Ultrafast degradations of organic and inorganic pollutants by sole piezocatalysis efficiently triggered with low air pressure on 1T/3R-MoS2

Miao Huang,Wencong Li,Xiangdong Xu

With rapid increases of population and chemical discharge, treatment and recycling of wastewater have become increasing important. Herein, a new approach for ultrafast degradations of both organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater by only piezocatalysis, triggered by low air pressure on MoS 2 , is described. Results reveal that the degradation rates of organic methylene blue and inorganic nitrite reach 99.5 % within 75 s and 91.5 % within 1200 s, with the first-order rate constants of 0.072 s −1 and 0.0016 s −1 , respectively. Both degradation rates are faster than those of other methods previously reported. And coexistence of organic and inorganic pollutants causes further enhancement of the piezocatalysis efficiency. Particularly, the piezocatalysis of commercial MoS 2 can be efficiently activated by this air-pressure approach, which is difficult to realize by previous others. The piezocatalytic degradations of other organic pollutants can be similarly induced. Moreover, higher degradation rates are measured in neutral or weakly alkaline environments, and high degradation efficiencies (> 90 %) can be similarly achieved in various water sources. Theoretical simulations support the experimental findings, both indicating a new, environment-friendly, and low-cost approach for efficiently activating the piezocatalysis of MoS 2 by low air pressure, thus leading to wastewater purification and energy conservation.

Liu Yan-Ru,Lei Ze-Wei,Liu Ren-Ping,Li Xin-Ye,Xiong Pei-Xun,Luo Yong-Jin,Chen Qing-Hua,Wei Ming-Deng,Zeng Ling-Xing,Qian Qing-Rong

At present, there have been some reports on the application of metal phase selenide (1T-MSe 2 ) in the field of energy storage. In this manuscript, a stable Sn-doped metal phase tungsten selenide (1T-WSe 2 -Sn) was elaborately fabricated in situ by a simple calcination technique. N-doping was introduced by employing chitosan as precursor and nanoreactor, the Sn-doping induces 1T phase of WSe 2 and enlarges the layer space to promote the electron/ion transport and structural stability. The optimized 1T-WSe 2 -Sn electrode delivers prominent cycling lifespan (285 mAh·g −1 at 1.0 A·g −1 after 900 cycles) along with decent rate capability when applied as an anode of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The specific capacity was determined to be of 460 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 after 100 cycles. It also displays superior capacity of 183 mAh·g −1 at 0.5 A·g −1 for 200 cycles when paired with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode. Applied as the anode for potassium ion batteries (PIBs), it exhibits a satisfactory specific capacity of 345 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 after 50 cycles. Graphical abstract

Collaborative activation of basal and edge sites in Pt doped 1T phase MoS2 quantum sheets for highly efficient alkaline HER

Cheng Pan,Changlin Dong,Wenshu Chen,Shenhua Qian,Jingxiang Yin,Yongping Du,Leiming Lang,Guoqiang Luo,Jian Zhang

Monolayer Pt doped 1T phase MoS 2 quantum sheets (Pt/1T–QSs) were synthesized. • The Pt/1T–QSs show 70% metallic 1T phase with a lateral size of ca. 6.1 nm. • Pt doping collaboratively activate both basal and edge sites of MoS 2 for HER. • The Pt/1T–QSs exhibit exceptional alkaline HER performance. Transition metal disulfides (TMDs) are considered as promising alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts; however, their catalytic activity remains far from satisfactory. This is primarily due to the relatively low HER activity of both basal and edge sites. Herein, a strategy of synthesizing Pt doped 1T phase MoS 2 quantum sheets (Pt/1T–QS) for co-activating both basal and edge sites is reported for addressing the aforementioned issue. The developed strategy employs a wet-chemical synthetic route encompassing a hydrothermal doping reaction, a subsequent chemical lithiation, and a final liquid exfoliation process to prepare the desired Pt/1T–QSs (monolayered with lateral size of ca. 6.1 nm). Notably, the Pt/1T–QSs demonstrate exceptional alkaline HER performance, presenting a low overpotential of 203 mV at 300 mA cm −2 and excellent durability for over 120 h at 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Theoretical calculations reveal that Pt doping induces pronounced up-shifts for the p −/ d –band centers and collaboratively optimized ΔG H at both basal and edge sites in 1T–QS, thereby accelerating water dissociation kinetics and enhancing alkaline HER performance. This work offers a generalizable strategy for overcoming the conventional edge-dominated activity paradigm of TMD-based catalysts and may advance the rational design of high-performance alkaline HER catalysts with multi-site activation. A rational designed catalyst of Pt doped 1T phase MoS 2 quantum sheet (Pt/1T–QS) material was prepared, characterized by monolayer thickness, quantum sized, dominant 1T phase, and uniformly distributed Pt dopants. The Pt doping collaboratively activates both the basal and edge sites of 1T–QS by accelerating water dissociation kinetics and optimizing hydrogen adsorption energies, resulting in outstanding alkaline HER performance. Synergistic effects of 1T–2H MoS2 and laser-reduced graphene Oxide–ZnO scaffold composite catalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

