The overuse of norfloxacin (NOR) has attracted wide attention because of the persistence and bio-accumulate in ecosystems and the negative impacts on human health. To solve the environmental issue, BiOI/TiO 2 p-n heterojunctions have been developed and decorated with a porous ZIF-8 to obtain novel hollow BiOI/TiO 2 /ZIF-8 heterojunctions, which were further characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM , XPS , BET, UV–vis DRS, photoluminescence , ESR , photocurrent and EIS analyses. The BiOI/TiO 2 /ZIF-8 heterojunctions exhibited evidently improved photocatalytic performance compared with pristine BiOI , TiO 2 and BiOI/TiO 2 composites under visible light irradiation. ZIF-8 plays a key role in both the enhancement of adsorption and the photocatalytic activity in NOR removal. ·O 2 - and ·OH radicals were the two dominating active species in the photocatalytic process according to the trapping experiments. In 2-BTZ system, large specific surface area, highly effective charge carrier migration with inhibiting recombination, more negative CB and positive VB to generate more active ·O 2 - and ·OH species resulted in superior photocatalytic activity. This work provides a new idea to design a kind of photocatalytic heterostructure with more active species for potential application in the field of environmental treatment.

Addressing arsenite pollution in groundwater has drawn great attention. It is attractive to pre-oxidize highly mobile As(III) to relatively low-toxic As(V) with a subsequent adsorption separation process. Herein, BiOI anchoring on γ-Fe 2 O 3 is performed to synthesize BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 core–shell nanoparticles for efficient removal of As(III) via a simultaneous photocatalytic oxidization–adsorption process. The physical and chemical structures of BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 are investigated by transmission electron microscopy , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and X-ray diffraction measurements. The photoluminescence and electron spin resonance (ESR) characterization were employed to ascertain the possible reaction mechanism of visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidation of As(III). Such BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 delivers a superior As(III) removal capability under visible light irradiation with an arsenic removal efficiency of 99.8% within 180 min, higher than those of BiOCl/γ-Fe 2 O 3 (81.7%) and BiOBr/γ-Fe 2 O 3 (98.9%). The optimal BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 (molar ratio of 2:1) is obtained by rationally adjusting the molar ratio of BiOI to γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The as-synthesized BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 performs well in a wide pH range of 2–8. Only coexisting PO 4 3− anions have a significant effect on the As(III) removal. The free radical trapping experiment and ESR results demonstrate that the ⋅O 2 − and h + are the main active substances for the photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) on BiOI/γ-Fe 2 O 3 . This work not only gives a novel magnetic core–shell nanoparticle photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption of As(III) but also offers a new strategy to rationally design BiOX for its related practical applications.

Porous-hydrangea x%BiOBr/BiOI n-n heterojunction with ordered morphology was successfully prepared through a simple solvothermal process using Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O, KBr, BiOI, and ethylene glycol as the precursors. The prepared x%BiOBr/BiOI (x = 2, 5, 10, 15 mol ratio) n-n heterojunctions exhibit enhanced photodegradation properties during treatment of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) under visible light irradiation. The highest efficiency at optimized x = 5 is 1.3-, 1.7- and 1.3-fold higher than that of the pristine BiOI, BiOBr, and commercial titanium dioxide (P25), respectively. The improved photocatalytic performance was assigned to the optimized charge-separation properties of n-n heterojunction. However, over-loading of BiOBr upon BiOI may restrain the access of light to BiOI, which could limit the light absorption. The active species have been investigated by trapping experiments and it was found that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (∙O 2 - ) were mainly responsible for the photodegradation of TC-HCl. Additionally, the structure and activity relationship were systemically investigated, and the formation of n-n heterojunction is discussed accordingly. The photodegradation of TC-HCl is proved to be a complete mineralization process and the reaction mechanism is also proposed.

