A novel AgNPs spongy trap coupled with portable XRF: a field-ready strategy for sensitive mercury analysis in soils

Lin Li,Yan Xu,Guanyu Lan,Zhenzhen Yao,Xiaoqin Chen,Mengyu Liu,Hongwei Shi,Xue Li,Xuefei Mao

Background Rapid and sensitive on-site detection of mercury in soil is crucial for environmental monitoring, however, current methods generally involve lengthy and complex sample digestion procedures thereby hindering true field deployment. While portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF) offers field compatibility, which is often limited by insufficient sensitivity and spectral interference. Consequently, an effective pre-concentration method to enhance sensitivity and accuracy for rapid soil Hg analysis remains a significant challenge. Results A rapid field method for soil mercury analysis was developed by coupling a portable ED-XRF with a novel silver nanoparticle sponge trap. The trap was fabricated by functionalizing a melamine sponge with polyethyleneimine and dopamine, followed by in situ reduction of silver nitrate to form a three-dimensional porous structure capable of efficiently capturing gaseous Hg 0 through amalgamation. A major advantage is the clear separation between the characteristic XRF peaks of Ag and Hg, which minimizes spectral interference and ensures accurate quantification. The method achieved a detection limit of 12 ng/g, excellent linearity ( r > 0.996), and recoveries of 86-111%. Without any digestion, the entire analysis can be completed within 10 min, demonstrating strong potential for fast on-site application. Significance This work introduces a digestion-free, field-deployable strategy that overcomes the sensitivity and interference constraints of portable XRF in Hg detection. By integrating a tailored nanomaterial trap, it establishes a rapid and efficient framework for on-site environmental Hg monitoring.

Corn stalk/AgNPs modified chitin composite hemostatic sponge with high absorbency, rapid shape recovery and promoting wound healing ability

Qimeng Jiang,Bichong Luo,Zhengguo Wu,Bin Gu,Changliang Xu,Xiaoyun Li,Xiaoying Wang

Uncontrolled hemorrhage before hospitalization and infection are two great challenges for the safety of human life. Although chitin (CH) is a kind of effective hemostatic materials, it presents poor softness and antibacterial activity, which hinders its potential application. Herein, for the first time, loose corn stalk (CS) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used to adjust the dense structures and poor antibacterial activities of solo chitin sponge. And then the crosslinked CH/CS/AgNPs sponge was used as antibacterial hemostatic material. The results show that the blood absorbing ratio of CH/CS/AgNPs was 2.4-fold and 2.7-fold higher than those of solo CH and commercial polyvinyl formal sponge (PVF), respectively. In vitro blood clotting index (19%) of CH/CS/AgNPs was also lower than those of solo CH (45%) and PVF (65%). In vivo rat liver injury results further indicate that the sponge had high hemostatic efficiency without causing inflammation. Besides, the cytotoxicity assay and hemolysis (3.18%) exhibited favorable biocompatibility and nontoxicity. Notably, the sponge showed excellent antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus and the wound closure rate treated by CH/CS/AgNPs sponge reached to 76.5% after 11 days. This work proposes new ideas for the study of antibacterial hemostatic materials by introducing agricultural waste into medical hemostatic field.

Developing fisetin-AgNPs incorporated in reinforced chitosan/pullulan composite-film and its application of postharvest storage in litchi fruit

Zhiwen Qi,Pujun Xie,Chen Yang,Xingying Xue,Hongxia Chen,Hao Zhou,Hua Yuan,Guliang Yang,Chengzhang Wang

In this study, Toxicodendron vernicifluum fisetin chelated silver nanoparticles (FT-AgNPs) with outstanding antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were constructed via self-assembly. To surprise, 0.6 wt% FT-AgNPs was compatibly dispersed into the 1:1 chitosan/pullulan (CS/PUL, CP) matrix. The hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between FT-AgNPs and CP, slightly increased the CP thermal stability, and greatly enhanced the tensile strength to 61.2 MPa, water vapor permeability below 20 kg/m 2 •d. Furthermore, after treated with the composite hydrocolloid film (FT-AgNPs/CP), the reactive oxygen species level of the treated Aspergillus niger cells was significantly increased, and the membrane permeability was enhanced. It effectively slowed down the decay of litchi fruit induced by microbial infection under the storage at 25 °C (15 d of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP treatment vs 9 d of the control). In addition, 0.024 μg/kg Ag + residual in lichi pulp verified the qualified safety of the application of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP.

