Abstract In this work, the framework of Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/NCNTs) derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) through solid pyrolysis was successfully synthesized in the atmosphere of H 2 and Ar gases. The Co/NCNTs composites exhibited superior electrocatalytic performance for tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) oxidation due to the synergistic effect between chemical composition and the specific structure of Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes. It was found that the reaction underwent a quasi-reversible redox reaction with 37-fold higher anodic current for TBHQ at Co/NCNT-modified electrode when compared to bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). In optimal condition, Co/NCNTs/GCE exhibited a linear range of 0.05–80.00 μmol·L −1 for detecting TBHQ, and the limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be as low as 10 nmol·L −1 (signal/noise of S/N = 3). Moreover, the as-obtained modified electrode was successfully used to assay the content of TBHQ in edible oil samples. Graphic abstract

This paper developed a sensitive method for detecting hydroquinone by combining the unique optical properties of quantum dots and the specificity of enzymatic reactions . The interesting results shown that the fluorescence of graphite phase carbon nitride quantum dot (g-CNQDs) was quenched directly by benzoquinone or indirectly by hydroquinone (H 2 Q), and the possible quenching mechanism was proposed. Quinone might generate by catalyzing the oxidation of H 2 Q with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The intermediate quinone could effectively quench the fluorescence of g-CNQDs quantum dots. Therefore, a novel fluorescence probe based on g-CNQDs Quantum Dots was successfully used to detect H 2 Q by strongly quenching the fluorescence of g-CNQDs Quantum Dots which mediated by horseradish peroxidase enzymes. The detection limit was as low as 0.04 μM (S/N = 3), and the linear range was 0.5–11.6 μM. This kind of quantum dot-enzyme system has the advantages of simple operation, no modification of quantum dots, low cost, high sensitivity and short detection time.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based Cu2O nanocomposites were prepared by a facile one-pot reaction process. The surface morphology, structure and chemical composition of Cu2O–rGO nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Cu2O–rGO modified Pt rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) was successfully fabricated for the photoelectrocatalytic analysis of hydroquinone (HQ). The photoelectrochemical behaviors of HQ were investigated by the hydrodynamic differential pulse voltammetry technique, using the Cu2O–rGO modified Pt RRDE as the working electrode. The effects of pH values, rotation rates, illumination time and applied bias potential have been discussed. The possible electroactive intermediate product, namely hydroxyhydroquinone, was obtained through the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of HQ on the Cu2O–rGO modified Pt disk electrode, which was compulsively transported and could only be detected at the bare Pt ring electrode at around +0.02 V with an oxidation signal. We found that the peak current at +0.02 V had a good linear relationship with the HQ concentration in the range from 5.0 × 10−6 to 1.0 × 10−3 M, with a low limit of detection and excellent reproducibility. The present work has demonstrated that Cu2O–rGO nanocomposites have enhanced photoelectrocatalytic ability for the degradation of organic pollutants and this modified RRDE technique can be potentially applied for the in situ determination of organic pollutants.

Inspired by the iron porphyrin structure of natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP), an efficient carbon-based nanozyme was fabricated using nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) and iron ion (Fe 3+ ) nanocomposite, enabling selective distinguishment of hydroquinone (HQ) from its isomers. NGQDs with good dispersibility and uniform size were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process. NGQDs lacked peroxidase-like activity but the formed nanocomposite (Fe 3+ -NGQDs) upon Fe 3+ addition possessed high peroxidase-like activity. Fe 3+ -NGQDs nanocomposite exhibited shuttle-shaped structure (∼30 nm), the lattice structure of NGQDs and electron transfer between Fe 3+ and NGQDs. The Fe 3+ -NGQDs nanocomposite can catalyze the production of superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) from H 2 O 2 . The Michaelis constant ( K m ) of Fe 3+ -NGQDs (0.115 mM) was lower than that of natural HRP (0.434 mM) with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as the substrate and the maximum initial reaction rate ( V max , 16.47 × 10 −8 M/s) was nearly 4 times higher than that of HRP using H 2 O 2 substrate. HQ, unlike its isomers catechol (CC) and resorcinol (RE), could consume •O 2 − generated from the decomposition of H 2 O 2 catalyzed by Fe 3+ -NGQDs nanocomposite, reducing the oxidation of TMB. This principle enabled selective colorimetric determination of HQ ranged from 1 μM to 70 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 μM. Successful determination of HQ in pond water was also realized.

