Although tantalum (Ta) has been studied experimentally for many years as an important anti-corrosion material, it remains a challenge to accurately predict its corrosion anisotropy theoretically. In this work, we proposed an ab initio model considering the solvation effect to investigate crystal orientation-dependent corrosion behavior of Ta. The changes in electron transfer number and energy of a tantalum atom during its dissolution from the surface in vacuum and explicit methanol molecules were studied, respectively. Based on the anodic dissolution activation energy considering solvation effect, the corrosion current densities of (200), (110) and (211) surfaces were calculated to be 3.39 × 10 −8 A/cm 2 , 2.24 × 10 −11 A/cm 2 and 2.95 × 10 −11 A/cm 2 , respectively. The results are consistent with the variation trend of peak intensity in the XRD pattern. More importantly, the corrosion current density we predicted based on the percentage of these crystalline surfaces in the polycrystalline tantalum foil is 10 −7.25 A/cm 2 , which is very close to the experimental value (8.70 × 10 −8 A/cm 2 ). Therefore, this result is capable of providing a theoretical basis for the electrochemical machining of Ta and a new idea for studying the anodic dissolution behavior of other metals or alloys in solution.

Pb-free piezoelectric ceramic materials (K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04 )(Nb 0.92 Ta 0.08− x Sb x )O 3 (KNLNTS) were designed and prepared. The effects of varied Sb/Ta doping on the physical structure, surface morphology, and electrical characteristics of ceramics were also studied. The perovskite structure is present in all of the doped ceramic samples without any secondary phase (when x < 0.05). All of the doped ceramic samples have a Curie temperature ( T C ) above 300°C. At the same time, the orthorhombic–tetragonal phase transition temperature ( T O–T ) is pushed closer to ambient temperature. Doping with Sb/Ta/Li changed the electrical characteristics of the samples and increased their piezoelectric properties. At x = 0.03, the KNLNTS sample has the best piezoelectric properties: d 33 = 215 pC/N, Pr = 26.08 μC/cm 2 , T C = 342.6°C.

Initially considered a “safe” substitute for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has been extensively used in the production of fluoropolymers for several years, leading to its environmental ubiquity and subsequent discovery of its significant bio-accumulative properties and toxicological effects. However, the specific impact of HFPO-TA on females, particularly those who are pregnant, remains unclear. In the present study, pregnant mice were exposed to 0.63 mg/kg/day HFPO-TA from gestational day (GD) 2 to GD 18. We then determined the potential effects of exposure on gut microbiota and fecal metabolites at GD 12 (mid-pregnancy) and GD 18 (late pregnancy). Our results revealed that, in addition to liver damage, HFPO-TA exposure during the specified window altered the structure and function of cecal gut microbiota. Notably, these changes showed the opposite trends at GD 12 and GD 18. Specifically, at GD 12, HFPO-TA exposure primarily resulted in the down-regulation of relative abundances within genera from the Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria phyla, as well as associated Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. With extended exposure time, the down-regulated genera within Proteobacteria became significantly up-regulated, accompanied by corresponding up-regulation of human disease- and inflammation-associated pathways, suggesting that HFPO-TA exposure can induce intestinal inflammation and elevate the risk of infection during late pregnancy. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that disturbances in the gut microbiota were accompanied by abnormal fecal metabolite. Additionally, alterations in hormones related to the steroid hormone biosynthesis pathway at both sacrifice time indicated that HFPO-TA exposure might change the steroid hormone level of pregnant mice, but need further study. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the mechanisms underlying HFPO-TA-induced adverse effects and increases awareness of potential persistent health risks to pregnant females.

In our previous work, we have developed tannic acid (TA)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coating (TA-APTES coating) for membrane surface modification, which has several distinct advantages: suitable for various membranes, hierarchical structures, mild conditions, etc. In this work, we developed (TA-APTES)Plus coating, which exhibits much better performance than our previous TA-APTES coating: (1) Much faster: The membrane modification process based on our (TA-APTES)plus coating only needs 40 min, while our previous TA-APTES coating needs 12 h; (2) Much greener: The (TA-APTES)Plus coating is prepared in pure water system, without Tris-HCl buffer solution , without oxidants such as H 2 O 2 or KIO 4 ; (3) More stable: The (TA-APTES)Plus coating can remain superhydrophilic even after 30 days, which cannot be achieved by our previous TA-APTES coating. Moreover, the (TA-APTES)Plus coating reserves the advantages of our previous TA-APTES coating, such as universality and distinct hierarchical structures. Take polypropylene (PP) microfiltration membrane as an example, the PP membrane modified by (TA-APTES)Plus not only possesses ultra-high pure water flux (11,990 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and high separation efficiency (>99.8%) of oil-in-water emulsion, but also exhibits excellent stability. Considering its much better performance, the (TA-APTES)Plus coating may become a more powerful tool for membrane modification toward oil/water separation.

