Fe oxides and fulvic acids together promoted the migration of Cd(II) to the root surface of Phragmites australis

Jiajun Wen,Zhongwu Li,Changsheng Jin,Jia Chen,Changqing Cai

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) or iron/manganese (hydro)oxides were important factors in the migration of Cd in sediments of wetlands. DOM and Fe oxides simultaneously affect the longitudinal and transverse migration of Cd in wetlands sediments of plants was still unclear. In this study, a 14-day rhizobox experiment was conducted and the result showed that the rhizosphere effect of Cd migration was only limited to the upper layer of sediments (− 2 to − 4 cm). Fe with fulvic acid (FA) simultaneously existed can precipitate Cd(II) from supernatant to sediments downward. Fe oxides at sediment concentration could effectively prevent Cd(II) from migrating to root surface (0.21 vs 0.02 at%). While Fe oxides with FA together at sediment concentration could effectively promoted the migration of Cd(II) to root surface (0.07 vs 0.08 at%). The formation of organo-metallic complexes of Fe in the presence of FA profoundly proved this finding (increased by ~33.0%). And the polysaccharides and aromatics in organic matter were the chief functional groups participating in the incorporation of Cd and Fe oxides. The findings reveal the migration rules of Cd(II) in sediments by FA and Fe oxides and give an insight into the mechanisms of Cd(II) migration to the root surface around wetland plants.

A simple electrochemical method for Cd(II) determination in real samples based on carbon nanotubes and metal-organic frameworks

Ling Yu,Jing-Wei Wan,Xian-Zhu Meng,Hui-Wen Gu,Ying Chen,Hong-Chao Yi

The establishment of a simple and effective method for determination of heavy metal ions has great significance due to the high hazard of heavy metal ions to public health and environments. Herein, we developed a facile way to synthesise a nanocomposite comprised of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and explored its application in constructing an electrochemical (EC) sensor for detection of Cd2+ in aqueous solutions. The sensing surface was simply fabricated by casting a drop of CNTs-MOFs nanocomposite onto the electrode. After drying at room temperature, the modified electrode was immersed in a Cd2+-containing acetate buffer solution to accomplish the EC measurement. The morphology of materials was characterised by SEM. The EC characterisations validated the good conductivity and excellent Cd2+-responsive property of CNTs-MOFs. As expected, the analytical performance for Cd2+ determination was satisfactory with a wide linear detection range of 0.3 μM-150 μM, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 μM and good selectivity. Detection of Cd2+ in real samples was also realised. Moreover, if under other potentials, even the analysis of other heavy metal ions such as Pb2+ and Cu2+ can be achieved with our sensing platform. This work provided a versatile way for detecting heavy metal ions in complicated samples.

Biomass-derived carbon/iron composite (FexOy-BC (RM)) with excellent Cd(II) adsorption from wastewater – Red mud resource utilization

Jiamin Qi,Hengxi Zhu,Tianyu Yang,Xingyuan Wang,Zixuan Wang,Xiaoli Lei,Bin Li,Wenmin Qian

Red mud is an industrial by-product produced in the process of alumina refining. It contains many iron elements, and the traditional resource utilization method is to extract it. This study took an alternative approach by using red mud's iron content as the substrate to synthesize a novel iron-biochar adsorbent for removing heavy metals from wastewater. Walnut shell biochar was reacted with the iron in red mud via an in-situ reduction–oxidation process to produce an iron-carbon composite adsorbent (FexOy-BC). A series of characterization analyses (e.g., SEM, FTIR, XPS, etc.) and batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the properties and Cd(II) removal performance of the adsorbent, respectively. Response surface methodology was further employed to optimize the adsorption conditions, identifying the ideal 6 g/L adsorbent dose, 10 mg/L initial Cd(II) concentration (C 0 ), and pH 6. The optimized quadratic model demonstrated excellent fit, with an average Cd(II) removal efficiency of 92.59 % under optimal conditions. The adsorption mechanism, renewability, and preliminary cost-benefit analysis indicate that FexOy-BC has the potential to be a highly efficient and sustainable adsorbent. In summary, the new method can recover resources from red mud waste and synthesize heavy metal adsorbents, which comprehensively solves two long-standing problems of industrial waste.

