Tandem Acidic CO2 Electrolysis Coupled with Syngas Fermentation: A Two-Stage Process for Producing Medium-Chain Fatty Acids

Ying Pu,Yue Wang,Gaoying Wu,Xiaobing Wu,Yilin Lu,Yangyang Yu,Na Chu,Xiaohong He,Daping Li,Raymond Jianxiong Zeng,Yong Jiang

The tandem application of CO2 electrolysis with syngas fermentation holds promise for achieving heightened production rates and improved product quality. However, the significant impact of syngas composition on mixed culture-based microbial chain elongation remains unclear. Additionally, effective methods for generating syngas with an adjustable composition from acidic CO2 electrolysis are currently lacking. This study successfully demonstrated the production of medium-chain fatty acids from CO2 through tandem acidic electrolysis with syngas fermentation. CO could serve as the sole energy source or as the electron donor (when cofed with acetate) for caproate generation. Furthermore, the results of gas diffusion electrode structure engineering highlighted that the use of carbon black, either alone or in combination with graphite, enabled consistent syngas generation with an adjustable composition from acidic CO2 electrolysis (pH 1). The carbon black layer significantly improved the CO selectivity, increasing from 0% to 43.5% (0.05 M K+) and further to 92.4% (0.5 M K+). This enhancement in performance was attributed to the promotion of K+ accumulation, stabilizing catalytically active sites, rather than creating a localized alkaline environment for CO2-to-CO conversion. This research contributes to the advancement of hybrid technology for sustainable CO2 reduction and chemical production.

Synergy induced by physical mixing m-ZrO2 and α-Ga2O3 for effective conversion of syngas to light olefins

Peng Zhang,Fangfang Li,Xuefang Yao,Pengze Zhang,Yukai Wu,Mengmeng Xi,Fanhui Meng,Lihua Kang,Mingyuan Zhu

The GaZrO x solid solution has been recently employed in OX-ZEO bifunctional catalysts for efficient conversion of syngas to light olefins, but it remains challenging to identify the specific contributions of Zr and Ga and to understand the detailed reaction mechanisms due to the structural complexity. To address this complexity and elucidate the active sites over the Zr-Ga oxide system, this study presents a catalyst designed by physical mixing ZrO 2 with different crystalline phases ( m -ZrO 2 & t -ZrO 2 ) and α -Ga 2 O 3 . The physical mixture of m -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 achieves a high CO conversion of 39.1 %, with light olefins selectivity of 87.3% among hydrocarbons after combined with SAPO-34, surpassing the performance of physical mixture of t -ZrO 2 and/or α -Ga 2 O 3 with SAPO-34. Combining the various characterizations and DFT calculations, we have confirmed that m -ZrO 2 site, enriched with oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, is essential for CO adsorption and HCOO* intermediate formation, while the α -Ga 2 O 3 site plays a key role in the dissociation of H 2 . Furthermore, the electron transfer from m -ZrO 2 to α -Ga 2 O 3 in their mixture is more efficient than in a physically mixed t -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 . This accelerates the H 2 dissociation and boosts the spillover of hydrogen from α -Ga 2 O 3 to m -ZrO 2 , leading to the formation of more CH 3 O* intermediates and higher light olefins yield when combined with SAPO-34.

Investigation on hydrogen-rich syngas production from catalytic co-pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and waste paper blends

Chao Wang,Zhiqiang Jiang,Qingbin Song,Mingzheng Liao,Jiahong Weng,Rui Gao,Ming Zhao,Ying Chen,Guanyi Chen

Urgent need for waste disposal and renewable energy have opened up promising pathways for renewable and sustainable fuel production to substitute traditional fossil fuels. In this study, catalytic co-pyrolysis of waste paper (WP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as typical municipal solid wastes was experimentally investigated towards hydrogen-rich syngas production . Results indicated the maximum H 2 yield (429 μmol·g cat −1 ·min −1 ) was obtained with 60% PVC weight ratio under 900 °C which was higher than single component pyrolysis . Higher hydrogen yield (681.76 μmol·g cat −1 ·min −1 ) appeared over Fe/CeO 2 –CaO under the optimal conditions compared to that of Ru/ZSM-5-CaO (445.54 μmol·g cat −1 ·min −1 ). From the calculated non-isothermal kinetic parameters , both catalysts could reduce activation energies. Proper porous structure and CaO content in the catalyst could enhance hydrogen production via carbon species fixation.

Catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil for hydrogen-rich syngas production over bimetallic Fe-Ru/ZSM-5 catalyst

Liujie Xu,Yi Li,Mingzheng Liao,Qingbin Song,Chao Wang,Jiahong Weng,Ming Zhao,Ningbo Gao

Waste cooking oil (WCO) energy development offers an effective method for producing renewable fuels , enabling simultaneous resource recovery and pollution reduction. This study aims to develop a novel bimetallic Fe(Ni)-Ru/ZSM-5 catalyst toward H 2 -rich syngas production from WCO. The results show that Fe-Ru/ZSM-5 produced a higher maximum H 2 yield (84.05 μmol·g cat. −1 ·s −1 ) than did Ni-Ru/ZSM-5 (41.76 μmol·g cat. −1 ·s −1 ) when fed at a 50 L/min rate at an optimal temperature of 700 °C. Fe-Ru/ZSM-5 presented a more prolific microporous distribution, whose structure contributes to the diffusion of the short-chain hydrocarbon intermediate reactants to enhance hydrogen production . Fe(III) can help to improve the conversion ratio of benzene and the anti‑carbon deposition capability of the catalyst. The dealumination and oxidation decreases the stability of the catalyst and may lead to inactivation. Furthermore, this study discusses the mechanism of bimetallic-loaded catalysts combining noble metals with transition metals in WCO pyrolysis . The results point to effective new approaches to increase H 2 production through the catalytic pyrolysis of WCO.

Chemical looping steam reforming of bio-oil for hydrogen-rich syngas production: Effect of doping on LaNi0.8Fe0.2O3 perovskite

Chenlong Liu,Dong Chen,Jangam Ashok,Plaifa Hongmanorom,Wenju Wang,Tianle Li,Zhigang Wang,Sibudjing Kawi

Chemical looping steam reforming of bio-oil is novel conversion technology utilizing waste energy, which is an advantage to reduce cost and improve environmental. However, complex reaction process between oxygen carrier and bio-oil constrain its development. In this study, perovskite based La 0.8 M 0.2 Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3 (M = Ca, Ce and Zr) were investigated as an oxygen carrier for chemical looping steam reforming of bio-oil model reaction. The perovskites were prepared via sol-gel method and the effect of doping for reforming of acetic acid as bio-oil model compound is also investigated. Among all the perovskite tested, Ce doped La 0.8 Ce 0.2 Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3 oxygen carrier gave superior and stable catalytic performance for 1440 min at 600 °C and steam/carbon mole ratio (S/C = 2). The fresh and spent oxygen carriers were characterized using XRD , H 2 -TPR, CO 2 -TPD, TG-DTG, Dielectric constant , Raman, XPS and XANES . Doping with base metal generally, improved coke resistance ability of the perovskite. CO 2 -TPD and XPS analysis reveal that the highest carbon resistance for La 0.8 Ce 0.2 Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3 perovskite is due to enhanced stronger surface basicity and oxygen adsorption. From DFT simulation and Dielectric constant results, the better activity for La 0.8 Ce 0.2 Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3 is attributed to its adsorption ability of reactants, oxygen and electron transfer from sub-surface to surface of the perovskite.

