High-Loading Temperature-Responsive Fire-Extinguishing Microcapsules via RAFT Suspension Polymerization

Cai Rui,Zhao Bingling,Zhang Jiahe,Huang Xinyan,Guo Zanru,Zheng Zhenan,Huang Jie,Luo Yingwu

Temperature-responsive fire-extinguishing microcapsules (TFMCs) have garnered considerable attention due to their ability to autonomously release fire-extinguishing agents upon reaching a critical temperature, thereby mitigating the fire spread. The fire-extinguishing performance of TFMCs is determined by the loading capacity of the fire-extinguishing agents. However, conventional fabrication methods typically yield low loading efficiency (<40%), which impairs the fire-extinguishing performance of TFMCs. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to prepare high-loading TFMCs, involving poly(methyl methacrylate-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P(MMA-EGDMA)) as the shell material and DMTP as the core material, via RAFT suspension polymerization for the first time. The results demonstrate that a well-defined core–shell structure and robust shell are beneficial to suppress diffusion and leakage of fire-extinguishing agents, thereby enabling high-loading TFMCs. RAFT polymerization markedly facilitates the formation of well-defined core–shell structures. Moreover, increasing EGDMA content and introducing methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional comonomer improve the shell mechanical strength. However, excessive EGDMA content disrupts core–shell structure formation, and either an excessively high or low RAFT/ADVN mass ratio can result in the rupture of TFMCs. When the mass ratio of shell monomers (MMA/MAA/EGDMA) is 6/3/1 and that of RAFT/ADVN is 1/2, the resulting TFMCs display a well-defined core–shell structure and an approximately spherical morphology, with an average diameter of 946 nm and a particle size distribution of 1.05, achieving the highest loading efficiency and encapsulation efficiency of 70.6% and 94.3%, respectively. Fire-extinguishing tests show that these TFMCs reduced the extinguishing time from 58.5 to 11.6 s. This work provides a new approach to encapsulating fluorinated fire-extinguishing agents and lays the foundation for the industrial application of TFMCs.

Poly(phosphonium)-Functionalized Double-Armed β-CD Antimicrobial Material via RAFT

Xiangbin Sun,Peng Cao,Xue Bai,Yufeng He,Pengfei Song,Rongmin Wang

Bacterial infections have emerged as the primary adversary, causing severe health complications and incalculable economic losses. To tackle this issue, it is imperative to develop novel and highly effective antimicrobial agents. In this study, a series of double-armed antibacterial polymers (CD-QPS) were synthesized via Steglich esterification and reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) polymerization. Notably, this represents a significant breakthrough in the field of antibacterial polymers derived from the quaternary phosphonium salt ionic liquid (QPSIL) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) via RAFT polymerization. Leveraging the controllable polymerization degree offered by RAFT and the functional group density resulting from its three-dimensional topological structure, CD-QPS exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with bacteriostatic rates reaching 100 and 99.9%, respectively. What is even more exciting is that CD-QPS demonstrated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) as low as 20 μg mL–1 for E. coli and 40 μg mL–1 for S. aureus, surpassing those reported for other antibacterial materials as well as the standard drug ampicillin (32/62.5 μg mL–1). Furthermore, preservation tests conducted on oranges confirmed that CD-QPS exerted long-term antibacterial effects for an astonishing duration of 14 days. Additionally, the cytotoxicity test verified good biocompatibility of CD-QPS. In brief, we not only provide a new strategy for constructing double-armed polymers known as CD-QPS but also introduce a novel antimicrobial agent with high efficiency and long-term performance.

Fast Recovery Double-Network Hydrogels Based on Particulate Macro-RAFT Agents

Runda Wang,Yiteng Lei,Tao Zhu,Rong Fan,Zhongying Jiang,Jie Sheng

Synthetic hydrogels struggle to match the high strength, toughness, and recoverability of biological tissues under periodic mechanical loading. Although the hydrophobic polymer chain of polystyrene (PS) may initially collapse into a nanosphere upon contact with water, it has the ability to be elongated when it is subjected to an external force. To address this challenge, we employ the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method to design a carboxyl-substituted polystyrene (CPS) which can form a covalently cross-linked network with four-armed amino-terminated polyethylene glycol (4-armed-PEG-NH2), and a ductile polyacrylamide network is introduced in order to prepare a double-network (DN) hydrogel. Our results demonstrate that the DN hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties (0.62 kJ m–2 fracture energy, 2510.89 kJ m–3 toughness, 0.43 MPa strength, and 820% elongation) when a sufficient external force is applied to fracture it. Moreover, when the DN hydrogel is subjected to a 200% strain, it displays superior recoverability (94.5%). This holds a significant potential in enhancing the mechanical performance of synthetic hydrogels and can have wide-ranging applications in fields such as tissue engineering for hydrophobic polymers.

