Conventional ceramics often require energy-intensive, high-temperature processing, which constrains their sustainability. Herein, we report an ionic melt-induced liquid-phase-assisted process to synthesize ZrO2–Y2O3–SiO2–Li2O glass-ceramics, reducing typical processing temperatures by ∼400 °C without cold isostatic pressing. By leveraging ZrO2–Y2O3 as the primary network former and SiO2–Li2O as an ionic flux, we achieve tailored glass transition (Tg = 866 °C) and crystallization (Tc = 1066 °C) temperatures. This enables low-temperature crystallization while enhancing the ionic conductivity. Phase analysis confirms coexisting tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2, Li2SiO3, and residual SiO2–Li2O glass, with minimal nonbridging oxygen content contributing to optimized mechanical properties. The optimal composition (ZrO2–Y2O3:SiO2–Li2O = 1:1.14, molar ratio) delivers exceptional Vickers hardness (8.25 GPa), Young’s modulus (109.2 GPa), and ionic conductivity. This work outlines a sustainable pathway for the development of advanced glass-ceramics and solid electrolytes with potential implications for structural materials, functional devices, and solid-state batteries.

Ammonia has sparked a lot of interest as a promising hydrogen carrier for the development of renewable energy and as a workable method to produce CO x -free hydrogen for fuel cells through its on-site decomposition. The catalysts, composed of nickel as an active metal supported on the Y 2 O 3 , were synthesized by the sol-gel self-combustion method conveniently, in which the active metals are uniformly dispersed. 700–1.25Ni 1 Y 1 O α exhibits the best catalytic activity and has the most active metal dispersion (6.15 %). The ammonia conversion can reach 96 % at 550 °C and 12000 ml·g cat −1 ·h −1 gas hourly space velocities (GHSVs) as well as 100 % at 600 °C and the same GHSVs. Temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the catalysts. It was found that 700–1.25Ni 1 Y 1 O α has the best capacity for hydrogen desorption resulting in weakening the inhibitory effect of hydrogen to the reaction and enhancing the reactivity of the catalyst. The electron transfer from Y in Y–O–Ni structure increases gradually as the Ni to Y ratio becomes appropriate, enhancing the alkalinity of the catalyst and electron density around the Ni, which is beneficial to NH 3 decomposition.

Glasses with high hardness, high Young's modulus, and high fracture toughness become crucial materials which are urgently needed in the protective covers for various electronic displays. Here, a paradigm is presented that the conceptual design of high-entropy materials is adaptable to high performance oxide glasses. We designed the multi-component glass compositions of 18.77R 2 O 3 -4.83Y 2 O 3 -28.22TiO 2 -8.75ZrO 2 -39.43Al 2 O 3 (R = La, Sm, Gd) and elaborated successfully the glassy samples through a containerless solidification process. The as-prepared samples demonstrated the outstanding mechanical and optical properties. The measured hardness, Young's modulus, and indentation fracture toughness of the high-entropy (R = Gd) glass are 12.58 GPa, 177.9 GPa, and 1.52 MPa·m 0.5 , respectively, in which the hardness and Young's modulus exhibit the highest value among the reported oxide glasses. Structural analysis revealed that the excellent mechanical properties are attributed to the large dissociation energies and the high field strength of Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , and ZrO 2 and the complex interaction between atoms caused by high entropy.

Highly efficient saturation up-conversion (UC) luminescent Y2O3:Er3+ microspheres have been successfully prepared via a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method. Bright visible luminescence can be clearly seen with a 1.55 μm laser diode excitation power as low as ∼0.03 W cm−2. The up-conversion (UC) emission spectra indicate that the strongest red emission with a peak situated at ∼660 nm originated from the 4I9/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+. The peaks situated at ∼520 and 550 nm can be assigned to the transition from 2H11/2/4S3/2 state to the ground state of Er3+. The high efficient saturation up-conversion emission is related to the highly crystalline structure. These results indicate a new way to enhance UC radiation in rare-earth ion-doped materials prepared using a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method.

The bimodal distribution of tungsten grain size, which is also called bimodal structure, is a universal phenomenon in synthesizing tungsten based nanopowders by wet chemical method , and could significantly deteriorate further sintering characteristics of the powders. In this paper, W-Y 2 O 3 composite nanopowders with small grain size and no bimodal structure were synthesized by an improved wet chemical method. It was found that reaction conditions, especially the hydrogen ion concentration(ρ(H + )) could significantly influence the microstructure and morphology of the prepared composite nanopowders and has an optimum value of approximately 0.16 mol L −1 . W-Y 2 O 3 composite nanopowders synthesized under this optimum value got not only the minimum average grain size, which is about 17 nm, but also the best grain size uniformity with no bimodal structure. The microstructure of co-deposited precursors and prepared powders was analyzed in detail to figure out the specific influence mechanism of ρ(H + ), and it was indicated that ρ(H + ) could influence the microstructure and the Y 2 O 3 content of the reduced powders through affecting the fraction of precursor that has little yttrium content, which may lead to the bimodal distribution of tungsten grain size of the prepared powders. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of bimodal structure was systematically analyzed and a feasible method was proposed to eliminate the bimodal structure. It is suggested that the bimodal distribution of tungsten grain size is attributed to the distribution of Y 2 O 3 during hydrogen reduction process and can be well avoided by controlling ρ(H + ).

