Montmorillonite-derived porous TiO2/SiO2 supported Pt catalysts for efficient toluene oxidation: synergistic effect and electronic interaction

Sisi Hu,Xiangwei Zhang,Jielong Cao,Qingze Chen,Runliang Zhu

The reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially the oxidation of highly toxic and chemically resistant toluene, remains a challenge in environmental catalysis. In this research, a porous TiO2/SiO2 support was initially fabricated through titanium pillaring of montmorillonite and then calcined and acid-leached as an efficient platform for Pt nanoparticle immobilization to yield Pt–TiO2/SiO2. The experimental data showed that the catalyst loaded with 0.37 wt.% Pt (0.37Pt–TiO2/SiO2) exhibits superior toluene oxidation performance, reaching a T90 of 190°C. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited remarkable water resistance, maintaining high efficiency even in the presence of 10% water vapour and outstanding long-term stability, with no substantial deactivation after 48 h of continuous operation. The performance improvement is explained by the high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on the support and the metal–support interaction between Pt and TiO2, characterized by electron transfer from TiO2 to Pt. This interaction facilitates the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules. In situ diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy explained the catalytic mechanism: toluene is sequentially transformed into benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoate intermediates, which are subsequently converted to maleic anhydride by opening the ring and eventually mineralized into CO2 and H2O. This work developed a high-performance, durable catalyst using cost-effective and abundant natural minerals, offering promising prospects for practical abatement of industrial VOCs.

Impact of Fe@Mn–hydrophobically modified SiO2 interaction strength on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis performance and CO2 selectivity

Chao Wang,Ting Fan,Shunfang Lv,Tianfu Zhang,Juan Zhang,Jiangang Chen

A series of hydrophobically modified MnO 2 -coated Fe 3 O 4 (Fe@Mn) catalysts were prepared to investigate the effect of the interaction strength between Fe@Mn and hydrophobically modified SiO 2 (SiO 2 -c) on their physicochemical properties, FTS performance and CO 2 selectivity, including granule mixing of Fe@Mn and SiO 2 -c (Fe@Mn+SiO 2 -c (g)), powder mixing of Fe@Mn and SiO 2 -c (Fe@Mn+SiO 2 -c (p)) and core-shell structure of Fe@Mn@SiO 2 -c. The interaction between Fe@Mn and SiO 2 -c evolves and strengthens with the structural progression from physically mixed to core-shell configurations. Contact angle measurements indicate that Fe@Mn@SiO 2 -c exhibits superior hydrophobicity compared to Fe@Mn+SiO 2 -c (g/p). Fe@Mn+SiO 2 -c (g/p) maintains a CO 2 selectivity comparable to that of Fe@Mn, while exhibiting significantly enhanced stability. Although Fe@Mn@SiO 2 -c shows a relatively lower CO conversion, it achieves the lowest CO 2 selectivity alongside a higher selectivity for light olefins. The study reveals that the altered surface microenvironment of Fe@Mn@SiO 2 -c is the key factor in suppressing the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction activity during FTS, thereby reducing CO 2 selectivity. This work elucidates the underlying mechanism by which the interaction mode between the Fe-based catalyst and the hydrophobic material influences the FTS performance, particularly the CO 2 selectivity.

Highly curved and flexible SiO2 fiber sponge via turbulence spinning for efficient and portable plasma/serum separation

Sendong Zhou,Huihe Chen,Zekun Cheng,Yuan Gao,Meng Zhao,Yu Wang,Qingli Xue,Zujing Feng,Shuting Hou,Yuanyuan Zhang,Rui Xu,Yahan Pang,Jianfeng Zhang,Hui Wu,Sen Lin

