Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs)-based electrode materials with high capacity have attracted considerable interest as a promising anode material for lithium−ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a hierarchical cable-like structure composed of CoP@C core−shell nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in one-dimensional (1D) porous carbon framework intertwined with N-doped carbon nanotubes (CoP@C⊂PCF/NCNTs) is synthesized by a self-templating, self-catalytic, and subsequent vapor-phase phosphorization strategy. The unique nanoarchitecture regime provides multiple advantages. The 1D carbon framework allows for quick ion and electron access, maintaining the integrity and accommodating the volume change of the structure during repeated discharging/charging. The internal carbon shell can prevent the direct aggregation of CoP NPs on cycling. The external NCNTs on the surface supply a staggered conductive network to promote electrolyte penetration and charge transportation. Impressively, the as-fabricated hybrid nanocables deliver a reversible capacity of 712 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 for over 700 cycles with excellent rate capability as an anode material for LIBs. The significantly improved lithium storage properties of CoP@C⊂PCF/NCNTs reveal the importance of reasonable design and engineering of novel hierarchical structures with higher complexity.

Rational design of highly active electrode materials made of low-cost and earth-abundant transition metal phosphides is essential to boost the energy density and overall performance of electrochemical capacitors. In this work, homologous 3D NiCoP/CoP hetero-nanosheets network supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes are synthesized through one-step phosphorization of nickel cobalt hydroxide. The synergistic effects between NiCoP and CoP in the heterointerface are studied systematically through tuning the molar ratio of original Ni/Co. As a result, the optimized N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP (with the Ni/Co ratio of 1:2) reveals a remarkable specific capacity of 152 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and a superior rate capability with a capacity retention of 61% even at 30 A g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor assembled with N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP cathode and ZIF-67-derived porous carbon anode exhibits a high energy density of 45.5 Wh kg −1 at power density of 784 W kg −1 and excellent stability of 87% retention after 10,000 cycles at 12 A g −1 . Such excellent electrochemical performance of N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP is mainly ascribed to the strong synergistic effect between NiCoP and CoP in their heterojunctions, enlarged surface area and active sites due to the 3D nanosheets network and conductive N-CNTs support.

The combination of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) can be an effective way to amplify the signal intensity. In this work, an ECL aptasensor with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid–decorated cobalt phosphate (denoted as PTCA/CoP) as the ECL emitter and Au nanoparticles (NPs) as plasma was proposed for diclofenac assay. The prepared PTCA/CoP with special 1D/2D structure exhibited good ability and excellent ECL performance. The diclofenac aptamer acted as a bridge to link the PTCA/CoP and Au NPs; thus, the ECL performance of PTCA/CoP was greatly improved due to the plasma effect of Au NPs. Besides, it was found that the ECL signal of the aptasensor was obviously quenched by the introduction of diclofenac, which might be due to the transformation from the LSPR process to the resonance energy transform (RET) process. Under optimal conditions, the difference of ECL intensity was negatively correlated with the concentration of diclofenac in the range 0.1 pM to 10 μM with a low detection limit of 0.072 pM at the potential of −1.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl ( S / N = 3). The aptasensor was proved to be suitable for the detection of diclofenac in real samples, suggesting its great practicability. Graphical abstract

In this work, we fabricated a novel free-standing Fe doped CoP nanowire on carbon cloth (Fe–CoP/CC) electrode with high catalytic activity for Li–O 2 batteries. It is unexpected that the Li–O 2 battery with Fe–CoP/CC electrode demonstrated a low potential of 0.8 V and exceptional cycle stability of more than 500 cycles with no significant voltage attenuation compared with previously reported counterparts. Such excellent performance can be partly attributed to its fine nanowire structure and its large specific surface area (419.14 m 2 g −1 ). Furthermore, iron doping plays a crucial role in improvement of battery performance because the doped Fe can modulate the internal electronic structure and optimize the absorption of intermediate products, which have been proved to be the determinant for optimizing the catalytic activity. Thus, it is believed that heterogeneous element doping in binary or ternary metal compounds is a promising strategy to fabricate high performance oxygen electrode materials for Li–O 2 batteries in the next few years.

We reported the synthesis of CoP particles embedded in N-doped carbon sheets (CoP/NCS) as an efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting. In the synthesis, Co 2+ ions were firstly coordinated with 8-hydroxy quinoline (8-HQ) to form a sheet-like precursor (Co-HQ). Then, the CoP/NCS was obtained by controllable phosphorization of Co-HQ precursor. The electrochemical test indicated that CoP/NCS can be used as a bifunctional catalyst to catalyze hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH. For HER, the CoP/NCS can drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 (η10) at a low overpotential of 71 mV. The catalyst also shown the good activity for OER with the onset overpotential of 254 mV, and η10 of 313 mV. The cell assembled by using CoP/NCS as both cathode and anode needed a cell voltage of 1.63 V to achieve current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The results also indicated that the catalytic activity of CoP/NCS is related to the suitable conductivity and surface areas. The interaction between carbon sheets and CoP particles is also favorable for improving the performance.