Preparation and dispersion properties of polycarbonate superplasticizers based on RAFT polymerization

Ding Mei,Zhang Xiuzhi,Mi Xiangyun,Zhang Ming,Guo Wenjuan,Pei Meishan

Comb-like polycarbonate superplasticizers (PCEs) are widely used as a cement additive, and obtaining high-performance PCEs has become a hot topic. PCEs are usually kind of random polymers obtained by free radical solution polymerization, and thus it is hard to clarify the relationship between the properties of PCE and its structure. In this work, the block copolymers PCEs with the clear structure were synthesized by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The relationship between the structure of PCE and its dispersion properties in cement was systematically discussed based on the flowability data of the cement paste with PCEs and the adsorption data of PCEs on the cement particles. Effects of the monomer ratio and the molecular weight on the adsorption and dispersion ability of PCEs in cement paste were studied. The results showed that the adsorption capacity and dispersion properties of PCEs in cement paste are related to the structural parameters of the polymer molecules. PCEs exhibited the optimal dispersion properties when the ratio of the monomers was 6:1 and the molecular weight was no greater than PCE-8 ( M n = 53,450, M w = 62,358).

Structure and properties of polycarboxylic acid dispersants synthesized by RAFT method

Xiangyun Mi,Xiuzhi Zhang,Mei Ding,Ming Zhang,Meishan Pei

Polycarboxylic acid dispersants (PCs) with comb-like molecular structure have become the focus of dispersants. However, there are many contradictions in the study of molecular structure of polycarboxylic acids. In this article, a series of PCs with different molecular structures were prepared from acrylic acid (AA) and methyl allyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (TPEG) by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The structural characteristics of PCs were characterized by flourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The dispersion performance of PCs to cement was measured by the fluidity and adsorbing capacity. The results show that the dispersion performance and adsorbing capacity of PCs are significantly related to its structure. The adsorption and dispersion properties increase with the increase of carboxyl content and molecular weight. However, this phenomenon is limited to a certain range that the acid ether ratio in this range is no greater than 5:1, and the molecular weight is no greater than PC-4 ( Mw = 82 125, Mn = 63 889).

Preparation of cellulose-based fluorescent elastomers via RAFT polymerization and lanthanide coordination

Hu Rui,Zheng Anjia,Zhang Cancan,Wang Chuanxi,Zhang Jiaming,Ge Chongxiao,Li Qing,Zhang Bin,Jiang Feng

High-performance sustainable elastomers with tunable fluorescent behavior designed via robust and facile strategies are highly pursued. In this work, cellulose- graft -poly(tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate- co -2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate) (Cell- g -P(THFA- co -AAEM)) copolymers with different compositions were prepared through homogeneous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this design, cellulose acts as the backbone, while the hemicellulose derivative tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA) and the petroleum-based monomer 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate (AAEM) play the role of soft and rigid segments in the grafted side chains. By tuning the THFA/AAEM feed ratio and cellulose content, the mechanical and adhesion properties of these Cell- g -P(THFA- co -AAEM) copolymers were well manipulated. In addition, the β -diketone groups in THFA repeating units can be further used as the ligands to form dynamic networks in the copolymer matrix with terbium (Tb 3+ ) and europium (Eu 3+ ) ions via lanthanide coordination. The resulting coordinated Cell- g -P(THFA- co -AAEM) copolymers exhibit significantly improved tensile strength and tunable fluorescent colors by adjusting the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ ratio. The combination of bio-based resources and lanthanide coordination can be further performed to achieve strong sustainable elastomers with improved macroscopic mechanical properties and unique fluorescent behavior.

Controlled Synthesis of Polyelectrolytes by 4-Cyanopentanoic Acid Dithiobenzoate Mediated RAFT Polymerization

Feng Chen,Daoxing Dai,Jingtao Yang,Zhengdong Fei,Mingqiang Zhong

We reported controlled synthesis of methacrylic acid, 2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propa- nesulfonic acid (three electrolyte-type monomers) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with the chain transfer agent (CTA) (4-cyanopentanoic acid)-4-dithiobenzoate and initiator (I) 4,4′-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) in homogeneous aqueous media. Three distinct [monomer]0: [I]0: [CTA]0 ratios (50:0.2:1, 100:0.2:1, 500:0.2:1) were conducted. The polymerizations exhibited the characteristics of a controlled/“living” polymerization which demonstrated well-controlled molecular weight and low molecular weight distribution. Finally, the results of this investigation were used as a guide for the preparation of a series of well-defined polyelectrolytes (DPn = 50–500, PDI = 1.08–1.17) in high yield.

