Novel KMnO 4 -treated magnetic biochar (FMBC) was successfully synthesized by addition of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 during carbonization and KMnO 4 treatment following for Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption. SEM-EDS, XPS, and ICP-AES were used to evaluate the FMBC and magnetic biochar (FBC) on surface morphology, surface chemistry characteristics, surface functional groups, and Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption behavior. Results showed that the Langmuir maximum adsorption quantity of FMBC reached 148 mg/g for Pb(II) and 79 mg/g for Cd(II), nearly 7 times of that of FBC. The enhancement of FMBC for heavy metal adsorption was due to the successful load of manganese oxides and the increased oxygen functional groups consistent with XPS and FTIR results. The adsorption capacities of FMBC were maintained over 95% when the pH value was higher than 2.5 and 3.5 for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption performances of both heavy metals by FMBC were hardly influenced by ionic strength and humid acid. The adsorption capacities of FMBC could maintain over 50% and 87% after four cycles for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The saturation magnetization of FMBC was about 11.5 emu/g, which did not change after adsorption. This work proposed a new method to fabricate a magnetic biochar with high adsorption capacities of heavy metals Pb(II) and Cd(II).

To investigate the adsorption effects of aged microplastics (MPs) on Pb(II) and their co-transport properties in homogeneous (quartz sand) and heterogeneous (quartz sand with apple branches biochar) porous media, we explored the co-transport of UV-irradiated aged MPs and coexisting Pb(II) along with their interaction mechanisms. The UV aging process increased the binding sites and electronegativity of the aged MPs' surface, enhancing its adsorption capacity for Pb(II). Aged MPs significantly improved Pb(II) transport through homogeneous media , while Pb(II) hindered the transport of aged MPs by reducing electrostatic repulsion between these particles and the quartz sand. When biochar, with its loose and porous structure, was used as a porous medium, it effectively inhibited the transport capacity of both contaminants. In addition, since the aged MPs cannot penetrate the column, a portion of Pb(II) adsorbed by the aged MPs will be co-deposited with the aged MPs, hindering Pb(II) transport to a greater extent. The transport experiments were simulated and interpreted using two-point kinetic modeling and the DLVO theory. The study results elucidate disparities in the capacity of MPs and aged MPs to transport Pb(II), underscoring the potential of biochar application as an effective strategy to impede the dispersion of composite environmental pollutants.

Recently, graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention as new electrode-modified materials for different electrochemical sensing platforms. However, graphene-based nanomaterials modified heavy metal sensors often have the disadvantages in that their detection ranges are not wide enough. To solve this problem, an easy and feasible approach derived from laser engraving technique to fabricate a high-quality 3D porous graphene-based heavy metal sensor with a quite wide detection range was established. The nitrogen-doped laser engraved graphene (N@LEG) was synthesized via introducing polyaniline (PANI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as N-dopant. Herein, by coupling the unique electrochemical properties and the 3D porous structure framework with large electrochemical active surface areas of LEG with the strong metal ions affinity of N atoms, N@LEG modified glassy carbon electrode (N@LEG/GCE) with in-situ bismuth film modification has been successfully utilized for the simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). After optimizing conditions, the proposed sensor exhibits quite wide linear ranges varying from 5 to 10 g L −1 and 10 to 380 g L −1 for Cd(II), and 0.5 to 10 μg L −1 and 10 μg L −1 to 380 μg L −1 for Pb(II), respectively. In addition, the detection limits are calculated to be 1.08 g L −1 (S/N = 3) for Cd(II) and 0.16 g L −1 (S/N = 3) for Pb(II), which are nearly 3 times and 60 times less than the guideline values of the drinking water presented by the World Health Organization (WHO), for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Furthermore, the results describe satisfactory advantages of remarkable sensitivity, selectivity, anti-interference, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. Besides, the fabricated sensor is proved to be a potential perspective to detect Cd(II) and Pb(II) in actual water samples.

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) with a particle size of 23.80 ± 0.33 nm was prepared from microcrystalline cellulose by a mixed treatment with acids and ultrasound. The NCC was chlorinated with thionyl chloride, submitted to dehydrating carbonization and oxidization, and then modified with ethylenediamine (EDA) to obtain fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (NCC–EDA). These were characterized by elemental analysis, TEM, BET, FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTA, XPS, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence. It was found that NCC–EDA were vesicle-like porous particles formed through the linking and intertwining effects of EDA on the SOCl2-treated NCC. The surface of NCC–EDA is rich in oxygen-, nitrogen- and sulfur-containing functional groups, and the particle size was 41.45 ± 0.55 nm. This endows the NCC–EDA with good dispersity in water, high absorbance and strong fluorescence. The NCC–EDA are shown to be viable probes in that their fluorescence is selectively quenching by Pb(II). The findings were exploited to design a fluorometric assay for Pb(II) that has a 24 nM detection limit.

