Corrosion protection coatings embedded with silane-functionalized rGO/SiO2 nanocontainers: Enhancing dispersive and corrosion-inhibitor loading capabilities

Dandan Li,Han Peng,Zaiwen Lin,Jiahui Zhu,Jing Yu,Jingyuan Liu,Rongrong Chen,Qi Liu,Jun Wang

Taking advantage of the excellent barrier properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets and the loading capacity of mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ), silane-functionalized rGO/SiO 2 nanocontainers are synthesized and, after loaded with benzotriazole (BTA), composite corrosion protection coatings are prepared. The XRD , FTIR, XPS , SEM , and TEM are used to confirm the successful preparation of silane-functionalized rGO/SiO 2 nanocontainers, and BET and UV–visible measurements are used to estimate the loading and release behavior of BTA. Dispersion stability of the nanocontainers is observed, the surface morphology , wettability , and water absorption of coatings are characterized by SEM, water contact angle, and weight method, respectively. The corrosion behavior of pristine and scratched composite coatings is characterized by EIS , the effect of released BTA is further confirmed. The results show that silane-functionalized rGO/SiO 2 nanocontainers possess excellent dispersibility and load capacity, reduce defects and micropores in composite coatings, and provide improved permeability resistance, corrosion resistance , and self-repairing performance.

Preparation and properties of super hydrophobic cotton fabric constructed by modified nano-SiO2 hybrid fluoro-epoxy copolymer

Chengmin Hou,Ze Fan,Jiaqi Yang

Most of the super hydrophobic cotton fabric surfaces changed the original properties of cotton fabric and cannot be continuously used for oil-water separation. In this paper, the fluorine-containing epoxy polymer P(GMA- r -DFMA) was reacted with KH550 modified nano-SiO 2 to obtain an organic-inorganic hybrid super hydrophobic solution. By dipping process, the super hydrophobic cotton fabric surface was obtained. P(GMA- r -DFMA) can reduce the surface energy of cotton fabric, and modified silica can improve the surface roughness of cotton fabric to achieve super hydrophobic effect. The optimum parameters (polymer concentration, soaking time, drying time and drying temperature) for constructing super hydrophobic cotton fabric surface were explored. The optimal parameters are polymer concentration 5 mg/mL, soaking time 5 h, drying time 4 h, and drying temperature 120 °C. Under the optimal conditions, the water contact angle of the modified cotton fabric surface is 162±3 o and the water rolling angle is 10±1 o . The study on surface self-cleaning property of modified cotton fabric shows that modified cotton fabric can be restored to clean state after being soiled by toner and washed by deionized water. When the oils were n -hexane, n -octane and trichloromethane, the oil-water separation efficiency of the modified cotton fabric could reach 98%, 98% and 96%, and the effect was stable. The surface of modified cotton fabric has obvious silver mirror phenomenon. The results of Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that the surface of cotton fabric was smooth before modification, but many small bumps and folds were added on the fabric surface after super hydrophobic modification, and the roughness became larger. The super hydrophobic coating is very thin and does not change the color, softness and other properties of the cotton fabric.

Polyethylene glycol-enhanced phosphate-modified chitosan/SiO2 hybrid aerogel for efficient uranium(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution

Yongqi Zhang,Jiahao Luo,Jun Liao,Congcong Ding,Mei Tang,Lielin Wang

A PEG-enhanced phosphate modification strategy was proposed for chitosan-SiO 2 aerogel. • PEG improves structural stability while phosphate introduces U(VI)-binding sites. • CSA/PEG-PO 4 exhibits a high U(VI) capacity of 496.98 mg g −1 at pH = 4. • Amino, hydroxyl and phosphate groups synergistically promote U(VI) adsorption. • The aerogel shows potential for efficient uranium removal from acidic wastewater. Uranium contamination has become an important environmental issue because of its toxicity and radiological hazards. In this work, a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-enhanced phosphate-functionalized chitosan-silica hybrid aerogel (CSA/PEG-PO 4 ) was successfully prepared by the sol-gel method and freeze-drying. The structure and surface properties of the aerogel were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET and XPS. Compared with the chitosan/silica aerogel (CSA), PEG modification improved the adsorption performance, while phosphate modification further enhanced the adsorption capacity toward U(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity was 496.98 mg g −1 (pH 4.0, m/V = 1 g L −1 , 150 min, 298 K, 150 rpm), while the removal efficiency reached 97.9%. The adsorbent also showed good selectivity toward U(VI), maintaining removal efficiencies above 87% in the presence of common coexisting ions such as Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ . The pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided a better fit to the adsorption data. Intraparticle diffusion analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion was not the only rate-controlling step. FT-IR and XPS analyses indicated that hydroxyl, amino and phosphate groups were the main active sites for U(VI) adsorption. XRD results confirmed that the aerogel maintained a stable amorphous framework after adsorption, indicating good structural stability during the adsorption process. Overall, CSA/PEG-PO 4 is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Incorporation of Carbon Into ZrO2–SiO2 Powder Through Combustion Synthesis and Its Influences on the Sintered Ceramics

