Efficient bifacial perovskite solar cell based on a highly transparent poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) as the p-type hole-transporting material

Yaoming Xiao,Gaoyi Han,Jihuai Wu,Jeng-Yu Lin

A novel bifacial perovskite solar cell (PSC) is devised and prepared by using a highly transparent poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) electrode. The PEDOT is used as the p-type hole-transporting material (HTM) due to the well matched band positions for the charge separation and transport. Moreover, the PEDOT layer can play a role of electron blocking layer at the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /PEDOT interface to reduce the electron recombination rate because of its LUMO level is higher than that of the perovskite sensitizer. As a result, the bifacial PSC based on the PEDOT HTM yields front and rear efficiencies of 12.33% and 11.78% respectively, which are higher than those of the PSC without the PEDOT HTM (8.67% and 8.27% of the front and rear efficiencies). And the front efficiency is only decreased by 4.46% to the rear efficiency. These promising results highlight the potential application of the PEDOT in the cost-effective and transparent PSC, which could be used in the bifacial solar cell and tandem solar cell .

Abdul Rehman Akbar,Adil Saleem,Abdur Rauf,Rashid Iqbal,Muhammad Tahir,Gangqiang Peng,Abdul Sammed Khan,Arshad Hussain,Muhammad Ahmad,Mansoor Akhtar,Mumtaz Ali,Chuanxi Xiong,Quanling Yang,Ghaffar Ali,Fude Liu

Advanced flexible supercapacitors with high energy/power density are an imperative research objective. In this study, a dually activated carbon cloth is designed as the functional current collector for supercapacitors. An electrodeposition technique is used for engineering Manganese Dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanoflakes and profiting from a Poly (3,4 ethylene dioxythiophene; PEDOT) shield layer, a Li + -based neutral electrolyte high-performance freestanding asymmetric supercapacitors is constructed. The activated carbon cloth (ACC) provides an efficient electron-carrying route and the hierarchical nanostructure of the ACC@MnO 2 @PEDOT electrode. The integrated ACC@MnO 2 @PEDOT electrode exhibited exceptional capacitance performance of 1882.5 mF cm −2 (current density 1 mA cm −2 ) in 1.5 M aqueous LiCl electrolyte benefiting from ACC scaffold, the pseudocapacitive activity of MnO 2 and substantial conductivity of the PEDOT polymer. Fabricating the structured electrode into an asymmetric supercapacitor revealed an enhanced areal energy density and an areal power density. The fabricated device demonstrated a broad voltage window of 1.8 V and extraordinary cycling stability of 94.6% after 10000 charge-discharge cycles. The unique scaffold, conducting PEDOT polymer, and MnO 2 nanoflakes synergistically improved the cyclic performance and rate proficiency of the electrode, resulting in a supercapacitor with bendable electrical energy storage applications.

High-Stability PEDOT Dispersions via In Situ Polymerization Based on Sulfated Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)

Shuibo Zheng,Xijun Wang,Jilong Mo,Pinhong Chen,Peng Lei,Haisong Qi

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is widely utilized in flexible electronics, energy storage, and sensors for its excellent conductivity and stability. However, the primary limitation of PEDOT is its poor dispersibility in aqueous systems due to the aggregation driven by hydrophobic groups in the polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) backbone, which restricts its conductivity. To address this challenge, we designed sulfated poly(vinyl alcohol) (SPVA), which features a hydrophilic backbone and serves as an alternative to PSS, thereby enhancing the dispersibility of PEDOT in aqueous systems. This approach achieves a 2.4-fold increase in dispersibility and a 3.2-fold boost in conductivity compared to conventional methods. Furthermore, these dispersions demonstrate outstanding printability on various substrates, highlighting their potential as conductive inks for printed electronics.