Blood analysis is essential for managing critically ill patients, yet plasma/serum separation in point-of-care testing (POCT) remains centrifugation-dependent, hindering utility in resource-limited settings. Conventional filtration materials suffer from poor mechanical strength, fragile structures, and suboptimal separation performance. Herein, we fabricate a silica microfiber sponge (Turb-SiO 2 ) with a 3D disordered network via a turbulence spinning technique. The material exhibits exceptional flexibility, retaining >64% initial stress after 2500 compression cycles, and superior breathability (99.51% air permeability, 0.12 mm H 2 O pressure drops) under compression. The Turb-SiO 2 achieves efficient plasma separation with filtrate hemoglobin at 15.7 mg dL −1 , matching centrifugation efficacy and outperforming commercial filters. Its crimped fiber structure minimizes hemolysis by eliminating sharp tips that can damage red blood cells. With advantages in weight, volume, cost and operability, the Turb-SiO 2 offers a high-performance solution for portable low-cost POCT blood separation. A highly curved, flexible SiO 2 fiber sponge produced by turbulence spinning enables rapid, portable plasma separation from whole blood.

High PLQY and Ultra-Stable Cs2ZnCl4/SiO2 Nano-Composite Particles From Lead-Free Perovskite Colloidal Quantum Dots

Lumen Chao,Ziyang Bao,Qiang Gu,Xiaoyun Mi,Quansheng Liu

All-inorganic lead-free Cs 2 ZnCl 4 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) attract significant attention due to their non-toxicity and unique optoelectronic properties. However, the yield of Cs 2 ZnCl 4 colloidal QDs synthesized via ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) remains extremely low, and their stability is poor, limiting their applications. Here, we report a post-processing strategy that employs mesoporous nano-SiO 2 to anchor Cs 2 ZnCl 4 QDs within its pores, creating spatial confinement that prevents Cs 2 ZnCl 4 QDs aggregation and quenching while passivating surface defects and reducing non-radiative recombination pathways. This strategy enables the powderization of Cs 2 ZnCl 4 colloidal QDs, and the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 /SiO 2 nano-composite particles (NCP) exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (CIE 0.15, 0.12). Compared to the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 colloidal QDs, the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 /SiO 2 NCP demonstrates a 10 times increase in PL intensity, with a high PLQY (74.28%) and an ultrafast photoluminescence lifetime (2.4 ns). Moreover, due to nano-SiO 2 protection, the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 /SiO 2 NCP exhibits excellent ambient conditions (>6 months, 86.6%) and harsh conditions (temperature, humidity, light, etc.) stability, which is superior to that of other reported halide perovskite QDs. This strategy offers a viable approach to address the challenges of low yield, low photoluminescence efficiency, and poor stability in colloidal perovskite QDs, thereby creating opportunities for their commercial application.

Superhydrophobic SiO2-protected MXene/ sericin/PVA flexible films for enhanced mechanical strength, infrared stealth, and EMI shielding

Nan Pang,Xiao Cheng,Xiaoqing Yin,Yanyan Wang,Wang Liu,Meijie Yu,Chengguo Wang,Chuanjian Zhou

Sericin bridging builds H-bond networks, delivering 91 MPa strength and 14.3 MJ m −3 toughness. • Discontinuous SiO 2 enables MXene-dominated IR stealth with a 107.8 °C temperature drop. • 34.4 dB EMI shielding is achieved at a thickness of only 63 μm. • PVA/SS matrix and superhydrophobic layer (155.9°) ensure long-term stability. • Gradient architectures enable reliable piezoresistive response for motion sensing. Developing flexible materials with integrated infrared (IR) stealth, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and long-term stability is essential for personal protection and smart wearables. Traditional MXene composites suffer from weak interfacial bonding, poor mechanical properties, easy oxidation, and the functional trade-off between hydrophobic protection and infrared stealth. Herein, a synergistic strategy of multi-level interfacial bridging and discontinuous superhydrophobic barrier was proposed to fabricate MXene/sericin (SS)/PVA flexible films with a micro-nano SiO 2 protective layer. Sericin acts as an interfacial bridge to construct dense and reversible hydrogen-bond networks, effectively improving mechanical performance. The optimized SMSP-35 film with 35 wt% MXene achieves a tensile strength of 91 MPa, a toughness of 14.3 MJ m −3 and 19.2% elongation at break. The discontinuous SiO 2 coating maintains the low-emissivity feature of MXene in the 8–14 μm band, reducing the radiation temperature of a 200 °C target by 107.8 °C. The film (63 μm) realizes an EMI shielding efficiency of 34.4 dB. Combined with the physical barrier of PVA, interfacial bridging effect of SS and superhydrophobic SiO 2 layer (155.9°), the film retains nearly original shielding performance after 5-month ambient exposure with outstanding oxidation resistance. It also exhibits reliable strain response for human motion monitoring. This work addresses the challenges associated with multifunctional incompatibility and limited stability, providing a viable design strategy for flexible multifunctional protective materials. Preparation of high-performance Fe-Si soft magnetic powder cores using complete and dense SiO2 coated powder

