Ti3C2 MXene nanosheet-based capacitance immunoassay with tyramine-enzyme repeats to detect prostate-specific antigen on interdigitated micro-comb electrode

Jialun Chen,Ping Tong,Lingting Huang,Zhonghua Yu,Dianping Tang

An interdigitated capacitance immunosensing system based enzymatic biocatalytic precipitation on micro-comb electrode was designed for the sensitive detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) by coupling Ti 3 C 2 MXenes with tyramine signal amplification strategy. The immunosensor was prepared by immobilizing anti-PSA capture antibody on MXenes-coated interdigitated electrode, whereas gold nanoparticles heavily functionalized with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and detection antibody were utilized as the signal-transducer tags. Introduction of interdigitated electrode was expected to enhance the sensitivity of capacitance immunosensor. This system mainly consisted of the sandwich-type immunoreaction, formation of tyramine-HRP repeats on gold nanoparticle and enzymatic biocatalytic precipitation. The concatenated HRP through the tyramine oxidized numerous 4-chloro-1-naphthol molecules into insoluble benzo-4-chlorohexadienone with the help of H 2 O 2 , and coated the modified immunosensor to keep free ions away from the electrode, thus causing the local alteration in the capacitance. Under optimum conditions, the change of the immunosensor in the capacitance increased with the increasing target PSA concentrations from 0.1 ng mL −1 to 50 ng mL −1 at a detection limit of 0.031 ng mL −1 . Moreover, the interdigitated capacitance immunosensor showed good reproducibility, high specificity and acceptable accuracy for the analysis of human serum specimens in comparison with those obtained from commercial human PSA ELISA kit. Importantly, Ti 3 C 2 MXenes-based interdigitated capacitance transducer open new opportunities for protein diagnostics and biosecurity.

Hairpin-aptamer Conformational Switching Assisted Dual-signal Ratiometric Detection of Aflatoxin B1 Based on Liquid Exfoliated Graphene/Ti3C2 MXene Nanocomposite

Fang Li,Panpan Dong,Zijian Wu,Lu Xue,Mingming Luo,Yijun Tan,Haitao Li,Xu Yang

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a highly toxic mycotoxin and widely distributed in food matrixes, posing a serious threat to human health. In this work, a novel sensing platform based on liquid exfoliated graphene/Ti 3 C 2 MXene (LEG/Ti 3 C 2 MXene) nanocomposite was proposed to achieve ultrasensitive detection of trace AFB1 in response to the urgent issue, in which the LEG/Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanocomposites modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode acted as transducer, ferrocene (Fc) labeled aptamer (Fc-Apt) and methylene blue (MB) labeled complementary DNA (MB-cDNA) functioned as dual-signal probes, and the conformational change of hairpin-aptamer was regarded as signal “on-off” switch. The irregular Ti 3 C 2 MXene flakes interspersed between LEG sheets layer provided assistance in enhancing sensing performance, specifically, it not only effectively reduced the self-stacking and increased the specific surface area, but also provided multiple interlayer spacing to improve electron transfer efficiency. In the presence of AFB1, its competition with MB-cDNA led to the reappear of hairpin structure for Fc-Apt and the releasing of MB-cDNA, resulting in the removal of MB and fixing Fc close to the electrode surface. As a result, the peak current ratio of Fc to MB (I Fc to I MB ) would change accordingly, which served as the basis for qualitative analysis of AFB1. Under the optimal conditions, the constructed aptasensor exhibited excellent sensitivity with a wide linear range from 0.0001 to 100 ng/mL and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.041 pg/mL, as well as satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, revealing its promising potential applications in food safety monitoring.

Liquid exfoliated graphene@Ti3C2 MXene based dual-signal aptasensing interface for Cd2+ and Pb2+ simultaneous detection in water and vegetables

Fang Li,Panpan Dong,Zijian Wu,Lu Xue,Mingming Luo,Yijun Tan

As ubiquitous pollutants, heavy metal ions can accumulate in the food chain, increasing toxicity through synergistic effects and posing health risks to humans and other organisms. In this study, we successfully developed a dual-signal aptasensing interface for simultaneous detection of cadmium ions (Cd2+) and lead ions (Pb2+). The 2D layered Ti3C2 MXene and liquid exfoliated graphene (LEG) composite nanomaterials were employed as ITO electrode modification materials, which exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties. The Cd2+-specific aptamer labeled with Nile blue and Pb2+-specific aptamer labeled with ferrocene bind to their complementary strands immobilized on the electrode surface, resulting in a dual-signal interface. In the presence of target ions, the aptamers specifically recognized and captured the targets, subsequently detaching from the electrode surface, leading to changes in the dual-signals and thereby enabling simultaneous detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+. The limits of detection for Cd2+ and Pb2+ were determined to be 0.689 pM and 1.548 pM, with linear response ranges of 0.1 pM to 10 μM and 0.01 pM to 10 μM. The effectiveness of the proposed aptasensor in determining Cd2+ and Pb2+ simultaneously in water and vegetables has been demonstrated, providing substantial evidence for its potential application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Nitrogen-doped Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots as an effective FRET ratio fluorometric probe for sensitive detection of Cu2+ and D-PA