RAFT polymerization of a RGD peptide-based methacrylamide monomer for cell adhesion

Chao Chen,San H. Thang

Synthetic peptides containing the arginine–glycine–aspartate (RGD) motif have been used extensively as inhibitors of integrin–ligand interactions in studies of cell adhesion and cell target moiety. MARGD (sequences: Phe-Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser), a methacrylamide monomer containing a pending RGD peptide, was synthesized and obtained in high purity (≥90%) via an automated peptide synthesizer followed by a simple precipitation in diethyl ether. MARGD can be polymerised by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to afford well-defined polymers containing a RGD peptide group with controlled molecular weight, low dispersity (Đ < 1.25), and a precise chain end structure. In this study, linear pseudo-first-order kinetics and number average molecular weight dependence on conversion were observed during the RAFT polymerization. Diblock peptide-polymer conjugates were prepared using PMARGD as a macro-chain transfer agent or using MARGD as a monomer, and the resulting diblock conjugates all showed low dispersities. The cytotoxicity study using mouse fibroblast cells (L929) revealed that the bioconjugates are non-toxic up to high concentration. Furthermore, enhanced cell adhesion was observed when the bioconjugates immobilized on the glass slide surfaces. This study provides a novel and efficient strategy to access well-defined peptide-polymer conjugates with diversity for both peptides and polymers.

Preparation of bis-epoxy end capped macromonomers through anionic or RAFT polymerization

Binglun Gao,Lianwei Sun,Xin Chen,Xiaobo Zhai,Junchi Zheng,Xin Ye,Jianmin Lu,Anchao Feng,Liqun Zhang

The focus of this paper is to report the quantitative synthesis of bis-epoxy end functionalized polyisoprene (BETPI) macromonomers by anionic polymerization and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. For anionic polymerization, more stable and sterically hindered living anions polyisoprene (Li + -PIp-Li + ) react with epichlorohydrin (ECH) for the synthesis of well-defined BETPI. For the high-pressure RAFT polymerization, a novel bis-epoxy end functionalized trithiocarbonate (BODAAT) is designed as RAFT agent for the polymerization of isoprene monomer to obtain well-defined BETPI. The functionalities of the resulting BETPI are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), NMR, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Through two polymerization methods, the BETPI with 600–1000 Da of molecular weight and over 75% of epoxy end capping rate is obtained, which can be further utilized as highly reactive liquid macromonomers.

Synthesis and property of EPEG-based polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers via RAFT polymerization

Xiaodong Chen,Xinde Tang,Cuizhen Zhang,Xiao Lu,Haichao Guo,Xuefan Li,Laixue Pang,Yong Yang,Fuying Dong

Polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers (PCEs) with comb-shaped molecular structures have attracted considerable attention in the area of admixtures for construction engineering. However, there are some contradictions in studying the relationship between the molecular structure and property of PCE due to its random structure based on traditional free radical polymerization, which is confused for designing and developing novel PCEs. In this article, a series of reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization-based polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers (RPCs) were prepared by the copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and ethylene-glycol monovinyl polyethylene glycol (EPEG). The chemical structure and composition of RPCs were characterized and their adsorption behavior and dispersion properties were conducted. The results demonstrate that the molecular weights of RPCs do not vary significantly with prolonging reaction time, and the actual monomer ratio in RPCs displays a significant change to the feed one due to the monomer reactivity and conversion at higher reaction temperature, which is different from conventional free radical polymerization. The dispersion and adsorption properties of RPCs to cement were evaluated by slurry fluidity tests and total organic carbon (TOC) experiments. The effect of polymerization temperature and time on the dispersion ability has been systematically studied. The results indicate that the dispersion ability and adsorption capacity of RPCs are closely related to their molecular structures. The dispersion ability of RPCs were enhanced with increasing carboxyl group density in a certain range of monomer molar ratios (≤6:1). This study will provide a new platform for designing and developing high-performance and rational cost-effective superplasticizers with well-defined structure and controlled molecular weight.

Dispersion polymerization of styrene/acrylonitrile in polyether stabilized by macro-RAFT agents

Shixian Zhang,Xinyu Ma,Yujie Zhu,Ruiwei Guo

A series of poly(acrylate polyether)s (RPA) was designed and synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization , which were then used as dispersants for the dispersion copolymerization of styrene/acrylonitrile in polyethers in a semicontinuous approach to prepare graft polyether polyol (POP) with high solid content. The effects of structure, dosage, and feed ratio for macro-RAFT agent RPA on the stability, viscosity, and particle size of POP were examined and discussed. The dispersion polymerization process was also characterized by gradient elution polymer chromatography , and the results indicated that RPA was rapidly consumed and block-type stabilizer formed in the initial stage of polymerization. A portion of RPA added with monomer feeding provided better stability for the semicontinuous polymerization process.

Photoinitiated RAFT Dispersion Polymerization: A Straightforward Approach toward Highly Monodisperse Functional Microspheres

Jianbo Tan,Xin Rao,Xionghao Wu,Hancheng Deng,Jianwen Yang,Zhaohua Zeng

A straightforward dispersion polymerization procedure for the synthesis of monodisperse functional polymeric microspheres is proposed in this article. This method overcomes the problems deriving from the highly sensitive nucleation stage by introducing both photoinitiation and a RAFT chain transfer agent to the reaction. The process of the formation and growth of particles in the procedure was investigated and found to be quite different from that in a traditional dispersion polymerization. Various kinds of PMMA-based functional microspheres with high size uniformity were synthesized in a single step by this strategy. The microspheres remained uniform in size, even at concentrations of cross-linker or functional comonomer up to 10 wt %.
