Superhydrophobic through-pore PI/PTFE aerogels enable high-temperature W/O emulsion separation

Kaixuan Sun,Yumin Sun,Huanru Wang,Pu Zhang,Yanyang Wang,Xutong Han,Xiongfei Du,Qinglin Huang

We report a freeze-templated, through-pore PI/PTFE aerogel that integrates a PTFE-impregnated superhydrophobic interface (water contact angle ≈ 156°) with an open, percolating architecture engineered for hot W/O emulsion separation. Under a modest driving pressure (ΔP = 0.02 MPa), the aerogel delivers high oil fluxes and > 99.5 % separation efficiency across a broad operating window (25–90 °C, pH 1–14). At 90 °C, fluxes exceed 3800 LMH (soybean-oil emulsions) and 1360 LMH (vacuum-pump-oil emulsions) while maintaining ≥ 99.5 % rejection; 30-cycle tests confirm durability with ethanol-rinse regeneration and minimal performance drift. The aerogel’s low thermal conductivity (≈ 0.048–0.074 W·m −1 ·K −1 ) additionally mitigates heat loss during hot-emulsion processing. These results demonstrate a scalable route to high-throughput, chemically and thermally robust W/O emulsion remediation.

Durable superamphiphobic aramid fabrics modified by PTFE and FAS for chemical protective clothing

Tasixiang Yeerken,Weidong Yu,Jianghan Feng,Qi Xia,Hongling Liu

A robust, superamphiphobic, and self-cleaning fabric was obtained through a two-step coating method using polytetrafluoroethylene micro particles and fluorinated alkyl silanes on aramid fabrics. The superamphiphobic and repellent properties were obtained from the treated aramid fabrics, as evidenced by the high contact angles with water, oil, and acid/base droplets (> 150°) and the corresponding low rolling angles (< 5°) for water. By scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, we observed that roughness structures were formed by polytetrafluoroethylene micro particles and fluorinated alkyl silanes, which significantly enhanced the superamphiphobicity and durability. No penetration was observed in the coated fabrics after staining with H 2 SO 4 (40%) and NaOH (40%) for up to 180 min. There was no apparent change in the weight-loss rate after immersion in general acids and alkalis for 100 h. In addition, the coated fabric could withstand at least 200 cycles of abrasion and 10 cycles of washing without apparent change in its superamphiphobicity. The simple but effective coating may be useful for the development of personal protection textiles for emergency rescue applications.

Degradation Mechanisms and Intelligent Recognition of PTFE Triboelectric Performance under Hygrothermal Cycling Environment

Longkui Zheng,Yang Xiang,Dawei Zheng,Ning Luo

In this study, we systematically investigate the triboelectric performance degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) under high–low temperature cycling and humidity variations, a critical yet underexplored challenge in extreme environmental applications. Under accelerated aging conditions spanning 0–300 thermal cycles and 0–90% RH, PTFE films demonstrated progressively worsening electrical output, their short-circuit current declining steadily from 7.2 to 4.6 μA, alongside an open-circuit voltage drop from 400 to 240 V. Surface characterization via scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that thermal cycling induces microstructural defects and chemical oxidation, where oxygen content replaced C–F bonds with weaker electron-accepting groups (C–O, C═O). This oxidative degradation reduced PTFE’s electron affinity and directly impaired charge transfer efficiency in TENGs. To address performance unpredictability, an improved extreme learning machine algorithm is developed, achieving 100% accuracy in real-time classification of PTFE aging states by analyzing triboelectric signals. Furthermore, paired with pristine PTFE, aged PTFE modified surface states enable a 21.8-fold power output enhancement and outperform conventional configurations. These findings establish a mechanistic framework linking thermal-humidity aging to triboelectric decay while proposing machine-learning-driven predictive maintenance strategies for TENGs in aerospace, energy systems, and autonomous devices operating in harsh environments.