Biomass to hydrogen-rich syngas via tar removal from steam gasification with La1-XCeXFeO3/dolomite as a catalyst

Jun Zhang,Yonghong Niu

Biomass gasification produces hydrogen , which is a clean and promising technology. One of the most important aspects of the biomass gasification process is choosing the right catalyst. In this study, 10% La 1-X Ce X FeO 3 /Dolomite (X = 0,0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8) synthesized using the sol-gel method was used as a catalyst in biomass gasification for the production of hydrogen-rich syngas . Gasification tests were carried out in a fixed bed reactor . The effects of an elemental substitution in LaFeO 3 , temperature on the product were examined. Ce-substitution boosted the activity of LaFeO 3 /DOL according to the data. Among the prepared catalysts, La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3 /DOL performed the best, yielding a greater H 2 production and tar with a higher naphthalene concentration. As the temperature rises, so does the H 2 yield, at 850 °C, the highest H 2 yield is 0.69Nm 3 /Kg. Furthermore, the aromatization of phenols in tar is more likely to occur at high temperatures.

Trivalent cation (Al, Ga, In) modulation of LDH-derived Cu-Co catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas

Xiudong Zhu,Wei Guo,Zhang Wei,Zhe Sheng,Xiongchao Lin,Deping Xu,Yonggang Wang

M 3+ controls phase evolution: Al/Ga form Cu-Co alloy; In 3+ leads to CuIn, CoIn 2 , In 2 O 3 separation. • Surface hydroxyls and bridged CO provide dual CHₓ sources for C 2+ OH formation. • Medium-strength basic sites and Cu + fraction, not total basicity, govern C 2+ OH selectivity. • Smaller M 3+ radius (Al 3+ ) strengthens metal-support interaction, enhancing dispersion and performance. The modulation of trivalent cations in layered double hydroxide (LDH)-derived catalysts provides an effective strategy for tuning the multifunctional active sites for higher alcohol synthesis. In this study, a series of layered CuCoM catalysts (M = Al, Ga, In) was synthesized via alkaline co-precipitation and evaluated for higher alcohols synthesis via CO hydrogenation. The results demonstrate that the introduction of M 3 + is essential for constructing the LDH precursor structure and significantly influences the phase evolution, morphology, textural properties, reducibility, surface basicity, and chemical states of the catalysts. Among the catalysts tested, CuCoAl exhibited the best overall performance, achieving a CO conversion of 35.60%, an ethanol selectivity of 39.97%, and a C 2 + alcohols selectivity of 73.47%. Structural characterization revealed that CuCoAl had the highest specific surface area and the most uniform dispersion of Cu and Co species, which favored the exposure of accessible active sites. CO 2 -TPD, XPS, and in situ DRIFTS results further indicated that CuCoAl contained abundant surface hydroxyl groups and a higher fraction of Cu + , which promoted the formation of formate species, facilitated non-dissociative CO insertion, and enhanced CH x generation through both formate hydrogenation and bridged CO dissociation on Co sites. The superior catalytic performance of CuCoAl is thus attributed to the synergistic effect of highly dispersed Cu-Co active sites, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and optimized Cu + /Co interfacial functionalities. This study provides mechanistic insights into trivalent-cation regulation in LDH-derived CuCo catalysts and offers a rational strategy for the design of efficient catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas. Orbital Interactions in Co1-N-Ga1 Atomic Pairs Tailor Syngas Composition from CO2 Electroreduction for Downstream Upgrading Synthesis