Tannic acid(TA)-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) coating possesses hierarchical structure and superhydrophilicity, and can be facilely coated on various porous membranes for oil-water separation. However, the TA-APTES coating will lose its superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity after being exposed to the air for more than one month. Besides, TA-APTES coating on membrane surface decomposes when the coating is immersed in acidic solution (pH ≤ 3) or alkaline solution (pH ≥ 12). In this study, the reasons for the instability of TA-APTES coating have been studied, and an effective strategy for significantly improving the stability of the coating has been developed via simple treatment with ferric ions. The coordination effect between ferric ions and the TA-APTES coating can not only restrain the oxidation of the phenolic hydroxyl groups, but also decrease the electrostatic repulsion and enhance the interactions between the chain segments. The resultant (TA-APTES)-Fe(III) coating possesses long-term superhydrophilicity and excellent acid-base resistance property, while the distinct and hierarchical structure of the TA-APTES coating can be reserved. Thanks to the outstanding stability of (TA-APTES)-Fe(III) coating, the PVDF-(TA-APTES)-Fe(III) membrane can maintain its outstanding anti-oil-fouling property and good oil/water separation performance even it is being exposed in air for one month or being immersed in strong acidic or alkaline solutions for 48 h, which is much better than the pristine PVDF-(TA-APTES) membrane. This study will accelerate the practical application of TA-APTES coating.

Conventional nanofiltration membrane fabrication generally includes the usage of toxic organic solvent that poses threats to the environment and public health. Herein, we explored preparing nanofiltration membrane through a non-organic solvent method utilizing the highly reactive natural product, tannic acid (TA), along with cyclohexane-1,4-diamine (CHD). Fabrication process was carried out through sequential immersion of a polyethersulfone (PES) support in two aqueous monomer phases. The absence of a solvent interface facilitated the diffusion and mixing of the two monomers, and the highly reactive quinone derivative of TA enabled the rapid film formation via Michael addition and Schiff base formation. Membrane performance was optimized through investigation of fabrication parameters. The TA-CHD membrane exhibited a negatively charged surface, with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 600 Da. The membrane prepared at optimal conditions showed approximate 97% and 50.7% rejections towards Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl, with a water flux at approximate 35 L m −2 h −1 (10 bar). Fouling behaviour of the TA-CHD membrane was studied and a chemical cleaning test under two extreme pH was performed to demonstrate the chemical stability. The proposed non-organic solvent method here provides an eco-friendly way to utilize the potential of polyphenol natural products in water purification membrane preparation.

TiO2is one of the most attractive semiconductors for use as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, the large-scale application of TiO2photoanodes is restricted due to a short hole diffusion length and low electron mobility, which can be addressed by metal doping and surface decorating. In this paper we report the successful synthesis of hierarchical Ta doped TiO2nanorod arrays, with nanoparticles on the top (Ta:TiO2), on F-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass by a hydrothermal method, and its application as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. It has been found that the incorporation of Ta5+in the TiO2lattice can decrease the diameter of surface TiO2nanoparticles. Ta:TiO2-140, obtained with a moderate Ta concentration, yields a photocurrent of ∼1.36 mA cm−2at 1.23 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under FTO side illumination. The large photocurrent is attributed to the large interface area of the surface TiO2nanoparticles and the good electron conductivity due to Ta doping. Besides, the electron trap-free model illustrates that Ta:TiO2affords higher transport speed and lower electron resistance when under FTO side illumination. Keywords:hierarchical TiO2;Ta doping;charge separation;photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Plant polyphenol-inspired surface modification of membranes is helpful for oil–water separation. However, the preparation of this coating is time-consuming. Herein, we introduce a rapid synthesis of the TA-APTES coating by the addition of sodium periodate (SP). The surface chemical composition and morphology of the resultant TA-APTES hybrid coatings were characterized using SEM, ATR-FTIR, and XPS. The hydrophilicity and membrane performance were investigated by the water contact angle, pure water permeability, and oil rejection for an isooctane-in-water emulsion. The experimental findings revealed that the optimal microfiltration (MF) membrane (MF-TA-APTES-SP-0.05) displayed exceptional hydrophilicity and water permeability (9558 L m–2 h–1 bar–1). The membrane realized highly efficient separation with a permeability (4117 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and rejection of oils (>99%). Furthermore, it possessed outstanding chemical stability and maintained underwater superoleophobicity even after exposure to harsh conditions. This simple and rapid strategy of developing hydrophilic coatings as a modifier for the poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes has potential applications in oil–water separation and wastewater treatment.

