The two-step method generates abundant unsaturated metal active sites on ZIF-8. • Multi-active-site MOF promotes block-region formation, increasing contact area. • CSE exhibits conductivity of 9.62 × 10 −5 S cm −1 (30 °C) and 5.52 × 10 −4 S cm −1 (60 °C). • The mechanisms involved in enhancing ionic conductivity of ACoZ-PEO is explained. In this study, annealed Co-ZIF-8 with the two-step method of Co doping and annealing was prepared, and then it was incorporated into PEO to fabricate composite solid electrolytes (CSEs). It is found that in Co-doped ZIF-8 annealed at 300 °C for 2 h the doping reduces the binding energy of the Zn N coordination bond in ZIF-8. This promotes the breaking of Zn N bonds during subsequent annealing, and thus exposes a large number of unsaturated metal active sites. The mechanisms involved in the interaction between annealed Co -doped ZIF-8 and lithium salt-containing polyethylene oxide have been discussed detailly. These active sites interact with the ether oxygen atoms of PEO and the anions of the lithium salt, inhibiting crystallization, enhancing ionic conductivity, and promoting the formation of block-like regions, thereby increasing the effective contact area between the electrolyte and the interfaces of electrodes. The ionic conductivity of this composite electrolyte increases to 5.52 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 60 °C, and the Li + transference number rises to 0.36. The corresponding lithium symmetric battery can stably operate for over 700 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . The initial discharge specific capacity of lithium iron phosphate battery at 60 °C and 0.5C is 158 mAh g −1 , and the capacity retention rate after 125 cycles is 92.5%.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state batteries but are typically limited to elevated temperatures due to PEO crystallinity and strong Li⁺–EO coordination. Here, we report a homogeneous PEO–LiTFSI electrolyte incorporating optimized Li3InCl6 that suppresses PEO crystallization, weakens Li⁺–TFSI⁻ coordination, and enhances Li-ion transport after acetonitrile solvent removal. This effect originates from the structural collapse of Li3InCl6 in acetonitrile, which exposes In3⁺ sites that preferentially adsorb TFSI⁻ anions, thereby disrupting the regular arrangement of PEO chains and inducing amorphization. In contrast to other oxide-based inorganic fillers, our results also found that the interface between PEO and Li3InCl6 enables efficient Li-ion transport. The resulting electrolyte achieves a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.13×10⁻4 S cm-1 and excellent cycling stability with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode, retaining 74 % capacity after 100 cycles at 0.3 C and 25 oC. To confirm the generality of this strategy and mechanism, we extended it to InCl3 and GaCl3 fillers, which similarly promoted amorphization in PEO–LiTFSI electrolytes. This work provides a general strategy to design amorphous polymer electrolytes for high-voltage solid-state batteries operating at room temperature.

For enhancing the storability and quality of postharvest fresh products, an electrospun nanofiber membrane composed of polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), perilla essential oil (PEO) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) (ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL) was developed for active food packaging. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL electrospun fibers integration were continuous nanofibers with ZIF-8 nanoparticles affixed to their surface and 759.1 nm average diameter. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL nanofiber membranes had improved tensile strength of 14.35 MPa and anti-deformation capability of 9.33 MPa and reduced thermal stability compared with PEO/PLA/PCL. The adhesion of ZIF-8 nanoparticles maintained the nanofiber surface hydrophobicity and improved the water vapor barrier quality of 0.21 g mm/m 2 h. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL nanofiber membrane showed excellent antibacterial ability within 24 h test and biosafety confirmed by the zebrafish co-culture experiments. The storage test revealed that the ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL membrane delayed the postharvest quality degradation of blueberry fruits to extend their shelf-life to 28 days by maintaining firmness, color, and nutritional quality. These results indicated that the nanofiber membrane has significant potential for fruit preservation as functional packaging material.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolytes have attracted significant attention due to their high ionic conductivity, low expansion, and excellent compatibility with lithium-metal anodes. However, their oxidative stability is typically limited to below 3.9 V. This study addresses this limitation by forming a stable cathode–electrolyte interphase at the interface between the cathode and PEO-based composite polymer electrolyte (CPE), facilitated by the decomposition of the functional additive LiPO2F2 during cycling. Additionally, the incorporation of ethylene carbonate as a plasticizer significantly enhances the ionic conductivity. The parasitic reactions and lithium dendrite growth are effectively suppressed at the anode interface, allowing the Li/CPE/Li cell to achieve an outstanding lifespan of 2000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the oxidation voltage of the CPE reaches up to 4.82 V. The LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2/CPE/Li cell demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 138.1 mAh g–1 at a cutoff voltage of 4.2 V, maintaining an impressive capacity retention rate of 89.2% after 140 cycles.