Chentao Wang,Jiaxin Ben,Ning Cao,Bing Huang,Mi Yan,Pengfei Xie

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) for syngas production (mixture of H2 and CO) driven by renewable energy is a critical strategy to reduce carbon emission and for valorization of CO2. However, it remains a major challenge to robustly modulate the H2/CO ratio under the circumstance of voltage fluctuations. Herein, we prepare Co1-N-Ga1 atomic pairs confined in a nitrogen doping carbon substrate. Combined experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the orbital interactions involved in Co1 and Ga1 atomic pairs enable the synchronous optimizations of *COOH formation and splitting to CO, thereby balancing CO2RR and the hydrogen evolution reaction. In the flow cell, the dual-atom catalysts delivered tunable H2/CO ratios (0.5, 1, 2) at >300 mA cm−2 over a wide potential window of –0.6 to –1.1 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode). Furthermore, in a membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer of 100 cm2, the optimal catalyst maintains the desired H2/CO ratios at 30 A total current with a syngas productivity of 12.4 L h−1. Built on this, a tandem process involving electrocatalysis and thermocatalysis delivers the upgrading synthesis of methanol, ethanol, and acetic acid with corresponding selectivities of 86.7, 82.1, and 79.5%, respectively.

Reversible exsolution of iron from perovskites for highly selective syngas production via chemical looping dry reforming of methane

Tianlong Yang,Jinrui Zhang,Qiong Rao,Zhongrui Gai,Yang Li,Peng Li,Mingkai Liu,Ying Pan,Hongguang Jin

The chemical looping dry reforming of methane reaction (CL-DRM) has attracted attention for its ability to reduce carbon emissions by converting two greenhouse gases (methane and carbon dioxide) into syngas. However, the major barrier against the CL-DRM application is lack of highly selective and stable oxygen carriers. We report a method to obtain high syngas selectivity by modulating the ability of oxygen carriers to react with methane in CL-DRM. Here, we investigate the redox reactivity of different elements doped La m Sr 1- m Fe n Al 1- n O 3 ( m  = 0.6, 1; n  = 0.8, 1) oxygen carriers for the CL-DRM. It is found that the two doped with Al at the B-site perovskites have better reactivity due to the exsolution of Fe nanoparticles which promotes the reduction reaction between the parent perovskites and methane. Different parent perovskite affects the strength of the exsolved Fe, which consequently influences its reactivity with methane. The experimental results show that up to 5.76 mmol/g syngas yield and nearly 100 % CO selectivity are achieved in 20 redox reactions of LaFe 0.8 Al 0.2 O 3 oxygen carriers. Simultaneously the exsolved Fe is re-dispersed into the perovskites through a CO 2 oxidation reaction, which also achieves the regeneration of the oxygen carrier. By tuning the composition of the perovskite and the exsolve Fe through the exsolution system, the synergistic effect between the metal and the parent perovskite can be exploited to improve the methane reactivity. These insights offer valuable guidance for the design of efficient oxygen carriers for CL-DRM.

Modified Metal-Doped Fe-Al Catalysts for H2-Rich Syngas Production from Microwave-Assisted Gasification of HDPE Plastic

Jingmo Zhou,Chaoyue Liu,Wenke Zhao,Faizan Ahmad,Yaning Zhang

This study pioneers the application of metal-doped Fe-Al as multifunctional redox catalysts for tunable syngas production from plastics via a microwave-assisted process (CLG). We rationally designed a series of redox catalysts (Ni, Ca, Ce, Sr, Co) to unlock efficient H2-rich syngas production from (high-density polyethylene) HDPE. A class of metal-doping (Ni, Ca, Ce, Sr, and Co) Fe-Al redox catalysts was engineered, with Ni-doped Fe-Al (Ni-Fe-Al) exhibiting the excellent H2-rich syngas production (75.32 mmol/gHDPE syngas, 47.09 mmol/gHDPE H2). This is attributed to the improved redox activity, which facilitates efficient lattice oxygen transfer and catalytic reforming reactions, alongside improved microwave absorption and a porous structure that promotes reactant access. This strategic material design, coupled with process parameter optimization (800 W, redox catalyst/plastic = 2.0), developed a highly efficient HDPE-to-syngas conversion system. The process produced a high-quality syngas (90.03% H2+ CO, H2/CO ratio = 2.27) with a rapid heating rate (233.0 °C/min) and minimal energy input (3.52 kWh/molgas). This work provides not just an effective upcycling route for plastics, but a fundamental blueprint for designing advanced redox catalysts to unlock the full potential of microwave-CLG.