Conductive nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet-encapsulates bismuth nanoparticles for simultaneous high-performance detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Yue Feng,Hongli Zhao,Tong Feng,Xue Liu,Minbo Lan

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two of the most toxic heavy metals, which cause serious pollution to the environment. It is of great significance to develop electrochemical sensing platforms that can be used for the efficient and simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). Herein, bismuth nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Bi@NC) were successfully synthesized. An electrochemical sensor based on Bi@NC was proposed for the high-performance determination of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II). Encapsulated and uniformly distributed Bi nanoparticles with abundant active sites form alloys with Cd(II) and Pb(II), and the conductive nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet accelerates the electron transport rate, thus the electrochemical signals of Cd(II) and Pb(II) are significantly amplified. Under optimized conditions, Cd(II) and Pb(II) can be simultaneously detected in concentrations ranging from 1 to 150 μg L −1 , with sensitivity of 0.48 μA μg −1 L and 0.36 μA μg −1 L, respectively. Meanwhile, the sensor possesses the outstanding advantages of ultra-high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and storage stability, being able to serve as an electrochemical platform for Cd(II) and Pb(II) sensing in fruit and river water.

Facile fabrication of highly porous MgO-modified biochar derived from agricultural residue for efficient Cd(II) removal from wastewater

Hai Liang,Xinyu Feng,Xiuyuan Zuo,Zhihan Zhu,Siman Yang,Baowei Zhu,Wanting Wang,Jingjing Zhang,Gang Li

MgO-modified biochar (MgO-BC) has demonstrated enormous potential for practical application of Cd(Ⅱ) removal from wastewater. Exceptionally numerous MgO adsorption sites and enhanced porosity of MgO-BC are both critical for efficiency Cd(Ⅱ) removal. However, the pursuit of high-content of MgO while maintaining unobstructed pore structure remains a challenge due to the blockage of BC pores by the MgO particles. Herein, we demonstrated that Mg(NO 3 ) 2 can synergistically enhance the porosity and MgO active site of biochar attributing to the oxidation of nitrate. The prepared MgO-BC exhibits highly porous framework structure. Remarkably, further adsorption results indicate the MgO-BC has outstanding adsorption capacity of Cd(Ⅱ) in solution. The immobilized contaminant Cd(Ⅱ) onto MgO-BC was predominantly attributable to the chemical and physical interaction, including ion exchange, cation-π interaction, surface complexation and electrostatic interaction. This strategy demonstrates a novel route to develop efficient adsorbents by tailoring structure and metal oxide via nitrate activation.

Hong-Mei Liu,Xiao-Na Shang

Through the self-assembly reaction of 5-substituted isophthalic acid and bis(imidazolyl) ligands with Cd(II) ion or Zn(II) ion, two new coordination polymers with the chemical formulae of [Cd(5-meo-ip)(bmip)]n (1) and [Zn(5-pro-ip)(bip)]n·2 n(H2O) (2) (5-meo-H2ip = 5-methoxyisophthalic acid, 5-pro-H2ip = 5-propoxyisophthalic acid, bmip = 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazolyl)propane bip = 1,3-bis(imidazolyl)propane) were successfully obtained and structurally characterized by a series of characterization techniques. Moreover, compounds 1–2 show intense blue luminescence at room temperature. Furthermore, the assessment of their treatment activity on the uterine fibroids combined with ultrasound therapy was evaluated and the specific mechanism was investigated at the same time. Firstly, the effect of compound treatment on uterine fibroids apoptosis was detected via flow cytometry. Next, the apoptotic signaling pathway activation was detected through the Caspase-3 and Caspase-8 Activity Assay Kit.

A highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for Cd(II) based on protic salt derived nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbon

Xingxing Wu,Shucheng Wu,Yingchun Li,Han Chen,Qunhui Yuan,Wei Gan

Lately, an “all-in-one” strategy via direct pyrolysis of protic salt has attracted great attention in the preparation of hetero-doped porous carbons due to its distinctive simplicity. However, protic salt derived carbons usually process large grain sizes thus hamper their applications. Herein, a protic salt derived N, S co-doped porous carbon (N, S-PC) with improved porosity was synthesized by nanocasting and carbonization of protic salt. In the nanocasting silica sphere was used as auxiliary template and an easily obtained protic salt ([pPDA][nHSO 4 ]) was served as C, N and S sources. The obtained N, S-PC contains rich N, S contents and hierarchical textural porosity, thus favors the electrochemical detection of toxic cadmium ions . The N, S-PC based sensor shows excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Cd(II) versus other metals, with a low detection limit of 0.1 μg L −1  (S/N = 3) over a wide concentration range of 4–80 μg L −1 . Applications of the N, S-PC based sensor for Cd(II) assay in tap water samples achieved results with good recoveries, indicating that the N, S-PC based electrode is promising in real sample analysis.

Yihua Zhang,Sheng Xu,Wenting Li,Zhenghao Li,Jiali Cao,Lingli Liu,Jinlong Cui,Meng Cao,Heng Liu

A Cd(II)-imprinted electrochemical sensor based on CA-rGO/CS was constructed. • An extremely low detection limit of 0.05 μg/L was achieved. • The sensor exhibited excellent selectivity toward Cd(II) among interfering ions. • River water samples could be directly analyzed with high recovery rates (95%–102%). An ion-imprinted electrochemical sensor based on Cysteamine (CA)-reduced graphene oxide/chitosan (IIP/CA-rGO/CS/GCE) composite was constructed for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cd(II) in aqueous solutions. The electrochemical performance of the sensor was systematically investigated using techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and its detection efficiency in real water samples was evaluated. Experimental results indicated that this functional sensor exhibited a very wide linear detection range of 0.1–160 μg/L and an extremely low detection limit of 0.05 μg/L for Cd(II). It demonstrated excellent recovery rates (95%–102%) and good repeatability (relative standard deviation, RSD ≤ 3.86%) in real water samples. Additionally, this sensor combines high sensitivity, high selectivity, and outstanding adaptability to real-world samples, providing an innovative and efficient approach for the electrochemical analysis of heavy metal ions. Weakened adsorption energy barrier by C–N bond elongation in graphitic carbon nitride enhances electrochemical detection of trace Cd(II)

Zhongyou Jiang,Shanshan Dong,Dingying He,Jiazheng Yang,Suqing Dai,Shuaitao Peng,Suhua Chen

Bonded nitrogen of lone pair electrons gives a chance for carbon-based substrates to complex with and consequently electrochemically analyze heavy metals, e.g., cadmium(II) (Cd(II)). However, the carbon atom bonded with nitrogen atom present positively charged and could electrostatically hinder Cd(II) adsorption, leading to a limited electroanalytical sensitivity. In this study, we adopted a sequential iron occupying and nitric acid etching strategy to elongate C–N bond in graphitic carbon nitride (CN), which could weaken the energy barrier for Cd(II) adsorption. Material characterizations show the iron occupying and nitric acid etching strategy successfully elongated C–N bond without damaging the skeletal structure of CN and significantly enhanced Cd(II) adsorption capacity. Experiments combined with first principle calculations verified the efficient and sensitive binding of Cd(II) with nitrogen in the elongated C–N. As a result, in comparison with pristine CN, the C–N elongated material (marked as EtCN–Fe 0.3 ) possessed a much higher sensitivity (22.34 vs. 16.92 μA ppb −1  cm −2 ) and a dramatically lower limit of detection (LOD) (0.29 vs. 2.22 ppb). The sensor demonstrates a broad linear range (1−500 ppb), exceptional reproducibility (relative standard deviation = 1.4 %), and long-term stability (only 1.1 % of sensitivity loss over 10 days). EtCN–Fe 0.3 electrode even showed high recovery rates (98.2−102.4 %) in various real waters, which were in agreement with Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)/Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) methods. This study provides a facile strategy to activate carbon materials to electrochemically detect trace heavy metals with precision and cost-effectiveness.

