A novel honeycomb-like WS2-x/CoS@C composite as anode for lithium ion batteries

Lu Shuangxing,Luo Wenbin,Chao Zisheng,Liu Yanhui,Han Shenghua,Fan Jincheng

Two-dimensional tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The further development of WS 2 is restricted by the defects of electrical conductivity and structural stability. Here, a bimetallic sulfide/carbon composite WS 2-X /CoS@C was prepared by a facile one-step MOFs-engaged method. The WS 2 /CoS heterojunctions and sulfur vacancies were introduced into the material, which improved the electronic/ionic diffusion kinetics of the composite. A large number of honeycomb carbon nanotubes were formed on the surface of the composite, which could effectively increase the specific surface area and enhance the conductivity of the composite. The WS 2-X /CoS@C electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance used as an anode for lithium-ion battery. The initial discharge capacity of the WS 2-X /CoS@C delivered 936 mAh/g at 100 mA/g and retained high discharge capacity of 600 mAh/g at 200 mA/g after the 100 cycles. Graphical abstract

Cooperative Effect of Ni-Decorated Monolayer WS2, NiO, and AC on Improving the Flame Retardancy and Mechanical Property of Polypropylene Blends

Mingqiang Shao,Yiran Shi,Jiangtao Liu,Baoxia Xue,Mei Niu

Improving the residual char of polypropylene (PP) is difficult due to the preferential complete combustion. Here, we designed a combination catalyst that not only provides physical barrier effects, but also dramatically promotes catalytic charring activity. We successfully synthesized WS2monolayer sheets decorated with isolated Ni atoms that bond covalently to sulfur vacancies on the basal planes via thiourea. Subsequently, PP blends composed of 8 wt.% Ni-decorated WS2, NiO, and activated carbon (AC) were obtained (ENi-SWS2-AC-PP). Combining the physical barrier effects of WS2monolayer sheets with the excellent catalytic carbonization ability of theENi-SWS2-AC combination catalyst, the PP blends showed a remarkable improvement in flame retardancy, with the yield of residual char reaching as high as 41.6 wt.%. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, it was revealed that the microstructure of residual char contained a large number of carbon nanotubes. The production of a large amount of residual char not only reduced the release of pyrolytic products, but also formed a thermal shield preventing oxygen and heat transport. Compared to pure PP, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release rate (THR) ofENi-SWS2-AC-PP were reduced by 46.32% and 26.03%, respectively. Furthermore, benefiting from the highly dispersed WS2, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus ofENi-SWS2-AC-PP showed similar values to pure PP, without sacrificing the toughness.Keywords:polypropylene;Ni-modified monolayer WS2;sulfur vacancy;activated carbon;NiO;carbon nanotubes;flame retardancy;mechanical properties

Enhanced interfacial interaction of mesoporous N, S co-doped carbon supported WO3-WS2 for green and selective oxidation of alcohols

Cai Xu,Liyan Dai,Yingqi Chen,Shaoyong Zhang,Chaozheng He,Xiaozhong Wang

WO 3 -WS 2 supported on mesoporous N, S co-doped carbon were prepared via one-step molten-salt strategy, and an enhanced interfacial interaction between metal and carbon was formed, which boosted the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. Under green conditions (solvent: H 2 O, oxidant: H 2 O 2 , no base-additives), 96.2 % conversion and 97.0 % selectivity were achieved within 2 h. It was found that N, S co-doped carbon with abundant mesopores served as an excellent support, the pyrrolic and graphitic N species of carbon provided main anchoring sites for metal nanoparticles. Additionally, the N, S co-doped carbon support could effectively promote the distribution of metal species, and thereafter induced the formation of metal–carbon interfacial interaction. Such advantages resulted in the satisfactory reusability (negligible activity loss after six cycles) and remarkable catalytic activity. The scavenger tests and EPR results disclosed that ·OH was the main oxidative species for this reaction. DFT calculations revealed that co-doping of N, S into carbon promoted the adsorption of benzyl alcohol, and the enhanced metal–carbon interaction reduced migration energy barrier of ·OH on catalyst surface. In sum, this work provided some new insights into the interfacial interaction of mesoporous carbon supported metal catalyst for boosting the selective oxidation of alcohols.

