Hydration activated fluorinated grafting for poly (vinyl alcohol) with synergistic antifouling and dynamically tunable mechanics

Tongrui Zhang,Zhengyi Xu,Min Nie

Endowing poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with robust and durable antifouling properties has long been a critical challenge for its advanced biomedical applications. Herein, a facile grafting strategy is proposed that exploits hydration to activate the hydroxyl groups on the surface of solid PVA, enabling efficient and uniform fluorination. The modified PVA surfaces exhibit pronounced hydrophobicity and oleophobicity, establishing the basis for its excellent antifouling performance. Moreover, the permeability of the grafted fluorinated layer permits ordered water penetration, leading to the formation of a stable interfacial hydration layer. This hydration layer can precisely and reversibly modulate the surface modulus (from 300 kPa to 0 kPa), thereby tuning the mechanical adaptability to meet the requirements of specific biological surfaces. Consequently, this approach yields a versatile PVA-based material that integrates static antifouling properties with dynamically tunable surface mechanics, providing a robust platform for the design of next-generation, functional PVA-based biomedical devices.

Effect of Triisopropanolamine on the Compressive Strength and Early Hydration of Cement at Low Temperature

Zhang Feng,Bai Yin,Cai Yuebo,Chen Bo,Ning Fengwei

Triisopropanolamine (TIPA) was used as an early strength component to study its effects on mortar strength, cement paste setting time and early hydration characteristic of cement. And the early strength mechanism of TIPA at low temperature of 5 °C was also discussed. The results showed that, at 5 °C, the incorporation of TIPA promoted the condensation of cement paste, shortened the initial and final setting time, and accelerated the strength development of specimens at all ages, among which the strength after 3 d increased significantly. The 1, 3, 7, and 28 d compressive strength ratios of the mortars mixed with 1% TIPA could reach 196%, 179%, 160% and 110% respectively, and the mortar strength after 3 d exceeded that of the contrast sample cured at 20 °C. Under low temperature condition, TIPA could promote the hydration reaction of cement, shorten the induction period and advance the acceleration period. Furthermore, the maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release quantity would be all increased, and the cumulative heat release of the cement mixed with TIPA hydrated for 12 h and 7 d increased 73% and 38% respectively. TIPA could shorten the nucleation and crystal growth (NG) stage and increase its hydration degree significantly, so it promoted cement hydration reaction. Additionally, the hydration reaction rates in phase boundary reaction (I) phase and diffusion reaction (D) phase were increased, and the duration of I process was prolonged, thereby the development of specimen strength would be accelerated. TIPA did not obviously change the types of hydration products, but increased the content of Ca(OH) 2 in the samples and the degree of cement hydration. After hydration to 7 d, large amounts of hydration products, whose surface was smooth, were formed and bonded into sheets, and the structural density of samples improved significantly.

Influence of Polycarboxylate Superplasticizers with Different Functional Units on the Early Hydration of C3A-Gypsum

Kuangyi Hu,Zhenping Sun

Influence of polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCs) with different functional units on the hydration heat and hydration products of C3A-gypsum was investigated. Three kinds of PCs with different monomers were discussed. It was seen that PCs mainly shortened the induction stage of C3A-gypsum hydration, and the amount of remaining gypsum was related to the duration of the induction stage. The second heat flow peak of the sample with PCs was higher than that of the blank. Moreover, PC intercalation occurred during the hydration. Keywords:polycarboxylate superplasticizers;C3A-gypsum;functional units;hydration

Influence of particle size on the aggregation behavior of nanoparticles: Role of structural hydration layer

Hongyan Sun,Ruyuan Jiao,Guangyu An,Hui Xu,Dongsheng Wang

More and more attention has been paid to the aggregation behavior of nanoparticles , but little research has been done on the effect of particle size. Therefore, this study systematically evaluated the aggregation behavior of nano-silica particles with diameter 130–480 nm at different initial particle concentration, pH, ionic strength, and ionic valence of electrolytes. The modified Smoluchowski theory failed to describe the aggregation kinetics for nano-silica particles with diameters less than 190 nm. Besides, ionic strength, cation species and pH all affected fast aggregation rate coefficients of 130 nm nanoparticles . Through incorporating structural hydration force into the modified Smoluchowski theory, it is found that the reason for all the anomalous aggregation behavior was the different structural hydration layer thickness of nanoparticles with various sizes. The thickness decreased with increasing of particle size, and remained basically unchanged for particles larger than 190 nm. Only when the distance at primary minimum was twice the thickness of structural hydration layer, the structural hydration force dominated, leading to the higher stability of nanoparticles. This study clearly clarified the unique aggregation mechanism of nanoparticles with smaller size, which provided reference for predicting transport and fate of nanoparticles and could help facilitate the evaluation of their environment risks.