In this study, the ultrasonic spray drying technology was applied to prepare composite microspheres of catalyst (Ta−Fe, Ph−Fe) and AP. The surface morphology of the two composite microspheres was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their particle size distribution characteristics were tested by a nano laser particle size analyzer. The results showed that the spray drying technology can uniformly compound the AP and the catalyst into spherical particles. The thermal decomposition process of Ta(Ph)-Fe/AP composite microspheres were tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC data demonstrated that Ta(Ph)-Fe/AP composite microsphere had a very good catalytic effect and significantly promoted the thermal decomposition process of AP. In addition, the catalytic mechanism was discussed by calculating the change in activation energy. Compared with the raw AP, the activation energies of the Ta−Fe/AP and Ph−Fe/AP composite microspheres were reduced by 18.5 kJ/mol and 28.1 kJ/mol, respectively.

Achieving robust underwater adhesion by bioadhesives remains a challenge due to interfacial water. Herein a coacervate-to-hydrogel strategy to enhance interfacial water repulsion and bulk adhesion of bioadhesives is reported. The polyethyleneimine/thioctic acid (PEI/TA) coacervate is deposited onto underwater substrates, which can effectively repel interfacial water and completely spread into substrate surface irregularities due to its liquid and water-immiscible nature. The physical interactions between coacervate and substrate can further enhance interfacial adhesion. Furthermore, driven by the spontaneous hydrophobic aggregation of TA molecules and strong electrostatic interaction between PEI and TA, the coacervate can turn into a hydrogel in situ within minutes without additional stimuli to develop enhanced matrix cohesion and robust bulk adhesion on diverse underwater substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations further reveal atomistic details of the formation and wet adhesion of the PEI/TA coacervate via multimode physical interactions. Lastly, it is demonstrated that the PEI/TA coacervate-derived hydrogel can effectively repel blood and therefore efficiently deliver the carried growth factors at wound sites, thereby enhancing wound healing in an animal model. The advantages of the PEI/TA coacervate-derived hydrogel including body fluid-immiscibility, strong underwater adhesion, adaptability to fit irregular target sites, and excellent biocompatibility make it a promising bioadhesive for diverse biomedical applications.

Weak antilocalization (WAL) effect is commonly observed in low-dimensional systems, three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators and semimetals. Here, we report the growth of high-quality Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 single crystals via the chemical vapor transport (CVT). Clear sign of the WAL effect is observed below 50 K, probably due to the strong spin—orbital coupling in 3D bulk. In addition, it is worth noting that a relatively large MR of 120% appears under 1 T magnetic field at T = 2 K. Hall measurements and two-band model fitting results reveal high carrier mobility (>1000 cm 2 · V −1 ·s− 1 in 2–300 K region), and off-compensation electron/hole ratio of ∼8:1. Due to the angular dependence of the WAL effect and the fermiology of the Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 crystals, interesting magnetic-field-induced changes of the symmetry of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) from two-fold (≤ 0.6 T) to four-fold (0.8–1.5 T) and finally to two-fold (≥ 2 T) are observed. This phenomenon is attributed to the mechanism shift from the low-field WAL dominated MR to WAL and fermiology co-dominated MR and finally to high-field fermiology dominated MR. All these signs indicate that Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 may be a topological semimetal candidate, and these magnetotransport properties may attract more theoretical and experimental exploration of the (Ta,Nb)Sb 2 family.

For electrochemical etching, it is often assumed intuitively that the high specific surface area (SSA) is largely dependent on the aggressiveness of the corrosive agent. Today, however, we present a different perspective. In this study, we combine theoretical calculations and electrochemical experiments to fully understand the mechanisms of Cl - and Br - in the three stages of the tantalum (Ta) pitting process, including passivation film breakdown, Ta anodic dissolution and re-passivation. The results show that both Cl - and Br - cause the breakdown of the passivation film and the dissolution of Ta atoms, with the former having a more pronounced effect. However, MD simulations show that the re-passivation of Ta occurs only in Br - containing media but not in Cl - containing media. This means that Ta is protected by adsorption of dissolved oxygen while being destroyed by Br - , but is only dissolved in NaCl solution. The same result is observed in our electrochemical experiments. In addition, the specific capacity of etched Ta foil in NaBr solution is as high as 325μF/cm 2 while it is only 48μF/cm 2 in NaCl. It is precisely the protective rather than the destructive effect of the etchant that is more important for obtaining high SSA.
