Evaluating the Flame Retardancy of Shaving Super Bamboo Layer by Layer Self-Assembly With Phytic Acid-Polyethyleneimine

Lin Peng,Jiang Yingqiu,Ru Xiaolin,Che Wenbo,Zhang Xiaochun,Ma Lingfei,Hou Junfeng,Yu Youming

To improve the flame retardancy of bamboo materials, layer by layer (LbL) self-assembly of phytic acid (PA)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) on the surface of shaving super bamboo specimens with different solution concentrations of PA-PEI and times of LbL self-assembly was completed in this study. Fourier transform infrared analysis results showed that PEI was well assembled to the surface of bamboo specimens by a hydrogen bond with PA as intermediation. The application of PA and PEI significantly promoted the formation of carbon residue, as characterized by simultaneous thermal measurements. Particularly, the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of bamboo self-assembly with 10 wt% PA and 10 wt% of PEI solution were reduced by 19.36 and 22.3%, respectively. The treated bamboo specimen showed increases of 35.56 and 480.70% in fire performance index and residual mass, respectively, compared to the control sample. Besides, yields of CO and CO2 were decreased by 17.77 and 17.07% in comparison with the control group, respectively. The LbL self-assembly with PA-PEI can effectively improve the flame retardancy of bamboo materials by promoting the formation of a residual char layer.

A highly conductive hydrogel driven by phytic acid towards a wearable sensor with freezing and dehydration resistance

Qin Zhang,Xin Liu,Jiawei Zhang,Lijie Duan,Guanghui Gao

Conductive hydrogels with anti-freezing and moisturizing properties have attracted huge attention for application in flexible electronics, which can work stably in harsh environments. However, it is challenging and urgent to enhance the environmental adaptability of hydrogels, while maintaining high conductivity. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel featuring remarkable freezing resistance and moisture-holding ability is fabricated via incorporating phytic acid (PA) into polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogels. The addition of PA not only endows the hydrogels with a marvelous conductivity of 0.105 S cm−1 due to the ionization of PA, but also promotes their antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria. Besides, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between PA and water molecules, the hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility and great conductivity (0.041 S cm−1) at −20 °C and could function well after storage for 15 days under ambient conditions. More importantly, the hydrogels can serve as reliable electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG) signal detection. Meanwhile, with the imperceptible strain perceivability (0.1% of strain) and a high gauge factor of 10.87, the hydrogel wearable sensors are capable of precisely monitoring and recognizing both drastic and subtle human motions under diverse working environments. This work provides a novel and promising method for developing flexible wearable electronics with environmental stability.

Selective Enrichment of Gram-positive Bacteria from Apple Juice by Magnetic Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Modified with Phytic Acid

Kang Yi,Liang Yanmin,Sun Hao,Dan Jie,Zhang Qiuping,Su Zehui,Wang Jianlong,Zhang Wentao

The emergence of magnetic nanotechnology has prompted the development of novel sample preparation techniques. Phytic acid (PA) is an organophosphate compound of natural origin. Not only is it highly attractive to multivalent metal ions such as calcium, zinc, and iron, but it is also capable of forming complexes with molecules such as proteins. Here, we describe a highly cost-effective method of phytic acid-modified Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 -PA) for the rapid concentration and isolation of foodborne pathogens. Using three examples for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively, we demonstrate the excellent selective ability of Fe 3 O 4 -PA towards Gram-positive bacteria with more than 98.76% capture efficiency for MRSA. The Fe 3 O 4 -PA trap almost completely captured Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of about 5.82 × 10 3  CFU/mL in apple juice. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser microscopy experiments showed that Fe 3 O 4 -PA can be non-destructive and non-lethal for the enrichment of Gram-positive bacteria. We believe that our work provides a fast and promising method for concentrating bacteria directly from food.

Redox-active phytic acid-based self-assembled hybrid material for enhanced uranium adsorption from highly acidic solution

