Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are renowned for their high theoretical energy density and low cost, yet their practical implementation is hampered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics. Herein, a sol–gel strategy is proposed to engineer a multifunctional MXene/Fe3O4composite as an efficient mediator for the cathode interlayer. The synthesized composite features Fe3O4nanospheres uniformly anchored on the highly conductive Ti3C2TxMXene lamellae, forming a unique 0D/2D conductive network. This structure not only provides abundant polar sites for strong chemical adsorption of polysulfides but also significantly enhances charge transfer, thereby accelerating the conversion kinetics. As a result, the Li-S battery based on the MXene/Fe3O4interlayer delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1367.1 mAh g−1at 0.2 C and maintains a stable capacity of 1103.4 mAh g−1after 100 cycles, demonstrating an exceptionally low capacity decay rate of only 0.19% per cycle. Even at a high rate of 1 C, a remarkable capacity of 1066.1 mAh g−1is retained. Electrochemical analyses confirm the dual role of the composite in effectively suppressing the shuttle effect and catalyzing the polysulfide conversion. This sol–gel engineering approach offers valuable insight into the design of high-performance mediators for advanced Li-S batteries.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been regarded as a competitive candidate for next generation electrochemical energy-storage technologies. However, the insulation of charge and discharge products (sulfur and lithium sulfide) and the shuttle efforts of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), result in not only a series of phase conversion but also sluggish redox kinetics in Li-S electrochemistry. Herein, we firstly designed a flexible carbon cloth/molybdenum selenide (CC/MoSe 2 ) by growing ultra-thin MoSe 2 nanosheets on CC as binder-free electrode to understand the regulation mechanism in Li-S battery. With systematic electrochemical investigation of in-situ deposition Li 2 S 8 in CC/MoSe 2 , it is found that CC/MoSe 2 exhibits high LiPSs chemical adsorption and electrocatalytic activity, which large enhances the LiPSs conversion. The dynamic regulation of LiPSs change the nucleation and growth of Li 2 S, resulting in high uniform distribution on CC/MoSe 2 electrode. Thus, it obtains high sulfur redox kinetics and utilization, which achieves initial capacity of 1142 mAh g -1 with low capacity fade of only 0.038 % per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C. Even at high S loading (4 mg cm -2 ) and extremely low electrolyte/S (E/S) ratio of 6.2 μL mg -1 , it still delivers 1204 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2C with 93.3% capacity maintain.

Herein, we introduce polymer nanofibers of TiO2@NiCo-LDH as interlayers into Li–S batteries. From 0 to 60 °C, the interlayers can deliver high sulfur utilization, an outstanding rate capability, and excellent cycling life. High-temperature excitation makes it easier for the valence band electrons of TiO2 to transition to the conduction band. The electron–hole pairs formed on the surface combine with the ether group of 1,3-dioxolane in the electrolyte, which greatly reduces the decomposition and volatilization rates of the electrolyte, ensuring Li–S batteries with good cycle performance at high temperatures. The capacity can stabilize at 798.6 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 60 °C and 1C, and the battery can provide a capacity higher than 323.2 mAh g–1 at 0 °C. Simultaneously, the lithium metal symmetrical battery with a functional separator can be continuously cycled for 1800 and 750 h without a short circuit at the current densities of 0.65 and 1.63 mA cm–2, respectively.

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are a leading next-generation energy storage technology, owing to their high theoretical capacity and energy density. However, the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effect and slow redox kinetics limit the cycling stability and rate capability of LSBs. To address this challenge, a layered Cu 7.2 S 4 uniformly embedded within a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix (Cu 7.2 S 4 @NC) is synthesized and employed as a functional coating on the separator. The NC framework establishes a conductive network that enhances the confinement of LiPSs. Meanwhile, Cu 7.2 S 4 serves as catalytic centers that significantly accelerate the redox kinetics of LiPSs, thereby boosting the overall electrocatalytic activity. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that the cell with the Cu 7.2 S 4 @NC separator exhibits outstanding cycling performance, maintaining 771 mAh g –1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. With a sulfur loading of 5.3 mg cm –2 , the cell achieves an areal capacity of 5.5 mAh cm –1 . The cells exhibit stable cycling performance across a broad temperature range (0–60 ° C). Furthermore, combined density functional theory calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy confirm that Cu 7.2 S 4 exhibits strong binding affinity toward LiPSs, thereby enabling efficient sequestration of these species. This work demonstrates that Cu 7.2 S 4 @NC serves as a functional catalyst capable of enabling high-performance LSBs with broad temperature adaptability.

