BACKGROUND Parametarhizium , a phylogenetically and morphologically distinct genus in Clavicipitaceae erected in 2021, represents an emerging model for multifunctional ecology (root colonizers, entomopathogens and saprophytes) in hypocrealean fungi. RESULT This study presents the first genomic characterization of Parametarhizium species ( P. changbaiense and P. hingganense ) and their beneficial effects on common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ), specifically addressing growth promotion and biocontrol potential. Comparative genomics revealed distinctive traits including compacted genomes, elevated GC content, expanded CAZymes (carbohydrate-active enzymes) and GPCRs (G-protein coupled receptors). Notably, significant expansions in key glycoside hydrolase families (GH6, GH7, GH13, GH16, GH18) underpin adaptations for plant colonization, insect pathogenesis, and saprophytic nutrition. Functionally, both species enhanced the growth of common bean through root symbiosis, with P. changbaiense exhibiting biocontrol activity against Rhizoctonia solani . CONCLUSION These findings establish Parametarhizium not only as a novel clade in Clavicipitaceae with unique genomic signatures, but also as a promising candidate for developing multifunctional biocontrol agents and biofertilizers. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Plant-derived pesticides (PDPs) are increasingly promoted as ‘eco-friendly’ alternatives to agrochemicals because of their low vertebrate toxicity, yet their safety for non-target arthropod natural enemies is rarely tested, especially the enrichment effect via trophic transfer. RESULTS We cultured fruit flies using media supplemented with two widely applied Chinese PDPs in tea plantations, matrine or azadirachtin, under commercial concentration, which were fed to newly emerged spiderlings of wolf spider Pardosa laura (Araneae: Lycosidae) throughout their entire life cycle. We examined the effect of these two PDPs on their survival, developmental parameters and reproduction. The results showed that developmental traits remained unaffected, but both PDPs markedly suppressed male mating success and female fecundity. Histological examination of paraffin sections revealed markedly impaired ovarian maturation. Microbiome profiling indicated that pesticide exposure disrupted ovarian microbial communities, with azadirachtin exerting the strongest effect, whereas gut and testicular communities remained largely unchanged. Transcriptomic analysis of ovaries showed significant enrichment of pathways related to ovarian development. Ten representative differentially expressed genes (DEGs) within these pathways were selected and validated by RT-qPCR. CONCLUSION PDPs may not compromise the development of spiders in the first generation, yet they can severely affect reproduction of the spiders, thereby precipitating substantial declines in population size of future generations. This result challenges the conventional wisdom of botanical pesticides, inspiring re-consideration of their rational use in integrated pest management. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Soybean production is severely affected by the soil-borne phytopathogenic, Fusarium oxysporum , which causes root rot disease. Artificial nanoplatforms have attracted attention as a sustainable strategy to promote crop growth and protection. RESULTS In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) loaded with lipopeptide (Lip), referred to as Lip@MSNs, were synthesized with a diameter of approximately 50 nm and a Lip loading capacity of 22.40 wt%. Lip@MSNs demonstrated potent antifungal activity against F. oxysporum , inducing cell membrane disruption, permeability alterations, nuclear damage, and subsequent cell death. Pot experiment showed that Lip@MSNs significantly reduced the severity of soybean root rot disease by 43.10% while enhancing plant growth and root development. Metabolomic analysis revealed that Lip@MSNs modulated critical metabolic pathways, including zeatin and pyrimidine metabolic pathways in roots. Furthermore, Lip@MSNs recruited beneficial endophytic bacteria, such as antagonistic genera ( Sphingomonas , Variovorax , and Streptomyces ) and growth-promoting genera ( Rhizobium , Ensifer , and Nocardioides ). Correlation analysis highlighted the role of these bacteria in nitrogen fixation and phytohormone production (e.g., trans -zeatin), contributing to reduced root rot disease severity and improved plant health. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate that the silicon-based delivery system could serve as an effectively tool to control soil-borne phytopathogenic diseases and promote the development of sustainable agriculture. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Fluazinam is a broad-spectrum fungicide and acaricide, but its field performance is limited by temperature sensitivity and phytotoxicity. To overcome these challenges, a thermoresponsive nano-formulation (Flu@TRNP) was developed by encapsulating fluazinam in a poly( N -isopropylacrylamide–styrene) copolymer matrix via emulsion polymerization. RESULTS The microcapsules exhibited uniform spherical morphology (mean diameter: 3.4 μm), high encapsulation efficiency (75.3%), and temperature-dependent release governed by the polymer lower critical solution temperature (~32 °C). Below this temperature, release was almost complete, whereas above it, polymer shrinkage slowed diffusion and enabled sustained release. Flu@TRNP displayed significantly lower contact angles on leaf surfaces compared with commercial fluazinam, indicating improved wettability. Bioassays showed enhanced acaricidal activity against Tetranychus urticae , with median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) values reduced by up to 25% at 35 °C. Antifungal tests against Phytophthora infestans confirmed greater inhibition at 20 °C. Field trials demonstrated comparable or superior disease control efficacy at reduced or standard doses. Pot experiments under heat stress (40 °C) indicated lower phytotoxicity on cowpea and potato compared with the commercial formulation. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that the thermoresponsive microcapsule formulation improves bioefficacy and crop safety while reducing the risk of phytotoxicity under fluctuating environmental conditions. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Pesticides in agriculture have played an important role and are irreplaceable in increasing the yield of crops and agricultural products. However, ultraviolet photodegradation is a crucial factor that leads to the inefficient usage of most traditional pesticides under sunlight. Rotenone (Rot), as a plant-derived insecticide, is easily degraded under ultraviolet light with loss of biological activity, which severely limits its wide application in the fields. It is therefore necessary to create new formulations to prevent the photodegradation of Rot under ultraviolet radiation. RESULTS Simple, intelligent, and degradable Rot@Fe III -tannic acid (Rot@Fe III -TA) nanocapsules were constructed using a general strategy, where Rot was coated in the core and Fe III -TA networks as the shell prepared via in situ coordination assembly on the interface of oil/water microemulsions. The prepared nanocapsules showed multidimensional stimuli-responsive controlled release performance, containing acidic/alkaline pH, glutathione, H 2 O 2 , and phosphate, which were closely relevant to the physiological environments of crops, and the Fe III -TA shell was finally disassembled in crops against bioaccumulation. Furthermore, the prepared nanocapsules showed remarkable rain washing and UV photolysis resistance on wheat leaf surface for availably wheat aphid control compared with that of technical Rot. In addition, the prepared nanocapsules appeared good safety on seed germination and seedling emergence, and were beneficial for the growth of wheat seedlings. CONCLUSION The prepared Rot@Fe III -TA nanocapsules could effectively prevent the photodegradation of Rot under ultraviolet radiation for wheat aphid control, which has potential application for Rot formulation exploitation in the field in the future. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The rhizosphere and root endosphere harbor microbial communities with weed-suppressive potential. Cyperus rotundus , a highly invasive weed, may leverage such fungi to inhibit neighboring plants. This study aimed to isolate fungal strains from Cyperus rotundus and evaluate their activity against the problematic weed Eleusine indica , with emphasis on mechanisms involving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hormonal regulation. RESULTS Among fungal isolates from Cyperus rotundus , 120 strains inhibited E. indica germination, and four isolates ( Fusarium oxysporum Wg306, Fusarium andiyazi Fg611, Trichoderma afroharzianum Zg603, and Penicillium raperi Ct105) completely suppressed germination. These fungi markedly affected endogenous hormones in E. indica , most notably a 2934.29% increase in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) under strain Zg603. The other three strains significantly reduced gibberellin acid 3 (GA 3 ) by 46.16–78.58%, decreased cis -zeatin (cZ) by 33.42–68.33%, and elevated abscisic acid (ABA) by 6.37–28.43%. Solid-state fermentation products using agricultural residues (leaves of Cyperus rotundus and sugarcane, rice husks, and rice straw) significantly suppressed E. indica germination, with rice straw showing the strongest effect. Fungal VOCs, including methyl linoleate, β-elemene, and 3-octanone, inhibited E. indica shoot and root elongation in vitro , with β - elemene exhibiting the strongest activity (55.31% shoot and 49.64% root inhibition), while causing no inhibition to Oryza sativ a at ≤ 1000 μ M . CONCLUSION This study pioneers four fungal strains from Cyperus rotundus as candidate bioherbicides, suppressing E. indica via VOCs phytotoxicity and hormonal disruption, and finds a novel ecological strategy in which Cyperus rotundus may employ associated fungi to suppress competitors. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Rice sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani ( R. solani) poses a significant threat to global rice production. Although prochloraz (PRO) is an effective fungicide, its poor photostability and low water solubility severely limit its field performance. We developed a sustainable, stimuli-responsive delivery system to enhance PRO efficacy and minimize environmental risks. RESULTS Multilayered mesoporous nanoparticles (MSN@PMO) were synthesized via a hard-template route and converted into hollow periodic mesoporous organosilicas (H-PMO) by sodium carbonate etching. PRO was encapsulated in H-PMO and sealed with pectin, yielding a dual pH/pectinase responsive formulation (Pec@PRO-H-PMO, PPHP). PPHP exhibited sustained release for 144 h under acidic and enzymatic conditions, and showed markedly improved photostability, foliar adhesion and rainfastness compared with PRO technical concentrate (PRO TC) and PRO water emulsion (PRO EW). Bioassays demonstrated that PPHP exhibited 1.8 times greater antifungal activity against R. solani compared to PRO TC. Ecotoxicological analysis revealed 11.9 times higher zebrafish median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) values than PRO TC over 80% viability of human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells at 18.4 mg/L, suggesting improved biosafety. CONCLUSIONS The dual pH/pectinase triggered release of PPHP enhanced pesticide utilization and improved safety. This strategy presents a novel approach for developing stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery systems, aiming to strengthen crop disease control efficiency and mitigate environmental risks. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Rice blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae , poses a formidable threat to global rice production. Given that chemical fungicides, one of the important methods used to control rice blast, cause harm to the environment and human health, sustainable alternatives are required. This study aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antifungal activities against P. oryzae using mangrove soil bacteria, and to evaluate their ecotoxicity. RESULTS In this study, AgNPs were synthesized using fermentation extracts from Pseudomonas aeruginosa R64. The resulting nanoparticles (RFE-AgNPs), ranging in size from 4.516 to 37.031 nm, were characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. RFE-AgNPs at 20 μg mL −1 had strong antifungal activity against P. oryzae , inhibiting colony growth by 77%. Moreover, RFE-AgNPs significantly hindered conidial germination, germ tube elongation and appressorium formation. In addition, microscopic observation revealed that RFE-AgNPs treatment disrupted mycelial morphology, lipid and glycogen metabolism and the cAMP signaling pathway of P. oryzae , limiting its infection and expansion in host tissues. A pathogenicity test confirmed that RFE-AgNPs significantly reduced disease development in barley and rice leaves. Importantly, RFE-AgNPs displayed significantly lower toxicity to Artemia salina compared with isoprothiolane and commercial AgNPs. CONCLUSION RFE-AgNPs synthesized using mangrove soil bacterial natural products displayed good control efficacy on rice blast but low ecotoxicity on A. salina and had great potential to be a promising candidate for eco-friendly biopesticides to manage rice blast disease. © 2025 The Author(s). BACKGROUND Additives are essential components to maintain the stability of pesticide formulations, ensuring effectiveness and safety in field application. Nevertheless, numerous additives in pesticide formulations are a severe threat to the ecological environment. RESULTS Herein, an amphiphilic polymer C 18 -modified poly (acrylic acid) (P(AA/C 18 )) with biocompatibility was synthesized by modification of poly (acrylic acid) in the presence of octadecylamine to elaborate pyraclostrobin (PYR) emulsion. The effects of the preparation process and loading content on the stability of emulsion using P(AA/C 18 ) were systematically investigated compared with five commercial surfactants. The results showed that 20% PYR could be stably loaded by only 1% P(AA/C 18 ), which provided a feasible method for industrial development while mitigating the effects on the environment. The possible mechanism of stability was verified by a series of means, such as cryogenic scanning electron microscopy, and inspired by Stokes law and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory that electrical double layer and interfacial film with toughness and strength at the oil–water interface could form by the unique chemical structure of P(AA/C 18 ), preventing Ostwald ripening and coalescence. More interesting, the stability of the emulsion could be regulated regarding tunable rheological properties driven with concentrations including P(AA/C 18 ) and PYR in formulation. Moreover, the enhancement of photodegradation stability and an increase in zebrafish safety were proved. CONCLUSION This simple technology is effective to develop pesticide formulations satisfying high stability while mitigating adverse effects on environment, and P(AA/C 18 ) would be a promising polymeric carrier for the highly efficient delivery of pesticides. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The red-haired bark beetle (RHB), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), is a significant invasive pest responsible for widespread mortality in pine forests. Current control methods are largely ineffective and poorly integrated, failing to halt the spread of RHB. This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated management system that leverages the beetle's behavioral patterns and implements stratified management strategies based on the severity of infestation levels. RESULTS We first enhanced trapping efficiency by optimizing key technologies, including trap design, deployment methods, and lure formulations. Building on this foundation, we developed a stratified management plan with the following key measures: in newly colonized stands, a strategy combining benzyl alcohol repellents and optimized lure attractants, along with flight-interception traps, significantly reduced spread, decreasing the proportion of dead trees from 12.5% to 2.6%. In outbreak stands, intensive measures such as stump removal and mass trapping reduced the RHB population density by 99.05%. Additionally, replanting alters stand volatiles, reducing their attractiveness to the beetles. CONCLUSION The stratified management strategy, applied to both newly colonized and outbreak stands of RHB, proved highly effective in suppressing population growth and preventing further dispersal. This approach offers a key technical solution for restoring damaged coastal ecosystems and provides a valuable reference for managing similar invasive pests worldwide. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Root-knot nematodes ( Meloidogyne incognita ) pose a persistent threat to global agriculture. The widespread use of chemical nematicides for their controlling has raised environmental safety and human health concerns, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Asarum sieboldii , a medicinal plant with documented bioactive properties, is a potential source of eco-friendly biocontrol agents. In this study, the nematicidal efficacy of A. sieboldii root volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against M. incognita was evaluated, and the mechanisms underlying the reduction in the number of root galls and egg masses by VOCs was elucidated. RESULTS VOCs from A. siebedii roots exhibited significant nematicidal activity, causing 76.31% and 96.89% mortality of second-stage M. incognita juveniles after 24 and 48 h, respectively, and effectively inhibited egg hatching by 72.94%. Activated carbon adsorption experiments confirmed VOCs as the primary bioactive agents. VOCs reduced the number of root galls and egg masses in tomato. We identified and screened three effective VOCs, namely 3,5-dimethoxytoluene, 4-methoxyacetophenone and β-pinene, that exhibited direct-contact and fumigant activity, and outperformed the commercial nematicide dazomet, reducing root galls on tomato by 65.5%, 55.3% and 44.4%, respectively, while enhancing the growth. These compounds triggered the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in nematodes, leading to oxidative stress and concurrent inhibition of peroxidase and catalase activities. CONCLUSIONS Three compounds from A. sieboldii exhibited fumigant activity against M. incognita and promoted tomato growth, highlighting their dual advantage over traditional chemical nematicides. These findings should contribute to the development of plant-based, environmentally-friendly strategies for integrated pest management. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Synthetic insecticides have been widely used for pest control but cause environmental issues such as pesticide residues, soil contamination, and resistance. As a result, there is a need for eco-friendly alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) are renewable, biodegradable, and non-persistent, making them promising candidates for natural insecticides. This study explores the potential of essential oils from the heartwood of Taiwania flousiana Gaussen, sourced from Tengchong, Yunnan. RESULTS The chemical composition of T. flousiana essential oils was analyzed, displaying their diversity of chemical composition. Assessment of insecticidal activity against various pests revealed their broad-spectrum insecticidal activity. Afterwards we assessed their biochemical effects on Armigeres subalbatus , measuring esterase- α , esterase- β , SOD, LPO, and GST levels. Toxicity to non-target organisms, including Nicotiana tabacum , Danio rerio , and Apis mellifera , was also evaluated. Computational simulations identified four key bioactive compounds, with two dominant compounds isolated and characterized, laying the foundation for further studies. CONCLUSION EOs of T. flousiana exhibit a broad spectrum of insecticidal activity, coupled with a remarkably low impact on non-target organisms. This suggests they could serve as an eco-friendly substitute for synthetic insecticides. This finding is significant for developing greener pest control strategies. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.
