Lignin-xylan nanospheres prepared by green and quick method from lignocellulose and used as additive in PVA films

Qi Xin,Huiwen Li,Wan Sun,Xuezhi Li,Xianqin Lu,Jian Zhao

Lignin, as an amorphous three-dimensional aromatic polymer, was able to self-assemble into lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) to realize valorization of lignin. Here, lignin-xylan extractives were extracted from grape seed (GS) and poplar by acidic THF at room temperature, and effectively produced lignin-xylan nanospheres via spin evaporation. The morphology and chemical properties of nanospheres were determined by its natural origins, consequently influencing its application. For the lignin-xylan extractive from grape seed, the lignin was composed of guaiacyl (G) and p -hydroxylphenyl (H) units and the hollowed nanospheres (GS-LNPs) with 362.72 nm diameter was produced. The extractive from poplar was composed of G-syringyl (S) typed lignin (80.30 %) and xylan (12.33 %), that can assemble into LNPs with smaller size (229.87 nm), better PDI (0.1), and light color. The hybrid particles showed the qualities of lignin and xylan, that properties led to the LNPs@PVA composite films with UV-blocking capability, strong mechanical strength and hydrophobicity, and transparency ability of visible light. P-LNPs showed better performance as the film additives, due to its lower particles size and high content of unconjugated -OH from xylan. Xylan was significant in the composite films, and lowering the xylan content resulted in the decrease of the composite film's mechanical properties and hydrophobicity.

Polymerizable deep eutectic solvent treated lignocellulose: Green strategy for synergetic production of tough strain sensing elastomers and nanocellulose

Xiaoxue Wu,Zhiqiang Qi,Xinyi Li,Hao Wang,Keyan Yang,Hongzhen Cai,Xiangsheng Han

Liquid free ion-conductive elastomers (ICEs) have demonstrated promising potential in various advanced application scenarios including sensor, artificial skin, and human-machine interface. However, ICEs that synchronously possess toughness, adhesiveness, stability, and anti-bacterial capability are still difficult to achieve yet highly demanded. Here, a one-pot green and sustainable strategy was proposed to fabricate multifunctional ICEs by extracting non-cellulose components (mainly lignin and hemicellulose) from lignocellulose with polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDES) and the subsequent in-situ photo-polymerization process. Ascribing to the uniform dispersion of non-cellulose components in PDES, the resultant ICEs demonstrated promising mechanical strength (a tensile strength of ~1200 kPa), high toughness (~9.1 MJ m −3 ), favorable adhesion (a lap-shear strength up to ~61.5 kPa toward metal), conducive stabilities, and anti-bacterial capabilities. With the help of such advantages, the ICEs exhibited sensitive (a gauge factor of ~23.5) and stable (~4000 cycles) performances in human motion and physiological signal detection even under sub-zero temperatures (e.g., −20 °C). Besides, the residue cellulose can be mechanically isolated into nanoscale fibers, which matched the idea of green chemistry.

Ultrasound-assisted fungal self-growth and heteroatom doping for the preparation of high-performance lignocellulose-based supercapacitor electrodes

Ke Zhang,Lin Lin,Jian Zhang,Junyou Shi

Biomass materials are widely used as supercapacitor electrode materials due to their cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. In this work, ultrasound-assisted impregnation was employed for the thorough mixing of the liquid medium, and fungal treatment was conducted on the three main components of lignocellulose to prepare a fungi-modified heteroatom-doped lignocellulose-based carbon material (LCF-NP). The effects of heteroatom doping, the content of the three main components, and fungal modification on the electrochemical performance of lignocellulose-based carbon materials was investigated. The results revealed the synergistic effect of heteroatom doping and fungal treatment on the electrochemical performance. Compared with its counterpart free of fungal treatment, LCF-NP has a more reasonable pore structure and exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. LCF-NP porous carbon material has the highest specific surface area (792 m 2 /g), large pore volume (0.523 cm 3 /g), and ideal specific capacitance (1940 mF/cm 2 ) under the conditions of 1.0 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte and current density of 0.5 mA/cm 2 . After 10,000 cycles, there is almost no loss of capacitance. These results indicate that the joint utilization of heteroatom doping and fungal treatment has a promising application prospect in pore structure regulation and electrochemical performance improvement. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of lignocellulose-based carbon electrode materials.