Sulfur-based flow batteries (SFBs) attract attention for large-scale energy storage due to the abundance and low cost of sulfur, as well as their simple design; however, they face challenges such as sluggish polysulfide redox kinetics, which cause high overpotentials and low efficiency. Herein, we introduce highly active quinone-based homogeneous molecular catalysts in the SFBs to alter the ionic arrangement around S(0) atoms, reducing the strong binding of disulfide bonds and thereby enhancing the electrochemical activity of polysulfides. The DHBQ catalyst could significantly lessen the overpotential to 280 mV (from 409 mV) at 20 mA cm–2 and increase the capacity to 10.8 Ah L–1(over three times that of the untreated one). A polysulfide-ferrocyanide flow battery was demonstrated for 200 cycles at 40 mA cm–2 with a 100% capacity retention rate. These improvements highlight the effectiveness of quinone-based homogeneous catalysts in overcoming the bottlenecks of SFBs, offering a promising strategy for their practical application in long-duration and large-scale energy storage systems.

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts to effectively address redox kinetics and the shuttle effect in lithium‑sulfur (Li-S) batteries remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we elaborately engineer an novel heterostructures electrocatalysts with ultra-thin Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) nanosheets anchored in a graphene mesh (rGO@Ni(OH) 2 ) via a general electrostatic self-assembly strategy. This configuration can function as a highly conductive network and offer abundant active sites and catalytic surfaces. Extensive kinetic techniques combined with a convergence of density functional theory (DFT) calculations collectively decipher that interpenetrated nano-hetero-interfacing of vertically oriented Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets coupling of graphene mesh largely trigger a redistribution of electrons due to the strong interfacial interactions, resulting in more optimized adsorption energies of the polysulfide (LiPSs), and significantly promoting the LiPSs bidirectional catalytic transformation kinetics. Consequently, the rGO@Ni(OH) 2 integrated separator achieves consolidated uniform lithium deposition (surprisingly stable cycle at 0.5 mA cm −2 for up to 1000 h). The cell equipped with rGO@Ni(OH) 2 separator exhibits a high initial capacity of 1318 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and exceptional durability. More encouragingly, the rGO@Ni(OH) 2 based pouch cells sustain a promising discharge capacity of 485 mAh g −1 (257 mAh) following 100 cycles at 0.2C. This research significantly advances the comprehension of the catalysis mechanism with nano-heterointerfaces in modulating sulfur redox pathways.

Cyanate (CE) resin and ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber are respectively important matrix and reinforcing material for lightweight and high wave-transparent composites. However, the preparation and application of the composites is limited by the mismatch of molding temperature between CE resin and UHMWPE fiber. The best method to solve this problem is to catalyze the CE resin curing reaction and reduce its molding temperature from 270 to 135°C, which is the upper heat-resistance temperature of UHMWPE fiber. In this study, the polysulfide catalyst (PSC) was used to catalyze CE resin curing reaction, reduce the curing reaction activation energy and the molding temperature. The apparent activation energy of the CE-PSC resin decreases from 107.2 to 60.7 kJ mol −1 , and the glass transition temperature of the CE-PSC resin is 257.2°C, flexural strength and tensile strength are 120.2 and 60.8 MPa, respectively. As a result, the CE-PSC/UHMWPE fiber composites, which are molded at the matching temperature of 135°C, have low density of 1.05 g cm −3 , low dielectric constant of 2.4, low dielectric loss of 0.006, and high wave transmittance of 92.2%. Therefore, the CE-PSC/UHMWPE fiber composites have wide application prospect in the field of light weight and high wave-transparent composites. Highlights A novel catalytic CE resin can be cured at 135°C with low dielectric properties. The processing temperature mismatch between CE and UHMWPE fiber was solved. Catalytic CE/UHMWPE composites have lightweight and high wave-transparent properties.

Room-temperature (RT) sodium–sulfur batteries hold great promise for the development of efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the dissolution of long-chain polysulfides is a huge obstacle. In this work, a composite cathode which integrates Ni/Co bimetal nanoparticles as the catalyst and carbon spheres with abundant channels as the host is prepared for RT Na–S batteries. Moreover, a valuable strategy to reduce the dissolution of polysulfides by accurately regulating the two-step reaction kinetics of polysulfide transformation (from Na2S to long-chain polysulfides and then from polysulfides to sulfur) is presented. Through adjusting the ratio of Ni and Co, the optimal cathode with a Ni/Co ratio of 1:2 can retard the first conversion of Na2S to polysulfides and simultaneously accelerate the subsequent transformation of polysulfides to sulfur. In this case, the soluble polysulfides can immediately transform to solid sulfur as soon as it appears, thus avoiding the shuttle of polysulfides. The galvanostatic intermittent titration method and in situ Raman are employed to supervise the transformation of polysulfides during the discharge/charge process. As a result, the composite shows excellent performance as the cathode of RT liquid/quasi-solid-state Na–S batteries in terms of specific capacities, rate capability, and cycle stability.

