Single-component transition metal selenide (TMSe) hosts still struggle to balance the adsorption of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and their catalytic conversion. Herein, a heterostructure host (MoSe 2 -CoSe@C) with an intra-spherical interwoven architecture was synthesized via impregnation-chemical vapor deposition. Benefiting from the synergy of adsorptive MoSe 2 and conductive CoSe, the heterointerface induces electron transfer from CoSe to MoSe 2 , upshifting the d-band center to enhance LPSs adsorption. Compared with their single-component hosts, the MoSe 2 -CoSe@C notably reduces the energy barriers of sulfur redox reactions, decreasing those for Li 2 S oxidation by 31.45 kJ mol −1 and for Li 2 S 4 reduction by 191.67 kJ mol −1 . Additionally, Co acts not only as a core component of the heterostructure but also induces the conversion of carbon-based materials into carbon nanotubes at high temperatures, thus forming a unique interwoven network. This network not only ensures efficient electron transport and inhibits the agglomeration of active components, but also increases the contact area between the host and active sulfur, thereby enhancing the number of effective catalytic sites. Consequently, the MoSe 2 -CoSe@C/S cathode achieves a discharge specific capacity of 582.1 mAh g −1 at a current density of 5C, with only 0.07% capacity decay per cycle over 200 cycles at 4C. This work provides a strategy to construct high-performance adsorption-catalytic hosts for lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs).

MoSe 2 nanosheets vertically grown on graphene via hydrothermal synthesis. • Expanded interlayer spacing (0.686 nm) provides additional free volume for transport. • Maximum enrichment factor of 5.24 and flux of 4960 g·m −2 ·h −1 achieved. • Selective thiophene transport via σ-coordination and d–π coupling. • Stable performance over 7 days for industrial gasoline desulfurization. Hybrid membranes were fabricated by embedding vertically aligned molybdenum diselenide arrays on graphene (MoSe 2 ⊥G) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for thiophene removal from n -octane by pervaporation. The MoSe 2 ⊥G nanocomposite was synthesized through a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal route, in which ultrathin MoSe 2 nanosheets were grown perpendicular to graphene substrates. The introduction of MoSe 2 ⊥G substantially enhanced the desulfurization performance, which was attributed to the expanded interlayer spacing and abundant active edge sites of MoSe 2 . The former provided additional free volume for mass transport, and the latter enabled the selective facilitated transport of thiophene through σ-coordination bonding and d–π electronic coupling. An optimum enrichment factor of 5.24, corresponding to a permeation flux of 4960 g·m −2 ·h −1 , was obtained upon the incorporation of 0.3 wt% MoSe 2 ⊥G with 1312 ppm thiophene in n -octane at 303 K. Notably, the hybrid membrane maintained stable performance over a 7-day period. This work offers an effective strategy for developing two-dimensional material-based separation membranes for industrial-scale gasoline desulfurization. Development of highly-efficient heterostructured photocatalysts capable of fully utilizing full solar spectrum has emerged as a focal point in photocatalytic H 2 evolution from water splitting. Herein, Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/MoSe 2 composite was successfully constructed by attaching full-spectrum responsive MoSe 2 nanospheres on surface of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S polyhedra via in-situ hydrothermal process. The optimal Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/MoSe 2 -5wt% composite photocatalyst yielded the H 2 evolution rate of 34.31 mmol g –1 h –1 under full-spectrum light, significantly surpassing the activities obtained under near-infrared (NIR), ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis), Vis-NIR and UV-Vis light alone. This outstanding property could be attributed to the synergetic effects of p−n heterojunction and photothermal effect, effectively accelerating interfacial charge transfer, elevating reaction system's temperature and expediting surface reaction, thereby promoting the photocatalytic reaction of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S. This study offers a valuable perspective on utilizing MoSe 2 to construct an efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalysis system.

The exploration of high-performance, low-cost, and dual-function electrodes is crucial for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) to meet the relentless demand for green H2production. In this study, a heteroatom-doped carbon-cage-supported CoSe2@MoSe2@NC catalyst with a formicarium structure has been fabricated using a scalable one-step selenization strategy. The component-refined bifunctional catalyst exhibited minimal overpotential values of 116 mV and 283 mV at 10 mA cm−2in 1 M KOH for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Specifically, rationally designed heterostructures and flexible carbonaceous sponges facilitate interfacial reaction equalization, modulate local electronic distributions, and establish efficient electron transport pathways, thereby enhancing catalytic activity and durability. Furthermore, the assembled AEMWE based on the CoSe2@MoSe2@NC bifunctional catalysts can achieve a current density of 106 mA cm−2at 1.9 V and maintain a favorable durability after running for 100 h (a retention of 95%). This work highlights a new insight into the development of advanced bifunctional catalysts with enhanced activity and durability for AEMWE.