Differential effects of ammonium and nitrate on lignocellulose degradation and nitrogen metabolism of Irpex lacteus in wheat straw

Dongze Niu,Sainan Zhang,Xuanhe Chen,Chuangyang Xu,Yue Tang,Chunyu Li,Dongmin Yin,Taoli Huhe,Jianjun Ren

White rot fungi, such as Irpex lacteus , offer significant potential for lignocellulose degradation in sustainable biofuel and animal feed production, but optimizing nitrogen sources to balance fungal growth, lignin degradation, and protein synthesis remains a critical challenge. This study investigated the effects of ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) and sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) on the solid-state fermentation of I. lacteus in wheat straw. While all treatments resulted in significant degradation of acid-insoluble lignin (AIL) compared to the raw material, only NH₄Cl supplementation increased fungal biomass. After 28 days of fermentation, NaNO₃ treatment achieved an absolute AIL loss ranging from 44.5 % to 61.4 %. Critically, the NH₄Cl group exhibited a significantly higher final AIL content than both the control and NaNO₃ groups ( P  < 0.05). Furthermore, NaNO₃ enhanced glucose and xylose yields from the residual wheat straw by up to 19.8 % and 46 %, respectively, compared to the control. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the NaNO₃ group had higher expression of genes related to nitrogen uptake and cellulose/hemicellulose degradation than the control. Compared to NH₄Cl, NaNO₃ also mitigated the downregulation of genes encoding manganese peroxidase and several cytochrome P450s. These findings suggest that NaNO₃ promotes I. lacteus metabolism by coordinating lignocellulose degradation with efficient nitrogen assimilation.

Determination of Odor Compounds in Lignocellulose-Based Panels Using DHS-GC/MS Combined with Odor Activity Value Analysis

Lina Tang,Qian Chen,Liming Zhu,Xiaorui Liu,Xianwu Zou,Yuejin Fu,Bo Liu

Wood, as the oldest natural polymer composite material on Earth, holds significant importance in the era of carbon neutrality and serves as an irreplaceable core material in the furniture and construction industries. As a primary raw material for furniture, wood-based lignocellulosic boards have drawn increasing consumer attention due to their odor characteristics. In order to achieve the determination of odor compounds in lignocellulose-based panels, this study established a method combining dynamic headspace sampling (DHS), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and odor activity value (OAV) analysis. To address the wide concentration range of odor compounds in lignocellulose-based panels, a three-level standard curve was established to meet the detection of odor substances in common lignocellulose-based panels. The favorable conditions for each factor were as follows: sheet-shaped samples, TENAX-TA adsorbent, 20 mL headspace vials, and a split ratio of 25:1. The method demonstrated good linearity within the range of 0.002–15 mg/m3, with recovery rates ranging from 94.74% to 103.44%. The method was applied to analyze commercially available particleboard, fiberboard, and plywood. A total of 33 odor components were detected. The results indicated that aldehyde contributed significantly to the odor of particleboard, acids were the main contributors to the odor of fiberboard, and terpenes dominated the odor of plywood. The established method is suitable for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of odor compounds in lignocellulose-based panels and provides reliable technical support for tracing, identifying, and controlling odors in these materials.

Cationic Lignocellulose Nanofibers from Agricultural Waste as High-Performing Adsorbents for the Removal of Dissolved and Colloidal Substances

Liangyi Yao,Xiangyuan Zou,Shuqi Zhou,Hongxiang Zhu,Guoning Chen,Shuangfei Wang,Xiuyu Liu,Yan Jiang

