Hierarchical structure can significantly increase the reactive sites and provide advantages for heterojunction engineering in the field of photocatalysis. However, it is still a great challenge to realize efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production by controlling the band structure and constructing Z-scheme heterojunction system based on the hierarchical photocatalyst. In this paper, a CdS/Co 9 S 8 Z-scheme heterojunction system was prepared by depositing CdS nanoparticles on nanoflower-structured Co 9 S 8 hierarchical photocatalyst, which showed enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of the CdS/Co 9 S 8 Z-scheme heterojunction system is 11.60 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 13.6 and 55.2 times that of CdS and Co 9 S 8 , respectively. The synergistic effect of the hierarchical structure and the Z-scheme heterojunction makes the photogenerated charge carriers quickly and efficiently transfer to the surface of the photocatalyst, which accelerates the photocatalytic hydrogen production process.

Highly effective bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts play a key role in fuel cells (FCs), metal–oxygen batteries, and water splitting devices. In this paper, metal organic layer (MOL) derived Co/Co9S8 nanoparticles coated with N,S co-doped graphene-like carbon nanosheets were synthesized with the help of the space-confinement effect of montmorillonite (MMT). The as-prepared material shows excellent electrocatalytic activity both for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions in 0.1 M KOH solution: its ORR onset potential is 0.93 V (vs. RHE) and the limiting diffusion current density is 4.7 mA cm−2. Moreover, the retention of current for the as-prepared material is 85% after a stability test for 10 000 s for the ORR, while those of the template free catalyst and commercial Pt/C glided below 80%. Additionally, its Tafel slope is 265 mV dec−1, which is much smaller than that of the control sample, suggesting the excellent OER kinetics. The excellent catalytic activity and stability can be attributed to the relatively higher specific surface area, higher number of pyridinic-N and Co–Nx active sites, and higher graphitization degree compared to the template free catalyst.

Improving the Pt atoms utilization efficiency on self-supported electrodes is crucial for industrial seawater hydrogen production , but effective strategies are still lacking. Herein, we reported a novel strategy to anchor highly surface-exposed Pt single atoms on Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 with abundant S vacancies (Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv) as a self-supported electrode. Physical characterizations and theoretical calculations confirm that the strong Pt–S electron bridges with the coordinating role of surface S vacancies triggers the d -orbital electron rearrangements and regulates the local electron structures between the Co/Ni and Pt sites. Notably, the Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv electrode displays an ultralow overpotential of 18 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater . More importantly, our Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv electrode assembled into an alkaline electrolysis cell can work continuously for 50 h under alkaline seawater @ 60 °C. This work provides a promising strategy for designing highly surface-exposed single-atomic catalyst for large-scale hydrogen evolution through seawater electrolysis.

To achieve broad commercialization of rechargeable metal–air batteries, the development of non-precious metal-based bi-functional oxygen electrocatalysts is critical. In this study, we prepared N,S co-doped porous carbon materials containing Co9S8 nanoparticles (Co9S8/NSC) through a one-step pyrolysis process. The process involved the pyrolysis of a polydopamine (PDA) coated Co-formic acid framework (Co-FF) derived Co3O4 and thiourea. The improved catalyst Co9S8/NSC-1 exhibited satisfactory long-term durability and superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, the half-wave potential (E1/2) of the ORR reached 0.83 V, and the OER overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) was 300 mV. The zinc–air battery (ZAB) based on Co9S8/NSC-1 assembly had a maximum power density of 102.0 mW cm−2 and the cycle life reached 500 cycles. The material preparation method was simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive, providing a feasible strategy for the development of non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts.

