Pristine and Ce-doped (3, 4, 5 at% Ce) α -Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes were synthesized by electrospinning method . The morphologies and structures of these samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The gas sensing properties of the four samples were investigated. The results showed that the sensitivity of the 4 at% Ce-doped α -Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes reached 21.5–50 ppm acetone at 240 °C, which was about 8.3 times larger than that of pure α -Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes . Meantime, the response and recovery times were about 3 and 8 s, respectively. The sensitivity of the lowest detecting limit to 1 ppm acetone was about 3. Moreover, the sensor also possessed the good selectivity and long-term stability to acetone.

CaO sorption-enhanced biomass gasification (SEBG) enables in situ CO 2 capture and hydrogen production; however, CaO-based materials often suffer from performance loss during repeated operation. In this work, Ce-promoted CaO-based materials were prepared by introducing different secondary promoters (Ni, Al, Fe, Cu, Co, and Cr). The materials were evaluated using pine wood pellets in a laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor with batch biomass feeding and continuous N 2 /steam flow, and each cycle included 10 min gasification followed by 10 min air regeneration. The effects of steam-to-biomass mass ratio (S/B) and gasification temperature were first investigated, and S/B = 0.5 and 750 °C were selected for promoter comparison. At these conditions, Ce incorporation improved H 2 yield retention during repeated gasification and regeneration cycles. Secondary promoters led to different balances between H 2 yield and H 2 yield retention over repeated cycles. Fe10Ca90Ce10 produced the highest H 2 yield of 1098 mL g −1 biomass (64 vol% of the syngas), representing a 31% enhancement relative to Ca90Ce10. Ni10Ca90Ce10 also achieved a high H 2 yield of 912 mL g −1 biomass (66 vol% of the syngas), with only a 5% decrease after ten cycles. Al10Ca90Ce10 and Cr10Ca90Ce10 showed better H 2 yield retention, with the H 2 yield of both samples increasing by approximately 8% relative to the first cycle. These results indicate that Fe is more favorable for maximizing H 2 yield, whereas Ni, Al, and Cr are more favorable for maintaining H 2 yield during repeated operation, providing guidance for selecting secondary promoters in Ce-promoted CaO-based materials for SEBG systems.

Heterometallic regulation stabilizes Ce-MOFs for phosphate removal. • Al/Ce-MOF shows high phosphate capacity (313 mg g −1 ). • Dual-metal sites enable synergistic adsorption of phosphate. Excessive phosphate in aquatic environments poses serious ecological risks, and adsorptive removal is considered an effective strategy to mitigate this issue. Despite cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) exhibit strong affinity toward phosphate, their practical application is often limited by insufficient stability in aqueous environments. In this study, a heterometallic regulation strategy was employed to enhance the structural stability of Ce-MOFs by incorporating Al 3 + into the framework. The resulting Al/Ce-BDC-NH 2 exhibited significantly improved structural properties, with the specific surface area increasing by more than 23-fold compared with pristine Ce-BDC-NH 2 . Adsorption experiments showed that Ce-BDC-NH 2 and Al/Ce-BDC-NH 2 achieved maximum phosphate adsorption capacities of 327 and 313 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, indicating monolayer chemisorption behavior. To further explore practical applicability, Al/Ce-BDC-NH 2 was immobilized onto microcrystalline cellulose to fabricate MCC@Al/Ce-BDC-NH 2 microspheres, which achieved a breakthrough point after treating 430 bed volumes in dynamic column experiments. Mechanistic analysis revealed that phosphate removal mainly proceeds through ligand exchange, electrostatic interaction, and metal-phosphate complexation. This work demonstrates that heterometallic regulation is an effective strategy to simultaneously enhance the stability and adsorption performance of Ce-based MOFs, providing guidance for the design of robust MOF adsorbents for phosphate remediation. Developing highly efficient, stable, and economical catalysts is crucial for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Herein, Ce was successfully doped into the lattice of the LaCoO 3 perovskite, and the Ce substitution significantly promoted the catalytic performance of the lanthanum-cobalt perovskite for toluene oxidation. La 0.95 Ce 0.05 CoO 3 catalyst demonstrated the optimal catalytic activity, achieving a toluene conversion of 90% at 208 °C, which was 35 °C lower than that of LaCoO 3 . La 0.95 Ce 0.05 CoO 3 maintained excellent stability during extended reaction (1200 min) and exhibited good water resistance. Ce substitution led to an increase in the relative content of surface Co 3+ species, leading to a higher number of active sites on the catalyst surface. Furthermore, it was found that Ce substitution also enhanced the mobility of lattice oxygen in perovskite. The types of intermediate species remained unchanged, however, the formation and consumption rates were significantly accelerated by Ce substitution. These findings provided new insights into how Ce substitution promoted the catalytic performance of LaCoO 3 and contributed to the development of catalysts for toluene oxidation.

