As a clean energy carrier, hydrogen necessitates efficient production via cost-effective, highly active non-noble metal electrocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a Zn-doped CoP heterostructure catalyst anchored on MXene-engineered nickel foam (MXene@ZnCoP/NF) through synergistic substrate engineering and compositional modulation. This design achieves exceptional alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and superior overall water splitting efficiency. In 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, the MXene@ZnCoP/NF heterostructure exhibits exceptional HER performance, achieving a low overpotential of 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , 64 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , 214 mV at 500 mA cm −2 , and a Tafel slope of 86.0 mV dec −1 , indicative of rapid reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates industrial-grade durability, maintaining stable operation for 65 h at 500 mA cm −2 without significant degradation. When integrated into a full-cell electrolyzer with RuO 2 /NF as the anode (RuO 2 /NF ||MXene@ZnCoP/NF), the system requires only 1.53 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , surpassing the performance of the noble metal system Pt-C/NF||RuO 2 /NF (1.61 V). This highlights its potential as a cost-effective alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts for scalable hydrogen production. The enhanced catalytic performance can be primarily attributed to the synergistic interplay of three key factors: the superior conductivity provided by MXene-engineered NF substrates, the Zn doping-induced crystalline-to-amorphous phase reconstruction, and the morphological transformation from micrometer-scale architectures to nanoscale structures. This study proposes an innovative “substrate–structure–composition” synergistic strategy that establishes a new paradigm for designing highly efficient non-noble metal HER electrocatalysts, thereby propelling the scalable industrial implementation of electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production. Strong interfacial coupling in the hybrid catalysts could enhance catalytic performances. In this work, N, P were co-doped in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived Co-based materials (denoted as CoP/NC) via in-situ carbonization and phosphating strategy, which accordingly induced strong interfacial coupling, leading to promote the catalytic activity in overall water splitting. In detail, the CoP/NC-2 presents the overpotential of 98 and 139 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, and 295 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH at 20 mA cm −2 , which is excellent during the non-noble metal-based catalysts. It also achieved a potential of 1.69 V ( η 20 ) in the overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculation reveals that the in-situ N, P co-doping induced strong interface coupling, which enhances the interaction in the interface of catalysts and improves electron conduction. More importantly, it contributes to adjusting electronic structure and d -band center, optimizing the adsorption energy for HER and/or OER and improving the kinetics of water splitting reaction. This work sheds new light on the heteroatom doping strategy to construct bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalyst with boosting electrocatalytic performance in energy conversion application.

The development of cost-effective catalysts with high activity and stability over a wide pH range is urgent, but there are great challenges in the selection and design of catalyst materials. In this work, cobalt phosphide nanoparticles were modified onto tungsten carbide nanowire arrays (CoP@WC/CC) on carbon cloth substrate by a two-step method. The construction of CoP@WC heterostructure results in the downward shift of the d-band center, which optimizes the adsorption energy of catalyst and reaction intermediates. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of CoP and WC contributes to the alkaline HER kinetic process. In addition, binder-free self-supporting nanoarray have excellent electrical conductivity, large specific surface area and strong structure, which is conducive to charge/matter exchange and catalyst stability. The results show that CoP@WC/CC can effectively drive HER over a wide pH range and exhibit better catalytic performance than the single component control sample. In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH, CoP@WC/CC can drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with only 52 and 70 mV, while showing excellent stability without obvious performance degradation during 100 h of constant current test. A proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) using CoP@WC/CC catalyst operates stably for 200,000 s at 30 mA cm −2 . This study provides a new reference for the design and development of high efficiency, low cost and wide pH-universal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a broad pH range has received considerable attention. In this work, we prepared multi-dimensional MoS 2 /S-CoP heterojunction catalysts by utilizing the carbon clothes supported ZIF-67 array as templates combining with Mo-ion exchange and high-temperature phosphorization-sulfidation strategy. The introduction of MoS 2 into S-CoP results in electron redistribution and the formation of a distinctive space charge region at the two-phase contact interface, thereby effectively tuning surface properties, enhancing electron conductivity, and improving electrocatalytic activity. According to Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the introduction of MoS 2 is advantageous for the adsorption and desorption of H*, resulting in the value of ΔG H* very close to zero. Furthermore, the adsorbed water molecules are more readily activated, rendering the ΔG H2O-dis decrease, thus significantly promoting HER activity. These features contribute to robust HER electrocatalytic performance in a wide pH range and even in seawater, which is also beneficial for industrial applications. In particular, MoS 2 /S-CoP exhibits superior HER performance in alkaline seawater, requiring only 197 and 228 mV to reach the current densities of 100 and 200 mA cm -2 , respectively. This study offers novel perspectives on high-performance heterostructures for HER electrocatalysts in alkaline seawater environments.