The electrostatic induced self-assembly method is successfully applied to prepare core-shell hierarchical structure of BiOI/OMCMB (Oxidized mesocarbon microbead) composites (MB), in which BiOI nanosheets were uniformly immobilized on the surface of OMCMB. The low-priced graphite carbon OMCMB played a crucial role in inducing and assembling the core-shell structure of the MB composites, which not only effectively improved the conductivity of the catalyst but also enhanced the stability of BiOI in the catalytic process. The photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) revealed that the hierarchical structure of OMCMB and BiOI promoted the photogenerated charge separation, and enhanced the photocatalytic performance of BiOI. And sample MB-3 had the highest photocatalytic performance with TH degradation of 96.8% under the visible-light irradiation for 60 min. MB-3 remains favorable photocatalytic activity after four cycles. Moreover, based on the related optical and electrical characterization analysis, a possible photocatalytic mechanism about MB composites was proposed tentatively.

Novel n-SrTiO 3 /p-BiOI heterojunction composites were successfully fabricated by loading SrTiO 3 particles onto the surface of BiOI nanoflakes via a two-step method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-disperse X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and electrochemical measurements. The results show that the n-SrTiO 3 /p-BiOI heterojunction composites are composed of perovskite structure SrTiO 3 and tetragonal phase BiOI. The composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of crystal violet (CV) solution under simulated solar light irradiation, which is superior to that of pristine BiOI and SrTiO 3 . The 30 wt.%SrTiO 3 /BiOI composite is found to be the optimal composite, over which the dye degradation reaches 92.5% for 30 min of photocatalysis. The photocatalytic activity of the 30 wt.%SrTiO 3 /BiOI composite is found to be 3.94 times and 28.2 times higher than that of bare BiOI and SrTiO 3 , respectively. The reactive species trapping experiments suggest that • O 2 − and holes are the main active species responsible for the CV degradation. In addition, the electrochemical measurements elucidate the effective separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. Moreover, on the basis of experimental and theoretical results, a possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the SrTiO 3 /BiOI heterojunction composites is also proposed.

An efficient and facile method to fabricate a surficial dispersive heterojunction based on the assembly of g-C3N4 nanoparticles was proposed. A p–n nano heterojunction composed of BiOI and g-C3N4 was constructed by simply loading g-C3N4 nanoparticles on flower-like BiOI nanosheets. The structure-dependent optical, electronic and photoelectric properties were investigated, and the structure–property relationship was discussed. The results show that the g-C3N4 nanoparticles are uniformly loaded on the surface of BiOI nanosheets and thus form a p–n heterojunction with an intimate interface. The as-prepared samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic degradation ability towards MO under visible-light irradiation. With the unique structure and morphology, enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activities are achieved owing to the synergistic effect of light harvesting, high transfer efficiency and enhanced separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers.

In this work, a new plasmonic photocatalyst Ag/AgI/BiOI-rectorite was prepared via a cation exchange process. The photocatalyst had been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, nitrogen sorption (BET), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic activity, which was evaluated by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation, was enhanced significantly by loading Ag/AgI/BiOI nanoparticles onto rectorite . The photogenerated holes and superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) were both formed as active species for the photocatalytic reactions under visible light irradiation. The existence of metallic Ag particles, which possess the surface plasmon resonance effect, acted as an indispensable role in the photocatalytic reaction.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting offers an ideal strategy for the development of clean and renewable energy. However, its practical implementation is often inhibited by the high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers and the instability of photoanodes. Introducing defect engineering (such as oxygen vacancies) and constructing internal electric field-modulated Z-scheme heteronanostructures (HNs) can be considered as effective approaches to overcome these obstacles. Herein, a flexible method is developed for synthesizing Z-scheme BiOI-CdS HNs with oxygen vacancies, which induce an internal electric field between ultrathin BiOI nanosheets and a CdS semiconductor. This Z-scheme mechanism significantly promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thereby enhancing the PEC performance. The BiOI-CdS photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.22 mA cm–2 at 1.6 V vs RHE under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm–2), outperforming bare BiOI and CdS. Moreover, the photoanode exhibits exceptional stability with only a slight decrease of approximately in its initial photocurrent after a rigorous 4 h test, surpassing other counterparts in terms of durability. This work affords a better understanding of oxygen vacancies and the construction of highly efficient and stable Z-scheme photoanodes for feasible PEC application.