Space and interface confinement effect of necklace-box structural FeS2/WS2 carbon nanofibers to enhance Na+ storage performance and electrochemical kinetics

Huayu Wu,Nuo Xu,Zhouheng Jiang,Anyu Zheng,Qiaofang Shi,Rongguan Lv,Lubin Ni,Guowang Diao,Ming Chen

Necklace-box structural FeS 2 /WS 2 carbon nano-composite fibers (NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs) are fabricated by electrospinning-sulfuration-hydrothermal process. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit the spatial confined structure, which is able to restrain volume expansion effectively in the process of Na + intercalation/deintercalation and improve the cycling stability and rate performance. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit remarkable initial coulombic efficiency (ICE = 87.0%) and stable long cycle (~422.6 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles) for sodium storage capability. The heterojunction interface between FeS 2 and WS 2 can alleviate the damage of the micro-crystal plane and enhance electrochemical kinetic process. The structure evolution and mechanism of sodium storage are explored by ex-situ methods, which further confirm the spatial and interface confinement effect distinctly. In addition, the electrochemical kinetic properties of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are compared, thereby revealing the energy storage mechanism and different ion migration modes of the three batteries. This work provides a guide for the synthesis of bimetallic compounds based on the spatial confinement and heterojunction interface confined strategy that efficiently improves energy storage performance of electrode material.

Two-dimensional layered WS2 nanosheets as peroxidase mimetics in a colorimetric chemosensor for simple and rapid detection of acetone

Yang Hu,Yue Tang,Hong Zeng,Han Tao,Yuangen Wu

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with catalytic activity have attracted considerable attention from researchers, but their application in the detection of hazardous substances needs to be further expanded. Herein, layered tungsten sulfide (WS2) nanosheets with peroxidase-mimicking activity were used to construct a colorimetric chemosensor for rapid detection of acetone. WS2 nanosheets can decompose H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which will further oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) through hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to form the yellow product 2,3-diaminophenazine. Acetone can block the HAT from OPD to ·OH, thus causing obvious inhibition of the peroxidase activity of WS2 nanosheets, making the solution appear pale yellow or even colorless. The investigation of catalytic kinetics indicates that the catalytic reaction consists of the 'ping pong' mechanism, and the regulatory effect of acetone on WS2 nanosheets is confirmed to be an irreversible inhibition. The chemosensor can easily distinguish a trace amount of acetone by the naked eye in less than 20 min, and has a limit of detection for acetone of as low as 3.08 mg  l−1. The application in actual samples displays the accuracy and stability of the chemosensor, suggesting that such a method is promising for acetone detection.

Engineering flexible and green electromagnetic interference shielding materials with high performance through modulating WS2 nanosheets on carbon fibers

Huibin Zhang,Tingting Liu,Zehao Huang,Junye Cheng,Honghan Wang,Deqing Zhang,Xuewei Ba,Guangping Zheng,Ming Yan,Maosheng Cao

Flexible and wearable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material is one of the current research focuses in the field of EMI shielding. In this work, for the first time, WS 2 -carbon fiber (WS 2 -CF) composites are synthesized by implanting WS 2 , which has a multiphase structure and a large number of defects, onto the surface of carbon fiber (CF) by using a simple one-step hydrothermal method, and are applied to protect electronic devices from EMI. It is found that the EMI shielding performance of WS 2 -CF is significantly improved, especially for those at S and C-bands. At 2 GHz, the EMI shielding efficiency could reach 36.0 dB at a typical thickness of 3.00 mm of the composite, which is much better than that of pure CF (25.5 dB). Besides paving a novel avenue to optimize the electromagnetic shielding performance of flexible and wearable CF-based EMI shielding materials, which have great potential in the practical application for EMI shielding, this work provides a new paradigm for the design and synthesis of EMI shielding materials which have a broad application prospect.

Enhanced synergistic removal of tetracycline and uranium in wastewater using Defective-Enriched S-scheme hollow dodecahedron K3PW12O40@WS2 heterojunction

Xinyi Zhang,Rongshuo Guo,Hongqing Wang,Zhijun Zhang,Yinxiang Chen,Ye Zhang

In aquatic environments, the coexistence and interaction of multiple the pollutants complicate remediation process. This study focuses on developing a defective-enriched S-scheme heterojunction of K 3 PW 12 O 40 @WS 2 (KPW@WS 2 ) with hollow structure for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) and hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) in wastewater. The internal electric field (IEF) within this heterojunction plays a crucial role in efficiently separating photo-generated carriers, creating high reduction and oxidation active sites. The band structure and optical properties suggest that WS 2 -Vs have a narrower band gap energy compared to conventional WS 2 , leading to improved charge carrier separation and transfer rates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the reduced recombination of electron-hole pairs in WS 2 -Vs due to the presence of S vacancies. Experimental results reveal a synergistic effect between the removal of TC and U(VI), with a significant increase in the reaction rate constant for the reduction of U(VI) to 0.0426 min −1 , 1.6 times higher than in a single U(VI) reduction system. Additionally, the reaction rate constant for the oxidation of TC also rises from 0.0573 to 0.0729 min −1 . The study also delves into the photocatalytic mechanism, degradation pathways, and intermediate products. Overall, this research offers an innovative strategy for simultaneous pollutant removal and optimizing photocatalytic redox reactions to enhance solar energy utilization.

