It is believed that the construction of a well-hybridized and nanoscale SnS 2 -rGO interconnection would make Li + diffusion distance shorter, cycle performance stable and high-rate property remarkable application in the LIBs anodes. Here, a novel SnS 2 /rGO aerogel with ultrathin SnS 2 nanosheets, well-hybridized networks, and desirable covalent-bonded interconnection was successfully prepared by a modified one-step hydrothermal method. The aerogels were used for anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), and exhibited a remarkable electrochemical performance, including an ultra-high initial specific capacity (1682 mAh g −1 ), excellent rate performance (474 mAh g −1 at the rate of 10 A g −1 ), and perfect cycle stability (1388.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 ), superior to those of previous reports. It is obvious that the aerogel’s well-hybridized and covalent-bonded networks, super stable and intact structure, and improved electron conductivity would play a very important role during charging/discharging of the improved Li + transportation. Therefore, the SnS 2 /rGO aerogel materials created by us would be a very promising candidate for future advanced lithium-storage-type power sources.

Carbon cloth-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials have been widely studied due to their advantages of light weight, flexibility and high strength. At present, researchers widely use chemical in-situ growth method to construct secondary components on the surface of fibers to adjust the EMW absorption properties of carbon cloth (CC). However, there is still a lack of theoretical support behind this behavior. Herein, SnO 2 @SnS 2 was used as the secondary component, and SnO 2 @SnS 2 was constructed on the surface of CC by physical mixing (PM) and chemical in-situ (IS) growth, and the influence of the interface construction method on the microwave absorption performance of CC composites was studied. It is found that compared with SnO 2 @SnS 2 /CC-PM, SnO 2 @SnS 2 /CC-IS can more effectively adjust electromagnetic parameters, enhance multiple polarization, and enhance EMW loss. This can be attributed to the fact that the heterointerface between the secondary component constructed by chemical in-situ growth and the CC (SnO 2 @SnS 2 /CC) contributes much more to the EMW absorption than the intrinsic heterostructure in the secondary component (SnO 2 /SnS 2 ). It is proved that chemical in-situ growth is a more effective strategy to construct high-performance EMW absorbing materials. Provide research theoretical support for the development of high-performance CC composites.

Metallic sulfides are currently considered as ideal anode materials for potassium-ion batteries by virtue of their high specific capacities. However, their low intrinsic electronic conductivity, large volume variation and dissolution of polysulfides in electrochemical reactions hinder their further development toward practical applications. Here, we propose an effective structural design strategy by encapsulating CoS 2 /SnS 2 in sulfur-doped carbon layers, in which internal voids are created to relieve the strain in the CoS 2 /SnS 2 core, while the sulfur-doped carbon layer serves to improve the electron transport and inhibit the dissolution of polysulfides. These features enable the as-designed anode to deliver a high specific capacity (520 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), a high rate capability (185 mA h g −1 at 10 A/g) and lifespan (0.016 % capacity loss per cycle up to 1500 cycles). Our comprehensive electrochemical characterization reveals that the heterostructure of CoS 2 /SnS 2 not only promotes charge transfer at its interfaces, but also enhances the rate of K + diffusion. Additionally, potassium-ion capacitors based on this novel anode are able to attain an energy density up to 162 Wh kg −1 and ∼ 96 % capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 10 A/g. The demonstrated design rule combining morphological and structural engineering strategies sheds light on the development of advanced electrodes for high performance potassium-based energy storage devices.

Improving the zero-bias photocurrent density of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) photodetector boosts its responsivity and aids in developing portable, low-energy-consumption devices. Constructing a high-quality heterojunction facilitates the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, playing a crucial role in enhancing photocurrent density. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) heterojunction of t-Se-coated SnS2 nanoflower arrays was successfully constructed via a simple hydrothermal approach followed by electrochemical deposition. When serving as a photoelectrode for the PEC photodetector, it significantly boosts the photocurrent density and the responsivity. Under white light illumination (258.0 mW/cm2), the photocurrent density achieves 1 mA/cm2, which is 13.3 times and 200 times that achieved when individual t-Se films and SnS2 nanosheet arrays were employed, respectively. At the optimal response wavelengths (400 nm for SnS2 and 600 nm for t-Se), the responsivity is enhanced by factors of 6.3 and 65.7. A broadband (400∼900 nm) and rapid photoresponse is demonstrated, with the response time less than 40 ms. Type II energy band alignment between SnS2 and t-Se, along with the unique morphology of the 3D heterojunction, significantly contributes to the enhanced performance of the device.