Xun Zhou,Juerui Zhang,Dongyan Huang,Yinhui Yi,Kechen Wu,Gangbing Zhu

In this work, a ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was established to detect Cu 2+ and D-PA ( d -penicillamine) based on nitrogen-doped Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots ( N -MODs) that was prepared via a simple hydrothermal method and exhibited strong fluorescent and photoluminescence performance as well as excellent stability. Since the oxidation reaction between o -phenylenediamine (OPD) and Cu 2+ induced the formation of 2,3-diaminophenazine (ox-OPD) which not only can emerge an emission peak at 570 nm, but also inhibit the fluorescence intensity of N -MQDs at 450 nm, a ratiometric reverse fluorescence sensor via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was designed to sensitively detect Cu 2+ , where N -MQDs acted as energy donor and ox-OPD as energy acceptor. More importantly, another considerably interesting phenomenon was that their catalytic oxidation reaction can be restrained in the presence of D-PA because of the coordination of Cu 2+ with D-PA, further triggering the obvious changes in ratio fluorescent signal and color, thus a ratiometric fluorescent sensor of determining D-PA was proposed also in this work. After optimizing various conditions, the ratiometric sensing platform showed rather low detection limits for Cu 2+ (3.0 nM) and D-PA (0.115 μM), coupled with excellent sensitivity and stability.

Construction of Ti3C2 MXene based fire resistance nanocoating on flexible polyurethane foam for highly efficient photothermal conversion and solar water desalination

Keqing Zhou,Kaili Gong,Chenchao Wang,Mengqing Zhou,Jun Xiao

In this work, a bilayer nanocoating was constructed on the surface of flexible polyurethane (FPU) foam with Ti 3 C 2 MXene and polyethyleneimine-modified silica nanoparticles (mSiO 2 -NP@PEI) through layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, successfully obtaining modified flexible polyurethane composites (MFPU) with excellent flame retardancy, photothermal conversion and solar water desalination properties. The structure and morphology of MFPU foams were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The MFPU with three coating cycles (MFPU3) had the best flame retardancy and smoke suppression performances, mainly in terms of decreased peak heat release rate (pHRR), peak smoke production rate (pSPR) and total smoke production (TSP) by 71.3 %, 62.1 % and 74.5 %, respectively, compared to those of neat FPU. In addition, MFPU foams exhibited extraordinary light-to-heat conversion and solar water desalination capabilities. MFPU3 could reach 120 °C in 138 s and its steam conversion efficiency η was as high as 89.6 %, which was 116.0 % higher than that of unmodified foam and had a 262.8 % increase over pure water. The flame retardant MFPU foams with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency will exhibit great application potential in solar water desalination and power generation.

Novel Electrochemical Aptasensor Based on Ordered Mesoporous Carbon/2D Ti3C2 MXene as Nanocarrier for Simultaneous Detection of Aminoglycoside Antibiotics in Milk

Fengling Yue,Mengyue Liu,Mengyuan Bai,Mengjiao Hu,Falan Li,Yemin Guo,Igor Vrublevsky,Xia Sun

Herein, a novel electrochemical aptasensor using a broad-spectrum aptamer as a biorecognition element was constructed based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) for simultaneous detection of aminoglycoside antibiotics (AAs). The ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) was firstly modified on 2D Ti3C2MXene. The addition of OMC not only effectively improved the stability of the aptasensor, but also prevented the stacking of Ti3C2sheets, which formed a good current passage for signal amplification. The prepared[email protected]3C2MXene functioned as a nanocarrier to accommodate considerable aptamers. In the presence of AAs, the transport of electron charge on SPCE surface was influenced by the bio-chemical reactions of the aptamer and AAs, generating a significant decline in the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signals. The proposed aptasensor presented a wide linear range and the detection limit was 3.51 nM. Moreover, the aptasensor, with satisfactory stability, reproducibility and specificity, was successfully employed to detect the multi-residuals of AAs in milk. This work provided a novel strategy for monitoring AAs in milk.Keywords:broad-spectrum aptamer;aminoglycoside antibiotics;Ti3C2MXene;ordered mesoporous carbon;electrochemical aptasensor

Hydrothermal growth of ZnCdS/TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the Ti3C2 MXene sheet to enhance photocatalytic performance under visible light

