Synergistic pore-acidity engineering in hierarchical H-beta zeolites for molecular sieving of ethylcyclohexane

Xue Ma,Xianjie Wang,Jinhui He,Jingdong Gou,Yaning Zhao,Akang Liu,Shuo Feng,Louwei Cui,Huiyong Chen,Jun Yang,Liuyi Pan,Dong Li

The similarity in physical and chemical properties between ethylcyclohexane (ECH) and dimethylcyclohexane (DCH) isomers poses significant challenges for the effective separation of ECH from coal-derived C8 naphthenic oil. This study employed a model oil system comprising the three predominant components in C8 naphthenic oil: ECH, Cis-1,3-DCH, and Trans-1,3-DCH. The separation performance of H-beta zeolites with varying silica-aluminum ratios (SAR) was evaluated through static adsorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments. The results indicated that H-beta-55 (SAR = 55) demonstrated superior separation efficiency for ECH, attributable to its hierarchical microporous-mesoporous structure and moderate acidity. Specifically, H-beta-55 achieved an ECH/1,3-DCH selectivity coefficient of 3.7, an ECH adsorption capacity of 7.1 mg/g, and a pseudo-second-order adsorption rate constant of 0.67 g/(mg·min), which was 3.4–4.8 times higher than those observed for the 1,3-DCH isomers. In dynamic breakthrough tests, the ECH breakthrough endpoint (∼350 min) occurred approximately 150 min later than that of Cis-1,3-DCH (∼200 min). Ethylcyclohexane temperature-programmed desorption (ECH-TPD) experiments confirmed that physical interactions predominantly governed adsorption. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations of molecular probability density distributions revealed that ECH (kinetic diameter ∼ 6.37 Å) preferentially accesses secondary pore channels to occupy high-density adsorption sites. In contrast, steric hindrance caused by the methyl groups of DCH isomers restricted them to the primary 12-membered ring main channels. These findings underscore the importance of fine-tuning the SAR of H-beta zeolites to optimize pore size distribution and acidity for efficient C8 naphthene separation. This work provides a molecular-level theoretical basis for designing advanced adsorbents for industrial-grade naphthenic oil separation processes.

Heteroatom-Induced Defect Growth for Zeolites Beta with Hierarchical Pores for Heavy Oil Cracking

Chun Zheng,Zhaojun Liu,Chenyang Zhao,Jinwei Wang,Yanlei Sha,Honghai Liu,Hong Meng,Xinye Fan,Gen Li,Hongtao Liu

Hierarchical zeolites Beta have been demonstrated to be advantageous in the catalytic conversion of large molecules due to the elimination of transport limitation. However, obtaining zeolite Beta directly with hierarchical pores in one step is still a great challenge. Herein, we report a simple one-step process to obtain hierarchical zeolite Beta by a defect growth method induced by the grafting of Ca atoms. This strategy is feasible in the formation of unstable Si–O–Ca bonds in comparison with Si–O–Al. Meanwhile, subsequent calcination will lead to breaking of the unstable Ca–O bonds. As a direct result, mesopores will be generated in this totally inorganic synthesis system. This defect-engineering mesopore generation strategy established an avenue for sustainable zeolite design with an eco-friendly procedure.

Preparation and characterization of naringenin/methyl-beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers for drug delivery

Feng Shimiao,Chai Hongliang,Zhang Zhe,Zhang Yu,Li Fengrui,Liu Yanyan,Gao Shuang

Naringenin (NAR), a natural flavonoid, possesses potent antibacterial and antioxidant properties. However, its therapeutic potential is severely limited by poor water solubility. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore efficient drug delivery formulations to improve the physicochemical properties of NAR. In the present work, NAR was successfully encapsulated into methyl- β -cyclodextrin (M β CD) to form inclusion complex, which were further processed into nanofibers (NAR/M β CD-IC-NF) via electrospinning technology. SEM results indicated that the nanofibers were uniform and bead-free, with the NAR/M β CD-IC-NF displaying a remarkably large surface area per unit mass together with a highly developed porous framework. Multiple complementary characterization techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 C NMR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to verify the successful formation of NAR/M β CD inclusion complex within nanofibers. Molecular docking simulation was further performed to illuminate the host–guest interaction and binding conformation between NAR and M β CD at the molecular level. Additionally, there was a marked increase in the water solubility of NAR, with NAR/M β CD-IC-NF capable of complete dissolution in water within 3 s. Free radical scavenging and antibacterial assays confirmed that NAR/M β CD-IC-NF significantly enhanced the biological activity of NAR. In summary, NAR/M β CD-IC-NF served as an effective carrier system to significantly improve the solubility of NAR, thereby expanding its application prospects and bioavailability in biopharmaceuticals. Al-Rich Beta Zeolite Acidity Tuning for Enhanced C4 Alkylation Selectivity via Cobalt Modification