K.S. Chandrakantha,Z. Zuo,B.N. Chandrashekar,A. Amini,K.S. Rangappa,S. Srikantaswamy,C. Cheng

A composite catalyst, zinc-doped laser-reduced graphene oxide (LrGO), is synthesized with highly dispersed molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanolayers using laser exfoliation followed by a hydrothermal process. The resultant LrGO–ZnO/1T–2H MoS 2 (GZM3) catalyst exhibits enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance and improved stability. It achieves small overpotentials of 94 and 191.5 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. This superior catalytic activity is attributed to the high electrical conductivity and large electrochemical surface area of graphene, along with efficient charge transfer facilitated by Zn ions between LrGO–ZnO and 1T–2H MoS 2 .

Highly defective and conductive Cu-doped 1T/2H-MoS2 nanosheets as high-capacity cathode materials toward enhanced magnesium ion storage

Ao Xu,Yan Liu,Jiahui Wang,Yijing Wang,Fuyi Jiang,Yanli Zhou

Limited by the poor electronic conductivity and strong interaction between Mg2+ and MoS2, the 2H phase of MoS2 as the cathode materials exhibits a low capacity along with poor rate capability. How to adopt the structure engineering to largely boost the Mg2+ diffusion kinetics and enhance the reaction activity are the current tasks that need to be addressed. Herein, the cation doping strategy is adopted to elaborately design the defective Cu-doped metallic MoS2 nanosheets (Cu-MoS2) via a hydrothermal process. The Cu2+ doping widens the layer distance, induces the formation of metallic 1T phase of MoS2, and ameliorates the structural stability. Thus, the Mg2+ ions diffusion kinetics and the electronic conductivity of Cu-MoS2 are largely boosted. Meanwhile, the MgCl+ in the electrolyte can decrease the reaction energy barrier, and therefore fasten the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, the optimized Cu-MoS2 as the cathode materials toward magnesium ion batteries exerts remarkable magnesium storage properties, evidently superior to the pure MoS2. When cycled at 0.1 A g-1 over 100 cycles, the discharge capacity can reach as high as 369.5 mAh g-1. Even cycled at a high rate of 1 A g-1, the Cu-MoS2 maintains a specific capacity of 267.3 mAh g-1 over 200 long cycles. The related kinetics tests confirm its rapid reaction kinetics and pseudocapacitance dominated charge storage process. The ex-situ XPS and HRTEM data largely verify the conversion reaction mechanism of Cu-MoS2 during cycling. This work provides guidelines for the long-term development of MoS2 in the field of magnesium ion batteries.

Chemical activation of hollow carbon nanospheres induced self-assembly of metallic 1T phase MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets for electrochemical lithium storage

Yanguo Liu,Jiayuan Chen,Chang Xu,Tingli Yu,Zhipeng Li,Zhiqiang Wei,Lizhi Qian,Yanfen Wan,Peng Yang,Zhiyuan Wang,Shaohua Luo,Hongyu Sun

Ultrathin nanosheets made by transition metal dichalcogenide show the potential as high-capacity anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the tendency of restacking individual nanosheet due to strong van der Waals force , a dramatic volume variation upon continuous cycling, as well as poor intrinsic conductivity greatly restrict their practical applications. In this work, high content metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1T/2H–MoS 2 ) ultrathin nanosheets with higher intrinsic conductivity and extended interlayer distance are vertically assembled on the outer surface of chemically activated hollow carbon nanospheres (CAHCSs) through a facile solvothermal method . Phase structure, chemical composition , and microstructure studies show that the obtained composites (CAHCSs@1T/2H–MoS 2 ) have optimized structural and compositional advantages to efficiently store lithium ions . When evaluated as anodes for LIBs, the CAHCSs@1T/2H–MoS 2 electrode show excellent fast and stable lithium storage properties. In specific, the CAHCSs@1T/2H–MoS 2 electrode delivers a large reversible capacity of 831 mAh g −1  at 1 A g −1 after 200 cycles. At a higher current density of 2 A g −1 , the CAHCSs@1T/2H–MoS 2 electrode has a reversible capacity of 863 mAh g −1 . The proposed electrode design strategy provides an alternative route to promote the ion storage in transition-metal-dichalcogenides-based materials.