The accumulation of dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) in the increasingly closed paper circulating water system can seriously lower the productivity and safety of papermaking machines, and it has been a challenge to develop an adsorbent with low cost, high adsorption efficiency and large adsorption capacity for DCS removal. In this study, cationic lignocellulose nanofibers (CLCNF) were obtained by cationic modification of agricultural waste bagasse in deep eutectic solvents (DES) followed by mechanical defibrillation, and then CLCNF were employed as an adsorbent for DCS model contaminant polygalacturonic acid (PGA) removal. CLCNF was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The analytical results confirmed the successful preparation of CLCNF with 4.6–7.9 nm diameters and 0.97–1.76 mmol/g quaternary ammonium groups. The effects of quaternary ammonium group contents, pH, contact time and initial concentration of PGA on the adsorption were investigated in a batch adsorption study. According to the results, the cationic modification significantly enhanced the adsorption of PGA by CLCNF and the adsorption performance increased with the increase of the quaternary ammonium group contents. The adsorption of PGA on CLCNF followed the pseudo-second-order and the fitted Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption showed fast initial kinetics and the experimental maximum adsorption capacity was 1054 mg/g, which is much higher than PGA adsorbents previously reported in the literature. Therefore, CLCNF with high cationic group content developed in this paper is a promising adsorbent for DCS removal. Keywords:lignocellulose nanofibers;adsorption;deep eutectic solvents;cationization;dissolved and colloidal substances removal

Highly efficient and selective modification of lignin towards optically designable and multifunctional lignocellulose nanopaper for green light-management applications

Yan Jiang,Zehai Wang,Lin Zhou,Shan Jiang,Xiuyu Liu,Hui Zhao,Qin Huang,Lijun Wang,Guoning Chen,Shuangfei Wang

Transparent lignocellulose nanopaper (LNP) has been demonstrated to be a promising candidate light-management material for next-generation optical engineering applications. Similar to its role in plant cell walls, lignin serves as a vital functional component in LNP matrices. However, its intrinsic light absorption property renders LNP undesirable for a range of optical management systems. Here, a highly efficient, controllable and ecofriendly lignin modification strategy is developed for modulating the optical performance of LNPs by taking advantage of the beneficial synergistic effect of H 2 O 2 and UV light in selectively eliminating lignin chromophores . The obtained lignin-modified LNP features not only a high visible light transmittance (89%) but also a high haze (90%) and excellent UV-shielding capacity, owing to the well-preserved lignin aromatic skeleton structures after lignin modification. Furthermore, patterning is easily achieved on hot-pressing-induced densified LNPs through a selective lignin modification approach, which endows LNPs with intriguing optical designability. Benefitting from the multifunctionality of lignin components for nanopaper matrices, patterned LNPs demonstrate outstanding water and thermal stability, barrier properties, durability and biodegradability, which are of great significance for practical applications. Furthermore, we demonstrate the great applicability of this optically designable and multifunctional LNP as a light-management material for energy efficient buildings by highlighting its attractive sun- and indoor- light managing effects, effective thermal insulation , as well as superior durability for long-term use. In combination with its efficient, ecofriendly and controllable production, this novel high-performing LNP holds great potential in many other applications that require light-management structural materials, such as optoelectronic and sensing devices.

Heat shock transcription factor splicing variant TtHSF2β-I regulates lignocellulose and lignin-related compound degradation in Trametes trogii S0301

Zhongqi Dong,Yu Zhang,Qian Wu,En Yang,Jinping Yan

TtHSF2β-I regulates lignin transformation across multiple substrate levels. • Multi-scale framework links natural biomass to defined lignin systems. • TtHSF2β-I may relieve TtHSF2a-mediated repression by interfering with oligomerization. • TtHSF2β-I improves aromatic compound transformation and utilization. White-rot fungi are the primary biological decomposers of lignocellulosic biomass owing to their powerful lignin-modifying enzyme (LMEs) system. Here, we analyzed the regulatory role of TtHSF2β-I, an alternatively spliced variant of heat shock transcription factor (HSF) in Trametes trogii S0301, at three levels of substrate complexity: native poplar wood, synthetic lignocellulosic media, and specific lignin-derived monomers. Overexpression of TtHSF2β-I resulted in extensive disruption of poplar wood lignocellulose, whereas its deletion impaired fungal growth and substrate degradation. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that overexpression of TtHSF2β-I enhanced the expression of numerous genes encoding key lignocellulose-degrading enzymes. Using synthetic lignocellulose media and specific lignin-derived compounds, we further demonstrated that TtHSF2β-I controls the degradation and transformation of lignin-related compounds. Structural modeling and protein interaction assays suggested that TtHSF2β-I lacks direct DNA-binding activity, in contrast to TtHSF2α. Instead, it modulates transcription via protein–protein interactions, possibly interfering with TtHSF2α oligomerization to de-repress ligninolytic genes. In summary, our results indicate that alternative splicing plays a significant role in regulating ligninolysis in fungi. TtHSF2β-I, in particular, could be a useful target for engineering fungi with improved efficiency in biomass conversion or bioremediation. Oxalate-assisted formation mechanism of lignocellulose-based two-dimensional porous carbon and its application in zinc-ion hybrid capacitors

