The piezoelectric Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets with in-plane spontaneous polarization were synthesized by hydrothermal method . The adsorption and piezocatalytic properties of the synthesized Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets were investigated upon different variants including synthesis conditions, model dye species, and pH of the dye solution. The materials exhibited positive surface charge and selective adsorption ability for the anionic dye methyl orange (MO) in acidic and neutral conditions. The ultrafast removal of MO ( k obs = 0.718 ppm s −1 ) under ultrasonic vibration was mainly controlled by monolayer adsorption, which followed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm . To eliminate the interference of adsorption, the cationic Rhodamine B (RhB) was adopted as the target pollutant for piezocatalytic experiments. The maximum rate constant of RhB removal (3.9 × 10 −2 min −1 ) was obtained in Bi 2 WO 6 sample with the largest specific surface area of 32.8 cm 2 g −1 . The catalytic nature of the dye degradation phenomenon was confirmed by detection of free radicals and the quenching effect of radical scavengers. The present work demonstrates the potential of Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets in piezocatalytic applications. Moreover, the synergistic effect of adsorption and piezocatalysis is valuable for in-situ regeneration of the piezoelectric adsorbents.

Direct Z-scheme MgIn2S4/Bi2WO6 hierarchical heterostructures were simply fabricated via immobilising MgIn2S4 nanoflakes onto the surface of Bi2WO6 hierarchical nanosheet-like structures towards photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). The analyses of the energy band structure, UPS tests and DMPO-ESR spin-trap experiments confirm that the intimate MgIn2S4/Bi2WO6 heterointerface allows an efficient Z-scheme interfacial charge migration route between MgIn2S4 and Bi2WO6, leading to higher redox ability of photoexcited carriers, and thus favours the separation of photoexcited carriers, proved by the results of PL spectroscopy, photoluminescence decay traces, transient photocurrent densities and EIS. In addition, the MgIn2S4/Bi2WO6 heterostructures also exhibit obviously enhanced ultraviolet-visible-light absorption according to UV-vis DRS analysis, and can generate more electron–hole pairs under UV-visible light illumination, effectively improving the photocatalytic activity. Therefore, because of their synergistic effects, all the MgIn2S4/Bi2WO6 hierarchical heterostructures show distinctly improved photoreduction activities for Cr(VI), compared with pure Bi2WO6. The optimal hybrid (MIS/BWO-0.35) displays nearly 100% Cr(VI) reduction into Cr(III) after 40 min of simulated sunlight illumination, which is better than the majority of the reported Bi2WO6 and other semiconductor photocatalysts before. Its reaction rate constant for the photoreduction of Cr(VI) (0.1063 min−1) is about 4.5 times higher than that of the pristine Bi2WO6 (0.0237 min−1). This work provides a valid approach for developing efficient Z-scheme photocatalytic materials in removing Cr(VI).

In this work, a set of novel Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 (CZTS/BWO) two-dimensional (2D)/two-dimensional (2D) type-II heterojunctions with different CZTS weight ratios (1%, 2%, and 5%) were successfully synthesized via a brief secondary solvothermal process. The successful formation of the heterojunctions was affirmed by characterization methods such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity results showed that the prepared CZTS/BWO heterojunctions had excellent photocatalytic behaviors for organic degradation, especially when the mass fraction of CZTS with respect to BWO in the composite was 2%. Moreover, the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) could further improve the dye and antibiotic degradation efficiencies. The reinforced photocatalytic and photo-Fenton degradation performance were primarily attributable to the introduction of BWO, which afforded increased active sites, expanded the solar spectral response range, and accelerated the cycle of Cu(II)/Cu(I); after four cycling times, its catalytic activity did not decrease significantly. In addition, reasonable hypotheses of the photocatalytic and photo-Fenton catalytic mechanisms were formulated. This study is expected to provide a visual approach for designing a novel photo-Fenton catalyst to jointly utilize the photocatalytic and Fenton activities, which can be better applied to the purification of residual organics in wastewater.

Ultrathin semiconductor nanosheets decorated with metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are promising in photocatalysis due to the multi-component interactions. The materials with a series of monometallic Pd and bimetallic Au-Pd NPs anchored on Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets were synthesized and developed as photocatalysts for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehyde. By optimizing the metallic contents, a typical sample of Au(0.25)Pd(0.25)-Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity among all the prepared photocatalysts including Au(0.5)-Bi 2 WO 6 , Pd( x )-Bi 2 WO 6 , Au( x )Pd( x )-Bi 2 WO 6 ( x represents the weight percentage of metal in the photocatalyst), along with the improved selectivity for producing benzaldehyde. The extended absorption in visible range, higher efficiency for the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and the superior ability for generating active radicals of Au(0.25)Pd(0.25)-Bi 2 WO 6 were demonstrated by DRS spectra, photoelectrochemical measurements, and ESR detection. The effect of the active species for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols was proved to follow the order of h + + O 2 − > h + >> O 2 − . Accordingly, a possible mechanism based on the interfacial cooperation between bimetallic Au-Pd NPs and Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets was proposed to illustrate the photocatalytic process, where the holes accumulated in Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets and O 2 − produced on metallic NPs synergistically promote the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols.