Abstract Tin-based sulfides have attracted considerable interest because of their distinctive electronic structures and promising optoelectronic, photovoltaic, electrochemical, and photocatalytic properties. However, the phase-controlled synthesis of tin sulfides remains challenging because competing Sn−S phases can readily form during growth. In addition, the thermodynamic and kinetic factors governing phase evolution among tin sulfides are still not fully understood, which limits rational phase engineering and device-oriented optimization. Here, we report a facile chemical vapor deposition strategy using fluorine-doped tin oxide as an in situ tin source for the controllable growth of large-area SnS2 nanosheet arrays and Sn2S3 nanostructures. By tuning the growth temperature, sulfur precursor dosage, and reaction duration, SnS2 nanosheets can be transformed into Sn2S3 under sulfur-deficient, high-temperature conditions. The optimized window for pure Sn2S3 formation is 525 °C, 50 mg sulfur precursor, and 10 min growth duration, under sulfur-deficient Ar/H2 atmosphere. Comprehensive structural and chemical characterizations, together with Gibbs free-energy analysis and density functional theory calculations, suggest that sulfur vacancies play a key role in weakening Sn−S bonding and promoting lattice reconstruction. These results provide an experimentally accessible route for the phase-controlled synthesis of tin sulfides and offer mechanistic insight into vacancy-mediated phase transformation in two-dimensional metal chalcogenides.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising materials for photodetection owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. However, solution-processed CsPbBr3 QD films suffer from severe carrier recombination losses and inefficient charge transport. Herein, we address these challenges through rational design of Type-II CsPbBr3/SnS2 nanohybrid heterostructures, where SnS2 nanoparticles serve as electron transport pathways. Systematic characterization reveals that the interfacial energy band alignment enables fast charge separation while suppressing radiative recombination compared to pristine CsPbBr3 QDs. Based on these advantages of the CsPbBr3/SnS2 heterostructure, we demonstrate a self-powered UV photodetector exhibiting high sensitivity with a detectable threshold as low as 0.06 mW cm−2 at zero bias. The optimized device exhibits a high responsivity of 142.5 mA W−1, a remarkable specific detectivity of 1.13 × 1013 Jones, an ultrafast response time of 4 ms and a linear dynamic range of 84.4 dB. The device also exhibits an ultralow dark current in the order of 10−11 A, enabling a light-to-dark current ratio of up to 16 522. These parameters surpass those of most previously reported perovskite QD-based photodetectors. This work provides a viable strategy for engineering perovskite heterostructures toward high-performance optoelectronics, particularly for UV monitoring and industrial process control systems requiring zero-power operation.

The efficient capture and storage of radioactive gaseous iodine represents a crucial component in the development of nuclear energy. In this work, an electrospun silica (SiO2) fiber membrane composed of nanofibers with diameters in the range of 200–500 nm was utilized as the substrate. By adopting a construction method reminiscent of “reinforced concrete”, a self-supporting three-dimensional nanofiber aerogel structure with adjustable dimensions was fabricated. Subsequently, ultrathin tin sulfide (SnS2) nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 10 nm were in situ grown on the aerogel. Eventually, a tin sulfide/silica aerogel (SnS2/SiO2 aerogel, SnS2/SiOA) that can be used for the capture of gaseous iodine was obtained. The experimental results suggest that SnS2/SiOA-2 demonstrates high-performance adsorption both under dynamic conditions (1560 mg/g) and static conditions (1760 mg/g). During the capture process, the abundant adsorption active sites conferred by the three-dimensional porous fiber aerogel structure come into play. This allows for full and effective contact between SnS2 and iodine (I2). I2 acquires the electrons released by S2– and is converted into SnI4, which is stably stored within the adsorbent. Notably, the iodine loss of SnS2/SiOA-2 is merely 3% after it has captured iodine and been left standing for 7 days. The construction of this nanofiber aerogel has successfully transformed the nanofiber membrane from a two-dimensional structure into a three-dimensional one, endowing it with excellent iodine capture and storage capabilities. This not only provides an innovative approach to capturing radioactive gaseous iodine but also holds greater application potential under actual working conditions.

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Efficient degradation of uranium(VI) (U(VI)) in wastewater is an urgent problem because of the chemical toxicity and radiotoxicity. In this study, the Ag x –SnS 2 photocatalysts were compounded by a simple hydrothermal method, effectively removing U(VI) under visible light in water. Compared with SnS 2 , the results indicated that Ag x –SnS 2 would decrease the crystallinity without destroying the crystal structure. Moreover, it has excellent photocatalytic performance on the degradation rate of U(VI). Ag 0.5 –SnS 2 exhibited a prominent photocatalytic reduction efficiency of UO 2 2+ of about 86.4% under optical light for 75 min. This was attributed to Ag-doped catalysts, which can narrow the band gap and enhance absorption in visible light. Meanwhile, the doping of Ag promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers, so that more photogenerated charges participated in the photocatalytic reaction. The stability and reusability were verified by the cycle test and the potential photocatalytic mechanism was analyzed based on the experiment. Ag x –SnS 2 material was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. Ag-doped SnS 2 has excellent optical adsorption capacity and a narrow band gap. Ag x –SnS 2 showed good performance in the photocatalytic reduction of UO 2 2+ . The mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) by Ag x –SnS 2 was proposed.