Synergistic PEDOT-NiCo(OH)2 heterostructure for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Sobia Yaseen,Saddam Hussain,Sabeen Fatima,Nabi Ullah,Lu Zaijun

Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for antibiotic remediation in wastewater treatment owing to its environmentally benign nature, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, a PEDOT- NiCo(OH) 2 hybrid photocatalyst is successfully synthesized and, systematically investigated for visible-light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation. Structural engineering via optimized incorporation of bimetallic hydroxide (NiCo(OH) 2 ) into the PEDOT markedly enhances the specific surface area (∼188 m 2 g −1 ) and pore size of 5.29 nm, while significantly narrowing the optical band gap to ∼1.79 eV, enabling efficient visible light harvesting. Electrochemical analyses demonstrate a substantially reduced charge-transfer resistance and an enhanced photocurrent response for PEDOT-Ni(OH) 2 2:1 (P-NCH21), indicating accelerated interfacial charge transport and suppressed electron–hole recombination. Consequently, P-NCH21 achieves an exceptional TC removal efficiency of 97.6% within 35 min under visible-light irradiation, far outperforming P-NH and PEDOT-Ni(OH) 2 3:1 (P-NCH31), having degradation efficiencies of 67 and 92%, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirm that the generation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide (•O 2 ⁻) and (•OH) are the reactive species that drives the photocatalytic degradation process. Furthermore, the hybrid photocatalyst exhibits excellent stability, retaining ∼96.8% of its initial activity after five consecutive cycles. This study highlights the potential of P-NCH21 as an efficient and robust photocatalyst for antibiotic remediation, providing new insights into the design of conductive polymer–based hybrid materials for environmental applications.

PEDOT/PSS Heterointerface Enables Integrated Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Thermal Protection in Aerogel Composite

Ziwen Sun,Quan Yuan,Liwei Yan,Junyu Lu,Weiyi Ding,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

Traditional high-density thermal protection systems (TPSs) limit the maneuverability of hypersonic vehicles while lacking stealth capabilities. In this work, we propose a strategy to integrate electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in an aerogel composite by introducing a PEDOT:PSS heterointerface via ethanol-assisted gel impregnation. Ethanol also functions as secondary doping, enabling tuning of the electromagnetic parameters of the aerogel by adjusting the doping level. This can achieve a balance between microwave attenuation and impedance matching in the aerogel, leading to excellent broadband microwave absorption with a minimum reflection loss of −37 dB at 30 mm thickness and an effective bandwidth of 13.3 GHz. During ablation, the PEDOT:PSS heterointerface can also induce a thermal blocking effect that can suppress the melting of high-silica fiber, helping maintain the three-dimensional skeletal support of fiber felt, thereby enhancing the aerogel composite’s resistance to oxyacetylene flame attack. Therefore, the aerogel composite exhibits a low linear ablation rate of 0.03 mm/s under 1 MW/m2 and, after 96 s of exposure to 1800 °C flame, maintains a backside temperature of only 61 °C. This work provides a feasible strategy for achieving integrated electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in aerogel composites, which has potential for next-generation lightweight TPS applications.

PEDOT-functionalized carbon nanotubes for anticorrosive reinforcement of epoxy coatings on sintered NdFeB magnets

Shen Zihan,Yang Hongyi,Zhang Pengjie,Cui Jiewu,Wang Dongmei,Shen Wangqiang,Xu Guangqing,Lv Jun

Solving the problems of interfacial compatibility and dispersibility between filler and epoxy resin (EP) can greatly improve the anticorrosion performances of epoxy coatings and expand their application field. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were modified by poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) to form PCNTs hybrids, and the cathodic electrophoretic deposition method was used to form composite epoxy coatings on the surface of sintered NdFeB magnets for enhancing the anticorrosion performance. The corrosion resistance of PCNTs was evaluated by electrochemical and static immersion corrosion tests. Results indicate that PCNTs hybrids possess better distribution and compatibility in epoxy resin than CNTs hybrids, resulting in the anticorrosion performances of higher density of composite epoxy coatings on NdFeB magnets. Optimized EP/PCNTs possess a much higher \(\left| Z \right|\) 0.01 Hz of 4.41 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 and a much lower J corr of 9.648 × 10 − 10 A·cm − 2 than that of EP (1.34 × 10 4 Ω·cm 2 and J corr 4.436 × 10 − 6 A·cm − 2 ), demonstrating superior corrosion resistance.