Hao Lei,Shilong Song,Ning Pan,Hao Zou,Xiaoqiang Wang,Xianguo Tuo

Achieving efficient uranium adsorption from highly acidic wastewater is still considered challenging. Here, an inorganic-organic hybridized self-assembly material (rPFE-10) with redox activity was constructed by phytic acid (PA), ethylenediamine (EDA), and Fe(II) via a facile one-pot route, and further applied for U(VI) removal. In the static adsorption experiment, rPFE-10 achieved the maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity of 717.1 mg/g at the optimal pH of 3.5. It also performed preeminently in a highly acidic condition of pH = 1.0, with the highest adsorption capacity of 551.2 mg/g and an equilibrium time of 30 min. Moreover, rPFE-10 exhibited a pH-responsive adsorption selectivity for U(VI) and An-Ln ( S (U(VI) ) and S (An-Ln) ), which increased to 69 % and 94 % respectively as pH decreased from 3.0 to 1.0. Additionally, the spectral analysis revealed a reconstruction mechanism induced by multiple synergistic adsorption, in which U(VI) exchange with EDA +/2+ and Fe 2+/3+ and earned suitable coordination geometry and ligand environment to coordinate with PA (mainly P-OH), while partial U(VI) is reduced by Fe(II) in framework. This work not only highlights the facile strategy for enhanced U(VI) retention in highly acidic solution, but expands the potential application of supramolecular self-assembly material in treatment of nuclear wastewater.

Organic-inorganic building block of phytic acid intercalated graphene oxide for performance enhancement of plant-derived adhesives

Shicun Jin,Jieping Xing,Tao Liu,Kuang Li,Fudong Zhang,Jinfeng Cao,Sheldon Q. Shi,Jianzhang Li

The introduction of 2D graphene into the soybean protein (SP) adhesive is expected to enhance its mechanical performance. However, insufficient binding of the two materials inevitably leads to the resulting composite having limited mechanical strength. Using phytic acid (PA) and a supramolecular self-assembly strategy, hard graphene oxide (GO) was first assembled with PA to form a supramolecular polymer, PA-co-GO, that has a “bricks and mortar” structure as a result of strong non-covalent interactions. PA-co-GO was then further combined with SP in the presence of the long-chain epoxy compound neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether (NG) to produce a novel biopolymer-based adhesive PA-co-GO/NG/SP. The prepared adhesive has a moisture-insensitive interface as a result of non-covalent/covalent bonds and a “bricks and mortar” microstructure that allows the dissipation of energy, resulting in an enhancement in the water-resistant bonding strength of the material, with a 345% increase in its wet bonding strength compared with the unmodified SP adhesive. Additionally, the combination of the heat shielding of the GO and catalytic carbonization of PA resulted in the adhesive having excellent flame retardant properties. The structure and morphology of the materials were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy , and solid-state 13 C NMR. Overall, a new clean route for preparing green high-performance biopolymer-based adhesives is described, with potential applications for sustainable agricultural byproducts.

Preparation of hydrophobic coating by phytic acid-based hybrid complexes to enhance the surface property of wood

Longchao Ma,Yihan Zhao,Tao Zhang,Xinzhou Wang,Meiling Chen,Liang Chen,Yanjun Li

In this report, we present a simple and rapid method for fabricating a hydrophobic coating of Phytic Acid-based hybrid complexes on wood surfaces to enhance their properties. This hydrophobic coating's micro/nanoscale coarse structure is constructed from a PA-Fe3+ coordination complex, and its low surface energy is further modified by impregnation with octadecylamine. Polyethyleneimine serves as an intermediate layer, tightly binding the wood to the PA-Fe3+ coordination complex. We characterized the microstructure, chemical composition, water contact angle, and anti-mold properties of the wood samples using SEM-EDS, FTIR, water contact angle tests, and anti-fungal tests. Further, we assessed the hydrophobic coating's chemical and environmental durability, contamination resistance, self-cleaning properties, and mechanical stability on composite wood. SEM-EDS and FT-IR mapping results confirmed that the PEI and PA-Fe3+ coordination complex were successfully coated on the wood surface, with long-chain octadecylamine grafted onto the complex particles. The composite wood with a 3-layer hydrophobic coating demonstrated superior surface properties, including a water contact angle of 145°, excellent chemical and environmental durability, contamination resistance, self-cleaning properties, and mechanical stability. Notably, it also exhibited superior anti-mold properties compared to the control.

Bio-Based Phytic Acid-Amino Acid Salt Curing Agents for High-Performance, Transparent, Intumescent Flame-Retardant Wood Coatings

Chao Deng,Feixiang Song,Zhirong Chen,Wanhui Wu,Xiangfei Zheng,Rongxian Ou,Lichao Sun,Xiaolong Hao,Tao Liu,Qingwen Wang