Esterified-sawdust decorated with AgNPs as solid-phase extraction membranes for enrichment and high-sensitivity detection of polychlorinated biphenyls

Jincheng Si,Yu Chen,Tangtang Deng,Shuang Dai,Hui Tan,Funa Meng,Guohai Yang,Yingqiu Gu,Lulu Qu

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants, which cause serious harm to human health and ecological environment. Thus, a low-cost membrane was developed for highly effective removal and rapid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of PCBs by filling esterified-sawdust (CA-SD) modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into solid phase extraction (SPE) column. SD was first modified by an esterification cross-linking strategy and then AgNPs were anchored on the CA-SD to prepare highly sensitive and reproducible SERS substrates (AgNPs/CA-SD). Due to the contraction of the surface area of the CA-SD caused by drying, the gap between the AgNPs could be reduced, thereby generating a large number of hot spots and driving more target molecules into them to obtain the enhanced SERS signals. The AgNPs/CA-SD-based SPE membrane showed excellent SERS activity with an enhancement factor of 5.98 × 10 8 for the R6G analysis. The proposed SERS-active SPE membrane with functionalization of mercapto-β-cyclodextrin was further developed for the determination of PCB-77 and PCB-1 with the LODs of 1.43 × 10 −9  M and 2.12 × 10 −8  M, respectively. In addition, each PCB in the mixed sample could be quickly distinguished based on the characteristic peaks. The current research exhibits great potential for the simultaneous detection of multiple environmental contaminants and can meet the needs of on-site emergency detection.

Long-term monitoring of blood biomarkers related to intrauterine growth restriction using AgNPs SERS tags-based lateral flow assay

Yanan Song,Jingyi Sun,Chunmei Li,Li Lin,Feng Gao,Mingfeng Yang,Baoliang Sun,Ying Wang

Sensitive and accurate early detection of fetal growth restriction (FGR) is of vital importance in the development of the fetus during pregnancy and even the health of future life. Here, an ultrasensitive and straightforward surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based double targets detection in pregnancy is implemented by utilizing functionalized Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). Through fabricating 4-MPA antibody-modified AgNPs on the lateral flow assay (LFA) strips as the SERS nanotags, the target proteins in blood samples from pregnancy were accurately captured, which further quantizing PI3K and CRAF in unprocessed blood. This strategy warrant excellent selectivity and sensitivity with the limits of detection (LODs) are 0.76 fg mL −1 for PI3K and 0.61 fg mL −1 for CRAF, leading reliable quantification for these two targets. Meanwhile, the feasibility of this assembly was testified by comparing with conventional ELISA method, and the results showed that a high degree of consistency was obtained in these two detection assays. This SERS-colorimetric dual-signal LFA strip can provide a novel strategy for early diagnosis of fetal-related disorders, which is essential for disease diagnosis and treatment guidance during pregnancy.

Bimetallic core shelled nanoparticles (Au@AgNPs) for rapid detection of thiram and dicyandiamide contaminants in liquid milk using SERS

Abid Hussain,Da-Wen Sun,Hongbin Pu

Existing methods for contaminants detection in liquid milk are complex, requires chemicals and time-consuming experimental procedure. In this study, SERS based on bimetallic core shelled nanoparticles was employed for simultaneous and fast detection of thiram and dicyandiamide (DCD) in the milk. Spectra ranging from 400 to 1700 cm −1 were selected to examine thiram (0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 ppm) and DCD (20, 40, 80,160 and 320 ppm), by employing 28 nm gold cores and silver-shell thickness of 8 nm. A strong peak at 1379 cm −1 was ascribed to thiram with LOD of 0.21 ppm and R 2 of 0.9896, whereas a band at 929 cm −1 was associated with DCD, delivering LOD of 14.88 ppm and R 2 of 0.9956. The proposed method could achieve results within 34 min and this ecofriendly method can be further employed for simultaneous and rapid screening of other accidental contaminants in milk.

