This study compared the application-specific benefits of PAC (Periplaneta americana chitin) and SC (Shrimp chitin) blended with PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) in innovative wound-dressing materials. By preparing SC/PEG and PAC/PEG porous blended membranes, it was found that PAC/PEG has better breathability, degradability. Based on this, we developed a Janus PAC/PEG@Zn0.3 composite film dressing for wound healing. After crosslinking PAC with PEG, a hydrophilic layer was formed through phase separation and selective dissolution, loaded with Zn2+, and combined with a hydrophobic PCL (Polycaprolactone) membrane using a simple coating technique. This composite film has the characteristics of being moist, breathable, and stretchable, and exhibits good biodegradability and compatibility. The addition of Zn2+ enhanced the hemostatic and antibacterial properties of the film. The mouse wound healing experiment showed that the dressing promoted collagen deposition and capillary generation, accelerating wound healing. Overall, the Janus PAC/PEG@Zn0.3 composite film is a wound dressing with promising application prospects.

Cellulose, especially lignocellulose, has attracted ever-increasing interest as a framework of hydrogel electrolytes in recent years due to its advantages including low cost, renewability, and biodegradability. However, lignocellulose is insoluble and gelatinous. Herein, a lignocellulose/poly(acrylic acid) dual-network hydrogel electrolyte was synthesized. The highly concentrated ZnCl2 solution was used for gelatinizing lignocellulose based on coordination bonds provided by Zn2+. At the same time, poly(acrylic acid) was introduced as the flexible network to construct ion migration channels. The double network was composed of fully physical cross-linked polymer chains that benefitted from Zn2+ coordination. In addition, water molecules were locked by highly concentrated Zn2+, endowing the obtained hydrogel environment with adaptability and an inhibited water electrolysis activity. Thus, the assembled supercapacitor could reach a satisfactory operation voltage (1.6 V) and areal capacitance (485.3 mF/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2) and high energy density (172.6 μWh/cm2), along with long-term cyclic stability (82.3% retention after 8000 cycles). Accordingly, this work provided a practicable design strategy for lignocellulose hydrogels toward high-performance flexible solid electrolytes.

High-safety and low-cost aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are an exceptionally compelling technology for grid-scale energy storage, whereas the corrosion, hydrogen evolution reaction and dendrite growth of Zn anodes hamper their further development, which are derived from the decomposition of active water molecules belonging to Zn2+ solvation structures in electrolytes. In recent years, strategies of regulating Zn2+ solvation shells in electrolytes have been demonstrated to effectively suppress the above-mentioned issues, and fruitful achievements have been made. However, there is a lack of systematic summary on the functional mechanisms and solvation structure evolution of electrolytes or electrolyte additives. Herein, this review gives a comprehensive introduction of the solvation structure regulation strategies based on electrolyte engineering for dendrite-free and side reaction-suppressed ZIBs, including high-concentration electrolytes, deep eutectic solvents, ionic liquids, functional additives, solid-state electrolytes and super-saturated electrolyte layers, particularly an in-depth and fundamental understanding of the effects and mechanisms of electrolyte modification on Zn2+ solvation shells. Furthermore, the general performance metrics of the above-mentioned strategies, potential directions and perspectives for further research are proposed.

The prolonged healing period and increased rates of amputation and mortality are significant challenges for diabetic patients’ wound care in clinical practice. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop timely and efficient wound management strategies to monitor the local glucose while promoting rapid wound healing. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel (PF127@Zn/C-G) was constructed by coloading the monitoring and therapeutic carbon dot (CD)-based agents (Zn/C) and glucose oxidase (GOx). For applications, the ″off–on″ characteristic in fluorescence (FL) signal of the Zn/C assemblies enabled the real-time monitoring of the local glucose levels in diabetic wounds. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Zn2+ and CDs was developed to promote wound healing. In vitro and in vivo results showed that the PF127@Zn/C-G hydrogel exhibited a good linear relationship between FL intensity and glucose concentration, and the FL signal intensity in the wound environment in vivo correlated well with the blood glucose, suggesting its function for timely reflection of the blood glucose content. In addition, the PF127@Zn/C-G hydrogel could accurately fit the wound contour to form a protective film, while effectively promoting cell proliferation and migration, and scavenging the accumulated ROS at the local wound, exhibiting an excellent angiogenic capacity and collagen deposition for significantly accelerating the wound healing during tissue remodeling. Therefore, the multifunctional hydrogel lPF127@Zn/C-G provides an effective and feasible candidate for improving the diabetic wound management.