Establishing advanced sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with high energy density and eco-friendly electrode materials are still far from satisfactory due to the large-size of sodium-ions and sluggish redox kinetics during electrochemical processes. Herein, a novel ultrafast kinetics net electrode assembled via MoSe 2 /MXene heterojunction is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing. Featuring the Van der Waals force interaction between MoSe 2 and MXene , the volumetric change during the sodium ions insertion/extraction courses is effectively restrained, and the reaction kinetics is greatly enhanced further. Meanwhile, both the high electrical and ion conductivity (lower diffusion barrier between Na + /MXene ~0.066 eV) provided by the unique MXene based net heterostructure of our hybrid materials, as evidenced by DFT calculations, are beneficial to the transportation of sodium ions, thus enabling an outstanding rate and long-cycling capability. As a result, the fabricated cells exhibit high reversible capacities of 490 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , as well as 250 mAh g −1 at a high current of 10 A g −1 with a coulombic efficiency of 99.8%, indicating the excellent electrochemical performance of our hybrid materials, especially at high current. This novel net MoSe 2 /MXene heterostructure, combined with our simple synthesis strategy together, are expected to have great potential in sodium-ions storage application.

Metal selenides have attracted increased attention as promising electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems including metal-ion batteries and water splitting. However, their practical application is greatly hindered by collapse of the microstructure, thus leading to performance fading. Tuning the structure at nanoscale of these materials is an effective strategy to address the issue. Herein, we craft MoSe2 with hierarchical hollow structures via a facile bubble-assisted solvothermal method. The temperature-related variations of the hollow interiors are studied, which can be presented as solid, yolk–shell, and hollow spheres, respectively. Under the simultaneous action of the distinctive hollow structures and interconnections among the nanosheets, more intimate contacts between MoSe2 and electrolyte can be achieved, thereby leading to superior electrochemical properties. Consequently, the MoSe2 hollow nanospheres prepared under optimum conditions exhibit optimal electrochemical activities, which hold an initial specific capacity of 1287 mA h g–1 and maintain great capacity even after 100 cycles as anode for Li-ion battery. Moreover, the Tafel slope of 58.9 mV dec–1 for hydrogen evolution reaction is also attained.

Hydrogen generation from methanol via methanol-assisted water splitting is a promising electrochemical energy conversion technology but still meets challenges in addressing the low intrinsic activity and easy poisoning problems of the conventional Pt catalysts. Herein, the support engineering modulated Pt by hierarchical MoSe 2 @mesoporous hollow carbon support was proposed to integrate some structural and catalytic advantages for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Supporting engineering by layered MoSe 2 nanosheets confined in mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (MHCSs) is adopted to uniformly anchor Pt nanoparticles (Pt/MoSe 2 @MHCS), which effectively enhances the conductivity and prevents the layer-by-layer stacking of MoSe 2 ; Strong interaction and coupling ability between Pt and MoSe 2 and the resultant electronic structure regulation of the active centers could weaken the binding strength of CO* and H* intermediates during catalysis and strengthen the oxophilicity leading to improved MOR and HER kinetics. Specifically, Pt/MoSe 2 @MHCS shows a significantly improved MOR current density of 81.1 mA cm −2 , about 3.0 times that of the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Meanwhile, it also exhibits the HER performance of 28 mV to achieve a kinetic current density of 10 mA cm −2 in methanol-contained electrolytes. When employed for overall methanol electrolysis, a lowered input voltage of 1.11 V can be obtained to drive the current density (10 mA cm −2 ) compared to that for water electrolysis (0.62 V vs. 1.73 V). The electrochemical properties of high activity, rapid catalytic kinetics, and good stability were also demonstrated due to the enhanced oxophilicity and high poisoning tolerance ability resulting from the MoSe 2 /carbon substrate-induced electron redistribution of Pt sites. This work reports a novel platform to address the catalysis challenges in hydrogen production via the methanol electrolysis technique.

A hierarchically porous nanocomposite of few-layer MoSe2/nitrogen-doped carbon (MoSe2/NC) has been synthesized through an efficient route combining a sol–gel method and annealing techniques. Furthermore, a lithium-ion-based dual-ion battery configuration using the MoSe2/NC nanocomposite as the anode and commercial graphite as the cathode (MoSe2/NC-G Li-DIB) has been proposed for the first time and demonstrated a reversible discharge capacity of 86 mA h g–1 at 2C (1C = 100 mA g–1) after 150 cycles and a high rate capability up to 76 mA h g–1 even at 20C within an operating voltage region as high as 2.0–5.0 V. These remarkable electrochemical properties are mainly attributed to the unique composition and construction of the MoSe2/NC nanocomposite in which the hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon matrix not only helps to homogeneously disperse the in situ-formed few-layer MoSe2 nanosheets, shortening the Li+ diffusion pathway and exposing more active sites for Li+ storage, but also enhances the electrical conductivity and alleviates the volume changes during the cycling process.

