Tremendous efforts have been focusing on the improvement of p-type (Bi, Sb) 2 Te 3 -based thermoelectric materials for commercial applications. In this study, we achieve versatile interface engineering through a surface decoration of Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 by amorphous Sb 2 S 3 combining with spark plasma sintering, which introduces semi-coherent Sb/Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 interfaces and dopes S into Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 . Semi-coherent Sb/Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 interfaces strongly scatter phonons and lower energy carriers, leading to decreased thermal conductivity and increased Seebeck coefficient, while the electrical conductivity is not sacrificed due to the compromise of the slightly reduced carrier mobility by interfacial scattering and the increased carrier concentration by S doping. Benefited from the decoupled thermoelectric properties, a significantly enhanced power factor of 3345.40 μW m −1 K −2 and a low thermal conductivity of 0.78 W m −1 K −1 is obtained in Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 -0.4%Sb 2 S 3 , leading to a high peak zT of ∼ 1.31 at 330 K, which shows a 54% enhancement compared with pristine Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 . Moreover, a conversion efficiency of ∼ 7.6% can be predicted in a single leg Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 -0.4%Sb 2 S 3 -based module under a cold side temperature of 300 K and hot side temperature of 480 K. This study paves a facile amorphous Sb 2 S 3 induced interface engineering strategy for the development of high performance (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 -based thermoelectric materials.

Two zircon-structured ceramics AEuV 2 O 8 (A = Bi, La) were prepared with optimal sintering temperatures of 900 °C and 1375 °C, respectively. They exhibited sharp contrast performances with medium ε r ∼ 28.7 ± 0.1, Q × f ∼ 14,000 ± 300 GHz, and large positive τ f ∼ 75.7 ± 2.0 ppm/°C for BiEuV 2 O 8 , whereas low ε r ∼ 10.4 ± 0.1 Q × f ∼ 25,100 ± 300 GHz, and negative τ f ∼ − 40.7 ± 2.0 ppm/°C for LaEuV 2 O 8 . The rattling effect at the A-site was more dominant in determining microwave dielectric properties than that of compressed V 5+ at the B-site. It resulted in the higher ε r , lower Q × f and τ ε , and larger τ f of BiEuV 2 O 8 than those of LaEuV 2 O 8 . Besides, their Q × f was related with the relative density, bond valence and FWHM of the B 1 g Raman mode.

Compliance mismatch between the artificial blood vessel and the host vessel leads to abnormal hemodynamics and is a major mechanical trigger of intimal hyperplasia. Efforts have been made to achieve higher compliance of artificial blood vessels. However, the preparation of artificial blood vessels with compliance matching to host vessels has not been realized. A bi-layered artificial blood vessel was successfully prepared by dip-coating and electrospinning composite method using poly(L-Lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) and thermoplastic poly(ether urethane) (TPU). In the case of a certain wall thickness (200 μm), thickness ratios of the PLCL inner layer (dip-coating method) and TPU outer layer (electrospinning method) were controlled at 0:1, 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 1:0 respectively and the compliance, radial tensile properties, burst pressure, and suture retention strength were investigated. Results showed compliance value of the artificial blood vessel decreased with the increase of the thickness ratio, which suggested the compliance of the bi-layered artificial blood vessel can be regulated by adjusting the ratio of the inner and outer layer thicknesses. In the six different artificial blood vessels, the one with thickness ratio of 1:9 not only had high compliance (8.768 ± 0.393%/100 mmHg) but also can guarantee the other mechanical properties, such as the radial breaking strength (6.333 ± 0.689 N/mm), burst pressure (534.473 ± 20.899 mmHg), and suture retention strength (300.773 ± 9.351 cN). The proposed artificial blood vessel preparation method is expected to achieve compliance matching with the host vessel. It is beneficial for eliminating abnormal hemodynamics and reducing intimal hyperplasia.

Perovskites have attracted considerable interest as potential photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen generation. Nonetheless, their intrinsic instability in aqueous media significantly constrains their practical deployment in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. To address this challenge, we propose a versatile strategy for stabilizing Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 (CBB) perovskite photocatalysts through combining zwitterionic ligand encapsulation with Sn 4+ doping. The zwitterionic ligand, synthesized by reacting 4-bromobutyric acid (BBA) with oleylamine (OLA), was employed to passivate the perovskite surface by anchoring to both Bi 3+ and Br − sites, effectively mitigating surface defects. Notably, Sn 4+ doping is essential for aqueous stability, as the incorporation of Sn 4+ not only enhances the intrinsic stability of CBB but also reinforces the binding affinity of surface ligands. As a result, the Sn 4+ -doped CBB (CBBS x ) with ligand encapsulation demonstrates remarkable stability, retaining its structural integrity in water for over six months and withstanding more than three cycles of photocatalytic testing. Importantly, this strategy demonstrates considerable generality, as it can be readily extended to the synthesis of other halide perovskites. Specifically, the MoS x -loaded Sn 4+ :Cs 3 Bi 2 Br x I 9-x (MoS x /CBBIS 0.2 ) composite achieves a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 18.2 mmol h −1 g −1 , which represents the highest performance reported to date among Bi-based perovskite photocatalysts.

Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is an emerging metal-free photocatalyst with high stability but is plagued by low photocatalytic efficiency due to the rapid charge carrier recombination behavior. Herein, Bi-doped graphitic carbon nitride nanotubes (BCN nanotubes) with a porous structure have been facilely prepared by one-step thermal polymerization of mixtures of melamine, urea and bismuth nitrate pentahydrate under an Ar atmosphere. With unique structural advantages for charge carrier transfer, light harvesting, and large surface area, the as-prepared BCN nanotubes exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine (Rh) B with a 26.8-fold higher reaction rate than that of PCN under visible light irradiation. This work provides informative principles about the synthesis of PCN with controlled morphology and element doping simultaneously for the photocatalytic degradation of chemical pollutants.

Bismuth (Bi)-doped glass and fiber materials exhibit excellent optical performance and have potential in fields such as fiber communication and tunable lasers. However, the preparation of Bi-doped glass and fiber with high optical activity is still confronted with huge challenges. This study proposes a germanium oxide hybridization strategy to enhance near-infrared emission in Bi-doped glass. In addition, by the systematical optimization of the optical response and processability of the glass system, Bi-doped glass fibers are successfully constructed. The constructed glass fibers have excellent optical performance, and the enhanced amplified spontaneous emission is realized. They show potentials for applications in broadband fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers.

Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed. • Bi N/Bi O bonds enhanced interfacial charge transfer. • BHG-3 achieved 97.26% MB removal under visible light. • ·O 2 − and h + were identified as dominant active species. • BHG-3 showed good stability and broad pollutant applicability. To integrate the visible-light-harvesting capability of g-C 3 N 4 with the interfacial electron-transfer function of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), a Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 (BHG) direct Z -scheme heterojunction was constructed via a facile hydrothermal assembly strategy. Structural and surface chemical characterizations confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction, where strong interfacial coupling was established through Bi–N/Bi–O coordination bonds and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic analyses revealed that the BHG heterojunction markedly promoted charge separation and migration, as evidenced by an enhanced photocurrent response, reduced interfacial charge-transfer resistance, and suppressed recombination of photogenerated carriers. The optimized BHG-3 composite exhibited excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity, achieving 97.26% removal of methylene blue (MB) within 40 min, with an apparent reaction rate constant 3.39 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, BHG-3 showed good cycling stability, favorable tolerance to selected coexisting inorganic anions and degradation capability toward several model organic contaminants. Radical trapping experiments and mechanistic analyses confirmed a direct Z -scheme charge-transfer pathway, in which electrons enriched on g-C 3 N 4 and holes retained on Bi-HOF synergistically participated in pollutant degradation. The possible photodegradation pathway of MB over BHG-3 was further proposed based on LC-MS analysis. This work provides insight into interfacial charge regulation in HOF-based photocatalysts and offers a feasible strategy for developing efficient visible-light-driven systems for organic pollutant degradation.

The rational design of interfacial active sites is crucial for enhancing the activity and durability of Pd-based electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Herein, an ultrathin PdNi metallene (PdNiene) with unique asymmetric Pd─O─Bi oxo-bridge sites (PdNi-O-Biene) is synthesized via a multi-step hydrothermal method. The ultrathin 2D nanosheet structure of the metallene enables abundant exposure of Pd active sites. Notably, Ni incorporation facilitates OH * adsorption/formation and thereby promotes the oxidative removal of CO * intermediates, while the Bi-induced asymmetric oxo-bridge interface triggers interfacial charge redistribution around Pd active centers, which further facilitates CO * desorption/oxidative removal and efficient C─C bond cleavage, thus favoring the C1 reaction pathway. As a result, the optimized PdNi-O-Biene demonstrates exceptional mass activity (8.42 A mg Pd −1 ) and specific activity (28.09 mA cm ECSA −2 ) for EOR in alkaline electrolyte, representing improvements of 5.5 and 3.7 times over commercial Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs), respectively. This work not only provides an effective strategy for the synthesis of high-performance EOR electrocatalysts but also highlights the potential of atomic-scale interface engineering for alcohol oxidation reactions.