Surfactant modified PTFE-based forward osmosis membrane with high performance and superior stability

Wenpei Ye,Lijun Meng,Ruizhe Wang,Mengying Yan,Fan Yu,Yinzhou Bao,Haoyu Xing,Jun Li,Niğmet UZAL,Manhong Huang

The absence of membranes with high stability and excellent permeation performance hinders the progress of forward osmosis (FO) technology. In this work, a high-strength polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate was used for interfacial polymerization (IP) to fabricate FO membranes. The innovative approach enhances membrane performance by improving hydrophilicity with surfactant modification to facilitate better water transport in FO. Dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was added into the   aqueous phase to control the IP process, and the optimized DTAB concentration was determined to be 70 mg L −1 , which was   labeled as PTFE-DTAB 70 membrane. Characterization analysis showed that DTAB stabilized carboxyl groups in the PA layer through electrostatic interactions, inhibiting amide bond hydrolysis. After immersed for 60 days under extreme pH conditions (1–13), the membrane maintained high water flux (>16 LMH) and low reverse salt flux (<0.56 g L −1 ). Its chemical stability significantly surpassed that of commercial CTA membrane, with a 295 % increase in water flux at pH 13. When treating simulated wastewater, a 99.9 % chromium (Cr) rejection and a 96 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) rejection were obtained. The membrane showed great potential for treating high-salinity, strong acid and alkaline industrial wastewater. This study provides an innovative strategy for developing highly stable FO membranes and reveals the universal mechanism of surfactant molecular design in membrane separation.

CO2 Desorption by Hydrophilic PTFE Hollow Fiber Membranes via a Membrane Flash Process

Peng Peng Lv,Feng Wang,Yu Hai Guo,Hong Yan Tang

In this study, hydrophilic PTFE hollow fiber membranes were prepared and applied for CO2 desorption via a membrane flash process, which is a new CO2 desorption process by utilizing waste thermal energy. The methyldiethanolamine was selected as the absorbent. Effects of the flashing temperature, flashing pressure, rich solution flow rate and MDEA concentration on CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux were deeply investigated. The results show that flashing temperature is positive to the CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux. However, the flashing pressure, rich solution flow rate and MDEA concentration are negative to the CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux.

Constructing nanofiltration membrane on hydrophobic PVDF and PTFE substrates via reverse interfacial polymerization

Yali Zhao,Yuan Liao,Can Li,Yurong Yin,Rong Wang,Yu Liu

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene   (PTFE) porous membranes are ideal substrates for preparing thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes with improved solvent resistance. However, it remains difficult to construct PA skin layers on PVDF and PTFE substrates via conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) due to the hydrophobic nature of these materials. To address this challenge, a reverse IP process was proposed to construct a defect-free PA skin layer on PVDF and PTFE substrates, in which the hydrophobic PVDF and PTFE substrates were soaked with the organic phase to ensure uniform coverage of reacted solution on the substrates. This novel strategy can effectively tackle the issue of uneven wetting of the aqueous phase on hydrophobic substrates in the conventional IP process. The resultant TFC membranes (i.e. M rev-PVDF and M rev-PTFE ) exhibit excellent nanofiltration (NF) performance in both aqueous and organic solutions. M rev-PVDF and M rev-PTFE have MgCl 2 rejections of 96.12% and 95.17%, alongside the water permeances of 12.8 LMH/bar and 11.2 LMH/bar, respectively (M rev-PTFE was activated with DMF). It is further shown that M rev-PVDF and M rev-PTFE could also reject 99.4% and 98.5% of Congo red in methanol solution at solvent permeances of over 3.3 LMH/bar, while they also perform excellently in other polar protic solvents. Consequently, this work opens a new window for constructing high-performance TFC PA membranes on hydrophobic substrates and expands the application of the TFC PA NF membrane.