Le Fu,Bohan Wang,Zihua Lei,Mingxi Deng,Guanghua Liu

The in situ formation of carbon fillers has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to eliminate the agglomeration of carbon fillers in ceramic composites. In this study, combustion synthesis was employed to in situ incorporate carbon into a ZrO 2 –SiO 2 ceramic powder using CO 2 gas as the carbon source and magnesium powder as the exothermic medium. The resulting disordered carbon is uniformly distributed within the powder matrix. Furthermore, magnesium element is simultaneously incorporated into the powder as a byproduct. The co-presence of carbon and magnesium elements synergistically enhances the solid-state reaction between ZrO 2 and SiO 2 during sintering, facilitating the formation of ZrSiO 4 at a significantly reduced temperature of 1080°C. Meanwhile, the solid-state reaction significantly promotes the densification of the ceramic composite. The incorporated carbon exhibits strong bonding with the ceramic matrix and remains stable within the matrix up to at least 1000°C. Compared with conventional ZrSiO 4 , the ZrSiO 4 phase formed in this study exhibits much lower decomposition temperature in range of 1000°C–1200°C. Molten copper exhibits pronounced corrosion toward the ceramic composite, primarily through reactions with the SiO 2 phase released from the decomposition of ZrSiO 4 .

Synthesis of UiO-66-NH2@SiO2 with a multistage pore structure for effective adsorption of organic pollutants

Wang Tingting,Yue Xiaoju,Han Lin,Wang Jinnong,Zhang Yuzhen,Tang Xiaofeng,Wang Shifeng

We reported anchoring mesoporous silica onto the microporous metal–organic frameworks (MOF) (UiO-66-NH2) to obtain a hierarchical porous framework (UiO-66-NH2@SiO2). This strategy maintains the high specific surface area (SA) of the MOF and addresses the mass transfer issue frequently encountered in microporous materials, providing more possibilities for subsequent modified structural frameworks. The structural characteristics of UiO-66-NH2@SiO2 were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, surface analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In this work, the specific SA of the composite material was 196.667 m2/g, which decreased due to the occupation of some pores by anchored silica. Adsorption experiments showed that the composite material had a better adsorption effect (Congo red, 393.83 mg/g; bromophenol blue, 446.46 mg/g) than UiO-66-NH2, with electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding being the main driving forces. Therefore, this is a material that has a positive impact on dye adsorption. The strategy proposed in this work has potential applications not only in the construction of new materials but also in the exploration of dye adsorbents.

Controlling electromagnetic and mechanical behaviors of geopolymer matrix with nano-SiO2@Fe3O4 magnetofluid for soft magnetic applications

Gonghui Gu,Tao Ma,Feng Chen,Chengjia Han,Heng Li,Fang Xu

Nano-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 magnetofluid modified geopolymer (NMMG) is presenting promising application potential in the field of magnetic building materials by virtue of its high magnetic permeability . This work aims to reveal the modification mechanisms of nano-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 magnetofluid on the electromagnetic and mechanical behaviors of geopolymer matrix, thus providing theoretical guidance for the engineering applications of NMMG. The results show that the introduction of nano-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 magnetofluid enhances the magnetic exchange energy between adjacent magnetic moments inside the geopolymer, thus weakening the coercivity by intensifying the rotation of magnetic domains inside the geopolymer, which provides a new idea for the application of NMMG in the field of soft magnetic construction materials. In addition, when the concentration of nano-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 magnetofluid reaches 9.4 vol%, good balance is found in the electromagnetic and mechanical behaviors of NMMG material. In that regard, NMMG can achieve satisfactory mechanical performance, ensuring as well low eddy current and hysteresis losses under alternating magnetic field , which reflects its great potential in soft magnetic applications.