Fabrication and performance evaluation of a Janus solar-driven steam generator using AgNPs@C composite for sustainable water purification

Jing Xu,Ranran Cui,Chen Zhou,Shengyang Yang

Global water scarcity has sparked the need for effective desalination solutions. Conventional methods often come with demanding requirements and high costs. In this study, we explored the potential of AgNPs , precious metal nanoparticles , to enhance photothermal conversion efficiency in solar desalination. Through a two-step process, we incorporated AgNPs into carbon composites derived from organosilicon, boosting evaporation and photothermal rates of the solar absorber. The resulting AgNPs/C composite was then embedded in melamine foam (MF), using PDMS for improved adhesion and hydrophobicity , resulting in the AgNPs/C/MF (SCF) solar absorber. Our characterization revealed a rich pore structure and high absorption rate in the solar spectrum . Remarkably, the SCF achieved an effective water distillation rate of 1.62 kg m −2  h −1 and an impressive photothermal conversion efficiency of 91.3 %. Moreover, the SCF holds promise for seawater desalination , as well as the removal of heavy metals and dyes for decontamination purposes.

Highly Sensitive and Flexible GFF/Au/AgNPs SERS Substrate and Its Application for Rapid Hazardous Residues Detection on Food

Gu Ciyong,Meng Delong,Yu Xiaolei,Li Lin,Zhao Zhimin

In this work, we have developed a highly sensitive surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate consisting of gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on glass fiber filter paper (GFF) by a two-step process of magnetron sputtering and sessile drop method. To test the SERS properties of the substrate, crystal violet (CV) was selected as the Raman probes. The influence of the amounts of NPs on the SERS signals was studied using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and theoretical methods. It is demonstrated that the hybrid structure of optimal GFF/Au/AgNPs has a much stronger SERS enhancement than that of GFF substrate coated only with AuNPs, which can provide a SERS enhancement factor (EF) of 3.52 × 10 8 , and the limit of detection is down to 10 −14  M for CV. Moreover, the Raman signal of the CV on the GFF/Au/Ag substrate presented good homogeneity, reproducibility and stability, also reproduce the SERS spectra after 15 days. Furthermore, the GFF/Au/AgNPs substrate was applied for the rapid on-site testing and identification of malachite green (MG) residual on contaminated fish scale, and the limit of detection was approximately 10 −7  M. Flexible GFF substrate with Au/Ag bimetallic hybrid structure has great potential in rapid sampling of hazardous ingredients on real samples and in SERS applications.

Label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on staphylococcal protein a and AgNPs-rGO-Nf for sensitive detection of virginiamycin M1

Wenjing Qian,Jingming Zhou,Yumei Chen,Hongliang Liu,Peiyang Ding,Yankai Liu,Chao Liang,Xifang Zhu,Ying Zhang,Enping Liu,Aiping Wang,Gaiping Zhang

Virginiamycin (VIR), a feed additive, is used to promote pig and poultry growth. However, it is hazardous to human health. This work described a label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on silver nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs-rGO) nanocomposites and staphylococcal protein A (SPA) for the first time to directly detect the residual marker VIR M1. Good catalytic currents for oxygen reduction reaction were apparently obtained after the modification of nanocomposites on gold electrode. Nanocomposites were characterized using UV–Vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SPA was targeted to immobilize VIR M1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) by binding to Fc region of antibody. The proposed immunosensor showed a wide linear range from 0.25 ng mL −1 to 100 ng mL −1 , providing detection limit (LOD) of 0.18 ng mL −1 of VIR M1. Recovery rates ranged from 92.27% to 98.84%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) was not above 6.6%, indicating the immunosensor could detect VIR M1 in actual samples with high accuracy. The sensor showed good selectivity, reproducibility and stability and could be considered as a potential tool for detection of VIR M1 in feed and animal derived food.