Au@Pd core–shell nanoplates were synthesized successfully through the heterogeneous, epitaxial growth of Au on Pd nanoplates. The Pd nanoplates were prepared by reducing H2PdCl4 with PVP, and then served as seeds for the nucleation of Au atoms formed by reducing HAuCl4 with citric acid. Characterization of the as-prepared Au–Pd nanoplates by scanning electron microscopy revealed that a Au shell was formed around the Pd nanoplate. In order to avoid agglomeration, the Au@Pd nanoplates were loaded onto reduced graphene to give a Au@Pd/rGO nanohybrid, which exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the redox of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) simultaneously. The linear detection ranges were 0.01–400.00 μM for HQ and 0.10–400.00 μM for CC, with detection limits of 0.01 μM for HQ and 0.10 μM for CC. Because of the excellent performance, lower detection, wider linear range, and better selectivity, the prepared Au@Pd/rGO nanohybrid has more potential applications and has an expected application in the electrochemical sensing field.

Efficient and sensitive detection of hydroquinone (HQ) in aquatic environments is paramount for environmental and human health protection. In this study, the CuS nanoparticles are successfully anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers (CuS/N-CNFs) by electrospinning and sulfuration strategies. The resultant CuS/N-CNFs nanozyme catalyst exhibits abundant sulfur vacancies and mesoporous carbon structures, resulting in excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of HQ. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates significant peroxisase-like activity, which can catalyze colorless 3,3′, 5,5′ −tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The mechanism investigations reveal that •OH radical serves as the main active species in this process. Based on these unique properties, a novel electrochemical and colorimetric dual-mode sensor is constructed for HQ detection with linear ranges of 1–614 μM and 1–57 μM, respectively, and the limit of detections (LODs) of 0.293 and 0.621 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the established HQ sensor platform is expected to be potential candidate for practical applications due to its satisfactory sensitivity and selectivity in real water samples.

The simultaneous electrochemical detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) isomers is hindered by overlapping voltammetric signals, creating a persistent sensitivity-selectivity-accuracy paradox. Herein, we present a synergistic sensing platform integrating BC-Co@NC nanoarchitectures (engineered via topotactic carbonization to form 3D hierarchical pores with atomically dispersed Co-N 4 sites) and a first- and second-derivative voltammetry cascade (FS-DVC) optimized by Savitzky-Golay algorithm. This dual-engine strategy achieves 152 mV interpeak separation, ultra-low limits of detection (0.09 nM for CC, 0.12 nM for HQ), a linear range spanning four orders of magnitude (0.3-500 μM), and robust performance in environmental matrices (95.2-99.1% recoveries in agricultural water/soil). This work establishes a new paradigm for electrochemical isomer discrimination through the synergistic fusion of tailored material design and advanced signal mathematics.

Effectively detecting catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) simultaneously is crucial for environmental protection and human health monitoring. In the study presented herein, a novel electrochemical sensor for the sensitive simultaneous detection of CC and HQ was constructed based on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)-modified multi-walled carbon nanotube paste electrode (MWCNTPE). Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques were utilized to characterize the sensing interface and investigate the sensing mechanism. Under the optimal detection conditions, the oxidation peak currents of CC and HQ show a good linear relationship with their concentrations in the range of 0.4–400 μM with a detection limit of 0.083 μM for CC and 0.028 μM for HQ (S/N = 3). Moreover, the sensor exhibits good performance and can be applied successfully in the simultaneous detection of CC and HQ in tap water samples and urine samples with satisfactory results, indicating its promising application prospects.