Efficient Ni/CaCeOx dual-functional materials for integrated CO2 capture and dry reforming of methane for syngas production

Qi Zhang,Fangshu He,Qiang Hu,Guang Yang,Yingquan Chen,Haiping Yang,Yang Yang

Ni/CaCeO x achieves efficient integrated CO 2 capture and dry reforming of methane. • CeO 2 reduces the CO 2 capture temperature and facilitates its conversion at 600 °C. • Ni/Ca 0.6 Ce 0.4 O x -R demonstrated an H 2 yield of 63.67 mmol/g DFMs and a CO 2 conversion exceeding 95% at 600 °C. • Reverse Boudouard reaction plays a critical role in facilitating CO 2 conversion. Integrated CO 2 capture and conversion (ICCC) using CaO based adsorbents is a promising method for industrial carbon reduction, but its application is constrained by challenges such as high operating temperatures, CaO sintering, carbon deposition on Ni sites. In this work, CeO 2 was introduced into Ni/CaO to synthesize Ni/CaCeO x dual-functional materials (DFMs) with regulated oxygen vacancies. By tailoring the morphology of CeO 2 the oxygen vacancy concentration and capture-conversion performance were effectively tuned. The incorporation of CeO 2 significantly promoted low-temperature CO 2 uptake and reduced the activation energy of dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction, lowing the operating temperature by more than 50 °C compared to previously reported ICCC-DRM studies. Among the prepared materials, the CeO 2 -introducted and reduced Ni/Ca 0.6 Ce 0.4 O x -R catalyst showed the best performance, reducing the CO 2 uptake temperature from the theoretical 600 °C to 410 °C. Under isothermal ICCC conditions at 600 °C, it achieves H 2 and CO production rates of 63.65 mmol/g DFMs and 56.74 mmol/g DFMs , respectively, while carbon elimination reached 35.06 mmol/g DFMs . Notably, the DFM exhibits excellent cycling stability, with only 10.08% loss in H 2 yield and 8.40% loss CO 2 conversion after 10 cycles. This work demonstrates that oxygen-vacancy control by CeO 2 modification is an effective route to improve the efficiency and stability of CO 2 capture and conversion. Engineering solid-waste-derived Ca-Fe dual functional sorbents-catalysts for integrated CO2 capture and conversion to syngas

Iwei Wang,Hailiang Nie,Yongliang Yan,Manyi Cai,Hui Zhou,Yongqing Xu,Yi Xing,Hongzhi Ma

Reconstructing dual functional materials (DFMs) from industrial waste such as steel slag offers a sustainable approach to mitigate environmental pollution while valorizing hazardous byproducts. Although the steel slag is rich in calcium and iron, its direct use is hindered by the formation of inactive solid solutions (e.g., Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 , Ca 2 SiO 4 ), limiting CO 2 capture and conversion performance. In this study, we reconstruct steel slag into a high-performance DFM composed of CaO (adsorptive phase) and FeOx (catalytic phase) for integrated CO 2 capture and utilization (ICCU). The optimized DFM achieves a CO 2 uptake of 9.15 mmol g −1 , a CO yield of 7.80 mmol g −1 , 87 % CO 2 conversion, and 100 % CO selectivity at 650 °C, substantially outperforming the raw slag. Moreover, the DFM maintains outstanding cyclic stability over 10 cycles, with CO 2 uptake ranging from 8.25 to 10.38 mmol g −1 and CO yield from 6.90 to 8.25 mmol g −1 . In-situ XRD and DRIFTS analyses reveal a dual Fe-phase looping mechanism (Fe/FeO and Fe/Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 ), and a formate-mediated hydrogenation pathway during in-situ CO 2 conversion. This work highlights the untapped potential of industrial waste for developing efficient, sustainable materials for integrated CO 2 capture and utilization.