To improve the sintering performance of doped barium zirconate, (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 (Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (YSZ) was added and BaZr 0.8 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZY)- x %YSZ ( x = 20, 30 and 50% by weight) composite ceramics were prepared by mechanical ball milling combined with high-temperature sintering in air. The crystalline structure, chemical composition, microstructure and electrical properties of the composite electrolytes were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS and EIS, respectively. The composite electrolytes only consist of BZY and YSZ phases, and there are no precipitates in BZY/YSZ grain boundaries according to the HR-TEM analysis. YSZ addition can improve the sintering properties of the composite electrolytes. When the composite ceramics with YSZ content of 50 wt% are sintered at 1450 °C for 6 h, the relative density and linear shrinkage are optimal. At 700 °C, the electrical conductivity of BZY-50%YSZ ceramic reaches 1.95 × 10 −4 S/cm and 1.67 × 10 −4 S/cm in the dry air and moist air, respectively.

MgO-CaO ceramic cores are considered promising for precision superalloy casting due to their high melting points, chemical compatibility with molten alloys, and water-assisted removability. However, the difficult sintering and limited mechanical properties hinder their further engineering application. In this work, Y 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 composite precursors were synthesized via a low-temperature solid-state route and employed as reactive additives to regulate the densification behavior and grain-boundary chemistry of MgO-CaO ceramics. The effects of Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratio, additive state (direct precursor vs. post-calcined powder), and addition level on the phase evolution, microstructure, densification, flexural strength, and refractoriness were systematically investigated. The results suggested a precursor-directed reactive sintering mechanism with two coupled contributions: At low Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratios, a transient Ca-Al-O-rich liquid associated with Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 promoted mass transport and pore elimination, while at higher ratios, the in-situ precipitation of lamellar CaYAlO 4 at grain boundaries contributed to reconstruct the intergranular network, strengthened interphase bonding, and suppressed grain coarsening via a pinning effect. Due to the balanced densification and grain-boundary stabilization, the optimal sample containing 1.5 mol.% uncalcined precursor with a high Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratio achieved a room-temperature flexural strength of 126.16 MPa and refractoriness of 1698 °C after sintering at 1600 °C for 3 h. As a result, post-calcined additives led to coarser and less interconnected intergranular structures with inferior densification. This work demonstrates that tailoring precursor chemistry provides an effective route to switch and coordinate liquid-assisted densification and CaYAlO 4 -dominated grain-boundary reinforcement, offering a viable strategy for designing high-performance MgO-CaO ceramics potentially used for advanced superalloy casting cores.

Ammonia-driven protonic ceramic fuel cells (NH 3 -PCFCs) represent a paradigm shift toward carbon–neutral energy conversion, offering high efficiency and moderate operating temperatures. However, their practical viability is currently impeded by the sluggish kinetics of ammonia decomposition and the severe nitridation of conventional Ni-based anode. Herein, a rationally engineered bimetallic NiRu/Y 2 O 3 is reported as anode catalyst layer (ACL) designed to overcome these dual challenges. Through a synergistic combination of combustion synthesis and incipient wetness impregnation, the 30Ni0.5Ru/Y 2 O 3 catalyst is optimized to deliver exceptional NH 3 conversion of 81.77% and 95.83% at 500 and 550 °C, respectively, under a high gas hourly space velocity of 30,000 mL g cat -1 h −1 . Mechanistic investigations reveal that this enhanced activity stems from Ru-promoted hydrogen spillover coupled with increased surface basicity; this synergy weakens N-metal binding energy and facilitates rapid H 2 desorption. When integrated into NH 3 -PCFCs, the optimized ACL enables a remarkable peak power density of 621.11 mW cm −2 at 650 °C. Furthermore, the pre-decomposition of NH 3 by the ACL significantly mitigates Ni nitridation, reducing the cell degradation rate from 41.01% to merely 18.24% over 50 h of operation at 600 °C. This work not only presents a cost-effective, high-performance catalyst for ammonia decomposition but also validates a robust strategy for realizing durable and efficient NH 3 -PCFCs.