Jiaxin Gao,Zhuo Zhu,Qi Li,Yan Nie,Xian Wang

A complete, dense coating is essential for reducing eddy current losses in soft magnetic composites (SMCs) and improving their overall performance. In this study, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was utilized to modify the surface of Fe-Si powders through organosilane functionalization, followed by the hydrolysis-condensation reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to form a SiO 2 insulating layer. TEM, powder resistivity and electrochemical testing indicate a complete and dense surface coating on the powder. Furthermore, the surface modification of the powder with APTES reduces the impact of excess non-magnetic phase coating on the magnetic hysteresis loss of soft magnetic powder cores, which facilitates the regulation of magnetic permeability to obtain powder core samples with low loss and high direct current (DC) bias performance according to corresponding specifications. Experimental results show that for APTES-modified powders, when the TEOS dosage is 5 wt%, the fabricated soft magnetic powder core with a permeability grade of 60 μ exhibits excellent comprehensive performance: a DC bias retention of 70.7% at 100 kHz/100 Oe, a core loss of 1141 mW/cm 3 at 100 kHz/100 mT, and a low permeability temperature coefficient of 30 ppm/°C within −20 °C to 140 °C, indicating temperature stability. This study provides guidance on the fabrication of high-power, high-current soft magnetic powder cores and on controlling magnetic permeability specifications while minimizing losses.

Synergistic effects of ammonium polyphosphate/nano-SiO2 aerogel on the properties of waste polypropylene/bamboo fiber composites

Yongqi Shi,Chenyang Li,Lili Yu,Binqing Sun,Hui Li

High-performance flame-retardant rPP/BF composites are successfully fabricated via a vacuum impregnation strategy for co-loading APP and nano-SiO₂aerogel. • The Z6 composite achieves an excellent balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties, meeting the GB 8624–2012 B1 flame-retardant standard with an 89.4% increase in char residue at 600 ℃ compared to the unmodified control. • APP and nano-SiO₂aerogel exhibit a synergistic effect, enhancing thermal stability through dense char layer formation and nanoporous thermal insulation, respectively. • The optimized Z6 composite satisfies the mechanical property requirements of GB/T 29500–2013, demonstrating its potential for structural applications in construction and outdoor decoration. Recycled polypropylene/bamboo fiber (rPP/BF) composites were fabricated using bamboo fiber (BF) as the reinforcing filler and recycled polypropylene (rPP) as the matrix resin, which offered an effective strategy for the recycling and resource utilization of waste petroleum-based plastics. The rPP/BF composites were subjected to interfacial modification: bamboo fibers were treated with 2 wt% KH792, and 2 wt% PP-g-MAH was applied as a compatibilizer for the rPP matrix. To further improve the mechanical, physical properties and thermal stability of the composites, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and nano-SiO₂ aerogel were introduced as flame retardants. The effects of various flame retardants and modification routes on the performance of recycled rPP/BF composites were systematically investigated by oxygen index test, FTIR and TG analytical methods. Test results indicated that after different flame-retardant modifications, the elastic modulus and modulus of rupture of the rPP/BF composites decreased by 13.36%-47.63% and 16.76%-66.17%, respectively. The 72 h water absorption increased by 2.5%-42.5%. With the exception of group Z6, the thickness swelling rate after water absorption rose by 7.14%-114.29% for all other samples. The synergistic effect of APP and nano-SiO₂ aerogel significantly improved the flame retardancy of PP/BF composites, raising their flame-retardant grade to the flame-resistant level (≥ 32%), which was superior to that achieved by APP or nano-SiO₂ aerogel alone. FTIR confirmed that the flame retardants were successfully incorporated into the PP/BF composites. Furthermore, owing to the synergistic effect between APP and nano-SiO₂ aerogel, group Z6 displayed the lowest mass loss and the optimal thermal stability over the whole testing temperature range. A Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Immunosensor Based on Core–Shell SiO2-PEI@Ag NPs Nanocomposites for MPA Detection