Bifunctional Ir catalysts for proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis offer transformative potential by streamlining electrolyzer while achieving efficient performance remains challenging due to the distinct conditions required for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER and HER). Herein, we propose a theory-directed design of Ir-based bifunctional catalysts, Ir nanoparticles supported on mesoporous carbon spheres embedded with MoSe 2 (Ir/MoSe 2 @MCS), leveraging a work function (WF)-induced spontaneous built-in electric field to enhance catalytic performance. They demonstrate exceptional kinetics for both OER and HER, and potential application in the practical PEM electrolyzer, showcasing the effectiveness of this innovative approach. Low overpotentials of 252 mV for OER and 28 mV for HER to drive 10 mA cm –2 were observed, and the PEM electrolyzer showed the current density of 2 A cm –2 at 1.87 V and maintained stable activity at 1.65 V for over 30 h to deliver 1 A cm –2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal that the WF difference at Ir/MoSe 2 interface induces a spontaneous built-in electric field with asymmetric charge distributions, that modulate the electronic environment and d -band center of Ir promoting bifunctional active phase formation. This significantly lowers reaction barriers for water splitting by balancing intermediate adsorption, endowing the bifunctional activity.

Electrochemical water splitting is very attractive for green fuel energy production, but the development of active, stable, and earth-abundant catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a major challenge. Here, core–shell nanostructured architectures are used to design and fabricate efficient and stable HER catalysts from earth-abundant components. Vertically oriented quasi-2D core–shell MoO 2 /MoSe 2 nanosheet arrays are grown onto insulating (SiO 2 /Si wafer) or conductive (carbon cloth) substrates. This core–shell nanostructure array architecture exhibits synergistic properties to create superior HER performance, where high density structural defects and disorders on the shell generated by a large crystalline mismatch of MoO 2 and MoSe 2 act as multiple active sites for HER, and the metallic MoO 2 core facilitates charge transport for proton reduction while the vertical nanosheet arrays ensure fully exposed active sites toward electrolytes. As a HER catalyst, this electrode exhibits a low Tafel slope of 49.1 mV dec −1 , a small onset potential of 63 mV, and an ultralow charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) of 16.6 Ω at an overpotential of 300 mV with a long cycling durability for up to 8 h. This work suggests that a quasi 2D core–shell nanostructure combined with a vertical array microstructure is a promising strategy for efficient water splitting electrocatalysts with scale-up potential.

Owing to their low cost and abundant reserves, aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) have been considered a potential candidate for future large-scale storage applications. However, AIBs are still in the stage of intensive research due to their cathodes of limited specific capacity, energy density, and cycling stability. In this work, interlayer-expanded MoSe2/nitrogen-doped graphene (MoSe2/N-G) heterojunctions with fewer layers and fine dispersion are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Experimental verification and theoretical calculation reveal that the unique heterojunction structure and hetero-element doped graphene conductive network are beneficial for improving the electrochemical reaction kinetics and provide more active vacancies for AIBs, as well as slow the structural degradation during the discharge/charge process. When serving as a cathode material for AIBs, the as-prepared MoSe2/N-G electrode presents a high specific capacity of 167 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1. Meanwhile, the hybrid also exhibits excellent cycling stability (140 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 1000 cycles) with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.54% and less than 16% loss of discharge capacity. As verified by ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)/transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization and first-principles calculations, the Al3+ intercalation mechanism of the MoSe2/N-G electrode in AIBs are further confirmed.

A photoelectrochemical immunosensor was fabricated for squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) assay with high performances by using MoSe 2 nanosheets and hollow gold nanospheres as photosensitive materials. MoSe 2 nanosheets were simply synthesized with a hydrothermal method using 1,3-di-(3-thioacetylpropyl)-imidazolium bromide (DITAPIBr) ionic liquid as a morphological controlling reagent, selenium powder, and sodium molybdate as raw materials. Hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs) were prepared by using 1,3-di-(3-bromopropyl)-imidazolium bromide ionic liquid (DIBPIBr) as functional monomer, and NaBH 4 as a reductant to interact with the HAuCl 4 solution. Subsequently, HGNs were integrated with MoSe 2 nanosheets to provide a HGNs-MoSe 2 nanocomposite. The photocurrent intensity of MoSe 2 nanosheets was significantly enhanced by the hybridization of HGNs. Furthermore, HGNs-MoSe 2 nanocomposites were coated onto a glassy carbon electrode surface to construct a platform for the immobilization of SCCA antibody (anti-SCCA), resulted in a photoelectrochemical immunosensing system for determining SCCA. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated immunosensor shows high selectivity and sensitivity towards SCCA, and exhibits a detection limit of 0.21 pg mL −1 and a linear range from 1.0 pg mL −1 to 50 ng mL −1 . Meanwhile, the practicability of the immunosensor was demonstrated by determining SCCA in clinical serum samples with high accuracy.