Alkaline water electrolysis techniques have enormous potential for industrial-scale hydrogen generation, but a lack of effective and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts capable of steady high-current density operation has hampered progress. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been considered promising OER electrocatalysts, but their poor electrical conductivity impedes hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Integrating LDHs with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) can potentially achieve bifunctional capability by overcoming individual limitations. Herein, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni heterostructured catalyst was rapidly synthesized by a scalable two-step electrodeposition method. The integration of NiFe LDH with CoP enhanced its electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, electron transfer occurred from the metal atoms to the more electronegative phosphorus, facilitating phosphorus to act as a proton acceptor and expedite the HER process. Benefiting from the synergistic integration and optimized electronic structure, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni exhibited excellent alkaline water-splitting performances with low overpotentials of 260 mV for HER and 351 mV for OER at 400 mA/cm 2 . The CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni two-electrode-based alkaline electrolyzer displayed a cell voltage of 2.13 V and stable operation for 100 h at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm 2 . This work elucidates a strategy to tackle critical challenges impeding the design and preparation of high-current-density tolerant bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient and inexpensive catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for the commercial viability of electrochemical sustainable energy technologies. In this study, a La-CoP/Co(OH)2 nanoarray supported on nickel foam (NF) was successfully prepared using the secondary hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating method. The as-prepared La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF material exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF was 114 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and the Tafel slope was estimated to be 99 mV dec−1. The decoration of Co(OH)2 nanosheets on La-CoP nanorods with the textured surface not only provides a large surface area and more active sites but also promotes the transfer of electrons between Co(OH)2 and La-CoP, which accelerates the reaction rate and further improve the HER performance of the composite material. Additionally, the fabricated catalyst exhibits good stability and durability in alkaline media. This approach provides a feasible and effective strategy for exploring electrocatalysts with high efficiency and low prices for the electrolysis of water.

We reported the synthesis of CoP particles embedded in N-doped carbon sheets (CoP/NCS) as an efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting. In the synthesis, Co 2+ ions were firstly coordinated with 8-hydroxy quinoline (8-HQ) to form a sheet-like precursor (Co-HQ). Then, the CoP/NCS was obtained by controllable phosphorization of Co-HQ precursor. The electrochemical test indicated that CoP/NCS can be used as a bifunctional catalyst to catalyze hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH. For HER, the CoP/NCS can drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 (η10) at a low overpotential of 71 mV. The catalyst also shown the good activity for OER with the onset overpotential of 254 mV, and η10 of 313 mV. The cell assembled by using CoP/NCS as both cathode and anode needed a cell voltage of 1.63 V to achieve current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The results also indicated that the catalytic activity of CoP/NCS is related to the suitable conductivity and surface areas. The interaction between carbon sheets and CoP particles is also favorable for improving the performance.