Co4S3 grafted 1 T-phase dominated WS2 ultrathin nanosheet arrays for highly efficient overall water splitting in alkaline media

Qimin Peng,Xue Shao,Chuan Hu,Zuyang Luo,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Zhifeng Dou,Ruobing Hou,Xiulin Yang

Developing the earth-abundant transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting and renewable energy devices has attracted much attention. Herein, we report a 1 T-WS 2 in ultrathin nanosheet arrays grafted with Co 4 S 3 on conductive carbon cloth (CC) (1 T-Co 4 S 3 -WS 2 /CC) through a feasible in-situ growth and vulcanization. The optimized 1 T-Co 4 S 3 -WS 2 /CC catalyst exhibits an impressive electrocatalytic activity and remarkable stability with the oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER: 278/75 mV for 10 mA cm −2 ). It also showed the small Tafel slope values of 61.7 and 58.4 mV dec −1 , respectively. Additionally, the 1 T-Co 4 S 3 -WS 2 /CC (−/+) achieved 1.59 V@10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media superior to the most previously reported non-precious metal electrocatalysts. The outstanding performance could be attributed to the synergy between heterostructures of Co 4 S 3 and 1 T-WS 2 modifying the electronic structure to accelerate water splitting kinetics. Thus, this work presents a rational design of scalable, high-efficiency, stable water splitting electrocatalysts based on WS 2 .

Phase-switchable preparation of solution-processable WS2 mono- or bilayers

Mei Liang,Gao Zhan,Yang Ruijie,Zhang Zhen,Sun Mingzi,Liang Xiongyi,Zhang Yuefeng,Ying Ting,Hu Honglu,Li Dengfeng,Zhang Qinghua,Gu M. Danny,Gu Lin,Zhou Jiang,Huang Bolong,Voiry Damien,Zeng Xiao Cheng,Chai Yang,Li Ju,Yu Xinge,Zeng Zhiyuan

Crystal phase plays a crucial role in determining the properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides. Here we achieve phase-switchable preparation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides using an electrochemical lithium-ion intercalation-based exfoliation strategy by controlling the discharge current density and cutoff voltage. We discover that a small discharge current density (0.005 A g −1 , with a 0.9 V cutoff voltage) produces pure semiconducting 2H phase WS 2 bilayers. In contrast, a large discharge current density (0.02 A g −1 , with a 0.7 V cutoff voltage) leads to the dominant semimetallic 1T′ phase WS 2 monolayers. The phase-switching mechanism was clarified through cryo-electron microscopy, annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. The device (humidity sensor) application of produced 2D WS 2 was then demonstrated, showing phase-dependent humidity-sensing performances confirming the potential of our produced 2D WS 2 with switchable phase in device applications.

Interface Engineering of AuCu Bimetallic Nanoparticles/1T-MoS2 Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Activity in Natural Seawater and Alkaline Freshwater

Xiaorong Gan,Leilei Ye,Weiwei Wu,Kangheng Huang,Ran An,Ting Cheng,Jianlin Zhang,Yanhui Ao

Developing robust, high-performance electrochemical catalysts for hydrogen production from natural seawater or alkaline freshwater presents a significant challenge. Herein, we report an electrocatalyst system of AuCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) supported on 1T-MoS2 (AuCu/1T-MoS2) synthesized via hydrothermal/solvothermal methods followed by controlled electrochemical deposition. Experimental electrochemical measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the AuCu/1T-MoS2 catalyst exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in alkaline freshwater compared with natural seawater. DFT indicates that adsorption of Na+ or Cl– on the active Au sites makes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH) more negative, thereby disfavoring H2 desorption and reducing activity in seawater. Experimentally and theoretically, the introduction of AuCu NPs increases the density of accessible active sites by activating the otherwise inert basal planes of 1T-MoS2. The Cu component facilitates water dissociation and lowers ΔGH, while Au improves the electrical conductivity. The orbital hybridization between the d states of AuCu and those of Mo in 1T-MoS2 results in a higher density of states at the Fermi level, thereby improving conductivity and reducing ΔGH. Charge redistribution at the AuCu/1T-MoS2 interface produces a synergistic enhancement of HER kinetics. Our findings offer design principles for bimetallic/2D hybrid electrocatalysts tailored for seawater and alkaline electrolysis.