Inorganic micro- or nanocrystal/polymer composite scintillators have been widely used in X-ray and neutron detection, but most of them are unable to satisfy the requirements of multiple detections at the same time owing to the limited absorption cross-sections of radiations. Here, we report bright, single-phase Ce-doped LiYSiO4 with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 68% by optimizing raw material ratios and doping concentrations. The electronic structures and traps were investigated by calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) methods and optical experiments. Further, transparent Ce-doped LiYSiO4/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite scintillators have been obtained by optimizing preparation processes, and their applications for X-ray imaging and thermal neutron detection have been demonstrated. The results show that the composite scintillator achieves a resolution of 7 line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) at a modulation transfer function (MTF) for 0.2 under X-ray irradiation. The light yield under thermal neutron irradiation is 4000 photons/thermal neutron, and the pulse decay curves consist of two fast-decaying components of 4 and 48 ns. The neutron-gamma events were discriminated by a pulse gradient analysis (PGA) method with a figure of merit (FOM) of 1.53. The transparent, flexible, and fast-decaying composite scintillators developed in this work may be used for multimodal radiation detection.

Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation is crucial for pollutant removal and hydrogen purification. In recent years, copper–cerium (Cu–Ce)-mixed oxide catalysts have attracted significant attention due to their excellent activity and stability in CO oxidation. This study presents an innovative, environmentally friendly electrosynthesis method for producing stable, structured Cu–Ce catalysts in mesh form. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional pellet catalysts, such as fragility and poor thermal conductivity. The results demonstrated that incorporating cerium (Ce) enhanced the catalytic activity for CO oxidation threefold. A series of in situ characterizations revealed that the introduction of Ce led to the formation of a Cu–Ce mixed oxide solid solution, which significantly improved catalytic performance. Furthermore, higher pretreatment temperatures facilitated the decomposition of Ce compounds (nitrate and hydroxide), which promotes the formation of Cu–Ce solid solutions and increases the concentration of active intermediate species (Cu + ‒CO) during the reaction. This process ultimately enhanced the catalyst’s activity.

The Ce-modified OMS-2 catalyst (Ce x -OMS-2) was synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis method, after which its catalytic efficacy in the selective reduction of NO by CO was assessed. The experiments showed that Ce 0.08 -OMS-2 was capable of 100% NO conversion between 175 and 300 °C when 0.05%NO, 0.1%CO, 5%O 2 and N 2 were used as equilibrium gases, and the N 2 selectivity peaked at 93.2% at 175 °C. Additionally, Ce 0.08 -OMS-2 exhibits good sulfur resistance in the presence of 0.02% SO 2 and maintains more than 88% NO conversion at 175–275 °C. By using BET, XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, and In situ DRIFTS to characterize the catalysts, the effects of doping the active metal Ce on the physicochemical characteristics of OMS-2 catalysts were under investigation. In conclusion, the improvement of the low-temperature activity of the Ce x -OMS-2 catalyst is facilitated by lower agglomeration and crystallinity , larger specific surface area, smaller average pore size, enhanced surface oxygen vacancies, increased Mn 4+ concentration, and richer Brønsted acid. Reaction gas adsorbed species and intermediates on the catalyst surface were dynamically captured during In situ DRIFTS experiments. The CO-SCR reaction of the catalyst was found to follow the E-R mechanism below 200 ℃ and the L-H mechanism at 200–350 ℃.

To address the limited functionality of pure Hydroxyapatite (HA), cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ce-HA) with different Ce contents was synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and Ce-HA/PPy composites were further prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole. The crystal structure, micromorphology, and surface chemical properties of the materials were analyzed. Their photothermal performance, in vitro ion release behavior, and antibacterial properties were systematically studied. Ce was introduced into the HA lattice in mixed valence states (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ), and PPy formed a continuous surface-associated coating on Ce-HA, yielding a stable composite structure. The Ce-HA/PPy composite containing 1.0 mol% Ce exhibited the most favorable photothermal properties. This optimal performance was demonstrated by a photothermal conversion efficiency of 37.6% and good stability when irradiated with an 808 nm laser at 2 W/cm 2 The composite material exhibited antibacterial rates of up to 95.26% and 93.59% toward Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), respectively, under laser irradiation, and its antibacterial mechanism stems from the synergistic effect between the high photothermal conversion efficiency of PPy and Ce ions. The release amount of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ions from the composite material is within the physiological safety range. The Ce-HA/PPy composite developed in this study exhibits promising photothermal antibacterial performance and potential for biomedical photothermal antibacterial applications.