Two-dimensional transition metal-sulfide-modified V2O5-WS2/TiO2 catalysts for SCR: Comprehensive mechanistic insights into the in situ inhibition of SO3 generation

Bowen Li,Zhen Zhang,Tingfeng Shan,Qi Zhang,Yusi He,Xiangfu Wang,Hongmin Yang

The by-product SO 3 , generated by the conventional catalyst V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 employed in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, has garnered attention in pollution control efforts. Studies on existing control have predominantly concentrated on the tail gas section, with insufficient understanding of in-situ suppression theories and methods at the source of SO 3 generation. We propose for the first time the introduction of low-valence reduced sulfur to synthesize a novel SCR catalyst, V 2 O 5 -WS 2 /TiO 2 , which elucidates the remarkable effect and in-situ mechanism of action in inhibiting SO 3 formation at its source. Compared to conventional catalysts, the new catalysts showed enhanced SO 3 inhibition, particularly at 350 °C, where SO 3 production was 64.1 % and 33.9 % lower than that with VTi and VW/Ti catalysts, respectively. This was due to their reduced surface area, smaller pore volume, and fewer alkaline sites, which hindered SO 2 adsorption and oxidation. The results revealed that S 2− on the catalyst surface reacts with V 5+ , reducing it to V 4+ and V 3+ . This reaction hinders the interaction between V 5+ -OH and adsorbed SO 2 , thereby reducing the formation of VOSO 4 intermediates. Furthermore, the W S bond in WS 2 impedes the formation of intermediate HSO 4 − , and the reduction of these intermediates ultimately leads to a decrease in SO 3 generation. Additionally, the incompletely depleted S 2− reacts with the final SO 3 produced, forming SO 2 and SO 4 2− , which further decreases the SO 3 generation rate and supports the maintenance of a reduced state on the catalyst surface. It is evident that low-valence reduced sulfur plays a crucial role in inhibiting SO 3 generation.

Homogeneous time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay of microcystin-LR using layered WS2 nanosheets as a transducer

Xiaodan Qin,Yuanxiu Wang,Bo Song,Xin Wang,Hua Ma,Jingli Yuan

A homogeneous time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay method for rapid and sensitive detection of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in water samples was developed based on the interaction between water-soluble WS2 nanosheets and the conjugate of MC-LR with a luminescent Eu3+ complex BHHBCB-Eu3+ (BHHBCB: 1,2-bis[4'-(1'',1'',1'',2'',2'',3'',3''-heptafluoro-4'',6''-hexanedion-6''-yl)- benzyl]-4-chlorosulfobenzene). The large lateral dimensions and high surface areas of two-dimensional layered WS2 nanosheets enable easy adsorption of the MC-LR-BHHBCB-Eu3+ conjugate, that lead to efficient quenching of the luminescence of Eu3+ complex via energy transfer or electron transfer process. However, the addition of monoclonal anti-MC-LR antibody can induce the formation of MC-LR-BHHBCB-Eu3+/antibody immune complex, which prevents the interaction between WS2 nanosheets and MC-LR-BHHBCB-Eu3+ to result in the restoration of Eu3+ luminescence. This signal transduction mechanism made it possible for analysis of the target MC-LR in a homogeneous system. The present method has advantages of rapidity and simplicity since the B/F (bound reagent/free reagent) separation steps, the solid-phase carrier and antibody labeling or modification process are not necessary. The proposed immunosensing system displayed a wide linear range, good precision and accuracy, and comparable sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.3 μg l−1, which satisfied the World Health Organization (WHO) provisional guideline limit of 1.0 μg l−1 for MC-LR in drinking water.

