Preparation and Characterization of SA/GO/PEG Gel Beads and Their Adsorption Properties for Pb2+

Xiaofang You,Yuxia Hou,Jingwei Wang,Lin Li,Meng He

This study aims to address the challenge of treating Pb 2+ in mining wastewater, a persistent issue in water environment pollution control. The sodium alginate/graphene oxide/polyethylene glycol (SA/GO/PEG) gel beads were designed and prepared with graphene oxide (GO), sodium alginate (SA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials by combining experiments and simulation. Firstly, the simulation system of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was constructed through molecular simulation, and the optimal composition of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was determined. The simulation results indicated that, with a PEG polymerization degree of 4000, the SA/GO/PEG gel bead system exhibited the greatest structural stability and the most effective cross-linked. Based on the understanding of the structure–performance relationship, SA/GO/PEG4000 gel beads were prepared to achieve an adsorbent with both high adsorption capacity and good stability. Characterization results indicated the successful cross-linked of polyethylene glycol with sodium alginate and graphene oxide, which not only introduced additional oxygen-containing functional groups and increased the crystallinity of the gel beads but, more importantly, led to the formation of a dense and complex three-dimensional network. This structure contributed to the improved thermal stability of the composite. Adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of Pb 2+ onto SA/GO/PEG gel beads followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C were 490.20, 497.51, and 526.32 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the gel beads exhibited excellent reusability, retaining 92.64% of their initial adsorption capacity after four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

Nanoplastics enhance the stability of kaolinite and affect the sorption of Pb2+ in aquatic environments

Jiayan Wu,Quanyun Ye,Meiqing Chen,Leiye Sun,Sheng Liu,Linqing Liu,Pingxiao Wu,Nengwu Zhu

The heteroaggregation of nanoplastics with minerals has been widely investigated. However, few studies have focused on the interaction between similar negatively charged clay minerals and nanoplastics, especially how their interactions affect the migration of heavy metals. This study investigated heteroaggregation of kaolinite (a model of natural mineral) with polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and the effect of heteroaggregates on lead (Pb 2+ ) sorption . Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement highlighted that PSNPs owned higher colloidal stability than kaolinite in aquatic environments. Due to the surface charge heterogeneity of kaolinite, the heteroaggregation behavior between kaolinite and PSNPs was highly pH-dependent. At pH 3.0 and 6.0, kaolinite particles with positively charged edge surfaces favored the association of PSNPs. PSNPs were found to be primarily attached on the kaolinite edge (010) surface, followed by Al-terminated (001) and Si-terminated (00 1 ¯ ) surfaces based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. At pH 10.0, they had negligible interaction due to the strong electrostatic repulsion. Interestingly, kaolinite carried more negative charges after heteroaggregation with PSNPs, resulting in slower edge-to-face homoaggregation and higher dispersibility, and thus increasing the sorption capacity for Pb 2+ . This investigation provided a new understanding of nanoplastics interactions with negatively charged minerals and highlighted the vital role of nanoplastics in mineral stability and contaminant migration.

Fabrication of metal-organic framework@Yeast composite materials for efficient removal of Pb2+ in water

Jinguli Wen,Panpan He,Chao Lei,Enjun Lv,Yuhang Wu,Junkuo Gao,Juming Yao

ZIF-67@Yeast was synthesized with in-situ growth procedure by using hydrothermally carbonized yeast as the substrate material. The prepared ZIF-67@Yeast was characterized in detail by SEM, BET, XRD and TG analysis. In addition, the adsorption properties of Pb 2+ by ZIF-67@Yeast were also investigated. The results show that the adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ by ZIF-67@Yeast is larger than the sum of the adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ by individual yeast and ZIF-67. Yeast could maintain a stable morphology after hydrothermal carbonization at 180 °C. Therefore, many MOFs synthesized by hydrothermal or microwave methods at 180 °C could also be compounded with Yeast as a base material. This provides more possibilities that heavy metal ions are adsorbed by the synthesis of more diverse MOFs composites.

Chirag B. Godiya,Ma Liang,Sayed Mir Sayed,Dawei Li,Xiaolin Lu

Heavy metal ion pollution leads to severe health risk to human beings. Herein, a natural and highly efficient sodium alginate (ALG)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) composite hydrogel was designed and fabricated for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater. The adsorption of heavy metal ions on the ALG based, 3D composite hydrogel were thoroughly investigated in this study. Furthermore, the in situ reduced metal nanoparticle-loaded ALG/PEI composite hydrogel provided us a sustainable utilization route of the heavy metal ion with a promising adsorption-catalysis ability. In general, this research will present an effective and practical paradigm for the cascaded treatment and recycling of heavy metal ions in wastewater.