Composite phase change materials (CPCMs) face challenges such as leakage and low thermal conductivity, which considerably limit their widespread application. To address these issues, an innovative CPCM composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG), Zn 2+ metal–organic framework (MOF@Zn 2+ ), and expanded graphite (EG) was proposed and prepared using in situ synthesis and physical mixing. This simple synthesis method eliminates the need for harsh preparation conditions, such as high temperatures, high pressures, or specific catalysts. MOF@Zn 2+ was designed by optimizing the citric acid monohydrate (CAM): zinc acetate dihydrate (ZAD) molar ratio at 3:2, with NaOH providing the necessary alkaline chelating environment. The synergistic effects of MOF@Zn 2+ and EG enable the double optimization of thermal conductivity and antileakage performance. The thermal conductivity of PEG/CAM/ZAD/EG (PCZE4) was reached to 4.32 W/mK that contained citric acid monohydrate (CAM) and zinc acetate dihydrate (ZAD) with 3:2, which was 12 times higher than pure PEG (0.33 W/mK). After heating at 90 °C for 4 h, the PCZE4 retained 98.38 % of its mass. The results reveals that PEG-based CPCM achieves an optimal balance between high thermal conductivity, thermal stability, and latent heat. The heat storage capacity is reflected in the enthalpy of melting (114.24 J/g) and crystallization (102.88 J/g). The proposed CPCM design offers promising insights into passive thermal management systems and energy storage applications.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins and essential nutrients, play an essential role in supporting human health. However, the perishability during transit and storage causes rapid degradation; consuming spoiled items poses significant health risks. Extending the shelf life of fresh produce has therefore become a key challenge for the food industry. In this study, a multifunctional composite coating was developed by integrating chlorogenic acid–zinc ion (CGA-Zn 2+ ) metal–phenolic network (MPN) particles into a polymer matrix composed of sesbania gum (SG) and biguanide-modified chitosan (Bi-Ch). Cherry tomatoes were used as the model fruit to investigate the coating's preservation effect. The CGA-Zn 2+ MPN particles provided strong antioxidant properties, which worked in combination with the antibacterial activity of Bi-Ch, enabling the coating to offer both protective and bioactive functions. The addition of MPN particles significantly improved the antioxidant capacity of the coating, increasing it from 64.83 % to 97.31 %. Moreover, the coating showed enhanced antibacterial performance. Preservation results confirmed that this composite coating effectively extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes to 9 days at least while maintaining their quality. Cytocompatibility assays validated its safety for food applications. As a biocompatible, readily removable intervention, this approach offers considerable promise for enhancing fresh fruit stability throughout supply chains—mitigating waste and bolstering food safety.

A new fluorescent probe (E)-4-(4-([2,2′:6′,2′'-terpyridin]-4′-yl)styryl)-1-dodecylpyridin-1-ium ( TPy-SD ), with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property in aqueous solution, has been synthesized and characterized. The new probe, TPy-SD exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn 2+ with a relatively low detection limit (1.76 × 10 −7 M). The addition of Zn 2+ is thought to disrupt the AIE property of TPy-SD , thereby leading to a fluorescence blue shift. Interestingly, the complex of probe TPy-SD with Zn 2+ ( Zn (II) TPy-SD ), with molar ratio of 1:1, can be used as a simple, sensitive, and rapid means for the detection of pyrophosphates (PPi) in solution (water/DMSO = 99:1). As evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, this detection is thought to be due to the strong affinity between PPi and Zn 2+ , which brings out Zn 2+ from the coordination cavity of chemical sensor TPy-SD , thus realizing the detection and recognition of PPi. Therefore, the new AIE fluorescent probe can be used as a dual probe for the detection of cations and anions.

Abstract A novel Zn 2+ fluorescent probe N ʹ-((4′-(diphenylamino)-4-hydroxy-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-yl)methylene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (TPA-HPH) with a larger Stokes shift (210 nm) was designed and synthesized, which was seen to be highly selective and sensitive to Zn 2+ ion over other metal ions in the system of MeCN:H 2 O (V/V = 6:4, pH = 7.0). Meanwhile, it was observed that the TPA-HPH solution changed from colorless to yellow by “naked eye” when Zn 2+ was added. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the probe showed a good linear relationship with Zn 2+ ion concentration in the range of 0–10 μM with a low detection limit of 7.3 × 10 −10 M. The fluorescent mechanism was proposed. Most importantly, TPA-HPH could realize on-site monitor and live cell imaging for Zn 2+ ion. Graphic abstract