Na–CO 2 batteries are prospective in energy storage and CO 2 recycling applications; development of a high-efficiency, low-cost electrocatalyst to promote CO 2 reduction and carbonate decomposition is extremely vital for practical Na–CO 2 batteries. Herein, a highly efficient cathode catalyst for rechargeable hybrid Na–CO 2 batteries is successfully synthesized by encapsulating highly dispersed Co/Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles into carbon skeletons, consisting of biomass-derived S, N-co-doped hierarchically porous carbon (Co/Co 9 S 8 @SNHC). The conductive and hierarchically porous framework structure of the Co/Co 9 S 8 @SNHC can not only accelerate electron transport , electrolyte infiltration , and CO 2 diffusion but also can inhibit overgrowth and agglomeration of Co/Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles and expose numerous high density of active sites, as well as offer sufficient space to store discharge products. Benefiting from the synergistic effect among S and N dopants , carbon defects, and Co/Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles in robust porous carbon structure, the hybrid Na–CO 2 batteries displayed a low charge overpotential (only ~0.32 V) at 0.2 mA/cm 2 and repeatedly charged and discharged over 200 cycles at 0.1 mA/cm 2 . Besides, an ultrahigh areal capacity of ~18.9 mAh/cm 2 was obtained at 0.5 mA/cm 2 , the highest value to date for Na–CO 2 batteries. Meanwhile, the hybrid Na–CO 2 battery charging from Na 2 CO 3 @C catalytic cathode demonstrated the high catalytic activity of biomass-derived S,N-co-doped hierarchically porous carbon (Co/Co 9 S 8 @SNHC) for CO 2 reduction and carbonate decomposition. Given this finding, this work might open up a potential avenue for the reasonable design of low-cost and highly efficient catalysts for advanced metal-CO 2 batteries systems.

It is of paramount importance to develop highly efficient and Cl − corrosion-resistant bi-functional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for application in seawater-based Zn-air batteries (S-ZABs), but the process remains full of challenges. Herein, a facile and effective strategy was adopted to fabricate the N-doped carbon shell armored ‘Janus’ Co/Co 9 S 8 heterojunction catalyst (denoted as Co/Co 9 S 8 -NMC). The well-defined ‘Janus’ structure endows the catalyst with a ‘synergistic effect’ between Co and Co 9 S 8 species, which can also accelerate the electron transfer via ‘Janus’ interfaces, thus boosting ORR/OER performance. Besides, N-doped carbon shells can be considered armor for protecting the catalyst from Cl − corrosion. By virtue of these merits, the resulting Co/Co 9 S 8 -NMC catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for ORR and OER in seawater electrolyte, accompanied by a half-wave potential of 0.83 V and a low overpotential of 298 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 . Besides, the S-ZABs based on the Co/Co 9 S 8 -NMC catalyst deliver a high maximum power density of 162.29 mW/cm 2 and robust stability over 600 h. This work advances the development of highly efficient bi-functional catalysts for S-ZABs.

Herein, a N,S,O-doped Co/CoO/Co 9 S 8 @carbon hybrid (Co/CoO/Co 9 S 8 @NSOC) has been constructed by calcinating a Co-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) with 4,4-bipyridine and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid as linkers. Co/CoO/Co 9 S 8 @NSOC exhibited a high and recycled catalytic efficiency for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 20 mg/L) with a reaction rate of 1.31 min −1 , which was 5.2 times than that of Co-MOF. The catalytic behavior should be attributed to the rich active sites, lamellar morphology, superhydrophilicity, and magnetism. Furthermore, the Co/CoO/Co 9 S 8 @NSOC was immobilized on a filter membrane (CMFM) to adapt to the flowing system, which could recycle 20 times without losing activity. To employ in a large-scale static environment, the Co/CoO/Co 9 S 8 @NSOC was loaded on the commercial sponge (CoSPG). In a 50 L water tank, the CoSPG realized to decompose 160 mg/L SMX solution with 37 h and had long-term stability over 10 days. Notably, the PMS cost of treating one ton of wastewater is only $0.34, indicating a huge industrial application value.

Cobalt sulfides as persulfate activator have received increasing interest in the field of persulfate-based advanced oxidation process. In this study, Co 9 S 8 anchored in N, S, O heteroatoms co-doped carbon (CoSx@N-S-O-C) composite was prepared with different sulfur precursors (sulfur, thiourea, thiophene and benzyl disulfide), and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The effect of temperature, pH, inorganic ions, humic acids and water components on SMX degradation was investigated. The results showed that sulfur precursor could regulate the catalytic activity of the composite through changing the cobalt speciation and carbon structure. The catalytic activity was highest when the molar ratio of sulfur to cobalt was 5:1 (CoS x @N-S-O-C-5). Sulfate radicals (dominant) and hydroxyl radicals contributed to SMX degradation. The intermediate products during SMX degradation were identified, and the possible pathway of SMX degradation was proposed. Pyridinic N, Co-N, cobalt, S 2− , S 2 2− , C-S-C and C-SO x were active sites for PMS activation.