This study systematically investigates the effects of varying Y 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 additive ratios on the phase evolution, microstructural characteristics, densification, mechanical properties, and tribological performance of β-Sialon ceramics fabricated via spark plasma sintering. The results demonstrate that both Y 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 promote the formation and densification of β-Sialon. Specifically, ZrO 2 facilitates the in-situ reaction with Si 3 N 4 and AlN to form ZrN, while Y 2 O 3 enhances the densification process through liquid phase formation. Notably, the content of in-situ formed ZrN decreases with the increase of Y 2 O 3 addition. Compared to the single addition of Y 2 O 3 , the optimized Y 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 ratio enables the formation of fine β-Sialon grains, well-dispersed ZrN particles, and minimal grain boundary phases. When 2 wt% Y 2 O 3 and 4 wt% ZrO 2 (SY2Z4) were added, the β-Sialon ceramic achieved an optimal balance of properties, where the Vickers hardness and fracture toughness reached 17.3 GPa and 6.7 MPa m 1/2 , respectively, representing increases of 27.2% and 28.9% compared to the sample with the sole addition of 6 wt% Y 2 O 3 (SY6). In terms of tribological properties, the SY2Z4 sample exhibits a significantly reduced coefficient of friction (0.582), wear volume loss (0.89 × 10 −2 mm 3 ), and wear rate (0.25 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(N·m)), which are 12.87%, 91.76%, and 91.67% lower than those of SY6, respectively. The results also indicate that abrasive wear is the dominant wear mode, and the in-situ formation of a protective tribofilm on the worn surface of SY2Z4 further contributes to its superior wear resistance. This work provides a feasible strategy for the microstructural regulation and performance optimization of β-Sialon ceramics via tailoring rare earth oxide/transition metal oxide additive systems, which holds great potential for extending their applications in high-wear-resistance engineering fields.

This study systematically investigates the influence of Y 2 O 3 content on the microstructure, thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and dielectric properties of AlN ceramics co-doped with 2 wt% LiF. XRD and Rietveld refinement confirmed the hexagonal crystal structure for all compositions, with the Y2F2 sample exhibiting a distinct lattice contraction. SEM analysis revealed a steady decrease in grain size and a morphological evolution of the secondary phase at grain boundaries from a discontinuous to a continuous state with increasing Y 2 O 3 . TEM further demonstrated that the Y2F2 composition yielded the most favorable microstructure, characterized by minimal interface defects and a well-ordered transition zone at the grain boundary triple junctions. Consequently, the sample with 2 wt% Y 2 O 3 (Y2F2) delivered optimal overall performance: a thermal conductivity of 231.26 W m −1 K −1 , a bending strength of 302 MPa, a dielectric constant of 8.396 (at 1 MHz) with a low loss factor of 1.4 × 10 −3 , and an activation energy of 1.04 eV. These results identify 2 wt% as the critical Y 2 O 3 content that balances oxygen gettering and lattice incorporation, leading to a synergistic optimization of properties.

The Y 2 O 3 coating was prepared on the quartz fibers via the precursor conversion method. Subsequently, quartz fiber-reinforced SiO 2 matrix (SiO 2f /SiO 2 ) composites were prepared using the slurry impregnation method. The effects of the thickness of Y 2 O 3 coating on the mechanical properties of the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites were investigated. The results indicated that the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites with a 0.10 μm Y 2 O 3 coating exhibited the optimal comprehensive mechanical properties, possessing a compressive strength, flexural strength, fracture strain, and fracture toughness of 49.0 MPa, 23.6 MPa, 4.44%, and 0.72 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. After heat treatment at 900 °C for 40 h, the flexural strength, fracture strain and fracture toughness of the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites with a 0.10 μm Y 2 O 3 coating were 20.3 MPa, 4.27% and 0.60 MPa m 1/2 , respectively, representing increases of 12.8%, 94.1% and 13.2% compared to the composites without the Y 2 O 3 coating. The Y 2 O 3 coating improves the interfacial bond strength of the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites after long-term heat treatment, promoting crack deflection at the interface and thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites.

Yttrium oxide is extensively utilized in high-temperature industries due to its excellent vacuum and high-temperature chemical stability. However, its applications are limited by poor thermal shock resistance, which arises from its intrinsic brittleness. The ferroelastic toughening phase LaAlO 3 offers significant fracture toughness, which is attributed to the ferroelastic domain-switching toughening effect. This study focuses on enhancing the properties of yttrium oxide using Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , and Al 2 O 3 fine powders as primary raw materials. Y 2 O 3 /LaAlO 3 composite materials are developed, and the LaAlO 3 phase is formed in situ within the Y 2 O 3 matrix. The effects of varying in situ-synthesized LaAlO 3 content on the phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal shock resistance of Y 2 O 3 /LaAlO 3 composite materials are investigated. The key findings are as follows: 1) The use of a Y 2-x La x O 3 solid solution, instead of pure yttrium oxide, as the matrix allows for the synthesis of the LaAlO 3 phase in situ within the matrix. This approach enables the coexistence of LaAlO 3 and yttrium oxide, resolving the issue of chemical compatibility between Y 2 O 3 and LaAlO 3 . 2) The solid solution effect of the Y 2-x La x O 3 matrix and the ferroelastic toughening effect of the LaAlO 3 phase collectively enhance the material performance. The addition of an appropriate amount of LaAlO 3 improves the sintering performance, strength, hardness, and toughness of yttrium oxide. These enhancements significantly improve the thermal shock stability of yttrium oxide materials. 3) The excessive formation of the in situ LaAlO 3 phase, driven by the LaAlO 3 reaction expansion effect, negatively impacts the sintering performance and toughness of yttrium oxide materials, thereby compromising their thermal shock stability. To address this issue, an optimal amount of in situ LaAlO 3 phase should be incorporated to achieve a balance between toughness and thermal shock stability in Y 2 O 3 /LaAlO 3 composite materials while preserving their hardness and strength.