Ming Wen,Yijie Ding,Minglei Yang,Weizhong Zheng,Weizhen Sun,Ling Zhao

Beta zeolite is one of the most promising green catalysts for the isobutane (C4) alkylation with the advantages of eco-friendliness and facile separation. Although Al-rich beta zeolites are found to exhibit a longer catalytic lifetime in C4 alkylation, they suffer from low selectivity owing to the severe cracking reactions induced by their numerous strong Brønsted acid sites (BAS). In this work, cobalt modification has been used to modulate the acidity of Al-rich beta zeolite to improve the selectivity of C4 alkylation. The highly dispersed, tetrahedrally coordinated isolated Co(II) species are confirmed to be located at the zeolite cationic sites. These cobalt species exist as Lewis acid sites, with the formation of Co–H species activating the C–H bonds. Among Co@HB-1 catalysts with various cobalt loadings, the 1.7Co@HB-1 sample exhibits the highest catalytic productivity. Moreover, in the optimization of process conditions, a lower olefin WHSV slows coke accumulation to extend lifetime but intensifies cracking, which in turn reduces RON; a higher I/O ratio accelerates hydride transfer kinetics and thus enhances RON. Under optimal conditions, 1.7Co@HB-1 achieves a RON of 96 at an I/O ratio of 100 and an olefin WHSV of 0.08 h–1. This study provides fundamental insights into tuning the acidity of zeolites for significantly enhanced C4 alkylation selectivity.

Self-Bound Hierarchical Beta Zeolite Catalysts: Engineering Intracrystalline Mesopores for High-Efficiency Tetralin Hydrocracking

Guo Luyao,Yang Ping,He Wenhui,Hong Xuezhuang,Yan Siyang,Xu Yu,Peng Chong,Sun Zhichao,Xiong Guang,Lin Ronghe,Liu Jiaxu

Beta zeolite is widely used for the deep conversion of heavy oils (e.g., hydrocracking) owing to its strong acidity and suitable pore architecture; however, its purely microporous channels impose severe diffusion limitations for bulky molecules, restricting industrial performance. Herein, a predominantly crystalline shaped Beta zeolite catalyst with a tunable hierarchical pore network is developed by coupling TEAOH-induced secondary crystallization with a surfactant-assisted soft-templating strategy. This synergistic approach enables in situ binder-to-zeolite transformation while generating intracrystalline mesopores, yielding shaped bodies with high mechanical strength, tunable acidity, and interconnected micro-mesoporous pathways. A dual-template strategy is further developed, enabling fine-tuning of the mesoporosity. The superiority of pore engineering of shaped zeolite is further demonstrated in tetralin hydrocracking as a model reaction. The optimized 70B Si -0.6T-C catalyst achieves significantly enhanced performance, with a tetralin conversion of 94.9% and a high BTX yield of 28.5% at 380 ° C and a high weight hourly space velocity of 8.0 h –1 , markedly outperforming the untreated counterpart. The improved catalytic behavior is attributed to the synergistic effects of binder-to-zeolite transformation, restoration of Brønsted acidity, and enhanced mass transport enabled by intracrystalline mesopores. This work provides a general and scalable strategy for constructing industrially relevant hierarchical zeolite catalysts, offering improved activity and selectivity for the hydroconversion of bulky molecules.

Acidity tuning of beta zeolite for efficient one-step lactide synthesis from lactic acid

Xueli Cheng,Shuangju Li,Junxiang Jiang,Xuebing Li,Zhong Wang,Hailing Guo,Yuanshuai Liu

Lactide (LD) is a key monomer for producing biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and critically influences the material’s performance and range of applications. Compared with the conventional two-step route from lactic acid (LA) to LD, the one-step liquid-phase process provides milder reaction conditions and greater industrial potential. β zeolites, featuring a unique three-dimensionally interconnected pore structure, have demonstrated considerable promise in catalyzing the conversion of LA to LD. However, the synergistic roles of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites (i.e., BASs and LASs) in enhancing LD yield and selectivity remain insufficiently explored. In this study, steaming treatment was employed to tailor the density, strength and ratio of BASs and LASs in β zeolite catalysts, aiming to elucidate their cooperative effects on LA-to-LD conversions. Characterization results indicated that the steaming treatment has minimal impact on the structural integrity of the zeolite while enabling effective regulation of their acidic properties. Catalytic performance assessments revealed that the optimally treated catalyst, Hβ-300–3h (steamed at 300 °C for 3 h), achieved a high LA conversion of 96% and an LD yield of 90%, with stereoselectivity toward L -LD exceeding 99%. These results surpass those of most previously reported zeolite catalysts. The enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the optimized concentration and strength of BASs and LASs, which facilitate synergistic catalysis across multiple reaction steps and promote the efficient conversion of LA to LD.