Effects of polycarboxylate superplasticizer-modified graphene oxide on hydration characteristics and mechanical behavior of cement

Qingchao Li,Cheng He,Han Zhou,Zhiyi Xie,Dongxu Li

Graphene oxide (GO) has received great attention as a nanosized reinforcing agent in cement-based materials. However, GO easily aggregates in an alkaline cement matrix and suffers from poor dispersibility, which reduces the beneficial effect on the final properties of cement composites. In this study, GO-polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer (GPC) was synthesized by free-radical copolymerization of GO with methyl allyl polyoxyethylene ether (TPEG), sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) and acrylic acid (AA). The chemical structure of the GPC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). To understand the influence of GO on the cement hydration process, we analyzed hydration heat, phase composition, and TG/DSC behavior. The pore structure and micromorphology of the cement composites were investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the GO layer spacing increased after copolymerization, and the GO surface was covalently grafted with PC macromolecules. The addition of GPC to cement yields uniform dispersion of GO and reduces the adverse effects of GO on the fluidity of the cement slurry. GPC can accelerate cement hydration, promote crystallization of calcium hydroxide (CH) in the cement slurry, refine grain size, and enhance mechanical properties of the cement-based materials.

Synergistic effect of nano-silica and silica fume on hydration properties of cement-based materials

Wang Yansheng,Xu Zhenhai,Wang Jinbang,Zhou Zonghui,Du Peng,Cheng Xin

Synergistic effect of nano-silica and silica fume on hydration properties was studied in cement-based materials. In the present study, various tests were used to characterize hydration properties including hydration rate, non-evaporable water content, crystal phase analysis, pore size distribution, micrographs of hydration products and compressive strength. The results showed that nano-silica can significantly increase the non-evaporable water content and decrease calcium hydroxide (CH) content at 3 days, while the silica fume takes equal effect at 28 days. The addition of 0.8 mass% nano-silica and 12.5 mass% silica fume can increase the total hydration heat of cement paste by 48.49% compared with the control sample. Besides, the total porosity of hardened cement sample reduces by 6.14%, which finally results in the more compact matrix of hardened paste. In addition, the microstructure of hardened paste changes from porous to dense matrix at 3 days after nano-silica and silica fume modification. Silica fume concrete incorporated with 1.2 mass% nano-silica significantly increased the compressive strength for 3 days. Synergistic effect mechanism of nano-silica and silica fume on the filling effect enriches particle size distribution by combination of nanoscale fineness of nano-silica and micron scale fineness of silica fume. In the meantime, nano-silica can effectively remedy the insufficient activity of the silica fume in the early age.

Investigation of the clay sensitivity and cement hydration process of modified HPEG-type polycarboxylate superplasticizers

Hongwei Zhao,Bing Liao,Fuwei Nian,Kun Wang,Ying Guo,Hao Pang

In this work, three kinds of HPEG-type polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCs) were synthesized with three kinds of typical functional monomers: [diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAM), respectively. The effects of montmorillonite clay on the fluidity of cement/PC pastes were investigated. It was found that the fluidity was negatively affected by the clays in the order: DMAM-PC < HEMA-PC < conventional PC (CPC) < DMDAAC-PC. The DMAM-PC was found to disperse cement well even in presence of montmorillonite clay. The dispersion performance of DMDAAC-PC was much more effectively affected by clay due to the reaction between ammonium and montmorillonite. More study including mortar fluidity, adsorption behavior and morphology of the cement samples were investigated in details. Thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments allowed us to observe the influence of PCs on the hydrated products. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Effect of triisopropanolamine on compressive strength and hydration of steaming-cured cement-fly ash paste

Fubing Zou,Hongbo Tan,Xingyang He,Baoguo Ma,Xiufeng Deng,Ting Zhang,Junpeng Mei,Xiaohai Liu,Huahui Qi

Fly ash (FA) has been accepted as one of the most popular supplementary material in blends with cement. However, high content of FA added would result in very slow strength development at the early age, and this problem limits the use of FA in precast concrete. In this study, an attempt was made to enhance the early strength of steam-cured high content cement-fly ash paste (SCHF, 50% FA) by incorporating triisopropanolamine (TIPA), and the underlying mechanism was systematically investigated in terms of hydration products, pore structure, and ions dissolution of FA. The early hydration process was assessed with isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric with differential thermo-gravimetric, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometer. The pore structure of hardened paste was characterized with mercury intrusion porosimetry. The solubility of FA was analyzed with inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometer, nuclear magnetic resonance, and scanning electron microscopy. The chelating ability of TIPA with Fe 3+ and Al 3+ was evaluated with the conductivity. These results show that with the dosage of TIPA less than 0.10%, the compressive strength will increase with increasing dosage of TIPA, mainly because of the acceleration of both hydration of cement and pozzolanic reaction of FA; while with the dosage more than 0.10%, the compressive strength was sharply decreased owing to its air-entraining effect to increase the harmful pores, with negative effect on mechanical performance. The reason for the accelerated pozzolanic reaction of FA is that TIPA can accelerate the dissolution of aluminum, ferric and silicate into solution to participate in hydration. The findings are expected to provide guidance on promoting the use of FA in precast concrete.