This study is aimed at the enhancement of the corrosion and tribocorrosion performance of AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloys after plasma electrolytic oxidization (PEO) treatment. Some PEO-treated Mg samples were coated with chitosan (CS) film by dip-coated method, while others were subjected to hydrothermal treatment (HT) followed by CS film. The microstructure and chemical composition of coatings were investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . Corrosion resistance of the specimens was evaluated via electrochemical measurements (open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) in simulated body fluid. The tribocorrosion performance was determined by simultaneously recording the variation of the friction coefficient and the open circuit potential with the sliding time. The results indicated that better corrosion and tribocorrosion performance were observed when CS layer is applied on hydrothermally treated PEO samples than on the bare PEO samples. Thus, fabrication of hydrothermally treated PEO surface coatings with chitosan is a significant approach to protect the Mg from corrosion and tribocorrosion, thereby increasing the potential application of Mg alloy as biological implants .

Organic-inorganic composite solid state electrolytes (SSEs), as one of the most attractive candidates for next generation SSEs, combines the both advantages of flexibility (from organic polymer) and structure rigidity (from robust inorganic constituent). In this work, a high performance three-dimensional (3D) crosslinked electrolyte with polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrices is further modified by dispersing submicron fast ion conductor Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP). The optimal 3D composite SSE PVDF@10PEO-5LATP-5LiPF 6 (PPLL) shows high ionic conductivities of 5.24 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C and above 10 −3 S cm −1 at 50 °C. Galvanostatic cycling test demonstrates that PPLL contributes to electrochemical performances, with high capacity retention of 93.95% after 500 cycles for LiFePO 4 cathode. Further investigations indicate its more benefits including excellent flexibility and superior safety. Intensive explorations imply that the interaction between dual-matrix degrades the respective crystallization through generating weak bonding, and the recombination with LATP further enhances ionic conductivity as well as structural stability of composite electrolyte via strengthening interface reaction, and reducing the organic crystallinity. This composite SSE with high conductivity and stability may be applied in next generation energy storage devices, particularly in all-solid-state secondary batteries.

In the field of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs), constructing vertically heterostructured poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolytes is an effective method to realize their tight contact with cathodes and Li anodes at the same time. Succinonitrile (SN) has been widely used in PEO-based solid electrolytes to improve the interface contact with cathodes, enhance the ionic conductivities, and obtain a high electrochemical stability window of PEO, but its application is still hindered by its intrinsic instability to Li anodes, which results in corrosion and side interactions with lithium metal. Herein, the cellulose membrane (CM) is introduced creatively into the vertically heterostructured PEO-based solid electrolytes to match the PEO-SN solid electrolytes at the cathode side. With the advantage of the interaction between −OH groups of CM and −C≡N groups in SN, the movement of free SN molecules from cathodes to Li anodes is limited effectively, resulting in a stable and durable SEI layer. In specific, the Li||LiFePO4 battery with the CM-assisted vertically heterostructured PEO-based solid electrolyte by in situ preparation delivers a discharge capacity of around 130 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles and capacity retention of 95% after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. Our work provides a solution to construct PEO-based solid electrolytes feasible to match cathodes and Li anodes effectively by intimate contact with electrodes.