Simultaneous remediation of As(V), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution and soil using Fe/Ca-modified biochar

Yan Zhou,Wenhui Liu,Dandan Chen,Bangwei Liu,Ping Lu,Yiwei Zhang

A novel Fe/Ca-modified biochar (BC) derived from corn stalk was prepared in this study for the simultaneous adsorption and immobilization of arsenic, cadmium and lead in aqueous solution and soil, respectively. The adsorption experiment in aqueous solution indicated that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited excellent removal efficiency (R, %) towards arsenic (46.3%), cadmium (76.3%) and lead (93.6%). The presence of cadmium and lead could enhance the adsorption efficiency of arsenic by facilitating the formation of ternary complexes with it. Moreover, both cooperative and competitive effects occurred between cadmium and lead adsorption. When the distribution coefficient of cadmium and lead was equimolar, cooperative adsorption prevailed. However, when the distribution coefficient deviated from this balance, competitive adsorption dominated with a higher affinity for lead. The soil culture experiment demonstrated that the utilization of 1Ca-Fe@BC could enhance the stability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil by enhancing soil cation exchange capacity and pH while reducing dissolved organic carbon. The competitive and cooperative effects of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil were consistent with those found in aqueous solution. The results showed that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited an excellent remediation efficiency for both arsenic, cadmium and lead-contaminated aqueous solution and soil.

Salicylic acid-modified defective NH2-MIL-125/sodium alginate composite aerogel beads for enhanced Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Bihe Chen,Ruoshan Yang,Mengyang Li,Yajing Niu,Jinyao Hu,Yingying Wang,Wenzhi Tang,Jingbo Zhou,Zhonghong Li

The threat of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in water demands advanced adsorbents. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential for heavy metal ions adsorption, their microporous nature and powdery form limit practicality. Thus, we engineered a sodium alginate composite aerogel bead loaded with salicylic acid-modified defective NH 2 -MIL-125, for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. By adjusting the solvent volume ratio to regulate the crystal morphology and introducing salicylic acid as a fragmented ligand to compete with NH 2 -BDC to coordinate with Ti-oxo clusters, a defective Ti-MOFs with mesoporous structure (pore size increased from 2.30 to 8.93 nm) and abundant active sites was successfully developed. Further integration with sodium alginate formed millimeter-scale aerogel beads, improving the reusability and enhancing adsorption performance: the maximum adsorption capacities of 428.01 mg g −1 for Pb(II) and 179.67 mg g −1 for Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption process, described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm models, is driven by multilayer chemical adsorption via electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and coordination reactions with −COOH, −NH 2 and −OH groups. The beads also exhibit excellent selectivity and reusability, maintaining high efficiency of ∼97 % for Pb(II) over 5 cycles. This work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance and recyclable adsorbents for adsorbing heavy metal ions from water.

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-g-polymethyl acrylate as adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution

Jia Qiujin,Zhang Wanting,Li Dongping,Liu Yulong,Che Yuju,Ma Qinglin,Meng Fanjun

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-graft-polymethyl acrylate (Cell-g-PMA-HZ), an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution, has been prepared by ceric salt-initiated graft polymerization of methyl acrylate from microcrystalline cellulose surface and subsequent hydrazinolysis. The influences of initial pH, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of Cell-g-PMA-HZ as well as adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic properties were examined in detail. As for Cd(II) adsorption, kinetic adsorption can be explained by pseudo-second-order, while adsorption isotherm fits well with Langmuir isotherm model, from which maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity can be derived as 235.85 mg g −1 at 28 °C. Further thermodynamic investigation indicated that adsorption of Cd(II) by adsorbent Cell-g-PMA-HZ is endothermic and spontaneous under studied conditions. On the other hand, isotherm of Pb(II) adsorption fits well with Freundlich isotherm model and is more likely to be a physical-adsorption-dominated process. Consecutive adsorption–desorption experiments showed that Cell-g-PMA-HZ is reusable with satisfactory adsorption capacity.