Enhancing stable and rapid Li+/Na+ storage performance via interface engineering of confining Co3S₄/1T-MoS₂ heterostructure on nitrogen-doped carbon

Shou-Cong Dong,Rui Zeng,Hao Zhang,Shu-Ting Zhang,Pei-Pei Chen,Dong-Lin Zhao

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) exhibit high theoretical capacity as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their practical application is severely hindered by poor cycling stability. In this study, Co 3 S₄/1T-MoS₂ heterostructure was confined on nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets composite (Co 3 S₄/1T-MoS₂@NC) by high-temperature pyrolysis and hydrothermal sulfidation, using ZIF-67 as the precursor, modulated by a small-molecule carbon source. The heterostructure between Co 3 S₄ and 1T-MoS₂ synergistically enhances the electrical conductivity and rapid diffusion kinetics. The aggregation of MoS 2 nanosheets at the interface effectively enhances the electrochemical performance of the material, while the nitrogen-doped carbon generated at the interface provides additional active sites. This interface engineering and the formation of heterostructures endow the material with improved ion storage capabilities. The composite remains high specific capacities of 1192.2 mAh g⁻¹ for LIBs and 615.3 mAh g -1 for SIBs after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g -1 . The combination of enhanced charge transport and structural stability highlights the potential of the heterostructure strategy for next-generation high-performance alkali metal-ion batteries.

Te doped 1T/2H-MoSe2 nanosheets with rich defects as advanced anode materials for high-rate sodium ion half/full batteries

Zhiqi Li,Jiawen Yan,Qiming Li,Ao Xu,Jianchao Sun,Yijing Wang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xueqin Sun,Fuyi Jiang,Yanli Zhou

MoSe2 with a two-dimensional layer-like structure has been considered a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) on account of its high capacity and rich reserves on Earth. However, the inherent low conductivity of 2H-MoSe2, as well as the inevitable volume fluctuation during cycling, causes structural collapse and capacity decline, resulting in poor rate capability and unacceptable cycling stability. To improve the sodium storage properties of 2H-MoSe2, the Te doping strategy has been adopted to successfully synthesize Te doped 1T/2H-MoSe2 nanosheets (Te-MoSe2) via a facile two-step reaction. The Te doping induces the phase transition of 2H-MoSe2 to form 1T-MoSe2, which can improve the electron conductivity and generate more active sites, benefiting the promotion of sodium storage capacity. Besides, the 1T/2H heterogeneous interface accelerates the charge transfer kinetics. Thus, as an innovative anode material for sodium-ion half batteries, Te-MoSe2 exhibits better sodium storage performances than pure MoSe2. The full batteries composed of the Te-MoSe2 anode and Na3V2(PO4)3@rGO cathode also deliver remarkable electrochemical performances. The related kinetics results confirm the excellent electron transfer efficiency and rapid Na+ diffusion behavior of Te-MoSe2. Moreover, the reaction mechanism has also been elucidated by some ex situ characterization techniques. The good reversibility and excellent sodium storage properties of the Te-MoSe2 electrode indicate its potential application in future energy storage fields.

Phase interface engineering of defect-rich 1T/2H-WX2/RGO (X = S, Se) nanosheets for efficient microwave absorption and supercapacitor applications

Tengfei Wang,Qing Pang,Boyu Liu,Kaimin Fan,Hongyu Wang

Phase interface engineering plays an essential role in the design and development of effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials and energy storage devices. Nevertheless, the development of multifunctional materials that can simultaneously tackle these challenges remains a significant difficulty. In this study, we developed multifunctional defect-rich 1T/2H-WX2/RGO (X = S, Se) nanosheets utilizing a simple solvothermal and freeze-drying technique. The synthesized 1T/2H-WX2/RGO nanosheets exhibited superior EMW absorption and electrochemical characteristics. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reached 7.68 GHz at a thickness of 3.10 mm. This excellent performance can be attributed to various loss mechanisms, including conductive loss, defect-induced dipole polarization loss and interface polarization loss. Moreover, the 1T/2H-WS2/RGO-15 nanosheets attained a high specific capacitance of 390.44 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. In contrast, the 1T/2H-WSe2/RGO-4 nanosheets demonstrated impressive cycling stability of 71.81% after 5000 cycles, which can be attributed to the active sites provided by its rich heterogeneous interface. The energy density of the 1T/2H-WS2/RGO-15 nanosheets was measured to be 4.27 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 400 W kg−1. This research offers valuable insights into the development of multifunctional materials that can serve as EMW absorbers and supercapacitor electrodes.