Xueting Bai,Junying Wang,Xiaoyu Mu,Jiang Yang,Haixia Liu,Fujuan Xu,Yaqi Jing,Lingfang Liu,Xuhui Xue,Haitao Dai,Qiang Liu,Yuan-Ming Sun,Changlong Liu,Xiao-Dong Zhang

Two-dimensional WS2 materials have attracted wide attention in condensed physics and materials science due to its unique geometric and electronic structures. Particularly, WS2 shows extraordinary catalytic activities when its size decreases to ultrasmall, which provides potential opportunities for medical applications. In this work, WS2 quantum dots with strong catalytic properties were used for in vitro and in vivo protection from ionizing radiation induced cell damages. WS2 quantum dots possess unique optical properties of blue photoluminescence emission and excitation-wavelength dependent emission profiles. In vitro studies showed that cell viability can be considerably improved and cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be removed by WS2 quantum dots. In vivo studies showed WS2 quantum dots can effectively protect the hematopoietic system and DNA from damages caused by high-energy radiation through removing whole-body excessive ROS. Furthermore, WS2 quantum dots showed nearly 80% renal clearance within 24 h post injection and did not cause any obvious toxicities in up to 30 days after treatment.

WS2/Bi/BiOBr Nanostructures for Photoelectrochemical Sensing of 5-Formyluracil-2′-deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate through Hemin/G-Quadruplex Double Signal Amplification

Qian Wang,Huanshun Yin,Jia Ding,Yunlei Zhou,Shiyun Ai

5-Formyluracil (5fU) is considered an important epigenetic modification agent involved in gene regulation, cell differentiation, and development. 5fU exists in many cells and tissues but is highly similar to the structure of 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and is less abundant in genome. Therefore, the development of a rapid, sensitive, and highly selective method to detect 5fU is desired. In this study, a photoelectrochemical biosensor based on WS2/Bi/BiOBr nanocomposites, black TiO2 (b-TiO2), and hemin/G-quadruplex was described, which was found to be highly sensitive and selective for 5-formyluracil-2′-deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate (5fdUTP) detection. WS2/Bi/BiOBr was first employed as a photosensitive material, and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) was adopted as a 5fdUTP recognition and capture reagent, where DABA was captured by polyethylene polyamine through covalent reaction to form a stable amid bond. Then, a benzimidazole bond was formed between DABA and −CHO of 5fdUTP, and 5fdUTP was selectively captured on the electrode. Using b-TiO2 as a cross-linker, a guanine-rich ssDNA sequence was further immobilized on the electrode surface by covalent reaction with the 5fdUTP phosphate group. With the assistance of K+ and hemin, the hemin/G-quadruplex structure was formed on the electrode. The hemin molecules in the structure of hemin/G-quadruplex obviously enhanced the PEC response of the biosensor for detecting 5fdUTP, with a linear range of 0.005–500 nM and a detection limit of 1.53 pM (S/N = 3). In addition, this method exhibits optimistic selectivity. The precision and accuracy of this method were evaluated by studying the content of 5fdUTP in genome DNA of crop tissues with standard addition recovery experiments.

A highly-sensitive VB2 electrochemical sensor based on one-step co-electrodeposited molecularly imprinted WS2-PEDOT film supported on graphene oxide-SWCNTs nanocomposite

Zhouxiang Zhang,Jingkun Xu,Yangping Wen,Tongzhou Wang

A highly-sensitive electrochemical sensor based on single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) nanocomposite electro-catalyst supported molecularly imprinted poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film modified with two-dimensional layered tungsten sulfide (WS 2 ) nanosheet for the detection of vitamin B 2 (VB 2 ) was successfully developed. Molecularly imprinted WS 2 -PEDOT film was prepared by the electrochemical co -polymerization of functional monomer 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene in the presence of template molecule VB 2 and WS 2 nanosheet. SWCNTs nanocomposite modified electrode was obtained by drop-coating SWCNTs dispersion containing graphene oxide (GO) onto GCE surface. WS 2 was used for improving the denseness and smoothness in the morphology and structure of PEDOT. GO was employed for enhancing the electro-catalytic capacity of SWCNTs and the interaction with template molecule via functional groups. The imprinted sensor was characterized, and its performance and parameters were investigated and optimized using linear sweep voltammetry. Under optimized conditions, the prepared imprinted sensor displayed a good linear response to VB 2 in wide concentration ranges from 0.002 to 0.9 μM with a low detection limit of 0.7 nM, and successfully applied to electrochemically detect VB 2 in drug samples with good reproducibility, repeatability and storage stability. The new design for the facile fabrication of mimic electrode will open up a new horizon in the development of highly-sensitive biomimic/imprinted sensors.