Characteristics of catechin loading rice porous starch/chitosan functional microsphere and its adsorption towards Pb2+

Suwei Jiang,Hailiang Hu

In this paper, we explore the adsorption potential of catechin (CT) loaded composite microspheres and provide a new micron scale carrier of functional factor. Chitosan (CS) modified rice porous starch (RPS/CS) was used as a CT adsorption carrier to prepare bioactive CT-loaded composite microspheres (CT@RPS/CS). The adsorption kinetics, storage characteristics, and biological activity maintenance of CT@RPS/CS were studied in an aqueous solution, and the sustained-release characteristics of CT@RPS/CS were studied in vitro during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. An aqueous solution further studied the removal characteristics of adsorbed heavy metal ion Pb 2+ . RPS/CS can significantly improve the ability to adsorb CT. RPS/CS can also significantly improve CT's storage stability, antioxidant stress, and slow-release characteristics, and the sustained release effect in gastric and intestinal juice. CT@RPS/CS can be removed Pb 2+ by adsorbing in the solution, and their adsorption was physical adsorption and chemisorption, but the primary interaction is chemisorption. CT@RPS/CS can be used as a micron carrier of new food functional factors, which has potential space for improving and expanding the functional characteristics of its loaded functional factors and the endowing of new functions.

PADLOCK: A protein-enzyme-free dual-DNAzyme cascade for ultrasensitive and field-deployable Pb2+ detection

Daqi Chen,Zhezhi Fang,Limin Wang,Tao Zou

Ultrasensitive and field-deployable detection of Pb 2+ is highly desirable for environmental monitoring and public health protection. Nucleic acid-based sensors are promising for this purpose because they are programmable and compatible with isothermal analysis. However, current amplification strategies face a fundamental trade-off: enzyme-assisted methods provide high sensitivity yet require unstable protein catalysts and cold-chain logistics, whereas enzyme-free circuits are operationally robust but suffer from thermodynamic background leakage. To address this sensitivity–stability paradox, we propose PADLOCK (Pb 2+ -Activated Dual-DNAzyme Locked On-site Cascade Kit), a protein-enzyme-free amplification strategy operating at ambient temperature (25 °C). PADLOCK uses a two-stage catalytic cascade for high-gain signal amplification. Specifically, the upstream GR-5 DNAzyme module was optimized by tuning hairpin stem complementarity and loop geometry to suppress premature trigger release, while the downstream self-locked DNAzyme (SLD) was redesigned through base-pair engineering to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. This cascaded “cleavage-then-unlock” architecture achieves amplification gains substantially exceeding those of conventional enzyme-free circuits such as catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) or hybridization chain reaction (HCR), while maintaining near-zero background, a combination that is difficult to achieve in enzyme-free systems. Under optimal conditions, PADLOCK demonstrates a sensitivity range of 1 pM to 1 μM with a detection limit of 342 fM and exceptional selectivity over eight competing ions. Reliable quantification in real water and soil samples yielded spike recoveries of 98.17%–111.69%. Furthermore, integration with a custom-built smartphone imaging interface further enables visual monitoring across 100 pM–1 μM, providing a robust, point-of-care testing (POCT) platform that eliminates cold-chain logistics and enables ambient-temperature operation for decentralized heavy-metal screening in resource-limited settings.

In-situ lignin assembly on aramid nanofibers: fibrous hybrids for stable and efficient Pb2+ removal

Zhiqiang Qi,Hongzhen Cai,Xiangsheng Han,Zhihao Duan,Jingting Jin,Shunyi Zhang,Keyan Yang,Jiankang Zhang,Wenzhi Li