The inherent flammability of wood restricts its use as a fire-resistant construction material. To overcome this challenge, the development of environmentally friendly, bio-based flame-retardant wood coatings offers a promising solution. In this study, phytic acid was reacted with three kinds of amino acids to synthesize phytic acid-amino acid salt curing agents (APA, LPA, and HPA), which were subsequently incorporated into a melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin to produce transparent, intumescent flame-retardant wood coatings (designated AMP, LMP, and HMP). Experimental results indicate that the AMP coating exhibits superior water resistance and mechanical performance compared to HMP and LMP. Moreover, when the curing agents’ ratio exceeded 10%, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) surpassed 36%, and the UL-94 rating reached V-0. Cone calorimeter tests revealed that the time to ignition (TTI) for wood coated with AMP-4 was 189 seconds, a 63-fold increase relative to untreated wood. Furthermore, the total heat release (THR), peak smoke release rate (pSPR), and total smoke production (TSP) of AMP-4 coated wood were respectively reduced by 50.6%, 61.9%, and 38.3%, demonstrating exceptional flame-retardant performance. The proposed mechanism suggests that the flame-retardant coatings decomposes at elevated temperatures, releasing non-combustible gases and catalyzing the dehydration of carbohydrates, forming an expanded char layer that provides both thermal and oxygen barriers. The prepared wood coating effectively inhibits combustion in both condensed and gas phases. This study provides an environmentally friendly and viable approach for the practical application of bio-based flame-retardant wood coatings.

Biological phytic acid as a multifunctional curing agent for elastomers: towards skin-touchable and flame retardant electronic sensors

Quanquan Guo,Jie Cao,Yangyang Han,Yumeng Tang,Xinxing Zhang,Canhui Lu

Strain sensors have attracted extensive attention for wearable electronic applications. However, for many reported electronic sensors, the utilization of noxious agents brings about potential damage to human health and the inferior flame retardance increases the risk of circuits burning out. In this work, a skin-touchable and flame retardant electronic sensor is fabricated by integrating green chemistry with nanostructure design. Specifically, renewable and biocompatible phytic acid (PA) is used as a multifunctional curing agent to cross-link epoxidized natural rubber for the first time and the obtained elastomer exhibits excellent mechanical and flame retarding properties. Then, an electronic sensor is prepared by depositing a nanostructured conductive layer on the elastomer substrate for human-motion monitoring. The resultant sensor shows the abilities to precisely detect not only large-scale physiological activities (finger and wrist bending) but also small-scale human motions (such as speech, coughing and expression). Notably, the electronic sensor is capable of self-extinguishing after ignition owing to the presence of phosphorus-rich groups in the PA-cured elastomer and could come into contact with the skin at liberty. This highly sensitive, skin-touchable and noncombustible electronic sensor, together with its simplicity and eco-friendliness in fabrication, is attractive for next generation wearable electronics.

Chitosan-phytic acid-metal ion emulsifier for long-term stable carvacrol emulsion: from characterization, stability to strawberry preservation

Lihua Li,Ying Lin,Li Ren,Beisenbayeva Kamila,Yuting Zhuang,Xin Lü,Li Wang

Chitosan colloidal particle-stabilized Pickering emulsions have shown potential in sterilization and food preservation, but limited by insufficient antibacterial properties of low-concentration colloidal particles and poor emulsion stability. To address this issue, we aimed to develop a new type of low-concentration, antibacterial emulsifier to replace traditional fungicides and emulsifiers. Through polyelectrolyte complexation and ion cross-linking strategies, chitosan, phytic acid (PA) and metal ions (Ag + , Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ) self-assembled hand in hand to fabricate antibacterial emulsifiers CPA-Ag, CPA-Cu and CPA-Zn. CPA-Ag and CPA-Cu exhibited excellent antibacterial properties, destroying cell membranes through the adhesion of chitosan and release metal ions to synergistically kill bacteria. In the surgical knife disinfection experiment, the sterilization rate of CPA-Ag (400 μg/mL) reached 99.8%, comparable to that of 3% hydrogen peroxide (100%) and significantly superior to 75% ethanol (89.3%), CPA-Cu (85.5%) and 400 ppm sodium hypochlorite (72.4%). Subsequently, CPA-Cu and CPA-Ag emulsified carvacrol to form multifunctional Pickering emulsions (CCE and CAE series) with stronger antibacterial properties, excellent antioxidant performance and storage stability (1-3 months). Additionally, the application of CPA-Cu, CPA-Ag and emulsions on strawberries could kill and inhibit the growth of microorganisms within 24 hours. In particular, CPA-Cu (400 μg/mL) and emulsions could extend the shelf life from 3 days to 5 days, reducing the rot rate of strawberries and slowing down the change in total phenol content. This research provides a new idea for the development of green, safe and low-concentration new emulsifiers and fruit preservation sprays based on natural components and non-covalent interactions.

