge transfer from MoO 2 to the B@Mo 2 TiC 2 T x surface further ensures a sufficient electron supply for N 2 activation and stepwise hydrogenation. As a result, B@Mo 2 TiC 2 T x /MoO 2 delivers an impressive ammonia yield of 121.18 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 75.94% at a mild potential of –0.2 V vs . RHE. This work unveils the mechanistic feasibility of a non-classical hybrid NRR pathway and establishes a rational strategy for designing next-generation high-efficiency nitrogen reduction electrocatalysts.

Mo-based catalysts have received widespread attention for their promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. However, single Mo-based catalysts still have some shortcomings in terms of catalytic activity. Designing heterostructure is an effective strategy to optimize electron configuration, accelerate HER dynamics and modulate microstructure. Herein, a novel cross-linked sheet-like r-FeMo/NF (Fe 2 N/Mo 2 N/MoO 2 ) electrocatalyst with multiple heterostructures was prepared by a facile two-step method involving hydrothermal growth followed by nitridation, which directly formed the active material on nickel foam (NF). The formation of multiple heterostructures results in the redistribution of electrons between Fe and Mo species, promoting charge transfer and improving HER activity. As a result, the as-prepared r-FeMo/NF catalyst demands a low overpotential of 46.1 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the HER in 1 M KOH. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding long-term stability, maintaining excellent performance for 100 h at both 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . This work can provide valuable insights into designing highly efficient electrocatalysts with multiple heterostructures.

The development of hierarchical heterostructured materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) remains hindered by suboptimal high-rate cycling performance, primarily due to phase interface pulverization and separation during charge–discharge processes. To address these challenges, we designed a carbon-free hierarchical structure comprising few-layered MoS₂ nanosheets and MoO₂ nanocrystals through precise compositional optimization and rational structural engineering. The heterogeneous components are interconnected through robust S─O covalent bonds, which theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm generate a built-in electric field at the heterointerfaces, significantly enhancing reaction kinetics. Crucially, these covalent bonds stabilize the heterointerfaces, improving structural integrity and mitigating electrode material agglomeration and pulverization. Additionally, the MoS₂/MoO₂ heterostructure enhances Na⁺ adsorption energetics and reduces Na⁺ diffusion barriers, facilitating efficient ion transport. Leveraging its abundant heterointerfaces and stable architecture, the composite delivers exceptional rate performance (432.7 mAh·g⁻¹ at 10 A·g⁻¹) and outstanding cycling stability (nearly 100% capacity retention over 400 cycles at 5 A·g⁻¹). This work provides a strategic framework for designing heterostructured materials with stable interface-rich architectures, advancing the development of high-performance conversion/alloy-type anodes for energy storage applications. Graphical The study designs a carbon-free MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure with abundant heterointerfaces and strong chemical bonding. The formed S─O bonds generate an internal built-in electric field, endowing the heterostructure with metallic conductivity and high Na + adsorption energy. The rational structural design ensures fast reaction kinetics and a stable heterointerface, enabling superior high-rate Na + -ion storage performance.

Graphical Hollow can you go? Hollow MoO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (MoO 2 /rGO) sub-microsphere composites have been fabricated through a simple hydrothermal approach followed by heat treatment. Even when cycled at 500 mA g −1 , a high charge specific capacity of 104.2 mAh g −1 is achieved after 500 cycles. The excellent cycling capability and rate performance may be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the reduced graphene oxide and the hollow MoO 2 spheres, which can increase the electrical conductivity of the composite, as well as resisting the strain arising from the repeated discharge–charge processes. These results indicate that the MoO 2 /rGO hollow sphere composites are promising negative electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

Both sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and nanozymes can be considered specialized forms of catalysis, which are related to the electron structure. In this work, Fe doping was employed to introduce electronic localization and spin polarization toward porous MoO 2 nanospheres to improve the anticancer catalytic efficiency. All the Fe atoms are single-distributed to substitute for some lattice positions of Mo. Compared with MoO 2 @PEG, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG results in a 2.8-fold increase in ROS generation, which is attributed to spin polarization. This phenomenon enhances charge separation, increases conductivity, and promotes O₂ adsorption, thereby significantly improving the ROS production efficiency. Furthermore, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG also has superior mimic-catalase (CAT) activity (318,467 U g −1 ), which is even greater than that of natural catalase (220,834 U g −1 ). Compare with MoO 2 @PEG Fe doping increased the activity by 76.0 times because electron localization can decrease the free energy of the redox reaction. This novel CAT ability can convert endogenous H 2 O 2 into O 2 , alleviating tumor hypoxia and increasing ROS production. Notably, MoO₂/Fe@PEG also mimics GSH oxidase and NADPH oxidase (NOX) activities to consume GSH and restrain its regeneration at the same time, contributing to oxidative stress. The synergistic effects of SDT and multiple enzymes not only exhibit potent tumor inhibition but also elicit a robust immune response to prevent metastasis and recurrence.

The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes is critical for renewable energy technologies, but still challenging in seawater electrolysis at ampere-level current density. Herein, we design a nanoarray composite catalyst Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 through one-step hydrothermal and post-phosphidation, which shows excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in all alkaline, simulated seawater and seawater electrolytes at ampere-level current density, with low overpotentials of 328, 352 and 364 mV, respectively. Furthermore, an overall urea-assisted water splitting electrolyzer obtained by using Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 as the bifunctional catalyst can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.36 V and operate stably for 100 h. In situ ATR-FTIR monitors the dynamic adsorption behavior of the important intermediate *OH on the surface of electrocatalysts. A series of density functional theory calculations further uncover the incorporation of W ameliorates the microenvironment of the MoO 2 and decreases the H 2 O/*OH adsorption/dissociation energy barriers, simultaneously optimizing the H* Gibbes free energy on the Ni 2 P, which achieves superior electrochemical water splitting performance. This work breaks through the proton-deficient dilemma of the alkaline HER at ampere-level current density and provides new insights into the design of cost-efficiency and environmentally friendly transition metal-based catalysts.