An iodine intercalated Bi 2 WO 6 was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method (160 °C, 2 h) and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The I 0.30 -Bi 2 WO 6 with an I/W molar ratio of 0.30 was highly effective for the degradation and mineralization of 2-chlorophenol, rhodamine B, bisphenol A, phenol, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole in water under visible light. Furthermore, the visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 was enhanced 3.1 times by the introduction of I − . The characterized results indicated that I − mainly inserted into the interlayer of Bi 2 WO 6 , expanding the layer spacing, favoring the efficient charge separation and transfer and prohibiting the recombination of the photogenerated electrons and holes. Specially, the XPS analysis indicated the I − ions substitued the absorbed oxygen to chemically bond in the layered Bi 2 WO 6 , resulting in the change of the electric charge distribution of Bi 2 WO 6 . Moreover, the BET surface area was increased from 25.2 m 2 g −1 for Bi 2 WO 6 to 66.7 m 2 g −1 for I 0.30 -Bi 2 WO 6 for more surface active sites. In addition, the band gap was narrowed for expanded optical absorption in the visible light region. ESR and radicals trapping experiments verified holes were the main active species for the degradation of organic pollutants. Simultaneously, the more positive potential of valence band in iodine intercalated Bi 2 WO 6 could enhance the oxidative power of the photogenerated holes, resulting in the efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants in water.

A novel three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous multiwalled carbon nanotubes-Bi 2 WO 6 (MWNTs–Bi 2 WO 6 ) microsphere photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic performance was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and used to catalytically degrade tetracycline (TC) in water. Compared with pure Bi 2 WO 6 , the photocatalytic activity of the MWNTs–Bi 2 WO 6 composites was enhanced significantly. The incorporated MWNTs facilitated the photogenerated electron transfer and enhanced the separation of photogenerated hole and electron pairs. In addition, the composite displayed stronger light absorption in the visible light region. Furthermore, the large surface as well as π – π electron coupling with the contaminants of MWNTs promoted the adsorption of TC on the photocatalyst surface. As a result, the incorporation of MWNTs with Bi 2 WO 6 enhanced photocatalytic activity. The best photocatalytic performance was achieved with MWNTs proportion of 3%. Almost 100% of TC (20 mg/L) was removed by the solids of 3% MWNTs–Bi 2 WO 6 (0.5 g/L) after irradiation with simulated solar light for 60 min and the degradation efficiency increased about 35% compared with the bare Bi 2 WO 6 . The degradation of the adsorbed TC on the catalyst was also investigated. The FT-IR and DTG analyses demonstrated that the adsorbed TC was slightly degraded in 1 h irradiation although the free TC in solution was completely degraded. As the irradiation extended for 3 h, the adsorbed TC was also degraded. The results indicated that the prepared MWNTs–Bi 2 WO 6 composite has great potential for treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Photocatalytic degradation is an alternative method to remove pharmaceutical compounds in water, however it is hard to achieve efficient rate because of the poor solubility of pharmaceutical compounds in water. This study investigated the photodegradation of norfloxacin in a nonionic surfactant Triton-X100 (TX100)/Bi 2 WO 6 dispersion under visible light irradiation (400–750 nm). It was found that the degradation of poorly soluble NOF can be strongly enhanced with the addition of TX100. TX100 was adsorbed strongly on Bi 2 WO 6 surface and accelerated NOF photodegradation at the critical micelle concentration (CMC = 0.25 mM). Higher TX100 concentration (>0.25 mM) lowered the degradation rate. In the presence of TX100, the degradation rate reached the maximum value when the pH value was 8.06. FTIR analyses demonstrated that the adsorbed NOF on the catalyst was completely degraded after 2 h irradiation. According to the intermediates identified by HPLC/MS/MS, three possible degradation pathways were proposed to include addition of hydroxyl radical to quinolone ring, elimination of piperazynilic ring in fluoroquinolone molecules, and replacement of F atoms on the aromatic ring by hydroxyl radicals.