Fluoride-free synthesis of plate-like Sn-Beta zeolite via aerosol-assisted hydrothermal route

Xueying Xie,Siyang Yan,Weiming Zhai,Zhenlei Zhang,Liping Liu,Jiaxu Liu,Guang Xiong,Feng Liu

Sn-Beta zeolite is a versatile heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst. Herein, we report a fluoride-free aerosol-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of plate-like Sn-Beta zeolite, which overcomes the environmental problems caused by traditional fluorinated hydrothermal method. The synthesis process, after the optimation by varying seed types, seed loadings, templating agent amounts, and crystallization times, results in the plate-like Sn-Beta zeolite with high relative crystallinity and mesoporous pore volume. Furthermore, the zeolites synthesized using this method exhibit superior catalytic performance in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 2-adamantanone as compared to the sample synthesized by traditional fluoride-assisted hydrothermal method. The physicochemical characteristics of the two samples have been systematically compared. The enhancement of catalytic performance can be ascribed to their greater external surface area, which is more accessible to large molecules.

Dealuminated Beta zeolite-supported robust PtFe bimetallic catalysts for CO preferential oxidation in H2

Jia Shen,Qian Xiang,Yake Lou,Jiajie Ye,Yanglong Guo,Wangcheng Zhan,Li Wang,Xiao-Ming Cao,Aiyong Wang,Xuan Tang,Yun Guo

The preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO-PROX) in rich hydrogen is a highly appealing technology for removing trace amounts of CO in hydrogen purification. Nevertheless, the requirements for realizing both a wide optimal working temperature range and high stability under industrial operating conditions remain a significant challenge. Here, we proposed a strategy for designing robust PtFe bifunctional catalysts stabilized by silanol nests on dealuminated Beta zeolite. The silanol nests formed upon dealumination effectively anchored Fe species, which subsequently facilitated the co-localization of Pt with the Fe sites. As a result, highly dispersed Fe species were stabilized in conjunction with Pt ensembles, achieving 100 % CO conversion within a wide working temperature range of 25 °C to 180 °C. Furthermore, this catalyst also demonstrates exceptional stability, maintaining 100 % CO conversion over 72 h of continuous CO-PROX operation under industrially relevant conditions (80 °C, in the presence of H 2 O and CO 2 ). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the high efficiency of O 2 utilization on the highly dispersed PtFe nanoparticles on dealuminated Beta zeolite not only promotes activity but also enhances stability for the CO-PROX reaction.

Visible Light Activation of Anatase TiO2 Achieved by beta-Carotene Sensitization on Earth’s Surface

Xiao Ge,Hongrui Ding,Tong Liu,Yifei Du,Anhuai Lu

Photocatalytic redox processes significantly contribute to shaping Earth’s surface environment. Semiconductor minerals exhibiting favorable photocatalytic properties are ubiquitous on rock and soil surfaces. However, the sunlight-responsive characteristics and functions of TiO2, an excellent photocatalytic material, within natural systems remain incompletely understood, largely due to its wide bandgap limiting solar radiation absorption. This study analyzed surface coating samples, determining their elemental composition, distribution, and mineralogy. The analysis revealed enrichment of anatase TiO2and β-carotene. Informed by these observations, laboratory simulations were designed to investigate the synergistic effect of β-carotene on the sunlight-responsive behavior of anatase. Results demonstrate that β-carotene-sensitized anatase exhibited a 64.4% to 66.1% increase in photocurrent compared to pure anatase. β-carotene sensitization significantly enhanced anatase’s electrochemical activity, promoting rapid electron transfer. Furthermore, it improved interfacial properties and acted as a photosensitizer, boosting photo-response characteristics. The sensitized anatase displayed a distinct absorption peak within the 425–550 nm range, with visible light absorption increasing by approximately 17.75%. This study elucidates the synergistic mechanism enhancing the sunlight response between anatase and β-carotene in natural systems and its broader environmental implications, providing new insights for research on photocatalytic redox processes within Earth’s critical zone.