Ternary-component BiOBr/Bi/BiOI composites were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method under the reducing effect of ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid not only converts Bi 3+ to Bi 0 as a reducing agent, but also inhibits the growth of grains and controls the morphology, resulting in a multilayered hierarchical floral structure of the BiOBr/Bi/BiOI composites formed by the assembly of nanosheets dotted with nanoparticles on the surface. The composite has highest photocurrent density, lowest photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate and high specific surface area, and exhibits excellent degradation performance for both single and mixed pollutant systems of tetracycline, rhodamine B and methylene blue. h + is the most dominant reactive oxygen species in the photodegradation process, while ·OH and ·O 2 − provide weak auxiliary degradation. A Z-scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism of BiOBr/Bi/BiOI with excellent photocatalytic performance was proposed.

An ultra-sensitive photoelectrochemical sensing platform for profenofos detection based on the inhibition of catalase activity was prepared in this work. First, the novel functional nanocomposite material AgVO3/BiOI was prepared by a hot solvent method and successive ion layer adsorption reaction. Then, chitosan was employed as a dispersion medium to disperse and immobilize the catalase. Under visible light irradiation, the prepared CAT/CS/AgVO3/BiOI/ITO nanocomposite electrode generates a stable low photocurrent in hydrogen peroxide solution. When this electrode is immersed in a phosphate buffer solution containing profenofos, the activity of the catalase is inhibited, resulting in an increase in the photocurrent. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the profenofos concentration and increase in photocurrent are linearly related in the concentration range of 1 × 10−10 to 5.0 × 10−8 mol L−1, and the limit of detection is 1.0 × 10−11 mol L−1. This biosensor shows good selectivity for detecting profenofos in fruits and vegetables, and the determination results of profenofos are satisfactory.

Precise control of desirable facets and vacancies is expected to be a promising strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of catalysts. Herein, BiOI-1 and BiOI-2 were designed and prepared with (102) and (110) as the dominant exposed facets, respectively. Moreover, BiOI-1 and BiOI-2 correspond to the major types VBiIBi and VBiOBiBi, respectively. The experimental results showed that the degradation and mineralization of bisphenol A (BPA) by BiOI-2 could reach 100% and 95.90% under visible light irradiation. The excellent catalytic performance of BiOI-2 is attributed to the optimization of the energy band structure by its special facets and vacancies, and the narrow band gap promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Meanwhile, the strong reducing property of the conduction band (CB) and the strong adsorption capacity for water and oxygen contribute to the fact that BiOI-2 can generate a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work provides an atomic-scale understanding of the synergistic effects of vacancies and facets on catalysts and offers new directions in the management of water environmental pollution.

Highly exposed active facets and surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) are beneficial for the photocatalytic removal of various harmful organic compounds. In this study, uniform Zn2+-doped BiOI microspheres, assembled by ultrathin nanosheets with highly exposed {001} facets, with OVs were successfully synthesized for NO removal under visible light irradiation. The phase structure and chemical states are analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that replacing Bi3+ with Zn2+ can lead to the increased exposure of the {001} facets. X-ray photoelectron and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy results confirm that low-state Zn2+ increases the number of OVs, indicating that an increased number of OVs and a reduced thickness of the nanosheets can enhance the photocatalytic activity for the removal of NO. The photo-oxidative removal efficiency of NO over 3%Zn-BiOI reaches 53.6% and remains highly stable (52.9%) for up to 210 min under visible light irradiation. The calculation of interface adsorption confirms that OVs and Zn2+ can not only offer a donor energy level to extend the solar response range but also act as adsorption sites for low concentration of NO and O2 to optimize the transmission capacity of surface charge carriers. Moreover, this work systematically explains the function of OVs and Zn2+ in the adsorption process of NO. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy supports understanding of the photo-oxidative removal mechanisms of NO over Zn-BiOI: (i) the byproducts were bidentate nitrites (bi-NO2–), chelate nitrites (ch-NO2–), and bridging nitrites (br-NO3–) in the dark condition and (ii) the final products were bridging nitrites and bidentate nitrites (bi-NO3–) under visible light irradiation. OVs are found to play an important role both in the dark adsorption and photo-oxidative removal of NO by the 3%Zn-BiOI sample.