Yadi Yuan,Jingming Zhou,Hongliang Liu,Haili Wang,Yanhua Qi,Enping Liu,Yongxin Li,Aiping Wang

In recent years, food safety concerns associated with veterinary drug residues have aroused significant public attention, highlighting the critical need for continuous monitoring in both animal-derived foods and the environment to safeguard public health. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), a major anabolic steroid widely used in animal husbandry, poses potential human health risks according to recent studies. Although conventional analytical techniques based on chromatography and immunological assays are effective, they often suffer from complex operations, the need for skilled personnel, high cost, and time consumption. To overcome these limitations, electrochemical immunosensors modified with advanced nanomaterials offer a promising alternative. Herein, a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor was developed for trace MPA detection utilizing core–shell SiO2-PEI@Ag nanoparticles as the sensing matrix. In this nanocomposite, the structural synergy between the SiO2core and outer Ag NPs shell not only provides a high-density platform for specific antibody immobilization, but also drastically expands the electroactive surface area and accelerates electron transfer to maximize signal amplification. Benefiting from these synergistic advantages, the constructed immunosensor exhibited a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.014 ng/mL and a wide linear range of 0.03–100 ng/mL. Furthermore, the recovery rates in pork and milk samples were 91.32–97.29% and 95.14–102.54%, respectively. In addition, negligible cross-reaction was observed toward structurally related steroid hormones related to MPA and common antibiotics. The immunosensor shows good stability, reproducibility, and accuracy, demonstrating great potential as a promising candidate to complement conventional tools for future MPA residue screening.

High-performance nanothermometry system with controlled sensitivity based on dual-emission CsPbBr3/CdTe@SiO2 core/shell nanocomposites

Jiannan Sun,Pan Zhang,Ke Yan,Aizhao Pan,Christophe Len,Weiyi Ouyang,Chengyu Shi,Xinyi Shi,Jun Hong

Quantum dots (QDs) with dual-emission property have garnered significant attention as prototype platforms for temperature measurement due to their self-calibration capabilities and high sensitivity. The assembly and property modulation of this materials hold great research value. In this work, we propose a strategy to utilize dendritic mesoporous SiO 2 core–shell spheres to encapsulate dual QDs, enabling the constructing of dual-emission fluorescent temperature sensing system. By encapsulating CsPbBr 3 and CdTe QDs in SiO 2 core–shell spheres, we developed a dual-emission temperature probe that employs two thermometry modes: peak wavelength spacing variation and fluorescence intensity ratio. This probe offers advantages such as high thermal stability, excellent fit, and high sensitivity. Additionally, inspired by the concept of series sliding resistors, we introduced a novel approach to adjust the probe’s sensitivity by treating the fluorescence intensity and peak wavelength of the dual QDs as the “sliding resistor”. This innovation results in a temperature fluorescence sensing system with tunable sensitivity. We also explored the potential applications of these probes in temperature measurement, light-emitting diodes, and fluorescent anti-counterfeiting. Our research presents an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance dual-emission fluorescence temperature sensing systems with customizable sensitivity.