Functionalized separator is more competitive than commercial polyolefin separator for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we design the separator modified by a composite coating layer, which is composed of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithium bis(triuoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) (LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI, LLZTO-PPL). The LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer gives an impressive effect on dendrite inhibition of lithium metal. In comparison with commercial polyolefin separator, smaller overpotential value and better Coulombic efficiency are observed for the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Li symmetric cells and the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Cu asymmetric cells at various current densities of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer modified separator exhibits better high-rate capability and cycle performance for these cells assembled with different kinds of cathode materials (LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and their counterpart of a lithium metal anode. The functionalized composite coating layer modified separator may be a more attractive candidate material for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

To overcome the safety hazard of the liquid electrolytes used in traditional lithium batteries, solid electrolytes have drawn more attention because of their advantages such as non-volatility, easy processing, good mechanical properties, and stability. In this paper, sodium alginate (SA) nanofiber membranes were used as the backbone of PEO-based solid electrolytes. SA nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning with assistance from PEO and cross-linked with calcium ions to construct a nanofiber network skeleton, which provided a guarantee for the stability of the subsequent electrolyte preparation process. The effects of spinning conditions and crosslinking time on the structure and performances of the nanofiber membranes were investigated. Meanwhile, the relationship between the skeleton of nanofiber membranes cross-linked with calcium ions and ion conductivity was investigated. The optimal parameters of the electrospinning process including concentration, voltage, distance, and SA content were discussed, and the fiber diameter and its distribution were analyzed. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, thermal gravimetric analyzer analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) maps were used to characterize the nanofiber membranes and electrolytes. The results showed that the thermal performance of cross-linked nanofiber membranes improved and the crystallinity of the PEO matrix decreased. The ion conductivity of the electrolytes was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) testing, and the results showed that the assembled lithium symmetric battery had a good ion conductivity of 6.82 × 10−5S/cm at 30 °C.

In the polyoxyethylene (PEO)-based solid-state electrolytes, the low ionic conductivity of lithium ions limits its application in solid-state lithium batteries, so optimizing the conduction path of lithium ions is beneficial to improve the ionic conductivity. In this work, we report the use of hydrothermal carbon nano-sphere (HCS) modified glass fibers (GF) as a functional filler (GF@HCS) to improve the ionic conductivity of PEO composite solid-state electrolytes. The oxygen atoms in the hydroxyl groups on the surface of HCS can be complexed with Li ions as its transport sites, which means that it can promote the long-distance transport of Li ions along the glass fiber surface. With addition of 2 wt% GF@HCS fillers, the degree of crystallinity of PEO composite solid-state electrolyte is the smallest, and the ionic conductivity is significantly increased from 8.9 × 10 –5 to 4.4 × 10 –4 S·cm −1 at 60 °C. Moreover, the PEO composite solid-state electrolyte exhibits better lithium–metal interface stability in symmetric lithium batteries and superior rate performance in LiFePO 4 solid-state batteries. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymeric solid electrolytes (PSEs) hold great promise for all-solid-state lithium batteries, but the intrinsic low mechanical strength of PEO limits their practical application and scale production. Herein, PSEs consisting of PEO and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (LiTFSI) supported on poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon) nanofiber matrix (nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs) are designed and prepared in situ on the Al, Cu foils, and the LiFePO 4 electrodes through coaxially electrospinning at 45 °C. The nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs show nonporous morphology due to in situ melting of the PEO/LiTFSI shell. The mechanical strength of the nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSE can reach to 3.32 and 2.44 MPa at 25 and 60 °C, respectively, which is stronger than that of the pure PEO membrane or the PSEs prepared via conventional solution casting. The nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs also show tight interfacial contact with LiFePO 4 electrode, resulting in small charge transfer resistance of 376 Ω, and thus afford the LiFePO 4 half coin cells with long charge/discharge cycling stability.

Solution-processed organic–inorganic halide lead perovskites have attracted increasing attention due to their great potential in low-cost, effective, and versatile light emission applications and large-scale portable optoelectronic devices. In this paper, formamidinium lead tribromide perovskite thin films composited with polyethylene oxide (PEO) were fabricated by a solution processing method. Great enhancement of photoluminescence was observed and more attractively, two-photon-pumped random lasing action could be achieved at room temperature when pumped by a nanosecond pulse laser with excitation wavelength centered at 1064 nm. Evident transition from spontaneous upconversion emission to random lasing action was investigated by monitoring the log–log light emission slope and peak width at half height. The lasing threshold is at around 1.1 mJ cm−2, which is comparable to that of other two-photon upconversion random lasers. The efficient random lasing emission originates from the multiple random scattering provided by the micrometer-scale rugged morphology and polycrystalline grain boundaries. Compared with conventional lasers that normally serve as a coherent light source, the perovskite random lasers show promise in fabricating low-cost thin-film lasing devices for flexible and speckle-free imaging applications.