The design of earth-abundant and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is crucial for hydrogen production through overall water splitting. Herein, we report a novel nanostructure consisting of vertically oriented CoP hierarchical nanosheet arrays with in situ-assembled carbon skeletons on a Ti foil electrode. The novel Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) template-derived hierarchical nanosheet architecture effectively improved electrical conductivity, facilitated electrolyte transport, and increased the exposure of the active sites. The obtained bifunctional hybrid exhibited a low overpotential of 72 mV at 10 mA cm−2and a small Tafel slope of 65 mV dec−1for HER, and an improved overpotential of 329 mV and a Tafel slope of 107 mV dec−1for OER. Furthermore, the assembled C@CoP||C@CoP electrolyzer showed excellent overall water splitting performance (1.63 V) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2and superior durability. We report the synthesis and electrocatalytic properties of a CoMoO 4 -CoP heterostructure anchored on a hollow polyhedral N -doped carbon skeleton (CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC) for water-splitting applications. The preparation involved the anion exchange of MoO 4 2- to the organic ligand of ZIF-67, the self-hydrolysis of MoO 4 2- , and NaH 2 PO 2 phosphating annealing. CoMoO 4 was found to enhance thermal stability and prevent active site agglomeration during annealing, while the hollow structure of CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC provided a large specific surface area and high porosity that facilitated mass transport and charge transfer. The interfacial electron transfer from Co to Mo and P sites promoted the generation of electron-deficient Co sites and electron-enriched P sites, which accelerated water dissociation. CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH solution, with overpotentials of 122 mV and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC‖CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC two-electrode system only required an overall water splitting (OWS) cell voltage of 1.62 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline electrolytic cell. In addition, the material showed comparable activity to 20% Pt/C‖RuO 2 in a pure water home-made membrane electrode device, demonstrating potential for practical applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Our results suggest that CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC is a promising electrocatalyst for efficient and cost-effective water splitting.

The inexpensive and highly efficient electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting electrolysis have displayed promising practical applications to relieve energy crisis. Herein, we prepared a high-yield and structurally regulated bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide electrocatalyst by a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and subsequent low-temperature phosphating treatment. The tailoring of nanoscale morphology was achieved by varying the input ratio and phosphating temperature. Thus, an optimized FeP/CoP-1-350 sample with the ultra-thin nanosheets assembled into a nanoflower-like structure was obtained. FeP/CoP-1-350 heterostructure displayed remarkable activity toward the OER with a low overpotential of 276 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and a low Tafel slope of only 37.71 mV dec−1. Long-lasting durability and stability were maintained with the current with almost no obvious fluctuation. The enhanced OER activity was attributed to the presence of copious active sites from the ultra-thin nanosheets, the interface between CoP and FeP components, and the synergistic effect of Fe–Co elements in the FeP/CoP heterostructure. This study provides a feasible strategy to fabricate highly efficient and cost-effective bimetallic phosphide electrocatalysts.

Green hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting currently suffers from the key issues of high energy consumption and cost. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of highly efficient and stable clustered CoP nanowires electrocatalysts on nickel foam. Moreover, an ion exchange strategy was proposed to precisely control the doping content of iron to further modify the intrinsic electrochemical activity of CoP nanowires. The introduction of iron effectively alters the surface atomic configuration and electronic structure of CoP and increases the active sites, thus accelerating the overall reaction rate and enhancing the catalytic performance. It has been demonstrated that the CoFeP-30-30/NF electrode exhibits platinum-like catalytic activity with only an overpotential of 29.8 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and outstanding stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction . The synthetic strategy of CoFeP/NF electrode proposed in this work will significantly promote the development of highly efficient transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts with lower overpotential and better stability.

The imitation and exploration of natural structures and characteristics are the inspiration source for science and technology progress. Herein, we report a method for preparing CoP anchored carbon microtubes (CoP@BCMT) by continuous hydrothermal, carbonization and phosphorization processes using cattail fibers (CFs) as carbon sources. The surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups acted as the growth sites for CoP fixed and grew in special positions. Co was anchored to BCMT surface through –OH groups and C-O-Co bonds were formed between CoP and BCMT. Surface bonding can ensure the growth of CoP at specific sites. The ultra-thin carbon layer covered CoP was deposited by the deposition of suspended carbon during CFs carbonization. CoP size, dispersibility and adhesion were maintained well due to surface coating and bonding. C-O-Co bonds promoted electron transfer and optimized adsorption energy of hydrogen, which was evaluated by density functional theory calculations. CoP@BCMT exhibited a low overpotential of 49 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability for 72 h. We modified commercial carbon nanotubes with surface hydroxyl groups and then combined with CoP, which greatly improved the catalytic performance. This work provides us with ideas for learning and using biomass to prepare advanced catalysts.