Constructing photocatalysts with multidimensional active site architectures represents a powerful strategy for boosting visible-light-driven VOC degradation efficiency. Here, we report a structure regulation strategy achieved through interface coupling of a bimetallic gold-bismuth (Au-Bi) nanodot network with heteromorphic Bi 2 WO 6 composed of mesoporous nanofibers and nanosheets. This yields distinctive Au-Bi nanodot-anchored 1D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts exhibiting optimized charge transfer pathways and amplified surface reactivity. The bimetallic Au-Bi network collaboratively forms multi-scale Schottky junctions, effectively promoting the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs while simultaneously enhancing visible-light absorption via localized surface plasmon resonance effects. Concurrently, the in situ formation of 0D Au-Bi nanodots and heteromorphic 1D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 during reduction sintering induces abundant oxygen vacancies, promoting oxygen activation and reactive oxygen species generation. The multidimensional 0D/1D/2D Au-Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst rapidly and thoroughly degrades acetaldehyde, achieving degradation rates 13.2-fold and 5.92-fold higher than those of 1D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 and 1D/2D Bi-Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. Moreover, this catalyst maintains exceptional stability across five consecutive cycles. This work pioneers an innovative methodology for designing high-performance heterogeneous photocatalysts.

When metallic bismuth (Bi) is adopted directly as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), severe volumetric variation emerges during the repeated alloying/dealloying redox reactions. Such structural evolution ultimately triggers electrode structural pulverization and rapid capacity fading of the batteries. Herein, Bi-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) precursors were fabricated via a facile solvothermal strategy. Porous Bi@C composites with tunable morphologies were further synthesized by regulating solvent volume ratios and thermal treatment temperatures. On the one hand, MOF-derived nanoporous carbon frameworks construct abundant conductive pathways for ion and electron migration, thereby boosting the comprehensive electrochemical properties of the as-prepared composites. On the other hand, the electrochemically active Bi species are spatially confined and stabilized within the carbon matrix. This confinement effect efficiently alleviates the inherent volumetric expansion of Bi, and accordingly improves the long-term cycling stability of electrode materials. Among all samples, the optimized Bi@C-100:30-800 electrode delivers superior electrochemical performance. It retains a high reversible specific capacity of 443.6 mAh g -1 after 500 long-term cycles at a current density of 500 mA g -1 . Notably, a reversible specific capacity of 416.5 mAh g -1 can still be achieved after 1000 cycles at 1 A g -1 , accompanied by a coulombic efficiency of 99.9%. Such remarkable electrochemical merits endow the material with promising application potential in advanced sodium-ion batteries.

The Bi/Bi2O3-type oxygen sensor is extensively employed for oxygen monitoring in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE)-cooled reactors, yet its low-temperature measurement accuracy remains a critical bottleneck limiting engineering deployment. This study aims to extend the lower operating temperature limit of the sensor through synergistic optimization of the reference electrode and solid electrolyte. The effects of the Bi/Bi2O3mass ratio, filling amount, and yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (YPSZ) electrolyte wall thickness on sensor performance were systematically investigated over 300–600 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and finite element simulations (COMSOL Multiphysics®6.3, COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) were used to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The results show that the optimized sensor with a Bi/Bi2O3mass ratio of 95:5, a filling amount of 10 g, and a YPSZ wall thickness of 1.5 mm extended the stable operating limit from 350 °C to 300 °C, achieving a relative electromotive force error of 3.13% at 300 °C and maintaining over 4000 h of drift-free service. The improved low-temperature accuracy is attributed to the reduced oxygen ion migration activation energy (0.48 eV) and lower bulk impedance of the thick-walled YPSZ after high-temperature activation. These findings provide a material optimization strategy and theoretical basis for wide-temperature-range, long-lifetime oxygen sensing in lead-based reactors.

For NiCo 2 O 4 supercapacitor electrode materials, simultaneously improving energy density and long-term cycling performance remains a challenge. This is because the lower conductivity and the lattice distortion induced during cycling restrict the utilization of active sites and cycling stability. In this work, a binder-free Bi-doped NiCo 2 O 4 urchin-like electrode was grown in situ on nickel foam by a hydrothermal method followed by heat treatment, and the regulatory effect of Bi incorporation on the structure and electrochemical behavior of the NiCo 2 O 4 urchin-like electrode was investigated. Appropriate Bi doping can reconstruct the local coordination environment, thereby inducing the formation of oxygen vacancies and increasing the specific surface area and electrochemical performance, thus accelerating ion/electron transport and improving the reversibility of the Faradaic reaction. Results show that the 5% Bi-NiCo 2 O 4 electrode exhibits optimal electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance of 2866.6 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , and the ionic conductivity increases by 34.8% compared to the undoped sample. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor device (Bi-NCO//C800) was assembled using Bi-NiCo 2 O 4 as the positive electrode and polymer-derived porous carbon (C800) as the negative electrode. The device demonstrates an outstanding specific capacitance of 154.7 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , achieves a maximum energy density of 48.4 Wh kg −1 and a maximum power density of 7500 W kg −1 , and maintains 115% capacitance retention over 11,000 cycles, exhibiting excellent cycling stability.