Xiang Qin,Rong Cao,Wensheng Gong,Liping Luo,Guojun Shi,Lijun Ji,Aiping Zhu

ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene composites were prepared by a hydrothermal process to obtain an excellent photocatalyst with photo-corrosion resistant property. Under hydrothermal conditions, the surface of Ti 3 C 2 MXene was wrapped by Na + and ZnCdS nanoparticles , which slowed down the further oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 MXene into TiO 2 and improved the utilization rate of MXene. The adsorption capacity of an optimal ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene composite to methylene blue reached 299.68 mg/g, confirming a higher MXene content was important for photocatalytic degradation of an organic dye. The basal distance of the MXene layers increased from 10.59 Å to 15.21 Å due to the intercalation of ZnCdS, which could facilitate the transportation and adsorption of organic pollutant in ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene. The total removal efficiency was 9.3 times that of ZnCdS in 120 min. When the composites were used for photocatalytic hydrogen production , a relatively higher ZnCdS content was necessary. The hydrogen conversion efficiency of an optimal ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene composite under visible light irradiation reached 8436.58 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 3.3 times that of ZnCdS. The ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene composites showed excellent and stable photocatalytic activity in recycling experiments, confirming their excellent photo-corrosion property. These ZnCdS/TiO 2 /Na-MXene composites showed great potential in the application of photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production, and provided a new way to reduce the oxidation process of Ti 3 C 2 MXene.

An efficient off–on fluorescence probe based on EDA functionalized Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots for sequential detection of Fe3+ and histamine

Tianyao Wang,Wenming Xiong,Xingguo Tian,Xiaoyan Xu

MXene quantum dots (MQDs) exhibit vast application prospection the field of fluorometric sensing, but how to efficiently utilize MQDs for the selective detection of two components still remains a challenge. Herein, an off–on fluorescence sensor based on ethylenediamine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs (EDA-MQDs) was designed to selectively and sequentially detect Fe 3+ and histamine. EDA-MQDs were synthesized using a facile ultrasonic-hydrothermal method and exhibited bright blue fluorescence with a quantum yield up to 21.12 %. Inner filter effect occurred between Fe 3+ and EDA-MQDs, resulting in fluorescence quenching at 460 nm. Meanwhile, on account of the strong chelation between imidazole group on histamine and Fe 3+ , the Fe 3+ concentration in the system was reduced, so the fluorescence of EDA-MQDs was recovered. Thus, the as-designed fluorescence probe was used for dual-detection of Fe 3+ and histamine in real samples with satisfactory sensitivity and selectivity. The proposed sensing method was verified to possess good linear response in the range of 1–100 μM and 1–60 μM with detection limits of 0.11 μM and 46 nM for Fe 3+ and histamine, respectively. This work provided a highly effective tool for selective detecting histamine and Fe 3+ as well as tendered a novel strategy for functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs in food analysis.

Ultrafast activation of peroxymonosulfate by reduction of trace Fe3+ with Ti3C2 MXene under neutral and alkaline conditions: Reducibility and confinement effect

Haoran Song,Daoyuan Zu,Changping Li,Rui Zhou,Yuwei Wang,Wei Zhang,Shiting Pan,Yang Cai,Zhuo Li,Yongming Shen,Jun Ma

Ultrafast activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by reduction of trace Fe 3+ at the μg L -1 level with the ecofriendly Ti 3 C 2 MXene under neutral and alkaline conditions was achieved for the first time. Complete removal of model pollutant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was accomplished within about 5 min and 10 min at pH 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. The degradation rate of SMX in Fe 3+ /PMS/MXene process was increased by 72 times compared with that in the absence of Ti 3 C 2 MXene (pH = 7). Methanol/ tert -butanol quenching experiment and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurement demonstrated that hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 •– ) were the primary reactive species. The strong reducibility of Ti 3 C 2 MXene played the key role in triggering the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and accelerating PMS activation. The reducibility of Ti 3 C 2 MXene towards Fe 3+ was measured to be 3.35:1–5.03:1 (mol:mol), far higher than that of hydroxylamine (1:1). Because the confinement effect of MXene inhibited the hydrolysis of iron ions, Fe 3+ /PMS/MXene process exhibited excellent performance even under neutral and alkaline conditions. This study improved the understanding of MXene in Fenton-like reaction and provided an ideal Fenton-like process with ultra-low metal consumption, high efficiency and broad pH range.