High activity trifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts , targeting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are rationally designed by integrating the merits of both Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles and carbons nanosheets . Herein, Co 9 S 8 loaded with S, N co-doped carbon core–shell catalyst (Co 9 S 8 @SNC) was reasonably designed and synthesized by using the strong coordination effect between Co 2+ and C S at the molecular level. The significant synergistic effect between the S, N co-doped carbon shell and Co 9 S 8 core endows the catalyst with excellent catalytic performance for ORR, HER, and OER reactions. The carbon shell enhances the conductivity of the hybrid material , while the Co 9 S 8 core provides the main catalytic active sites. More specifically, the half-wave potential for ORR is 0.846 mV, and the overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER are 320 mV and 170 mV, respectively. To test its practical application, zinc-air battery assembled by Co 9 S 8 @SNC shows a high power density of 239 mW cm −2 , excellent rechargeability, and long cyclic stability. This work provides a promising and extensible method to in-situ synthesize core–shell metal sulfides loaded S, N co-doped carbon composites, which can be a promising candidate for electrocatalytic material in energy storage and conversion devices.

Metal-free and metal-based electrocatalysts are designed according to different principles, but there should be an intimate connection between them. In this work, a simple yet cost-effective strategy is proposed to etch and disperse graphene oxide (GO) and porous hollow carbon shell loaded with CoS 2 (PHCS-CoS 2 ) into a porous skeleton similar to "highway" to effectively "trap" graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) via a one-step process. Due to interconnected networks and size effects, N-S codoped porous graphene carbon sheets along with GOQDs (N,S-PGCS(QDs)) have eminent properties for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore, the metal-free system can be transformed to a metal-based electrocatalyst (N,S-PGCS(QDs)-Co 1-x S/Co 9 S 8 ) loaded with Co 1-x S/Co 9 S 8 nanohybrids , which demonstrates superior electrocatalytic characteristics than Pt/C+RuO 2 in terms of half-wave potential (0.85 V), current density, methanol tolerance, the potential difference between E ORR1/2 and E OER10 (0.68 V), and long-term stability. The Zn-air battery assembled with N,S-PGCS(QDs)-Co 1-x S/Co 9 S 8 shows a large peak power density of 168.2 mW cm −2 , a capacity performance up to 817.9 mAh g −1 , an ultra-high specific energy density of 973.3 Wh kg Zn −1 and considerable durability. The findings above may provide a scalable synthetic guidance and a novel direction for the design of metal-free and metal-based electrocatalysts.

Herein, we first propose a facile strategy to synthesize Co9S8 and MoS2 nanocrystals embedded in porous carbon nanoflake arrays supported on carbon nanofibers (Co9S8-MoS2/N-CNAs@CNFs) by the pyrolysis of Mo-doped Zn, Co zeolitic imidazolate framework grown on carbon nanofibers and subsequent sulfuration. The electrocatalyst shows high and stable electrocatalytic performance, with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V for oxygen reduction reaction and an overpotential at 10 mA cm–2 for oxygen evolution reaction (0.34 V) and hydrogen evolution reaction (0.163 V), which outperform the metal–organic framework-derived transition metal sulfide catalysts reported so far. Furthermore, the Co9S8-MoS2@N-CNAs@CNFs are employed as an air cathode in a liquid-state and all-solid-state zinc-air battery, presenting high power densities of 222 and 96 mW cm–2, respectively. Such excellent catalytic activities are mainly owing to the unique three-dimensional structure and chemical compositions, optimal electronic conductivity, adequate surface area, and the abundance of active sites. Thus, this work provides an important method for designing other metal–organic framework-derived three-dimensional structural sulfide quantum dot multifunctional electrocatalysts for wider application in highly efficient catalysis and energy storage.
