A magnetic aggregation bed photocatalytic reactor (MABPR) was designed and constructed to achieve continuous photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) solution without subsequent photocatalyst separation. A magnetic photocatalyst, CoFe 2 O 4 -Ag 2 O, was scattered and immobilized on aggregated flower-like Fe 3 O 4 structures, which were anchored to the reactor with external magnets at the bottom. Under optimal operating conditions, MO is effectively photodegraded in the MABPR in 60 min with a fluid velocity of 0.01 m/s and a 100 mT magnetic field under natural illuminance (E v ). Magnetic aggregates in the MABPR support the magnetic photocatalyst, increasing their effective irradiation area and also increasing fluid disturbance to enhance mass transfer. Additional energy input for photodegradation and photocatalyst recovery were not required to operate the MABPR; the mass of photocatalyst did not decrease over the course of the experiment. The MABPR proposes a promising design for a usable, cost-effective, low-energy, continuous photoreactor using a magnetic photocatalyst.

A novel electromagnetic wave absorber of three-dimensional carbon networks decorated with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (3DC/CoFe2O4) was prepared through a simple freeze-drying method followed by a high-temperature calcination process. The 3DC/CoFe2O4 composite prepared at 630 °C (S630) exhibits broadband electromagnetic wave absorption with only 20 wt% filler loading. The effective absorption bandwidth (reflection loss [RL] < −10 dB) of S630 reaches up 6.63 GHz, and the minimum RL of −19.5 dB is obtained at 15.45 GHz when the matching thickness is 2.5 mm. The excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance of the 3DC/CoFe2O4 composite can be attributed to good impedance matching and strong attenuation capacity.

In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) is successfully activated by cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA) to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Increasing either PAA (25–200 μM) or CoFe 2 O 4 (25–200 mg/L) dose accelerated SMX degradation in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system, and the best removal of SMX (87.3%) was acquired with 200 μM PAA and 0.1 g/L CoFe 2 O 4 at neutral condition. Addition of humic acid or HCO 3 – inhibited SMX removal, whereas Cl – had little impact. The redox cycle of ≡Co 3+ /≡Co 2+ on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface dominated PAA activation to produce organic radicals (R-O • ) including CH 3 C(O)O • and CH 3 C(O)OO • accounting for SMX degradation. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation and identified oxidation products, SMX transformation pathway was proposed to be initiated by electron transfer reaction with R-O • . The insignificant variation of acute toxicity, the fine CoFe 2 O 4 stability and the good removal of some other micro-organic pollutants suggested the potential applicability of the CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system in degrading micro-organic pollutants.

The magnetic composite CoFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 based on metal organic framework (MOF) with high specific surface area and high activity was synthesized by solvothermal method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, respectively. After characterization, CoFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 was applied to heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading methylene blue (MB). The result showed that the 0.075-CoFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 sample had the excellent catalytic activity . After catalytic reaction for 60 min, the degradation efficiency of MB (20 mg/L) reached about 97.9% at room temperature of 20 °C. The quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that SO 4 − and OH radicals were the main active species in MB degradation. Meanwhile, the possible MB degradation mechanism was proposed. After four catalytic cycles, the degradation efficiency of MB has not been greatly reduced, indicating the practical application potential of CoFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 in water pollution cleanup.

The rational design of photocatalytic nanomaterials with unique structures is critical for remediating environmental problems and thus reducing ecological risks. In this work, we employed H2 temperature-programmed reduction to modify MFe2O4 (M = Co, Cu, and Zn) photocatalysts for obtaining additional oxygen vacancies. After activation of PMS, naphthalene and phenanthrene degradation rates in the soil phase were increased by 3.24-fold and 1.39-fold, respectively, and 1.38-fold for naphthalene in the aqueous phase by H-CoFe2O4−x. The extraordinary photocatalytic activity is attributed to the oxygen vacancies on the H-CoFe2O4−x surface, which promote electron transfer and thus enhance the redox cycle from Co(III)/Fe(III) to Co(II)/Fe(II). In addition, oxygen vacancies are used as electron traps to hinder the recombination of photogenerated carriers and accelerate the generation of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. Quenching tests showed that the addition of p-benzoquinone resulted in the greatest decrease in the degradation rate of naphthalene (inhibition of about 85.5%), demonstrating that O2˙− radicals are the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of naphthalene. H-CoFe2O4−x showed improved degradation performance in synergy with PMS (82.0%, kapp = 0.00714 min−1) while maintaining excellent stability and reusability. Hence, this work provides a promising approach for the design of efficient photocatalysts to degrade persistent organic pollutants in soil and aqueous environments.

In the study, a series of novel Z-scheme biochar@CoFe 2 O 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 photocatalysts were synthesized and employed to degrade bisphenol A under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). The structural morphology, optical properties and physicochemical properties of composites were characterized by means of TEM , XRD , FT-IR, XPS , UV–Vis, BET, EIS and VSM analysis. The photocatalytic performances of the photocatalysts were evaluated systematically. The MBA-3 photocatalyst exhibited the highest photocatalytic and mineralization ability within 60 min among all photocatalysts, 91.12% and 80.23%, respectively. After four cycles, the degradation of BPA still kept the photocatalytic activity of 73.94%, and the removal rate of TOC remained 58.96%. Moreover, the active species in the photocatalytic process were evaluated, and we proposed the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism for highly efficient degradation of BPA. According to the GC-MS results, the photodegradation pathway of BPA is also suggested. The present study has provided a valuable way of using the magnetic biochar in the design of new and efficient system for the degradation of organic pollutions in waste water .