Hydroquinone (HQ) in wastewater is of great concern, as it is harmful to human health and threatens the ecological environment. However, the existing adsorbents have low adsorption capacity for HQ. To improve the removal of HQ, N,S-codoped activated carbon-ZIF-67 (NSAC-ZIF-67@C) was synthesized in this study by in situ growth of ZIF-67 on N,S-codoped activated carbon (NSAC) and carbonization. The influence of pH, contact time, and initial concentration on the adsorption behaviors of NSAC-ZIF-67@C on HQ were investigated. Owing to the synergistic effect of abundant active sites and well-developed pore structure, the NSAC-ZIF-67@C achieved a prominent adsorption capacity of 962 mg·g–1 and can still retain high adsorption performance after 5 cycles for HQ, which is superior to that of reported other adsorbents. HQ adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R2 = 0.99999) and the Freundlich isotherm model. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis before and after adsorption as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed that pyridinic-N-termini were conducive to the π–π interactions and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of NSAC-ZIF-67@C on HQ involve pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π–π interaction, and hydrogen bonding. This study is expected to provide a reference for designing highly effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant commonly found in food. The overuse of TBHQ poses a potential toxicity to human health, which has attracted significant attention in food safety. In this study, we developed a dual-mode test platform strategy centered on silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) for fluorometric/colorimetric TBHQ detection. The SiQDs with Fe (III) as the fluorescence switch and co-enzyme, were synthesized and characterized, facilitating the catalysis of TBHQ to 2- tert -butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TBBQ). There was a linear correlation with TBHQ concentration in the range of 5–200 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 μM. Furthermore, with the assistance of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a chromogenic substrate, the nanoprobes exhibited good colorimetric detection performance for TBHQ, with an LOD of 7 μM in the 15–500 μM range. Moreover, smartphone-integrated agarose gel strips were successfully developed for simple TBHQ detection with naked-eyes and the quantitative analysis with a LOD of 15 μM. The fabricated sensors successfully monitored TBHQ levels in spiked edible oil samples with recoveries in the range of 89.05–109.61 % and relative standard deviations (RSDs, %) less than 1.75 %, suggesting applicability for the detection of TBHQ in a complex food matrix.

We have developed a Ni-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and carbon black (CB) composite for the selective electrochemical detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT). LDH exhibits multiple active sites and high adsorption capacity for phenolic substances. CB demonstrates high conductivity and electrocatalytic capacity. The crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction, establishing the successful synthesis of flower-like LDH, and the successful combination of LDH and CB. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the LDH surface contained sufficient hydroxyl groups to adsorb CT and HQ. The morphology of LDH/CB was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the composition and valence confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The LDH/CB sensor delivered excellent performance in terms of sensing HQ and CT, with a wide detection range (0.1–150 μM) and detection limits of 0.011 and 0.0091 μM (DL = 3.3σ/S), respectively. The excellent performance of this sensor makes it a reliable choice for detecting HQ and CT in water.

Three-dimensional graphene (3DG) with macroporous structure has great potential in the field of electroanalysis owing to a large active area, excellent electron mobility and good mass transfer. However, simple and low-cost preparation of 3DG electrodes with high electrocatalytic ability is still a challenge. Here, a fast and convenient electrochemical polarization method is established to pretreat free-standing 3DG (p-3DG) to offer high electrocatalytic ability. 3DG with monolithic and macroporous structure prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is applied as the starting electrode. Electrochemical polarization is performed using electrochemical oxidation (anodization) at high potential (+6 V) followed with electrochemical reduction (cathodization) at low potential (−1 V), leading to exposure of edge of graphene and introduction of oxygen-containing groups. The as-prepared p-3DG displays increased hydrophilicity and improved electrocatalytic ability. As a proof of concept, p-3DG was used to selective electrochemical detection of two isomers of benzenediol, hydroquinone (p-BD) and catechol (o-BD). In comparison with initial 3DG, p-3DG exhibits increased reversibility of redox reaction, improved peak current and good potential resolution with high potential separation between p-BD and o-BD. Individual or selective determination of p-BD or o-BD in single substance solution or binary mixed solution is realized. Real analysis of pond water is also achieved.