Structurally tunable conductive wood sponge incorporated with PEDOT: PSS for enhanced piezoresistive sensor applications

Wu You,Liu Junhui,Hu Zhengchuan,Zhou Weibo,Wu Wei,Wang Jieqiong,Ao Yuhui,Li Ming

Wearable strain sensors are gaining popularity in the field of intelligent electronic devices due to their compactness and mobility. In this study, we presented a wearable, pliable piezoresistive sensor derived from a wooden sponge integrated with the conductive polymer PEDOT. The conductive network of PEDOT: PSS underwent modulation through the incorporation of a cross-linking agent, namely, γ - glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GOPS), aimed at enhancing the sensor's sensitivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that GOPS cross-linked with PEDOT: PSS. Crosslinking induced by GOPS helped PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. Benefitting from this micro-network structure, the wood sponge/PEDOT:PSS/GOPS (WPG) exhibited a high sensitivity of 5.69 kPa −1 and a fast response time of 111 ms, with exceptional stability and durability (over 500 cycles), making it suitable for detecting subtle muscle changes. Crosslinking induced by GOPS induced PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. The micro-network structure presented a novel approach for designing piezoresistive sensors.

Scalable and High-Performance Infrared Electrochromic Devices Enabled by Solvent-Engineered PEDOT/PSS Films

Wenchao Liu,Leipeng Zhang,Dongqi Liu,Rui Yang,Zetuo Lv,Yike Zhang,Lei Xu,Qiumei Jiang,Yuqiang Wang,Jiupeng Zhao,Yao Li

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) based infrared electrochromic devices (IR-ECDs) show great potential for dynamic thermal management applications. However, their practical deployment is limited by a slow response, poor cycling stability, and scalable fabrication challenges. In this study, we report a scalable, solution-processed strategy for fabricating large-area, flexible PEDOT/PSS IR-ECDs using a one-step solvent post-treatment to selectively remove insulating PSS. This treatment markedly enhances film conductivity, which, in turn, accelerates charge transport and facilitates robust electrochromic switching. The resulting devices demonstrate rapid switching behavior, excellent cycling stability, and a notable mid-infrared emissivity modulation (Δε8–14 μm) of 0.23. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that IR modulation of PEDOT/PSS arises primarily from conductivity changes driven by reversible ion doping/dedoping. When the conductivity exceeds ∼500 S/cm, its long-wave IR reflectance closely follows predictions from Drude theory. This study not only offers new insights into the IR electrochromic mechanism of PEDOT/PSS but also opens up opportunities for scalable, cost-effective, and high-performance thermal modulation technologies with potential applications in adaptive concealment, information display, and intelligent thermal regulation.

Wearable In-Ear EEG: PEDOT-Leather Sensors for Comfortable Sleep Monitoring and Auditory Intervention

Siyuan Cheng,Le Chen,Tong Gu,Boyu Qiu,Zaifeng Pan,Wenhan Li,Jingyu Zhu,Ruijie Xie,Jiansheng Wu,Fengwei Huo

Accurate sleep assessment relies on the high-quality, long-term acquisition of physiological signals. However, traditional polysomnography (PSG) relies on cumbersome equipment with poor user comfort and often interferes with the user’s sleep quality. Herein, a wearable in-ear EEG sleep monitoring and intervention platform is developed based on a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/leather composite electrode. By leveraging the relatively enclosed and stable environment of the ear canal, this platform achieves an optimal balance between long-term comfort and signal accuracy. The PEDOT/leather electrode demonstrates robust electrical stability, low interfacial impedance, and high mechanical durability. Benefiting from the anatomical proximity to the central nervous system, the platform enables precise EEG acquisition and sleep stage classification (Wake, NREM, REM). Moreover, active sleep modulation is realized through integrated closed-loop acoustic stimulation. This integrated sensing-and-intervention platform offers a highly promising solution for next-generation personalized sleep medicine and neurological disease management.