Amino-functionalized nanocomposites with a magnetic CoFe2O4 core and an amorphous SiO2 shell have been designed and synthesized. The core–shell structure was characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR and XPS. CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 with a high saturated magnetization (28.09 emu g−1) can be easily separated under a moderate external magnetic field within one minute. In addition, the adsorption capacity of the CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) was 170.829, 144.948 and 110.803 mg g−1, respectively. The removal efficiency was increased from 12 to 85% with an increase in the pH from 4 to 6.5. The adsorbent can be recycled for at least four cycles with a feasible removal efficiency (85.41%). The adsorption process was fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the data of the present investigation, CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 could find potential applications in heavy metal ion wastewater treatment.

A magnetic photocatalyst, CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO, has been successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the as-obtained composite photocatalyst was evaluated using the degradation of tetracycline. When compared with single CdS and CoFe2O4, the hybrid material (CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO) can enhance the photocatalytic activity. The photocurrent responses and PL spectra indicate that the composite photocatalyst can effectively separate the electron–hole pairs and restrain their recombination. This was attributed to the high charge carrier mobility of rGO and the heterostructured photocatalytic system, which promotes the separation of charge carriers. In all, the CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO photocatalyst, as a strong magnetic photocatalyst, is promising for further practical application in wastewater treatment.

In this study, the polypyrrole/CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanohybrid (CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy) was prepared and then used as adsorbent and catalyst to remove anionic and cationic dyes. The hybrid material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, BET surface area, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Adsorption behaviors of the as-prepared composites for anionic dyes such as Methyl Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO) and Acid Fuchsin (AF) were conducted where the effects of solution pH, initial dye concentration, contact time and ionic strength were systematically studied. The equilibrium adsorption data of MB, MO and AF were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, yielding the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 137.00, 116.06 and 132.15 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second order model. The introduction of CoFe 2 O 4 into CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy hybrid could not only provide an effective magnetic separation performance, but also act as catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MEB), from aqueous solution. The results showed that CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy presented higher catalytic activity, better stability and reusability for the decolorization of MEB, resulting in an almost complete removal of 50 mg/L MEB after 30 min with 1.0 g/L catalyst and 4 mmol/L PMS . The characteristics of high adsorption capacity, effective separation, excellent catalytic activity and good reusability would make CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.

Heterogeneous catalytic activation is important for potential application of new sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidation process using sulfite as source of sulfate radical. We report herein a heterogeneous system for sulfite activation by CoFe 2 O 4 nanocatalyst for metoprolol removal. Factors that influence metoprolol removal were investigated, including pH and initial concentrations of components. The CoFe 2 O 4 nanocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the catalytic stability was tested by consecutive runs. Radicals generated in the CoFe 2 O 4 S(IV) O 2 system were identified through radical quenching experiments and by electron spin resonance (ESR). The catalytic mechanism was elucidated further by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic process was dependent on initial pH, and more than 80% of the metoprolol can be removed at pH 10.0 following the Langmubir-Hinshelwood equation. The generation of Co-OH complexes on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface was crucial for sulfite activation. SO 4 − was verified to be the main oxidative species responsible for metoprolol degradation. Other organic pollutants, such as sulfanilamide, sulfasalazine, 2-nitroaniline, sulfapyridine, aniline, azo dye X-3B and 4-chloroaniline, could also be removed in this CoFe 2 O 4 S(IV) O 2 system. The results suggest that the CoFe 2 O 4 S(IV) O 2 system has good application prospects in alkaline organic wastewater treatment.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been known pollutants, which are ubiquitous in various matrix, even in some food products and beverages like fruit juices. It is of great importance to develop efficient and simple method to detect them in such matrix. In this work, an effective magnetic composite integrating the advantages of the magnism of CoFe 2 O 4 , hydrophilicity and multisites of Ti 3 C 2 and high adsorption properties of polyaniline (CoFe 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 @PANI) was designed and synthesized. CoFe 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 @PANI-based magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was established for determination of nine PCBs in fruit juices. The developed method achieved low detection limits of 0.4–0.8 ng L −1 . The established method was validated with three beverages and achieved good spiked recoveries ranging from 77.2 % to 104.7 %. These findings exhibited that the established method was very simple, efficient, and credible for the analysis of PCBs in food, environmental, and other fields.

By modulating the mass ratio of hydrothermal agents to cobalt/iron precursors, Co3O4nanowires were successfully integrated into spinel-type Co/Fe@NF, forming a heterojunction anode for alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) hydrogen production. This Co3O4nanowire-assembled CoFe2O4nanosheet anode (Co/Fe(5:1)@NF) exhibits exceptional electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, requiring only 221 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm−2. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was employed as a model pollutant to investigate the anode sacrificial material; it achieved approximately 95% SMX degradation efficiency, reducing the OER potential of 50 mV/10 mA cm−2. SMX oxidation coupled with Co/Fe heterojunction structure partially substitutes the OER. Co/Fe heterojunction generates an internal magnetic field, which induces the formation of novel active species within the system. ·O2−is the newly formed active oxygen species, which enhanced the proportion of indirect SMX oxidation. Quantitative analysis reveals that superoxide radical-mediated indirect oxidation of SMX accounts for approximately 38.5%, Fe(VI) for 9.4%, other active species for 6.1%, and direct oxidation for 46.0%. The nanowire–nanosheet assembly stabilizes a high-spin configuration on the catalyst surface, redirecting oxygen intermediate pathways toward triplet oxygen (3O2) generation. Subsequent electron transfer from nanowire tips facilitates rapid3O2reduction, forming superoxide radicals (·O2−). This study effectively driven by indirect oxidation, with cathodic hydrogen production, providing a novel strategy for utilizing renewable electricity and reducing OER while offering insights into the design of Co/Fe-based catalyst.