We developed a facile in-situ growth method to construct amorphous-based Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructures at room temperature. As demonstrated by HRTEM , XPS and EDX-mapping, amorphous state Bi 2 S 3 dispersed uniformly on the surface of crystalline Bi 2 WO 6 hollow spheres. The photocatalytic activities of prepared Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructures were evaluated by the photodegradation of RhB and TC under visible light irradiation, indicating that the introduction of appropriate amorphous Bi 2 S 3 significantly improved the photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 . The amorphous/crystalline contact in Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructures played a crucial role in the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency. Based on DRS, photoluminescence spectra, photocurrent intensity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and OCVD measurements, it was proposed that the enhanced performance could be ascribed to increased visible light utilization, promoted separation efficiency and prolonged life time of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by the introduction of amorphous Bi 2 S 3 . This work may provide new insights into the construction of amorphous-based composited heterostructures for improving photocatalytic activity.

A novel Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 heterojunction catalyst was successfully synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal process. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the corresponding XEDS energy mapping, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra (UV-vis DRS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization performances of the prepared samples were studied with DBT as the model sulfur compound under visible light irradiation. Results indicated that the Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 exhibited considerably higher activity than pure Nb2O5 and Bi2WO6 and the desulfurization rate achieved 99% after visible light irradiation for 120 min. The catalyst also possessed good stability so that the desulfurization rate remained about 90% after seven cycle times and then the crystal structure of the catalyst has barely changed. Such enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs on Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 heterojunction. Moreover, the synergistic effects of this photocatalytic oxidation and the extraction with the methanol as the solvent played an indispensable role in the desulfurization.

CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microsphere with excellent and stable photocatalytic activity for degradation tetracyclines was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal route. The photocatalytic experiments indicated that CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microspheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure Bi 2 WO 6 in both the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. The 1CeO 2 /2Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for degradation of TCH, reaching 91% after 60 min reaction. The results suggested that the particular morphological conformation of the microspheres resulted in smaller size and more uniform morphology so as to increase the specific surface area. Meanwhile, the heterojunction was formed by coupling CeO 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 in the as-prepared microspheres, so that the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes was dramatically improved and the lifetimes of charge carriers were prolonged. Hence, introduction of CeO 2 could significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microspheres and facilitate the degradation of TCH. This work provided not only a principle method to synthesize CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 with the excellent photocatalytic performance for actual produce, but also a excellent property of the photocatalyst for potential application in photocatalytic treatment of tetracyclines wastewater from pharmaceutical factory.

Carbon quantum dot sensitized Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO electrodes (simplified as CQDs-Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO) were successfully prepared by loading platinum particles onto Bi2WO6 nanoplates via a photo-deposition method and sensitized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) via a dip-coating method. The photoelectro-catalytic properties of the Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO and CQDs-Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO electrodes for methanol oxidation were investigated. The results indicated that the CQDs-Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO electrode shows higher photoelectro-catalytic activity and better stability than that of the Pt@Bi2WO6/FTO electrode. The higher photoelectro-catalytic performance for methanol oxidation was attributed due to the special synergetic effects between the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic process under solar light irradiation. More importantly, the introduction of CQDs broaden the photoresponse range of the Bi2WO6 material and improves the mobility of the photocarriers. Meanwhile, the doped CQDs act as preferential adsorption sites for the intermediate carbonaceous species during methanol oxidation. This not only alleviates CO poisoning towards the Pt particles, but also improves the efficiency of methanol oxidation by constructing a new type of CQDs-Pt electrocatalyst. The composite material, which combines the dual function of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis will be a promising candidate for new photoelectro-catalytic fuel cells.

The use of tetracycline antibiotics in industry, healthcare, animal husbandry, agriculture, and aquaculture has resulted in excessive concentrations in a variety of aquatic environments. In this work, PAN/Bi 2 WO 6 /Cu 2 O nanofibrous membranes (PBC ENMs) with photocatalytic degradation performance were successfully prepared using electrostatic spinning technique, and the morphology of catalysts and PBC ENMs were characterised by SEM, BET and UV–Vis. The results demonstrated that the prepared nanofibrous membranes could achieve 97.05 % photocatalytic degradation of TC under visible light, and the degradation efficiencies of its derivatives, chlortetracycline (CTC) and oxytetracycline (OTC), reached 90.87 % and 85.12 %, respectively. Free radical trapping experiments and mechanistic analyses showed that·O 2– is the main active factor in the degradation process. The highest degradation rate of 97.05 % was achieved at initial pH = 7.2.PBC ENMs adsorbed above 87.5 % after six cycles of the experiment. The highest degradation rate of 97.05 % was achieved at initial pH = 7.2 PBC ENMs adsorbed above 87.5 % after six cycles of the experiment. Based on the above advantages, the preparation process of PBC ENMs is simple, low-cost and has good catalytic effect, which provides a simple and efficient treatment means for the treatment of TC wastewater and has a broad application prospect.