Constructing lignin-based nano-adsorbents with modulated surface polarity demonstrates promising efficiency, sustainability and biocompatibility in the application of Pb 2+ removal, nevertheless, which is hard to achieve. Here, a delicately designed assembly process of amphiphilic lignin was performed on the surfaces of aramid nanofibers (ANF), and a fibrous nano-hybrid (ANF@L x ) with uniform sheet-like lignin aggregations on ANF was obtained. Ascribing to the dominated π-π stacking between benzene rings on ANF and lignin, the H-bond between them weakened relatively, and more oxygen containing polar groups on lignin were exposed. Combining the advantages of fibrous morphology and active surfaces, the ANF@L x exhibited favorable processibility that can be molded into membranes and aerogels with different scales and shapes, and conducive adsorption capacity (∼587.8 mg/g), kinetic (achieve equilibrium within 1 min) and selectivity toward Pb 2+ in contaminated water resources. Thus, this work paved a green, simple and energy efficient way to modulate the assembly of lignin in micro-nano interfaces, and construct lignin-based nano-adsorbents with both of high Pb 2+ removal efficiency and promising industrial application potential.

Chitin/egg shell membrane@Fe3O4 nanocomposite hydrogel for efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution

Baoquan Jia,Dingna Liu,Chengyu Niu,Qili Yu,Jie Ren,Qingye Liu,Haiqiang Wang

The development of adsorbents by using the byproducts or waste from large-scale industrial and agricultural production is of great significance, and is considered to be an economic and efficient strategy to remove the heavy metals from polluted water. In this work, a novel chitin/EM@Fe3O4 nanocomposite hydrogel was obtained from a NaOH/urea aqueous system, where the proteins of egg shell membrane and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were chemically bonded to chitin polymer chains with the help of epichlorohydrin. Due to the existence of a large number of –NH2, –OH, –CONH–, –COOH and hemiacetal groups, the adsorption efficiency for Pb2+ into the absorbent was dramatically enhanced. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption behavior strongly depends on various factors, such as initial pH, initial Pb2+ concentration, incubation temperature and contact time. The kinetic experiments indicated that the adsorption process for Pb2+ in water solution agreed with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The film diffusion or chemical reaction is the rate limiting process in the initial adsorption stage, and the adsorption of Pb2+ into the nanocomposite hydrogel can well fit the Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that such adsorption behaviors were dominated by an endothermic (ΔH° > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) process.

DNAzyme-CRISPR driven dual-mode biosensor with nanozyme signal amplification for on-site Pb2+ detection

Xin Meng,Yuanyuan Yue,Mengyang Huang,Zhangqun Duan,Kang Liu,Lina Wu

Background Lead ion (Pb 2+ ) is a toxic heavy metal that poses severe threats to food safety. Traditional methods like inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) rely on bulky instrumentation, which are limited by high costs, complex sample preparation requirements, and inability to meet the demands for rapid on-site testing. Nanozyme-based biosensors have emerged as promising alternatives, yet single-mode sensors often suffer from matrix interference in complex food samples. Therefore, developing a rapid and reliable on-site method is critical for Pb 2+ detection. Results To address this challenge, a CRISPR/Cas12a-driven dual-mode biosensor integrating Pt/CeO 2 nanozyme-mediated peroxidase activity with GR-5 DNAzyme recognition was developed. The biosensor's design capitalizes on GR-5 DNAzyme for Pb 2+ -specific recognition, triggering CRISPR/Cas12a-mediated cleavage of electrochemical/colorimetric signal probe SH-ssDNA-Pt/CeO 2 to generate dual signals. This innovative platform synergizes electrochemical precision and colorimetric simplicity for Pb 2+ detection in complex food matrices. The biosensor achieved an ultra-sensitive electrochemical response (linear range: 0.002–200 nM; limit of detection: 0.14 pM) alongside a robust colorimetric readout (linear range: 0.5–2000 nM; limit of detection: 0.47 nM), representing significant sensitivity improvements over conventional single-mode sensors. Crucially, the intrinsic cross-verification mechanism between orthogonal signal modalities minimized false positives while ensuring >90.5 % recovery in spiked corn, edible oil, beef and red wine samples with RSD <5 %. These results highlight the potential of the dual-mode sensor as a practical, field deployable sensing platform for the detection of Pb 2+ . Significance This work innovatively integrates the specificity of CRISPR with the catalytic properties of nanozymes into a self-validating electrochemical/colorimetric dual-mode system. The detection method not only establishes a robust platform for highly sensitive, reliable and visualized detection of Pb 2+ in complex food matrices, but also pioneers a new paradigm for multi-modal biosensor design.