Reinforcing hydration layer on membrane surface via nano-capturing and hydrothermal crosslinking for fouling reduction

Zhu Xiong,Jiangtao Liu,Yang Yang,Qiaoyun Lai,Xueyan Wu,Jingxin Yang,Qingyi Zeng,Gaosheng Zhang,Shuaifei Zhao

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)@Fe 3 O 4 composite membranes were prepared by phase inversion, followed by crosslinking with hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers . The influences of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) on morphology, chemistry, hydrophilicity, electric charge and roughness of membrane surfaces were investigated by a number of characterization techniques. The results revealed that the dispersed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles reduced the micropores of the composite membrane and maintained the membrane surface roughness . Meanwhile, the dispersed Fe 3 O 4 enabled the membrane to capture more hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers, thereby leading to a robust, dense and zwitterionic characteristic hydration layer on the membrane surface. The reinforced hydration layer imparted the membrane surface with more stable water permeability and higher rejections to humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and soybean oil during five cycles of cross-flow separation. According to the resistance-in-series model, the anti-oil-fouling mechanism of the membrane relied on manipulating the hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent the foulants from approaching the membrane surface. The surface-immobilized Fe 3 O 4 facilitated the hydration layer to repel HA and BSA to permeate through the membrane via chelation and adsorption, and then reduced the membrane internal fouling. Our findings provide a new strategy to construct antifouling membrane surfaces by properly tailoring the strength and thickness of the surface hydration layer.

Effects of controlled release silica nanocapsules containing sucrose on the heat release of cement hydration

Lei Dong,Yiwei Zhang,Yandong Guo,Xin Shu,Xuyan Shen,Qianping Ran,Pan Feng

The usage of chemical admixtures, such as starch-based materials, is a common approach to addressing the thermal cracking problem of cementitious materials. Capsule-based controlled release technique enables the adjustable action time of loaded chemical admixture and thus reveals the potential on inhibiting the exothermic process of cement hydration . Three types of silica-based nanocapsules loaded with 53–63% sucrose retarder are firstly prepared by interfacial polymerization in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. The release characteristics of three types of nanocapsules are precisely tuned by varied preparation conditions. The effects of nanocapsules on the exothermic process of cement hydration have been investigated through calorimetry measurements. All prepared nanocapsules not only delay the appearance of the main hydration peak as the retardation effect but also reduce the maximum heat flow of the main hydration peak, to some extent, as the depression effect. The depression and retardation effects are improved with the increased dosage and slower release rate of added nanocapsules. The relationship between the two effects and the action time of loaded sucrose suggests the importance of persistently inhibiting the cement hydration over the entire accelerating and decelerating processes, which can be estimated by the time window between the action of sucrose (50% release time) and occurrence of main hydration peak.

Influence of cellulose micro-fibers on hydration characteristics of cementless UHPC using CaO-activated GGBFS

Yanchen Oinam,Suhawn Ju,Myoungsu Shin,Sukhoon Pyo

This study aimed to investigate the influence of natural cellulose fibers (NCFs) on improving the hydration characteristics of cementless ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) using CaO-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The NCFs were added in a saturated condition as an internal-curing agent so as to supply additional water to the UHPC matrix and subsequently increase the reactivity of unhydrated phases. To evaluate the hydration characteristics, saturated NCFs were added at 0 to 1.5 wt% of the GGBFS plus CaO. TGA and FTIR analyses showed that, as the amount of NCFs increased, the formation of hydration products was improved as evidenced by an increase in heat of hydration, indicating that more reactions of unhydrated phases occurred. Similarly, morphologies of the samples revealed the formation of hydration products on and near the surfaces of the NCFs due to the additional water exerted during the process of internal curing. Moreover, the compressive and tensile strengths were not compromised by the incorporation of weak and flexible NCFs, but rather a slight improvement was observed with a certain content of NCFs.

Hydration inhibition and physical plugging to enhance shale stability using zwitterionic polymer/nano-silica composite

Jian-gen Xu,Kanhua Su,Meng Li,Xueying Lyu,Shijie Zhu,Yuhao Huang

In order to enhance shale stability during drilling operations, efficient shale stabilizers in water-based drilling fluids become an urgent demand. In this work, a novel shale stabilizer (ZPS) was synthesized by grafting zwitterionic polymer onto nano-silica through two steps. The particle size of ZPS ranged from 80 to 355 nm, exhibiting a regular spherical shape. The hydration inhibition property was determined by Na-bentonite (Na-BT) immersion, linear swelling and hot-rolling dispersion test. ZPS behaved superior inhibition ability compared with commonly used shale inhibitors in all tests. The plugging performance was evaluated by pressure penetration test. Results indicated that ZPS could slow down pressure penetration rate and decrease shale permeability, which displayed better plugging ability than SiO 2 . The mechanism study showed that the cationic groups in ZPS could be tightly adsorbed on the clay surface through electrostatic attraction to inhibit clay hydration. In addition, ZPS could enter into the pores and fractures of shale to form a plugging layer with weak water affinity, resulting in excellent plugging performance. The dual roles of ZPS in hydration inhibition and physical plugging demonstrated its potential as an efficient shale stabilizer.