Trivalent cerium-doped zinc phosphate composite coating: A novel solution to the wear-corrosion coupling issue

Qiwei Ma,Yanjun Ma,Dingjun Zhang,Jiaqi Yan,Lei Chen,Huidi Zhou,Jianmin Chen

A novel cerium-doped zinc phosphate (Ce-ZP) composite coating was developed to enhance corrosion resistance and tribological performance in marine environments. XRD, XPS, IR, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed successful cerium incorporation into the Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 lattice, while ESEM and EDS analyses demonstrated a uniform microstructure. The Ce-ZP composite, incorporated into an epoxy-phenolic-PTFE matrix, exhibited low friction, high wear resistance, and superior corrosion protection. Electrochemical studies revealed a synergistic effect between Ce 3+ and Zn 2+ , forming passivation films that prolonged the coating’s lifespan. Compared to traditional zinc phosphate inhibitors, Ce-ZP demonstrated faster activation, improved durability, and enhanced stability. The tribological analysis confirmed that PTFE provided lubrication, Ce-ZP reinforced mechanical strength, and the synergistic corrosion-wear resistance mitigated wear-corrosion coupling damage. These findings indicate that Ce-ZP coatings offer a promising solution for high-salinity and corrosive marine environments.

Superhydrophilic modification of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane by a novel miniemulsion template method

Zhichao Wu,Xiaotong Hao,Mingyuan Wu,Qingyun Wu,Jianjun Yang,Jiuyi Liu,Jianan Zhang

During the hydrophilic modification of PTFE hollow fiber membranes, the modifying substances often block the pores upon crosslinking. This blockage can lead to unsatisfactory water flux, despite the enhanced hydrophilicity of the membranes. Herein, we proposed a miniemulsion template method to solve the above problems, where water soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and crosslinking agent glutaraldehyde (GA) were selected to modify the PTFE membrane. The PTFE membrane was premoistened with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and then immersed in a miniemulsion template environment. The miniemulsion droplets and PVA macromolecules gradually diffused into the membrane pores and occupied the membrane voids to realize the displacement with IPA. The PVA macromolecules distributed around the miniemulsion droplets reacted with the crosslinking agent to form a crosslinked network that coated the membrane fibers. After removing the miniemulsion template, the occupied voids were released, thus providing channels for water transport and preventing pore blockage following the crosslinking of the modified substances. The modified PTFE membrane exhibits superior hydrophilicity and high water flux. The water flux can reach 1624.64 ± 20.82 L/(m 2 ·h) at the operating pressure of 0.04 MPa. After 16 days of soaking in strong acid (pH = 2), strong alkali (pH = 12), and a strong oxidizing agent (2000 ppm NaClO), the modified membrane retains its hydrophilic properties, demonstrating excellent chemical stability, better antifouling, and oil-water separation performance. Therefore, the modified PTFE hollow fiber membrane demonstrates significant potential for water treatment applications.

Biomimetic Superhydrophobic Construction of a PTFE-HFM Surface with CNTs for Waste Oil Purification

Yunlong Dai,Kaikai Chen,Haibo Yan,Zhengjie Yue,Shuang Zhang,Jingjing Yan,Changfa Xiao

The complex composition of industrial waste oil poses a severe challenge to efficient separation and recycling, urgently necessitating the development of membrane materials that combine high separation efficiency, excellent high-temperature stability, and antifouling performance. In this paper, a carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber membrane (PPHFM) was fabricated via the wet impregnation method. Results indicated that CNTs were uniformly dispersed within the PDMS matrix, synergistically constructing a hierarchically rough surface and endowing the membrane with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties. The optimized membrane pore structure conferred molecular sieving ability, achieving a separation efficiency of 94.32% for water-in-oil emulsified oil. Simultaneously, the membrane exhibited excellent permeation flux: the initial flux for kerosene reached 454.96 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1, and the flux for waste oil at 150 °C was 47.39 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1. The poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) reinforcement layer endowed the membrane with ultrahigh mechanical strength (tensile strength >450 MPa). The optimized CM-2 membrane (CNTs 2 wt %) exhibited outstanding antifouling properties and cycling stability: after 4 consecutive operational cycles, the flux recovery ratio remained at 81.8% in the high-temperature waste oil system; it maintained a high flux even after long-term operation with high-temperature waste oil. This study successfully fabricated a CNT/PPHFM material. This membrane can efficiently treat industrial waste oil and exhibits enhanced durability, demonstrating broad application potential in demanding environments.