Nerolidol/hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers: Active food packaging for effective strawberry preservation

Yu Zhang,Fengrui Li,Honglei Yan,Yan Zhang,Shimiao Feng,Lei Deng,Lixia Zhao,Shuang Gao,Ying Fu,Fei Ye

The development of bio-based active food packaging is urgently needed to address food safety concerns. In this study, nerolidol/hydroxypropyl- β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers (Nerolidol/HP β CD-IC-NF) were prepared by electrospinning to improve the thermal stability and water solubility of natural antimicrobial nerolidol. Structural characterization (FTIR, XRD, 1 H NMR) confirmed successful nerolidol encapsulation within HP β CD cavities. The resulting bead-free nanofibers exhibited high surface area and porosity. Nerolidol/HP β CD-IC-NF demonstrated a 3.3-fold increase in free radical scavenging capacity compared to free nerolidol, along with potent antimicrobial activity (88.1 % and 76.0 % inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively). In strawberry preservation trials, nanofiber membranes reduced B. cinerea lesion diameters by 5.56-fold after 5 days compared to untreated controls, significantly extending shelf life. These findings highlight Nerolidol/HP β CD-IC-NF as a promising solution for preventing microbial contamination and improving food preservation efficacy in active packaging applications.

Glutathione hybrid poly (beta-amino ester)-plasmid nanoparticles for enhancing gene delivery and biosafety

Songwei Tan,Caiyan Yuan,Yuhe Zhu,Shuangyan Chang,Qianru Li,Jiahui Ding,Xueqin Gao,Rui Tian,Zhiqiang Han,Zheng Hu

Introduction CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology has significantly advanced gene therapy, with gene vectors being one of the key factors for its success. Poly (beta-amino ester) (PBAE), a distinguished non-viral cationic gene vector, is known to elevate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, which may cause cytotoxicity and, consequently, impact gene transfection efficacy (T.E.). Objectives To develop a simple but efficient strategy to improve the gene delivery ability and biosafety of PBAE both in vivo and in vitro . Methods We used glutathione (GSH), a clinically utilized drug with capability to modulating intracellular ROS level, to prepare a hybrid system with PBAE-plasmid nanoparticles (NPs). This system was characterized by flow cytometry, RNA-seq, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing in vitro , and its safety and efficacy in vivo was evaluated by imaging, PCR, Sanger sequencing and histology analysis. Results The particle size of GSH-PBAE-plasmid NPs were 168.31 nm with a ζ-potential of 15.21 mV. An enhancement in T.E. and gene editing efficiency, ranging from 10 % to 100 %, was observed compared to GSH-free PBAE-plasmid NPs in various cell lines. In vitro results proved that GSH-PBAE-plasmid NPs reduced intracellular ROS levels by 25 %–40 %, decreased the total number of upregulated/downregulated genes from 4,952 to 789, and significantly avoided the disturbance in gene expression related to cellular oxidative stress-response and cell growth regulation signaling pathway compared to PBAE-plasmid NPs. They also demonstrated lower impact on the cell cycle, slighter hemolysis, and higher cell viability after gene transfection. Furthermore, GSH hybrid PBAE-plasmid NPs exhibited superior safety and improved tumor suppression ability in an Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-infected murine tumor model, via targeting cleavage the EBV related oncogene by delivering CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system and down-regulating the expression levels. This simple but effective strategy is expected to promote clinical applications of non-viral vector gene delivery.

Natural Sweetener, Glycyrrhetinic Acid 3-O-Mono-beta-d-glucuronide, for Postprandial Hyperglycemia Management

Lichun Guo,Mengqing Zhang,Ying Fei,Wei Zhao

This study examines the inhibitory effects of a range of sweeteners on α-glucosidase. Our findings revealed that only one natural sweetener, namely, glycyrrhetinic acid 3-O-mono-beta-d-glucuronide (GAMG), derived from licorice, exhibited a mixed-type inhibition against α-glucosidase with a IC50 value of 0.73 ± 0.05 mg/mL. The fluorescence intensity of α-glucosidase was quenched by GAMG in the formation of an α-glucosidase–GAMG complex. GAMG has been shown to induce conformational changes in α-glucosidase, likely through hydrogen bonding, van der Waals force, and alkyl–alkyl interactions with amino acid residues, including Arg 281, Leu 283, Trp 376, Asp 404, Asp 443, Trp 481, Asp 518, Phe 525, Ala 555, and Asp 616. Additional animal validation experiments demonstrated that GAMG slowed starch digestion, thereby attenuating the postprandial glycemic response. Taken together, these findings provide evidence that GAMG is a natural sweetener with potent inhibitory activity that selectively targets α-glucosidase. This study supports the use of GAMG as a natural sweetener, which holds a high biological value and may be beneficial for managing postprandial hyperglycemia.