Environmentally friendly tea saponin foam detergents costabilized by GO-OH/SiO2 nanoparticles for removing radioactive surface contaminants

Datong Liu,Sijie Lei,Yang Hu,Zhanguo Li,Hailing Xi,Xiaoyan Lin

Currently, bare silica nanoparticles with low surface activity and weak stabilizing foam ability have restricted applicability in treating surface radioactive pollutants. To address potential issues with SiO 2 as a foam stabilizer , a highly efficient foam stabilizer was fabricated by compounding silica with hydroxylated graphene oxide (GO-OH), which was prepared by hydrothermal modification of graphene oxide (GO). Then, an environmentally friendly foam detergent with high stability and high decontamination efficiency was developed using the natural surfactant tea saponin (TAS) as a foaming agent and a composite of silica and GO-OH (GO-OH/SiO 2 ) as a foam stabilizer, which is named tea saponin foam detergent. For different types of surfactants, the structural and morphological characteristics of GO-OH, such as hydrophilic and surface oxygen groups, as well as the synergistic influence of GO-OH with SiO 2 on foamability, foam stability, and detergency of the foam detergent, were studied. As a consequence, the TAS foam detergent has good stability with a drain half-life of 68 min. By hydrothermal modification of GO, the contact angle of water on GO-OH in air dropped to 63.2°, which was lower than that (73.0°) on GO. Furthermore, the hydrophilicity of GO-OH increased, and more oxygen-containing groups on GO-OH enhanced its absorption and enrichment of the radionuclide uranium and improved the decontamination rate of the TAS foam detergent. Moreover, when GO-OH was combined with SiO 2 , the dispersion and stability of SiO 2 in the foam detergent improved, and the foam stability of the detergent subsequently further improved. Adding 2 wt% SiO 2 and 0.1 wt% GO-OH to the detergent enhanced the foam drainage half-life of the detergent from 40 min to 68 min and improved the stability of the detergent by 70%. In addition, the synergistic action of GO-OH/SiO 2 with TAS surfactant increased the liquid film thickness of the foam and the airflow resistance to support the weight-bearing capacity of the foam skeleton. As a result, it slowed the rate of foam disproportionation , reduced the bubble size, increased the bubble number, and finally improved the foam stability of the detergent. For simulated radioactive uranium pollutants on the surfaces of glass, stainless steel , and tiles, the foam detergent with the synergistic action of GO-OH/SiO 2 and TAS surfactant had decontamination rates of 91.7%, 91.16% and 91.76%, respectively, which were 14.96%, 15.67% and 19.39% higher than that of TAS foam detergent without GO-OH/SiO 2 . The synergistic enhancement of GO-OH and SiO 2 on foam stability and its adsorption and combination action with uranyl ions would be the main reasons to improve the detergency of the TAS foam detergent. Therefore, TAS foam detergent stabilized synergistically by GO-OH/SiO 2 with high stability and efficient decontamination will be widely applied in nuclear emergencies and decommissioning decontamination of nuclear facilities.

Nitrogen-rich carbon/SiO2 nanotubes composites prepared by self-assembly as high-performance anode lithium-ion battery

Guoqiang Qin,Zhitong Jia,Ao Li,Songyuan Sun,Zhibei Liu,Chang-ling Zhuang,Jingbo Chen

Silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) has huge reserves and relatively high theoretical specific capacity (1965 mAh g −1 ) on the earth, so it is recognized by many researchers as one of the anode materials for the next generation lithium-ion battery (LIBs). However, compared with commercial graphite materials, silicon-based anode materials are severely limited in wide application because of their poor conductivity , low lithium-ion (Li + ) diffusivity and huge volume effect, which lead to obvious capacity attenuation and poor rate performance. Herein, we developed a simple method to prepare silica nanotubes (SNTs) by sol-gel method with Cetrimonium Bromide-Disodium edetate dihydrate (CTAB-EDTA) template. SNTs were modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to form SNTs with amino groups (SNTs-NH 2 ). The SiO 2 tubes were coated with N−doped carbon layer by self-assembly of amino carboxyl groups of tartaric acid , melamine and SNTs-NH 2 . The unique hollow tubular structure can maintain the stability of the structure and interface to a certain extent during the lithium/de-lithium process, thus improving the cycle stability of the electrode. In addition, N-doped carbon layer can not only improve the electron migration rate, but also contribute to the storage and transfer of Li + . Compared with the original SNTs, N−doped carbon-coated SNTs (NC@SNTs) has a reversible capacity of 972 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , a cycle stability capacity of 634 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Therefore, the unique template and self-assembly process can prepare anode composites with excellent properties. It is of great significance to the large-scale production and commercial application of silicon−based anode LIBs in the future.