To enhance the electrochemical performance of NiMn layered double hydroxides (LDH), this study explores the Ce-doped NiMn-LDH (CeNiMn-LDH) as a cathode material for supercapacitors. In the CeNiMn-LDH structure, partial substitution of Ni/Mn ions by Ce increases the number of active sites, facilitates electron transfer, and improves current density, leading to a significant enhancement in the electrochemical properties compared with NiMn-LDH. Experimental results show that the 0.3CeNiMn-LDH electrode delivers excellent electrochemical performance, achieving a specific capacitance of 1928.16 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. Furthermore, an assembled CeNiMn-LDH//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 36.36 Wh/kg and a power density of 850 W/kg at 1 A/g. Therefore, the strategy of employing CeNiMn-LDH offers an effective technical approach for improving the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor cathode materials, demonstrating considerable potential for practical applications.

Background LaFeO 3 has unique physicochemical properties and exhibits great application potential in fields such as catalysis, sensors, energy conversion and storage, as well as magnetic storage. LaFeO 3 possesses fascinating magnetic characteristics. Ce doping in LaFeO 3 can bring about changes in the physicochemical properties. Method A simple electrospinning and annealing way were used to fabricate Ce-doped LaFeO 3 nanofibers, such as La 0.9Ce 0.1 FeO 3 , La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3 , and La 0.7 Ce 0.3 FeO 3 . The perovskite orthorhombic structures of the fabricated samples were revealed by Rietveld refined XRD patterns. The magnetic characteristics of these fabricated nanofibers were clarified by a Quantum Design SQUID vibrating sample magnetometer. Significant finding Magnetic properties indicated that LaFeO 3 nanofibers featured the coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. An appropriate amount of Ce doping can notably enhance the ferromagnetism, with the magnetization increasing significantly. The internal mechanism through which Ce doping influenced the magnetism of LaFeO 3 nanofibers was thoroughly explored, providing a crucial theoretical basis and experimental reference for the optimal design and extensive application of LaFeO 3 -based magnetic materials. These findings are expected to inspire the advancement of lanthanum ferrite nanomaterials for applications in storage devices and sensors.

Fabricating efficient and stable photocatalysts with an improved photocatalytic property is necessary to decontaminate wastewater. Herein, the Ce-MOF@h-CeO 2 microspheres with a hollow structure are designed and synthesized. The unique hollow structure with the π-π conjugate organic ligand offers abundant reactive sites and a charge transfer channel, both enhancing the performance of photocatalysts. The SEM and TEM tests showed that the Ce-MOF@h-CeO 2 composite retains the hollow microsphere structure, and its diameter is about 600–900 nm. At the same time, the prepared composite showed excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light-driven, within 30 min dark adsorption and 150 min visible light, the degradation rate for RhB reached 95.5% of Ce-MOF/h-CeO 2 -2 composite, which were 7.17 and 4.46 times of h-CeO 2 and Ce-MOF, respectively. Furthermore, the composite of Ce-MOF@h-CeO 2 -2 exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency (3419.38 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 ), which was 15.16 and 10.91 times greater than that of the pure samples. This study provides helpful results of the metal–organic framework that can sensitize effectively the inorganic semiconductor materials for improving photocatalytic performance.

In this work, a ceria promoted Ni-based catalyst supported in mesoporous montmorillonite (MMT) was developed and evaluated in ethanol steam reforming . This Ni-Ce/MMT catalyst was synthesized by an ultrasound assisted cation exchange impregnation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption, H 2 temperature-programmed reduction and transmission electron microscopy. TEM images of Ni-Ce/MMT presented that narrow Ni nanoparticles (av. 6.0 nm) were uniformly deposited within the mesoporous MMT support. This was attributed to the strong interaction between Ni and ceria and the confinement effect from the framework of MMT support. The catalytic activity and stability of Ni-Ce/MMT were studied in steam ethanol reforming and compared with Ni/MMT. The higher ethanol conversion and H 2 selectivity of Ni-Ce/MMT demonstrated the addition of ceria facilities the reaction of ethanol steam reforming. Additionally, the ethanol conversion was much more stable on Ni-Ce/MMT than on Ni/MMT during a long-term ethanol steam reforming reaction, illustrating that the catalyst deactivation was preferably suppressed with the help of ceria. In short, the Ni-Ce/MMT is a promising catalyst for ethanol steam reforming owing to the remarkable effect of ceria as well as the confinement effect of MMT support which can effectively suppress the Ni sintering and carbon deposition .