Chitosan/Phytic Acid Polyelectrolyte Complex: A Green and Renewable Intumescent Flame Retardant System for Ethylene–Vinyl Acetate Copolymer

Tao Zhang,Hongqiang Yan,Lie Shen,Zhengping Fang,Xianming Zhang,Jiajun Wang,Baoyue Zhang

We describe the preparation and characterization of a green and renewable polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) containing phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon elements, based on the ionic complexation between chitosan and phytic acid. Introduction of this PEC to ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) leads to an improvement of the flame retardancy. As for the EVA/PEC composites with 20.0 wt % of PEC (EVA/20PEC), the char residue at 600 °C is 12 wt % higher than that of the pristine EVA under nitrogen atmosphere. Compared to the pristine EVA, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of EVA/20PEC show 249 W g–1 and 5.6 kJ g–1 decreases, respectively. The char residue of EVA/20PEC is full and compact, demonstrating excellent intumescent effect. Introduction of this PEC also contributes to a slight increase of the Young’s modulus while maintains the excellent ductility. This work provides a new approach for the development of environmentally friendly intumescent flame retardant system.

Boosting SERS Performance of TiO2 Microspheres via Phytic Acid Modification: Application to Bisphenol A Detection in Consumer Products

Boran Zhang,Qinyi Li,Yun Qin,Li Zhang,Ranran Zhou,Xinling Liu,Yiping Wu,Ying Wen,Haifeng Yang,Xiaoyu Guo

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on semiconductor substrates offers advantages of low cost and high stability over noble metals, but its practical application is hindered by intrinsically weak signal enhancement. Herein, we report a simple molecular engineering strategy to dramatically boost the SERS performance of TiO2 microspheres through phytic acid (PA) modification. The PA molecules anchor onto TiO2 surfaces via Ti–O–P bonds, forming PA/TiO2 composites in a single-step postsynthesis process. The optimized PA/TiO2 substrate achieves an enhancement factor (EF) of 1.2 × 107─comparable to typical noble metal substrates─and enables detection of the probe molecule 4-mercaptobenzoic acid at concentrations as low as 1 × 10–9 mol/L. Comprehensive mechanistic investigation reveals a synergistic effect: (i) PA-induced coffee-ring aggregation for analyte enrichment, (ii) Mie resonance from the TiO2 microspheres (∼253 nm) for electromagnetic field enhancement, and (iii) charge transfer (CT) resonance at the PA/TiO2 interface for additional chemical contribution, supported by density functional theory calculations and finite-difference time-domain simulations. Leveraging this high-performance platform, we construct an SERS sensor for the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA), a common contaminant in thermal paper products. The sensor exhibits excellent analytical performance: a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.7 × 10–7 mol/L, a wide linear range from 5.0 × 10–6 to 1.0 × 10–3 mol/L (R2 = 0.9971), and satisfactory spike-recovery results (97.8–103.0%) in real thermal paper samples. This work demonstrates that molecular-level surface engineering offers a scalable and cost-effective route to high-performance semiconductor SERS substrates for environmental monitoring applications.

Reconfiguring the Proton Transport Channels in Proton Exchange Membranes via Phytic Acid-Functionalized Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Performance

Zhou Libo,Song Jingnan,Hao Bonan,Xu Kangwei,Liu Feng,Zhang Yongming

Precise regulation of the hydrophilic channels within perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) proton exchange membranes is critical for their performance. Here, we present a high-performance composite membrane in which phytic acid-functionalized graphene oxide (PhyGO) is introduced into the PFSA matrix to reconfigure the hydrophilic channels. At an optimal loading of 1 wt %, PhyGO nanosheets are well-dispersed in the PFSA matrix, and their phosphate groups establish an additional hydrogen-bonding network. This network bridges and reconfigures the original hydrophilic channels into more continuous pathways for proton transport. Consequently, the composite membranes exhibit enhanced proton conductivity (1.23 times at 80 ° C), improved dimensional stability (0.94 times at 80 ° C), suppressed hydrogen crossover (0.91 times), and increased power density (1.21 times) compared to pristine PFSA membranes. Furthermore, the composite membrane also demonstrates superior chemical durability, which is attributed to the combined hydrogen-barrier effect and radical-quenching ability of PhyGO nanosheets. In contrast, excessive PhyGO loading leads to severe filler aggregation, disrupting the continuity of proton transport channels and mechanical integrity, thus degrading the overall performance. This work demonstrates that employing functionalized 2D nanomaterials to reconstruct the hydrophilic proton-conducting pathways is an effective strategy for developing high-performance composite membranes.