Co-Impregnated N-Doped Carbon Nanotube/SiO2-Modified Separators as Efficient Polysulfide Barriers for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Yuemin Li,Xinlong Bao,Xinwei Wang,Jianxun Zhao,Peng Chen,Heng Liu,Huan Wang,Lianshan Sun,Wanqiang Liu

The shuttling effect of polysulfide and its sluggish reaction kinetics are the primary issues with lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this work, an improved coimpregnation technique was used to add cobalt atoms to nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co-NCNTs) and compound them onto mesoporous silicon (SiO2). Co-NCNTs/SiO2 composites were then used as modification materials for Li–S battery separators, which were capable of physical and chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfide (LiPSs). Between silica and LiPSs, there is chemical as well as physical adsorption in the mesoporous structure of the mesoporous silica. Cobalt has a significant capacity for adsorbing LiPSs, and the cobalt site possesses catalytic activity that can promote the redox kinetics of LiPSs. NCNTs have better electrical conductivity and a dense network structure, which facilitates electrolyte penetration and Li+ transfer. As a result, Li–S batteries built with a modified separator made of Co-NCNTs/SiO2 exhibit good capacity, cycle performance, and multiplier performance, with a 1314 mA h g–1 initial capacity at 0.2 C. After 200 cycles at 1 C, the capacity is 448 mA h g–1. This work proved that Co-NCNTs/SiO2 can efficiently adsorb LiPSs and accelerate their transformation, which slows down polysulfides’ shuttle effect and speeds up their slow kinetics.

Zhimin Cao,Mingyi Zhu,Xuxu Dong,De Liu,Pan Cao

An innovative antifouling composite coating comprising dopamine (DA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and silica (SiO2) was developed through a straightforward and environmentally friendly approach. Initially, silica nanoparticles comodified with DA and PEI were meticulously deposited onto 304 stainless steel surfaces pretreated with dopamine to achieve a uniformly distributed nanocomposite surface. Comprehensive analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement (CA), and 3D optical profilometry, were employed to affirm the successful preparation of the silica nanocomposite coatings and the effective grafting of MAG II. The antibacterial and antibiofilm performance of the DA/PEI/SiO2-modified surface was rigorously assessed usingVibrio natriegens(V. natriegens), yielding compelling results indicating a substantial 51.4% reduction in biofilm formation on the SS-DA/PEI/SiO2sample surfaces, coupled with an impressive 95.2% decrease inV. natriegensadhesion. This pioneering research introduces an innovative strategy for the development of antimicrobial surfaces with promising applications in medical devices, aquaculture, and related fields. Keywords:surface modification;DA/PEI/SiO2nanocoating;antimicrobial performance;stability properties

Unidirectional infiltrated PI/SiO2 composite aerogels with a confined reinforcing strategy for integrated thermal and acoustic insulation

Huilong Shao,Shuang Zhao,Zhifang Fei,Xiaohua Li,Zhen Zhang,Kunfeng Li,Jun Chen,Peng Zhang,Zichun Yang

It is of great significance to develop integrated thermal insulation and noise reduction materials for energy saving and pollution control. As a nanoporous material , aerogels have excellent thermal and acoustic properties , however, the thermal stability of organic aerogels is insufficient, and the mechanical properties of inorganic aerogels limit their practical application. Herein, we designed a confined reinforcing strategy for organic-inorganic composite aerogels with high strength and excellent acoustic insulation properties . A directional freezing technology was utilized to control the pore structure of a polyimide (PI) aerogel, and then a continuous SiO 2 aerogel was filled in the unidirectional pore channels, forming a double-network structure consisting of both PI and SiO 2 aerogels. The results showed that the compressive strength of the composites was 1.83 MPa at 10% strain, the initial thermal decomposition temperature was about 530 °C, and the lowest thermal conductivity was 22.37 mW m −1 ·k −1 at radial direction . Moreover, the average sound transmission loss (STL) of the composites with an 18 mm thickness was 30–33 dB in the range of 500–6300 Hz. This confined reinforcing strategy can safeguard fragile aerogels while maximize their inherent characteristics, which offers a novel approach to the creation of multi-functional aerogel composites.

High-efficient and environmental-friendly PTFE@SiO2 core-shell additive with excellent AW/EP properties in PAO6

Na Wang,Honggang Wang,Junfang Ren,Gui Gao,Gengrui Zhao,Yawen Yang,Jinqing Wang

Environmental-friendly polytetrafluoroethylene@silica (PTFE@SiO 2 ) composite particles characterized by core-shell structure were synthesized. The tests demonstrated that the synthesized particles had good dispersibility and stability in poly-α-olefin 6 (PAO6) and its corrosion resistance was better than zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). The extreme pressure (EP) and tribological tests evidenced that PTFE@SiO 2 particles possessed superior EP and anti-wear (AW) properties, which could enhance the wear-resistance and load-bearing capacities of PAO6 in high efficiency, whereas the tribological performance was greatly affected by the load. Besides, EP tests for different kinds of base oils demonstrated that the addition of PTFE@SiO 2 particles could significantly improve the bearing capacity of these base oils, and the corresponding performances were also better than ZDDP. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectrum characterizations proved that there was an organic-inorganic co-extruded transfer film generated on the worn surface, and a possible lubrication mechanism on this basis was also put forward.