Integration of manganese oxide into a 3D PEDOT/polyurethane conductive matrix for flexible supercapacitors

Wei Manlin,Sun Zuliang,Huang Chongao,Shen Xiaojuan

Manganese oxides (MnO x ) represent a highly promising class of electroactive materials for supercapacitor applications. Nevertheless, their practical performance is frequently constrained by low electrical conductivity and a limited interfacial surface area. Integrating MnO x with highly conductive materials onto porous conductive scaffolds presents an effective strategy to circumvent these limitations. In this work, a self-supported electrode was prepared by incorporating MnO x within a three-dimensional (3D) polymeric matrix composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polyurethane (PU) doped with carbon black via a facile solution-based method. Benefiting from the high pseudo-capacitance of MnO x , the outstanding mechanical flexibility of the polymer matrix, and their synergistic interaction including robust interfacial adhesion, rapid charge transfer, and efficient ion diffusion, the resultant electrode exhibited a high areal capacitance (Ca) of 373.1 mF cm − 2 (~ 310.9 F g − 1 ) at 1 mA cm − 2 . When integrated into a solid flexible symmetric device, it achieved a remarkable specific capacitance of 116.4 mF cm − 2 at 1 mA cm − 2 and delivered an excellent energy density of 0.013 mWh cm − 2 (at a power density of 0.45 mW cm − 2 ). This study is expected to provide valuable insights for designing high-performance flexible supercapacitors (SCs) by integrating MnO x into highly conductive 3D polymer frameworks via a simple, cost-effective approach. Graphical abstract A self-supporting 3D porous polymeric matrix of PBUE, composed of PEDOT and polyurethane doped with carbon black, was fabricated as a supportive electrode framework. Due to its porous architecture, MnO x can be uniformly grown within PBUE, while PEDOT:PSS can fully infiltrate the composite structure, thereby forming a high-performance supercapacitor electrode. Conductive nanofiltration membranes via in situ PEDOT-polymerization for electro-assisted membrane fouling mitigation

Tian-Zhi Jia,Ru Feng,Chun Cui,Qian Chen,Levente Cseri,Rong-Fei Zhou,Gyorgy Szekely,Xue-Li Cao,Shi-Peng Sun

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes play a pivotal role in water treatment; however, the persistent challenge of membrane fouling hampers their stable application. This study introduces a novel approach to address this issue through the creation of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based conductive membrane, achieved by synergistically coupling interfacial polymerization (IP) with in situ self-polymerization of EDOT. During the IP reaction, the concurrent generation of HCl triggers the protonation of EDOT, activating its self-polymerization into PEDOT. This interwoven structure integrates with the polyamide network to establish a stable selective layer, yielding a remarkable 90 % increase in permeability to 20.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Leveraging the conductivity conferred by PEDOT doping, an electro-assisted cleaning strategy is devised, rapidly restoring the flux to 98.3 % within 5 min, outperforming the 30-minute pure water cleaning approach. Through simulations in an 8040 spiral-wound module and the utilization of the permeated salt solution for cleaning, the electro-assisted cleaning strategy emerges as an eco-friendly solution, significantly reducing water consumption and incurring only a marginal electricity cost of 0.055 $ per day. This work presents an innovative avenue for constructing conductive membranes and introduces an efficient and cost-effective electro-assisted cleaning strategy to effectively combat membrane fouling.

A flexible humidity sensor based on GO/PEDOT: PSS modified laser-induced graphene electrode

Yang Song,Ronghui Dan,Lei Li,Xiaojuan Xia,Jiang Zhao,Rongqing Xu

The potential of ubiquitous humidity monitoring is unlocked through the presentation of a novel, highly flexible sensor, which is fabricated using a dramatically simplified and cost-effective method, challenging existing complex manufacturing approaches. Specifically, this study utilizes a laser direct writing technique that is both efficient and rapid for the fabrication of flexible laser-induced graphene (LIG) interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). By skillfully integrating graphene oxide (GO) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS), a flexible GO/PEDOT: PSS@LIG humidity sensor has been successfully developed. This sensor cleverly harnesses the distinctive properties of both PEDOT: PSS and GO, giving rise to a noteworthy synergistic effect that greatly boosts the humidity sensing capabilities of the GO/PEDOT: PSS composite. The sensor demonstrates a capacitive sensitivity of 1493561.67 μF/% RH spanning from 11 % to 97 % RH. Furthermore, it exhibits exceptional response and recovery times (5 and 16.5 s, respectively), along with commendable stability. These features guarantee efficient and precise real-time monitoring. Such remarkable sensing attributes position the flexible GO/PEDOT: PSS@LIG humidity sensor as a highly promising candidate for deployment in non-contact sensing domains, including environmental and respiratory monitoring.