Design of Litchi-Like Al/PTFE with Superior Reactivity and Application in Solid Propellants

Ting Liu,Cui Nie,Yao-feng Mao,Yu Zhang,Gang Li,Fu-de Nie,Jun Wang,Jie Chen

The combustion efficiency and reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles, as a crucial component in solid propellants, are constrained by the inert oxide layer aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can remove the oxide layer, however, carbon deposition generated during the reaction process still limits the reaction efficiency of Al/PTFE fuel. Here, a litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel with the nano-PTFE islands distributed on the Al particles surface is successfully designed, based on localized activation and synergistic reaction strategies, to solve the Al 2 O 3 layer and carbon deposition. This unique PTFE-coated structure can achieve localized activation of Al by surface etching, creating reaction channels, and exposing the active Al. Such a channel network promotes the circulation of fluorine and oxygen, stimulating the synergistic reactions of Al-F and Al-O and energy output. Regulating the PTFE content can maximize the elimination of carbon deposition and achieve the full combustion reaction of Al/PTFE. The maximum flame area and pressure output of the litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel increased by 241.9%, 734.7%, 118.4%, and 265.2%, respectively, compared with traditional physical mixture and core-shell structure Al/PTFE fuels. The localized activation and synergistic effects of litchi-like structure effectively transform carbon waste into a valuable resource, introducing a novel approach for the propellants.

Tuning the reactivity and combustion characteristics of PTFE/Al through carbon nanotubes and grapheme

Jun Wang,Chengcheng Zeng,Chunhong Zhan,Long Zhang

Nanoenergetic composites composed of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and fuel (Aluminum) have potential applications in the military and civilian fields owing to high energy density and exothermic reaction. Herein, the ignition, energy output and combustion characteristics of Al/PTFE were tuned by employed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene based on high thermal conductivity. The highest output energy and combustion speed of PTFE/Al with 3 wt% CNTs are 3158 J/g and 397 m/s, respectively, which are higher than that of PTFE/Al (2106 J/g and 260 m/s) and PTFE/Al with graphene (2201 J/g and 286 m/s). The onset reaction temperature and ignition delay time of PTFE/Al with 3 wt% CNTs are reduced by 80 °C and 0.21 ms, respectively. Furthermore, the flame structure of PTFE/Al with graphene is significantly changed from semicircle to spiculate. This work provides efficient approach to improve reactivity and combustion properties and understand the heat transfer in combustion reaction process of PTFE/Al.

Reinforcement of Frictional Vibration Noise Reduction Properties of a Polymer Material by PTFE Particles

Naner Li,Conglin Dong,Yuhang Wu

The insufficient lubrication of the contact interface between moving parts can easily induce severe friction vibration and noise under extreme working conditions, which will threaten the service life and reliability of polymer moving components, including water-lubricated stern tube polymer bearings. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) modified by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles was developed. The effects of PTFE on the wear and vibration behaviors of modified TPU sliding against the ZCuSn10Zn2ring-plates were investigated. The coefficients of friction (COFs), wear mass losses, wear morphologies, frictional vibration, and noise were analyzed synthetically. The results showed that a suitable mass content of PTFE reduced the COFs and wear mass losses of the TPU composites by more than 50% and 40%, respectively, while presenting an excellent friction reduction. The lower COFs of modified TPU showed a small fluctuation amplitude and eliminated vibration waveforms at high vibrational frequencies, which was useful for reducing frictional vibration and noise. The knowledge gained in this study is useful for a better understanding of the wear behaviors of polymer composites, as well as for the design a new polymer material with good self-lubricating and frictional vibration and noise reduction properties.