Xiaotong Ma,Xiaohao Liu,Lijie Sun,Rui Diao,Dongxu Yan,Zhenting Zha,Liangyuan Jia,Fenglei Qi,Zhitao Zhang,Yingcui Fang,Peiyong Ma

Oxalates are ideal additives for preparing 2D porous carbon from lignocellulose. • Oxalate-derived carbonate acts as an in situ hard template for 2D structures. • Decomposition–repolymerization behavior is the key to forming 2D porous carbon. • Oxalate-assisted formation process of lignocellulosic 2D structures is elucidated. • Prepared 2D carbon cathode shows high performance in zinc-ion hybrid capacitors. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials had demonstrated significant potential for various applications such as energy storage and catalysis. However, the conversion of solid lignocellulosic biomass into graphene-like 2D structures remained highly challenging, with the underlying mechanisms being poorly understood. In this work, ultrathin 2D porous carbon materials were prepared from birch biomass via a facile one-step pyrolysis process using oxalates as additives. Mechanistic studies indicate that oxalate significantly promotes the deposition and polymerization of holocellulose decomposition products, along with the release of lignin-derived phenols. This alteration in the “decomposition–repolymerization” behavior facilitates the self-assembly of reactive intermediates into 2D structures on the carbonate surfaces generated from oxalate decomposition, while the activation by alkaline metal ions within the carbonate templates effectively regulates the pore structures. When evaluated as a cathode for zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs), the resulting 2D porous carbon (KAC-800) delivered outstanding performance. It achieved a high specific capacity of 213.6 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , a remarkable energy density of 170.56 Wh·kg −1 , excellent rate capability, and long-term cycling stability (90.6 % retention after 10,000 cycles). This study elucidates the formation mechanism of 2D porous carbon in an oxalate-mediated system at the molecular level, offering valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance biomass-based 2D carbon materials. Short-life bamboo lignocellulose is superior-convertible for advanced bioethanol and nanomaterials to decline CO2 emission and environmental impacts

Hairong Gao,Boyang He,Yixiang Wang,Hao Peng,Peng Liu,Yongtai Wang,Yanting Wang,Qiang Li,Zhi Qi,Hua Yu,Xinchun Lin,Liangcai Peng

Distinct cellulose nanomaterials are generatable from bamboo undigested residues. • Ultrafine lignin nanoparticles are produceable from undigested lignocellulose. • Graphitic nanocarbon is assembled with a relatively high BET surface area. • Life cycle assessment reveals carbon mitigation and lower environmental impacts. • A green-like strategy is proposed for both bioeconomic and environmental benefits. Efficient utilization of bamboo lignocellulose remains challenging because its recalcitrance limits biomass conversion and utilization. Here, we demonstrate a cascading biorefinery strategy of one-year-old (Y1) bamboo by maximizing bioethanol production and converting all enzymatic residues into high-value nanomaterials. While the global lignocellulose harvest of Y1 bamboo was estimated for boosting sugars and bioethanol production, the enzyme-undigested residues were recycled to generate smaller cellulose nanofibrils and shorter cellulose nanocrystals by 21% and 50%, compared to its raw material and other 3- and 5-year-olds bamboo samples. The ultrafine lignin nanoparticles of Y1 undigested-residues with 92%–96% reduced diameters were subsequently obtained to generate the graphitic nanocarbon with the second largest specific-surface-area at 2865 m 2 g −1 among the most biomass-based carbons as previously reported. The nanocarbon was detected with much higher specific electro-capacitance at 261 F g −1 and consistently higher CO 2 adsorption capacity at 4.3 mmol g −1 . Notably, the 75-year life cycle assessments anticipate total carbon captures from advanced bioethanol and nanomaterials productivity of the Y1 bamboo, which may decline global warming and environmental impacts by replacing petrol-fuels and low-value bioproducts. This study thus demonstrates that short-life bamboo offers multiple recycling advantages for efficient biofuel conversion and effective bioproduct invention associated with the integrative reduction of total CO 2 emissions by cascading lignocellulose utilization and zero-biomass liberation. Breaking hydrophobic recalcitrance by penetrant and its coupling with external periodic forces in high solids enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose

Xuecheng Lin,Lan Wang,Hongzhang Chen

Experiment and model unveil penetrant mechanism against hydrophobic recalcitrance • A multi-scale model couples surface chemistry, seepage, mass transfer and reaction. • Reveal the synergistic effect between penetrant and external periodic forces High solids enzymatic hydrolysis (≥ 20% w /w) is the precondition for economic cellulosic biorefining, delivering high product concentration with minimal wastewater. At high solids, however, water transport becomes rate-limiting: flow switches from bulk diffusion to unsaturated gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the cell-cavity pore network, sharply impeding cellulase mass transfer. Existing approaches address this bottleneck almost entirely through reactor engineering, leaving substrate surface properties unexamined. Taking this substrate-surface route, we examined the specificity of Tween 20 enhancement on steam-exploded corn stover at high solids, and found that it acts principally as a penetrant governing unsaturated water transport, not merely through its low-solids enzyme-side roles of reducing non-productive adsorption and protecting the enzyme. The conversion gain amplifies sharply with solids loading, from 4.5% at 5% solids to 44.3% at 20%, while the capillary imbibition rate rises 117%, identifying imbibition as the controlling factor. Component-selective amphiphilic adsorption on hydrophobic lignin raises polar surface energy 121%, lowers the lignin contact angle from 68.8° to 50.9°, and doubles the capillary driving force. A four-layer multi-scale model coupling surface chemistry, seepage, mass transfer and hydrolysis reveals a positive feedback loop underlying the enhancement. Recasting this surfactant as a penetrant further exposes its coupling with external periodic force: the capillary pressure adds linearly to the applied compression and offsets a few percent of the mechanical drive. This work reframes penetrant action at high solids as the modulation of unsaturated water transport, opening a new direction for enzymatic-hydrolysis additive design. Effects of enzymatic hydrolysis and physicochemical properties of lignocellulose waste through different choline based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) pretreatment

Min Zhou,Meiqi Lv,Sulin Cai,Xingjun Tian

DESs are promising green solvents in lignocellulose pretreatment . In this work, four choline chloride based DESs were synthesized and their physicochemical properties were evaluated. Herbaceous lignocellulose (wheat straw, sorghum straw) and woody lignocellulose biomass (poplar wood, pine wood) were selected as pretreated substrates. In order to reveal the mechanism that pretreatment can improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis , the pretreated lignocellulose and lignin were analyzed. SEM , FT-IR and XRD characterization revealed the microstructural changes of pretreated lignocellulose, including the increase of surface roughness and pore erosion, changes of polysaccharide/lignin chemical groups, the increase of CrI. The efficient delignification increased the accessibility of enzyme to cellulose , the lignin content negatively affected enzymatic hydrolysis conversion. Furthermore, GPC analysis showed that the polydispersity of sulfonated lignin was reduced after pretreatment, lignin had more homogeneous molecular structures. The degree of unsaturation was calculated according to the elemental composition of sorghum straw and lignin. The unsaturation of pretreated sorghum straw decreased, that may be due to the removal of partial lignin. The elemental composition of acid insoluble lignin (separated from sorghum straw) reflects the increase of unsaturation of lignin after pretreatment.