Oxygen vacancy-rich NiCo2O4 nanoparticles loaded on polyaniline nanowires for highly selective Pb2+ electrochemical sensing

Xinying Han,Yutong Shan,Rui Wang,Shiyu Wang,Yang Zhao,Huan Wang

To satisfy the pressing demands for heavy metal ions (HMIs) detection, A novel sensor was developed to detect lead (Pb 2+ ) ions based on oxygen vacancy-rich NiCo 2 O 4 (NCO) nanoparticles and polyaniline (PANI) nanowires. The NCO/PANI nanocomposite was synthesized via a synergistic salt-assisted carbonization activation and conductive polymers doping strategy, which simultaneously introduced abundant oxygen vacancies and optimized the heterostructure interface. The NCO nanoparticles coupled with imine functional groups (-N=) on PANI create synergistic adsorption-catalytic sites for Pb 2+ . The sensitivity of the NCO/PANI-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) reached an impressive value of 14.96 μA·μM −1 , representing increases of 2.5-fold, 4.14-fold, and 24.9-fold compared to that of the NCO-modified GCE (5.99 μA·μM −1 ), PANI-modified GCE (3.616 μA·μM −1 ), and bare GCE (0.6 μA·μM −1 ), respectively. This performance results from oxygen vacancies accelerated electron transfer, redox pair interactions (Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ ), and enhanced Pb 2+ adsorption by complexation and pore confinement. The sensing platform achieves an ultralow detection limit of 0.001 μM (S/N = 3) and exhibits robust anti-interference against common coexisting interferences (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ bisphenol A, catechol, hydroquinone, resorcinol), with satisfactory recovery (101 %–106.2 %) and excellent long-term stability in real water samples. This work not only establishes a robust foundation for optimizing material selection but also expands the horizon for the development of electrochemical sensing platforms.

Affected interactions and co-transport of cadmium sulfide quantum dots with Pb2+ by surface functionalization

Dianji Ding,Jiao Fei,Yong Yao,Yanji Jiang,Huimin Sun,Xianqiang Yin

Quantum dots (QDs), emerging semiconductor nanomaterials, have been detected in various environmental media and can adsorb co-existing contaminants (e.g., Pb 2+ ). Surface modifications aimed at enhancing the performance of QDs can significantly affect their physicochemical properties, but their effects on QDs environmental behavior remain unclear. Herein, we investigated the adsorption and co-transport behaviors of aminated (NQD), hydroxylated (OQD), and carboxylated cadmium sulfide QDs (CQD) with Pb 2+ via batch adsorption and quartz sand column experiments. The influence of ionic strength (IS) and cation valence on the co-transport of QDs and Pb 2+ was examined. Our experimental findings revealed that Pb 2+ inhibited the mobility of OQD and CQD but enhanced the transport of NQD due to the surface complexation and cation bridging effects. This promoting effect was weakened with increasing IS and cation valence, indicating the involvement of non-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek forces. Furthermore, OQD and CQD with high mobility and strong affinity to Pb 2+ effectively promoted the transport of Pb 2+ , with CQD exhibiting a more pronounced effect than OQD. Conversely, NQD reduced Pb 2+ efflux due to their lower mobility and stronger adsorption to Pb 2+ . These results provide valuable insights into the role of surface modifications on QDs and their interactions with co-existing contaminants in subsurface environments.

Silica-based mesoporous ion-imprinted fluorescent sensors for the detection of Pb2+ in aqueous environments

Qingming Xu,Jie Lv,Tongfei Wu,Bo Hu,Yunhui Li,Fanming Zeng,Jianwei Zhu

In this work, an environment-friendly core–shell material based on CDs@SiO2 as the core and mesoporous ion-imprinted layer as the shell was reported. As a highly sensitive and accurate fluorescent sensor for the detection of Pb2+ in environmental water, the composition combined ion imprinting technology with quantum dots to selectively quench the fluorescence of CDs by metal coordination in the presence of Pb2+, and the visual change of gradually weakening blue color could be observed by the naked eye for visual detection. The mesoporous structure significantly improved the detection recognition rate of CDs@SiO2@MIIPs.The molecularly imprinted sensor presented a favorable linear relationship over a Pb2+ concentration range from 10 nmol l−1 to 100 nmol l−1 and a detection limit of 2.16 nmol l−1 for Pb2+. The imprinting factor of the CDs@SiO2@MIIPs was 5.13. The sensor has a fast detection rate, is highly selective in the identification of Pb2+, and can be reused up to 10 times. The applicability of the method was evaluated by the determination of Pb2+ in spiked environmental water samples with satisfactory results.