Owing to its remarkable energy density and specific capacity, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery has emerged as one of the most promising energy storage devices. Nevertheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish conversion of polysulfides significantly impede the practical application of Li-S batteries. Hence, a LaCoO 3 functional material with a unique honeycomb structure was designed as an efficient polysulfide converter. The honeycomb-structured LaCoO 3 not only exhibits strong bonding energy towards polysulfides but also possesses abundant adsorption sites on its surface. The LaCoO 3 material also shows excellent catalytic properties to quickly convert the adsorbed and aggregated polysulfides, effectively suppressing the shuttle effect. Moreover, the honeycomb structure of LaCoO 3 can facilitate the rapid wetting and infiltration of the electrolyte. Consequently, the Li-S cell with LaCoO 3 functionalized separator provides an areal specific capacity of 3.10 mAh cm −2 after 150 cycles under high sulfur loading of 6.52 mg cm −2 . Moreover, under practical conditions where the electrolyte content is as low as 7 μL mg −1 and the sulfur loading is 7.96 mg cm −2 , the Li-S battery equipped with LaCoO 3 -separator can still provide an areal specific capacity of 5.93 mAh cm −2 after 50 cycles.

Tin sulfide-anchored sulfur-hollow carbon nanospheres (S/AHCNS-SnS 2 ) composites are synthesized by uniformly dispersing conductive SnS 2 particles into hollow carbon nanospheres activated with potassium hydroxide, followed by impregnating sulfur. Surface morphology and structure of this composite are characterized using a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, X-ray power diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The first discharge capacity of the sample containing 10 wt.% SnS 2 exhibits a high special capacity value of about 1237.5 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C, and after 200 cycles retains 924 mAh g −1 . Tin sulfide particles play a favorable role on adsorption towards polysulfides which would influence electrochemical process. This strategy of immobilization of sulfur with small amount of metal sulfide particles anchored in AHCNS provides a considerable approach to elevate the sulfur loading, coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability for Li–S batteries.

This work introduces nickel (II) tetraphenylporphyrin (NiTPP) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive to simultaneously address polysulfide shuttle and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Mobile NiTPP species act as homogeneous catalysts with Ni–N 4 centers for rapid polysulfide redox mediation to suppress migration, while planar molecules featuring lithium-affinity capability migrate to the lithium metal surfaces, enabling uniform lithium flux and anode protection. NiTPP-modified electrolytes significantly enhance Li–S battery performance, demonstrated by 634.9 mAh g −1 at 4C, 758.3 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C (83.4% retention), and 757.5 mAh g −1 under high sulfur loading (2.9 mg cm −2 ) with lean electrolyte ( E / S = 5 μL mg −1 ), all with high Coulombic efficiency. Crucially, NiTPP, acting as a soluble dual-functional mediator enabling homogeneous operation in electrolytes, simplifies Li–S battery fabrication while demonstrating the commercial viability of molecularly engineered mobile active sites for stabilizing both electrodes in high-energy-density Li–S batteries.

Developing new electrode materials is one of the keys to improving the energy density of supercapacitors. In this article, a novel cobalt polysulfide/carbon nanofibers (C, N -Co x S y /CNF) film derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework is first prepared by a facile strategy. The composite material with two-dimensional leaf-shaped nanoarray neatly grown on the surface of carbon nanofibers is composed of CoS, CoS 2 , Co 9 S 8 , N -doped carbon nanosheets, and carbon nanofibers. It is found that the composite can not only increase the contact area with the electrolyte but also provide abundant redox-active sites and a Faraday capacitance for the entire electrode. The C, N -Co x S y /CNF composite exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, including a high capacity of up to 1080F g -1 at 1 A g -1 and a good rate capability (80.4 % from 1 A g -1 to 10 A g -1 ). A C, N -Co x S y /CNF//AC asymmetric supercapacitor device is assembled using C, N -Co x S y /CNF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, showing high energy density (37.29 Wh kg -1 @813.6 W kg -1 ) and good cycle stability (90.5% of initial specific capacitance at 10 g −1 after 5000 cycles). This C, N -Co x S y /CNF composite material may also be used as a potential electrode for future lithium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, etc .