High-throughput screening and spatial profiling of low-mass pesticides using a novel Ti3C2 MXene nanowire (TMN) as MALDI MS matrix

Chunxia Ma,Xiao Wang,Huamin Zhang,Wei Liu,Daijie Wang,Feng Liu,Heng Lu,Luqi Huang

Pesticides play critical roles in agricultural fields; however, pesticide residues can cause serious damage to human health and the ecological environment; therefore, developing a rapid and sensitive method for pesticide detection is urgently needed. Nanostructure-assisted matrix laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) has great potential for the detection of low-mass pesticides. In this study, a novel Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanowire (TMN) was prepared by a facile sol-gel method and served as a matrix to enhance MALDI MS performance in the analysis of pesticides in positive ion mode. The TMN showed superior performance in the high-throughput detection of six kinds of pesticides (organophosphorus, organochlorine , carbamate, neonicotinoids, triazole, and oxadiazines), with ultrahigh sensitivity (detection limits at sub-ppt levels), remarkable repeatability, excellent salt tolerance, and extremely low background compared to traditional organic matrices due to the specific polyaromatic structure and the doping of nitrogen. Furthermore, this matrix was successfully employed for the analysis of residual pesticides in traditional Chinese herbs, and the level of diniconazole was quantified with a linear range of 0–50 ng/mL (R 2  > 0.99). More importantly, the spatial distribution of various endogenous compounds (e.g., amino acids and saccharides, fatty acids, alkaloids, and plant hormones) and xenobiotic pesticides from the intact root of the medicinal plant P. quinquefolium was clearly visualized using the TMN self-assembly film as a matrix for MALDI imaging mass spectrometry (IMS). With superior advantages such as sensitivity, simplicity, rapidness, and minimal sample requirement, TMN as a matrix-assisted MALDI MS shows great promise for various applications.

Dandan Song,Xinyu Jiang,Yanshan Li,Xiong Lu,Sunrui Luan,Yuanzhe Wang,Yan Li,Faming Gao

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) derived from metal − organic frameworks (MOF) combined with two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides possibly pave an innovative pathway for designing promising biosensors. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensing platform has been fabricated for ultra-sensitive determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), based on MOF-derived MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Au NPs composites. Remarkably, the three-dimensional (3D) MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 hierarchical microcuboids derived from Mn-MOF are composed of vertically aligned, highly ordered nanosheets, and further combined with MXene/Au NPs yields synergistic signal amplification effect, with outstanding electrochemical performance, large specific surface area, and good environmental biocompatibility. Under the optimum conditions, the reported sensing platform AChE-Chit/MXene/Au NPs/MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 /GCE can be utilized to detect methamidophos in a broad concentration range (10 −12 –10 −6 M), together with a good linearity (R = 0.995). Besides that, the biosensor possesses a low limit of detection (1.34 × 10 −13 M), which far exceeds the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for methamidophos (0.01 mg/kg) established by European Union. Additionally, the feasibility of the proposed biosensor for detecting methamidophos in real samples has been demonstrated with excellent recoveries (95.2%–101.3%). Interestingly, the unique structures and remarkable properties of these composites make them attractive materials for various electrochemical sensors for monitoring either pesticide residuals or other environmentally deleterious chemicals.

In Situ Label-Free Monitoring of Riboflavin Concentration in Shewanella via a Fiber-Optic Biosensor Modified by Ti3C2-MXene@ SGNps Composites

Po Jin,Enze Zhou,Liangliang Cheng,Wanlu Zheng,Yong Zhao,Shuang Zhai,Ya-nan Zhang

Riboflavin is a common marker of microbial corrosion and can act as an electron shuttle in the solvated state to enhance electron transfer efficiency. In this paper, an in-situ label-free fiber-optic biosensor modified by Ti 3 C 2 -MXene@Square Gold nanoparticles (SGNps) composites and riboflavin kinase is developed, which behaved with high sensitivity for measuring riboflavin. The sensing interface of the sensor is constructed by stepwise assembly of SGNps and riboflavin kinase using Ti 3 C 2 -MXene nanosheets as the supporting substrate. Riboflavin kinase catalyzed the phosphorylation of riboflavin to form flavin mononucleotides in the presence of adenine nucleoside triphosphate and Mg 2+ . Experimental results showed that the sensitivity of riboflavin measurement is 5.61 nm µ m −1 and the limit of detection (LOD) is 115 nmol L −1 (n m ) in the concentration range of 0–2.656 µ m . In situ label-free monitoring of riboflavin in Shewanella , the sensitivity of the sensor in bacterial fragmentation fluid is 53.90 nm/OD within the optical density (OD) of 0–0.175, and the LOD is OD = 0.017. The above results verified the feasibility of the sensor for in situ monitoring of riboflavin in microbial corrosive environments, with ultra-low detection limit and good selectivity, which undoubtedly provided great research value for the application of optical fiber sensors in microbial corrosion monitoring.