Immobilization of horseradish peroxidase on ZnO nanowires/macroporous SiO2 composites for the complete decolorization of anthraquinone dyes

Huaiyan Sun,Xinyu Jin,Feng Jiang,Ruifeng Zhang

A zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires/macroporous silicon dioxide composite was used as support to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) simply by in situ cross-linking method. As cross-linker was adsorbed on the surface of ZnO nanowires, the cross-linked HRP was quite different from the traditional cross-linking enzyme aggregates on both structure and catalytic performance. Among three epoxy compounds, diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DDE) was the best cross-linker, with which the loading amount of HRP with p I of 5.3 reached as high as 118.1 mg/g and specific activity was up to 14.9 U/mg-support. The mass loss of HRP cross-linked with DDE was negligible during 50-H leaching at 4 °C, and the thermal stability of the immobilized HRP was also quite good. The catalytic performance of immobilized HRP to decolorize anthraquinone dye was explored by using Reactive Blue 19 (RB 19) and Acid Violet 109 (AV 109) as model substrates. The results indicated that the immobilized HRP exhibited high decolorization efficiency and good reusability. The decolorization efficiency reached 94.3% and 95.9% for AV 109 and RB 19 within the first 30 Min, respectively. A complete decolorization of these two dyes has been realized within 2–3 H by using this new biocatalysis system.

Au NPs@SiO2 assisted solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor of Cu4RuO5 for ultrasensitive detection of tilmicosin in milk

Hanyue Jiang,Juan Lu,Wenzhuo Wang,Pengfei Han,Guangping Ma,Tengying Ma,Li Tian,Jing Wang

In this study, a porous bimetallic oxide Cu 4 RuO 5 with a high specific surface area was prepared via electrospinning followed by high-temperature calcination. This oxide exhibited a significant electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal when reacting with S 2 O 8 2− . Utilizing this bimetallic oxide as an ECL material, we constructed a simple solid-state ECL sensor, in conjunction with Au NPs@SiO 2 , for the sensitive detection of tilmicosin in milk. The sensor was constructed using a layered modification approach. Initially, the bimetallic oxide Cu 4 RuO 5 was modified onto the electrode surface. Cu 4 RuO 5 not only serves as a luminescent reagent but also promotes electron transfer within the system due to its large specific surface area and porosity, achieving amplification of the first-stage ECL signal. Subsequently, Au NPs@SiO 2 was modified onto the oxide surface. The SiO 2 shell effectively shields the system from complex matrix interferences while providing a large specific surface area for the immobilization of Au NPs. The Au NPs further accelerate electron transfer, thereby achieving amplification of the second-stage signal. Based on this two-step amplification strategy, the constructed ECL sensor exhibits a linear response range for tilmicosin from 1.0 × 10 −13 to 1.0× 10 −6  mol L −1 , yielding a detection limit of 2.01 × 10 −14  mol L −1 (3σ/m). This sensor combines high sensitivity, good selectivity, and excellent stability, providing a novel method for the rapid determination of antibiotic residues in food, successfully implemented to enable rapid determination of tilmicosin in milk matrices.

Thermodynamic insights into the Yb2O3–Al2O3–SiO2 system: A focus on the phase equilibria at 1600°C

Sheng Li,Junjie Shi,Yuchao Qiu,Yongyi Zhou,Xiaoyu Gong,Hongjian Tang,Dong Li,Xiao Sai,Jianzhang Li

Phase relationships in the Yb 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 system are critical for the design and corrosion protection of environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), the available data remain scarce and primarily limited to studies from the 1990s. The isothermal phase diagram of the Yb 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 system at 1600°C was conducted using a classical high-temperature equilibrium quenching technique, followed by XRD, SEM, and EPMA phase analysis. The data were reported in the form of liquidus projections and an isothermal phase diagram at 1600°C, with one single-phase region, six two-phase regions, and seven three-phase regions. A comparison of the liquid phase regions at 1550°C and 1600°C revealed a systematic expansion with increasing temperature, consistent with thermodynamic expectations. The experimental results from the present work are essential for the development of a thermodynamic database for rare earth oxides, providing vital guidance for designing next-generation EBCs.