Disulfiram (DSF) is an FDA-approved anti-alcoholic drug that has recently proven to be effective in cancer treatment. However, the short half-life in the bloodstream and the metal ion-dependent antitumor activity significantly limited the further application of DSF in the clinical field. To this end, we constructed a silk fibroin modified disulfiram/zinc oxide nanocomposites (SF/DSF@ZnO) to solubilize and stabilize DSF, and, more importantly, achieve pH triggered Zn2+ release and subsequent synergistic antitumor activity. The prepared SF/DSF@ZnO nanocomposites were spherical and had a high drug loading. Triggered by the lysosomal pH, SF/DSF@ZnO could induce the rapid release of Zn2+ under the acidic conditions and caused nanoparticulate disassembly along with DSF release. In vitro experiments showed that cytotoxicity of DSF could be enhanced by the presence of Zn2+, and further amplified when encapsulated into SF/DSF@ZnO nanocomposites. It was confirmed that the significantly amplified cytotoxicity of SF/DSF@ZnO was resulted from pH-triggered Zn2+ release, inhibited cell migration, and increased ROS production. In vivo study showed that SF/DSF@ZnO nanocomposites significantly increased the tumor accumulation and prolonged the retention time. In vivo antitumor experiments in the xenograft model showed that SF/DSF@ZnO exerted the highest tumor-inhibition rate among all the drug treatments. Therefore, this exquisite study established silk fibroin-modified disulfiram/zinc oxide nanocomposites, SF/DSF@ZnO, where ZnO not only acted as a delivery carrier but also served as a metal ion reservoir to achieve synergistic antitumor efficacy. The established DSF nanoformulation displayed excellent therapeutic potential in future cancer treatment.

Abstract A porous silica gel with both COOH and NH 2 groups was synthesized in one pot by the addition of l -glutamic acid ( l -GA) into a synthesis medium consisting of tetraethyl orthosilicate, water, ethanol, and 1-butylamine. The inclusion of l -GA in the as-synthesized product ( l -GA-SiO 2 ) was evidenced by FT-IR and TG measurements. The l -GA was chemically bonded with silica as indicated by the shift of FT-IR bands at 1510 and 1400 cm −1 in the spectrum of l -GA to higher wavenumbers of 1540 and 1460 cm −1 in the one of l -GA-SiO 2 . The TG analysis showed that the l -GA-SiO 2 had an increase of weight loss by 5.6% due to the decomposition of the included l -GA which was centered at around 313 °C, suggested by a new peak in the DTG curve. Compared with the one synthesized without l -GA, the l -GA-SiO 2 was more aggregated with smaller surface area. However, the latter showed a higher removal efficiency by 17.1% toward zinc ions in water than the former and the adsorbed ions were hardly released again into water from the used adsorbent. Aqueous zinc metal batteries are promising for safe and cost-effective energy storage. However, their practical application is limited by the intrinsic instability of the Zn/electrolyte interface, including water-induced hydrogen evolution, Zn corrosion, and dendrite-prone Zn deposition. Herein, glutaronitrile (GLN) is introduced as a multifunctional dinitrile additive to stabilize Zn metal anodes through coupled regulation of solvation chemistry and interfacial evolution. The polar C≡N groups of GLN can coordinate with Zn2+, to replace part of the water molecules in the primary solvation shell, thereby suppressing the activity of coordinated water. Meanwhile, uncoordinated C≡N groups act as hydrogen-bond acceptors to reorganize the surrounding water network, further suppressing free-water participation in hydrogen evolution and corrosion. This dual regulation optimizes the Zn/electrolyte interfacial environment, improves electrolyte wettability on Zn, homogenizes Zn2+flux, and promotes compact, dendrite-suppressed Zn deposition. Additionally, GLN promotes the formation of a chemically heterogeneous interfacial structure enriched with ZnF2in the inner region, which further protects the Zn surface and stabilizes the Zn plating/stripping process. The optimized ZHG6 electrolyte enables Zn||Zn symmetric cells to cycle stably for over 900 h at 1 mA cm−2and 1 mAh cm−2, while Zn||Cu cells maintain high Coulombic efficiency during long-term cycling. Furthermore, Zn||V6O13full cells exhibit enhanced cycling stability and rate capability, achieving stable operation for 3200 cycles at 5 A g−1. As evidenced in this work, dinitrile-based molecular additives provide an effective and scalable strategy to fabricate durable aqueous zinc metal batteries.

Zinc ion (Zn 2+ ) detection is critically important in both environmental and biological systems. Although Zn 2+ plays an important role in metabolic processes, excessive intake can lead to toxic effects, highlighting the need for simple and effective detection methods for Zn 2+ . In this study, palladium nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide (Pd@rGO) nanocomposite was drop-cast onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to develop a facile electrochemical sensing platform, and the resulting Pd@rGO/GCE was successfully used for the sensitive and selective detection of Zn 2+ . The morphology and structural properties of the nanocomposite were systematically characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to confirm improved electrochemical performances of the modified electrode. The sensor was linear with a detection range of 2.0–200.0 µM with a low limit of detection of 1.7 nM for Zn 2+ analysis using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. Moreover, the practicability of the Pd@rGO/GCE was proved by the precise Zn 2+ determination in drinking water sample.