In-situ electrospun aligned and maize-like AgNPs/PVA@Ag nanofibers for surface-enhanced Raman scattering on arbitrary surface

Xiaofei Zhao,Chonghui Li,Zhen Li,Jing Yu,Jie Pan,Haipeng Si,Cheng Yang,Shouzhen Jiang,Chao Zhang,Baoyuan Man

An efficient electrospun aligned surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and maize-like substrate of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite and Ag colloid nanofibers decorated with thermal evaporated Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been developed by taking advantage of electrostatic interactions. The synergistic effects of the evaporated AgNPs (niblets) and the Ag colloid in PVA (corncob) could arouse strong electromagnetic field between the lateral and vertical nanogaps which has been demonstrated by experiment and finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation. In this experiment, the aligned nanofibers possesses an excellent sensitivity by detection of crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) molecule at low concentration. Moreover, the proposed flexible SERS sensor was measured with outstanding uniformity and reproducibility. We also carried out in-situ electrospinning on a curved surface to detect the mixture of Sudan I, CV and MG molecule, which demonstrates that flexible SERS sensor, has enormous potential in accurate and in-situ detection on the complex geometric structure.

A HOF-101@AgNPs-based dual-signal mode aptasensor for electrochemiluminescence and fluorescence detection of E. coli O157:H7

Lanqing Yang,Xiaomin Wang,Xu Jing,Baoqing Bai,Tao Bo,Jinhua Zhang,Ligang Yu,Hailong Qian,Ying Gu,Yukun Yang

Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157:H7 ) emerges as a foodborne pathogen, emphasizing the imperative for creating precise detection tools. An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence/fluorescence (ECL/FL) dual-signal mode aptasensor was constructed for the detection of E. coli O157:H7 . Ultrafine silver nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of hydrogen-bonded organic skeleton materials by in-situ photoreduction method, and then combined with aptamers that can identify specific targets to prepare HOF-101@AgNPs@Apt, greatly simplifying the ECL/FL dual-signal mode probe fabrication process and improving sensing reliability. HOF-101@AgNPs@Apt had both strong ECL luminescence and fluorescence, resulting in a high detection sensitivity. The low limit of detection (LOD) for ECL and FL were 0.48 CFU mL −1 and 2.39 CFU mL −1 , respectively. Moreover, the proposed dual-signal mode aptasensor has been successfully applied to determine E. coli O157:H7 levels in tap water and milk with superior accuracy and high antiinterference capability, providing a promising method for food safety monitoring.

In situ construction of fibrous AgNPs/g-C3N4 aerogel toward light-driven COx-free methanol dehydrogenation at room temperature

Yuanyuan Liu,Shengyang Yang,Su-Na Yin,Ligang Feng,Yang Zang,Huaiguo Xue

Methanol has been deemed to be a favorable medium for the source of hydrogen because its liquid nature facilitates the storage, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen. Currently, steam reforming is the most common method to generate hydrogen from methanol in chemical industry and hydrogen fuel cell field. However, methanol reforming often involves high temperature and pressure, massive capital investment, as well as undesirable byproducts (CO, CO 2 , etc.) formation. To overcome these disadvantages, in this work, we describe an in situ assembly and stepwise thermal treatment method to synthesize fibrous AgNPs/g-C 3 N 4 aerogel, which exhibits efficient photocatalysis activity for the splitting of pure methanol at room temperature. Encouragingly, hydrogen is continuously produced while neither CO nor CO 2 is found in the products, which could be attributed to the moderate redox feature of silver in the AgNPs/g-C 3 N 4 aerogel. More importantly, this CO x -free hydrogen evolution process can prevent the poisoning of catalysts, opening a new opportunity for developing low-carbon chemistry.