We demonstrated the controlled growth of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) nanoflakes with stacked monolayer atomic steps. The morphology was similar to flat-topped and step-sided mesa plateaus or step pyramids. The SnS 2 nanoflakes were grown on mica substrates via an atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition process using tin monosulfide and sulfur powder as precursors. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), electron microscopy, and Raman characterizations were performed to investigate the structural features, and a sequential layer-wise epitaxial growth mechanism was revealed. In addition, systematic Raman characterizations were performed on individual SnS 2 nanoflakes with a wide range of thicknesses (1–100 nm), indicating that the A 1g peak intensity and Raman shifts were closely related to the thickness of the SnS 2 nanoflakes. Moreover, photoconductive AFM was performed on the monolayer-stepped SnS 2 nanoflakes, revealing that the flat surface and the edges of the SnS 2 atomic steps had different electrical conductive properties and photoconductive behaviors. This is ascribed to the dangling bonds and defects at the atomic step edges, which caused a height difference of the Schottky barriers formed at the interfaces between the PtIr-coated AFM tip and the step edges or the flat surface of the SnS 2 nanoflakes. The 2D SnS 2 crystals with regular monolayer atomic steps and fast photoresponsivity are promising for novel applications in photodetectors and integrated optoelectronic circuits.

Abstract Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted significant attention with respect to renewable energy power generation systems because of the abundant reserves of sodium on earth. However, anode materials are presently limited by low energy density, poor rate performance and inferior cycling stability. In recent years, tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) with a particular layered structure has been considered as a promising anode material for SIBs due to its high theoretical capacity and low cost. Herein, a nervous-system-like structured SnS 2 /CNTs composite was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The SnS 2 sheets were strung with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form a hierarchical porous structure, which is effective for electrolyte diffusion and electronic transmission. The large distance of the (001) plane (0.5899 nm) of SnS 2 favors Na + insertion–extraction dynamics. Benefitting from these structural characteristics, SnS 2 /CNTs electrodes exhibit high specific capacity, excellent rate performance and superior cycling stability. A high charge capacity of 642 mAh·g −1 was released at 0.2 A·g −1 , and then, a high reversible capacity of 427 mAh·g −1 was retained after 100 cycles. Even charged at 2 A·g −1 , the SnS 2 /CNTs electrode maintained a capacity of 282 mAh·g −1 . The nervous-system-like structure of the SnS 2 /CNTs composite provides a novel strategy for the development of SIBs with high electrochemical performance. Graphic abstract

The efficient monitoring of toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) reveals a great practical significance in terms of environmental protection and human health. Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) has recently presented bright application prospects for the NO 2 detection owing to its unique physiochemical properties. Unfortunately, the pristine SnS 2 -based gas sensor suffers from inferior selectivity to NO 2 since the emerging cross-response over interfering gases (especially to NH 3 ) at room temperature. Herein, a room-temperature-operated gas-sensitive device based on Au nanoparticles decorated SnS 2 nanosheet was proposed for the highly selective detection towards NO 2 by exploiting visible-light modulation. Benefited from the electronic sensitization and chemical sensitization of Au nanoparticles, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor presented a visibly enhanced response toward 1 ppm NO 2 compared with pristine SnS 2 gas sensor, while its selectivity to NO 2 over NH 3 only increased by 35%. Further, through effectively modulating the adsorption and reaction behavior of gas molecules by introducing visible-light excitation, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor manifested an excellent selectivity with 130% gain in detecting 1 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, endowed the robust repeatability and reliable long-term stability. This work thus demonstrates that the visible-light modulation can serve as a promising technique for exploiting highly selective gas-sensitive devices operating at room temperature.

Layered materials have been investigated in many different catalytic reactions due to their excellent functionalities. In particular, understanding the anisotropic properties of layered materials is important for the design of more efficient catalysts. Herein, SnS 2 nanoflakes with abundant edge sites (E-SnS 2 ) were synthesized and their catalytic properties towards the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) were studied. Combining experimental data and computational analysis, we found that the edge sites of SnS 2 are more active for CO 2 to formate conversion compared with the basal sites. Moreover, a CO 2 reduction intermediates triggered activation mechanism at the edge sites is proposed, the formation of sulfur vacancies at the edges would generate more active sites for CO 2 RR. The as-synthesized E-SnS 2 shows high selectivity, activity and robust stability for at least 12 h in a flow cell under a current density of − 200 mA·cm -2 . This work may provide a new perspective on rational catalyst design for CO 2 RR.