To address the heavy metal water pollution caused by industrial wastewater discharge, a novel hydrogel adsorbent was prepared using organic matter derived from distiller's grains (DGS), a by-product of the brewing industry, as the main raw material and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as the modifier. Characterization results revealed that CMCS converted the adsorbent into a three-dimensional macroporous structure while enhancing its highly selective adsorption performance for Pb(II) and Cd(II), with adsorption capacities reaching as high as 825.3 mg·g −1 and 644.3 mg·g −1 , respectively, and removal efficiencies up to 99.4% and 95.2% within 10 min. The adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model (R 2 > 0.996) and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption was dominated by chemical adsorption. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the hydrogel formed complexation and coordination with Pb(II) and Cd(II) via the lone pair electrons of O and N atoms, and combined with hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction to achieve synergistic adsorption. Furthermore, adsorption experiments on industrial wastewater using this adsorbent demonstrated that it maintained excellent adsorption performance even after six adsorption-desorption cycles, and achieved a degradation rate of 51.3% after 28 days. The synthesis of this highly efficient adsorbent not only realizes the functional modification and high-value utilization of DGS but also provides a green solution for wastewater remediation, exhibiting great application potential.

Core-shell porphyrin-based magnetic nanocomposites with multi-functional groups were synthesized and used as effective adsorbents and crystal nuclei for removing Pb(II) from water. The effect of initial Pb(II) concentration ( C 0 ), equilibrium time and experimental temperature on the adsorption capacity has been investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the removal rate of Pb(II) can reach 84.3% only within 5 min, more efficient than similar adsorbents. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity of FST is up to 798.34 mg/g, which is much higher than previously reported results for removing Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms were proposed based on the results of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV–vis) and X-ray diffraction tests. The adsorption processes could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model regardless of C 0 . However, when C 0 was <19.2 mg/L, the adsorption process was a favorable monolayer interaction, controlled by the coordination between Pb(II) and porphyrin . When the C 0 was at the range of 19.2–512 mg/L, adsorption was multilayer interaction, and the process was controlled by crystallization and limiting solubility. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to study the optimal functional group towards Pb(II), which revealed that the adsorbability of tetrapyrrolic core to Pb(II) was better than that of NH, C O and Si O Si in porphyrin. This study provides a facile method for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions and offers theoretical and practical guidance on new adsorbent designs for selective removal of heavy metal ions .

Adsorption is recognized as a cost-effective, efficient, and versatile method for the treatment of heavy metal pollution, offering environmentally friendly solutions. The development of highly efficient and selective adsorbent materials is essential, with functional groups such as sulfhydryl and amine groups playing a crucial role in the effectiveness and selectivity of adsorption processes. Polymer-based materials have emerged as a promising class of selective adsorbents due to their naturally occurring amine groups. In this study, a bifunctional adsorbent with a concave morphology was developed by grafting sulfhydryl groups to selectively adsorb As(III) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and Pb(II) were found to be 165.51 mg g −1 and 62.38 mg g −1 , respectively, at an optimum dosage of 0.05 mg mL −1 and an original concentration of 20 mg L −1 for both metals. Notably, the concave spheres exhibited superior morphology advantages for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption compared to hollow and solid polymers, with adsorption capacities 1.8 times higher than hollow polymers and 3.7 times higher than solid spheres for As(III) adsorption, and 3.4 times higher than solid spheres for Pb(II) adsorption. Mechanistic studies revealed that the selective capture of As(III) was primarily attributed to the proposed reaction routes between As(III) and -SH groups. Isothermal models, including Langmuir and Freundlich, suggested that monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces may dominate for As(III), while multilayer adsorption is favored for Pb(II) extraction.

In the present study, a new adsorbent based on carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (CCN) was developed for the adsorption of Pb(II) from fish sauce. The prepared adsorbent material was characterized by zeta potential, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS tools. The changes in the morphological structure of the developed CCN surface were evidenced by SEM and TEM. The favorable adsorption conditions were selected by studying the contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and concentration of the used glutamic acid and NaCl. The results indicated that the Langmuir isotherm model agrees very well with experimental adsorption data ( R 2 = 0.9962) with a maximum adsorption capacity 232.56 mg/g of Pb(II) at 293.2 K. Additionally, data of the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2 > 0.9990). On the other hand, the thermodynamics studies show that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the developed CCN could be regenerated using acid treatment with a good reusability for Pb(II) adsorption. The results clearly indicated that the synthesized CCN could be effectively applied as a new material for Pb(II) adsorption from fish sauce solutions.

A magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP) functionalized with –SH groups for the selective removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous samples was synthesized by surface imprinting technique combined with a sol–gel process using 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane as monomer, tetraethyl orthosilicate as cross-linking agent, and Pb(II) ion as template. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP showed higher capacity and selectivity than that of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II) and pH of medium on adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP were studied. The experimental data fits well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum Pb(II)-sorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm is 32.58 mg/g and 16.50 mg/g for Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP, respectively. Kinetics studies show that the adsorption process obeys a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with high correlation coefficient ( R 2 = 0.9982). The separation factor of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP for Pb(II)/Cu(II), Pb(II)/Zn(II), and Pb(II)/Co(II) are 50.54, 52.14, and 37.39, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamic parameters Δ G , Δ H and Δ S were −4.98 kJ/mol, 3.27 kJ/mol and 28.84 J/mol/K, respectively. In addition, the spent Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP can be refreshed by simple washing with aqueous HCl solution, and there is no significant decrease in adsorption capacity after a test of up to five cycles, demonstrating that the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP is stable and reusable.

The removal of lead in drinking water has attracted considerable attention of researchers in recent years, especially, the trace characteristic of lead is a challenge to water treatment. Herein, 13X zeolite/reduced graphene oxide composite material (13X-rGO) with hierarchically porous structure was successfully prepared using graphene oxide (GO) and 13X zeolite via a chemical reduction method and presented great performance for removing trace Pb(II) from drinking water. The influence of some important parameters including adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial lead concentration, coexisting competing ions, solution pH value, etc. on the removal of Pb(II) was systematically investigated. The composite material showed better adsorption properties compared with a single component and their physical mixture, confirming the synergistic effect of rGO and 13X zeolite on Pb(II) adsorption. The effluent lead concentration could be decreased to the level permitted by World Health Organization (WHO) (<10 ppb) within 30 s under calcium content of 20 ppm and initial lead concentration of 150 ppb. Simultaneously, the as-prepared 13X-rGO performed excellent adsorption capacity meeting WHO standard (6.07 mg/g), which was about 2.23 times that of single 13X zeolite (2.72 mg/g). In the presence of interfering ions, the lead concentration could still be reduced to safe drinking water standard. Moreover, the adsorbent could be effectively regenerated by saturated sodium chloride solution. Therefore, 13X-rGO can be introduced as a promising adsorption material for the purification of drinking water contaminated with trace lead owing to rapid adsorption, low cost and recycling potential.

In this study, a novel adsorbent made from kiwi branch biochar modified with Zn-Fe (KB/Zn-Fe) was compared with original biochar to the Pb(II)'s adsorptivity from waste water. The adsorbent was synthetized by liquid-phase deposition. Batches of sorption tests were performed, and the biochars' representative properties were tested. Characterizations revealed the physicochemical properties of biochars and showed that the KB/Zn-Fe composites were successfully synthesized. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were proven to satisfactorily fit the original biochar and KB/Zn-Fe. The KB/Zn-Fe showed Langmuir maximum adsorption ability to Pb (II) in aqueous solution of 161.29 mg g -1 , compared with 36.76 mg g -1 for original biochar. The adsorption ability of Pb(II) decreased and the Pb(II) removal efficiency increased with increasing biochar dose. The effect of co-existence of NO 3 - to the absorptive capacity of KB/Zn-Fe on Pb(II) was unremarkable, but Cl - could increase the absorptive capacity. Multiple Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms by KB/Zn-Fe include surface precipitation of metal hydroxides, complexation with active functional groups and ion-exchange. This work provides guidance for future production of biochar with efficient adsorption ability, which could be used to remove Pb(II) ions from wastewater.

Sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl oxide (PEO), and ceramic nanomaterials were used to prepare alginate composite gel. The present study examined the removal rate and adsorption capacity of alginate composite gel for removal of wastewater As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II). Batch experiments were conducted to study the influence of experimental parameters such as pH and temperature, as well as the mechanism of As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) adsorption with the new adsorbent. The results showed the high efficiency of sodium alginate composite gel for removal of wastewater As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II). Under the condition of the best liquid-solid ratio and the contact time, the removal rates of As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) were 67.42%, 95.31%, and 93.96%, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic equation was superior to fit the adsorption kinetics process. The isothermal adsorption models of As(III) and Pb(II) fitted well with the Freundlich model, and Zn(II) fitted well with the Langmuir model. The results of SEM, EDS, XPS, and FTIR analyses revealed that the adsorption process occurred mainly via chemisorption. The results of the present study suggest that new adsorbents can be effectively utilized for As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) removal from water.