Strong interfacial coupling in the hybrid catalysts could enhance catalytic performances. In this work, N, P were co-doped in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived Co-based materials (denoted as CoP/NC) via in-situ carbonization and phosphating strategy, which accordingly induced strong interfacial coupling, leading to promote the catalytic activity in overall water splitting. In detail, the CoP/NC-2 presents the overpotential of 98 and 139 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, and 295 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH at 20 mA cm −2 , which is excellent during the non-noble metal-based catalysts. It also achieved a potential of 1.69 V ( η 20 ) in the overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculation reveals that the in-situ N, P co-doping induced strong interface coupling, which enhances the interaction in the interface of catalysts and improves electron conduction. More importantly, it contributes to adjusting electronic structure and d -band center, optimizing the adsorption energy for HER and/or OER and improving the kinetics of water splitting reaction. This work sheds new light on the heteroatom doping strategy to construct bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalyst with boosting electrocatalytic performance in energy conversion application.

Alkaline water electrolysis techniques have enormous potential for industrial-scale hydrogen generation, but a lack of effective and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts capable of steady high-current density operation has hampered progress. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been considered promising OER electrocatalysts, but their poor electrical conductivity impedes hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Integrating LDHs with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) can potentially achieve bifunctional capability by overcoming individual limitations. Herein, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni heterostructured catalyst was rapidly synthesized by a scalable two-step electrodeposition method. The integration of NiFe LDH with CoP enhanced its electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, electron transfer occurred from the metal atoms to the more electronegative phosphorus, facilitating phosphorus to act as a proton acceptor and expedite the HER process. Benefiting from the synergistic integration and optimized electronic structure, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni exhibited excellent alkaline water-splitting performances with low overpotentials of 260 mV for HER and 351 mV for OER at 400 mA/cm 2 . The CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni two-electrode-based alkaline electrolyzer displayed a cell voltage of 2.13 V and stable operation for 100 h at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm 2 . This work elucidates a strategy to tackle critical challenges impeding the design and preparation of high-current-density tolerant bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient and inexpensive catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for the commercial viability of electrochemical sustainable energy technologies. In this study, a La-CoP/Co(OH)2 nanoarray supported on nickel foam (NF) was successfully prepared using the secondary hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating method. The as-prepared La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF material exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF was 114 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and the Tafel slope was estimated to be 99 mV dec−1. The decoration of Co(OH)2 nanosheets on La-CoP nanorods with the textured surface not only provides a large surface area and more active sites but also promotes the transfer of electrons between Co(OH)2 and La-CoP, which accelerates the reaction rate and further improve the HER performance of the composite material. Additionally, the fabricated catalyst exhibits good stability and durability in alkaline media. This approach provides a feasible and effective strategy for exploring electrocatalysts with high efficiency and low prices for the electrolysis of water.

The inexpensive and highly efficient electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting electrolysis have displayed promising practical applications to relieve energy crisis. Herein, we prepared a high-yield and structurally regulated bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide electrocatalyst by a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and subsequent low-temperature phosphating treatment. The tailoring of nanoscale morphology was achieved by varying the input ratio and phosphating temperature. Thus, an optimized FeP/CoP-1-350 sample with the ultra-thin nanosheets assembled into a nanoflower-like structure was obtained. FeP/CoP-1-350 heterostructure displayed remarkable activity toward the OER with a low overpotential of 276 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and a low Tafel slope of only 37.71 mV dec−1. Long-lasting durability and stability were maintained with the current with almost no obvious fluctuation. The enhanced OER activity was attributed to the presence of copious active sites from the ultra-thin nanosheets, the interface between CoP and FeP components, and the synergistic effect of Fe–Co elements in the FeP/CoP heterostructure. This study provides a feasible strategy to fabricate highly efficient and cost-effective bimetallic phosphide electrocatalysts.

Green hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting currently suffers from the key issues of high energy consumption and cost. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of highly efficient and stable clustered CoP nanowires electrocatalysts on nickel foam. Moreover, an ion exchange strategy was proposed to precisely control the doping content of iron to further modify the intrinsic electrochemical activity of CoP nanowires. The introduction of iron effectively alters the surface atomic configuration and electronic structure of CoP and increases the active sites, thus accelerating the overall reaction rate and enhancing the catalytic performance. It has been demonstrated that the CoFeP-30-30/NF electrode exhibits platinum-like catalytic activity with only an overpotential of 29.8 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and outstanding stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction . The synthetic strategy of CoFeP/NF electrode proposed in this work will significantly promote the development of highly efficient transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts with lower overpotential and better stability.

Herein, we report a novel nanostructure consisting of vertically oriented CoP hierarchical nanosheet arrays with in situ-assembled carbon skeletons on a Ti foil electrode. The novel Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) template-derived hierarchical nanosheet architecture effectively improved electrical conductivity, facilitated electrolyte transport, and increased the exposure of the active sites. The obtained bifunctional hybrid exhibited a low overpotential of 72 mV at 10 mA cm−2and a small Tafel slope of 65 mV dec−1for HER, and an improved overpotential of 329 mV and a Tafel slope of 107 mV dec−1for OER. Furthermore, the assembled C@CoP||C@CoP electrolyzer showed excellent overall water splitting performance (1.63 V) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2and superior durability. The imitation and exploration of natural structures and characteristics are the inspiration source for science and technology progress. Herein, we report a method for preparing CoP anchored carbon microtubes (CoP@BCMT) by continuous hydrothermal, carbonization and phosphorization processes using cattail fibers (CFs) as carbon sources. The surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups acted as the growth sites for CoP fixed and grew in special positions. Co was anchored to BCMT surface through –OH groups and C-O-Co bonds were formed between CoP and BCMT. Surface bonding can ensure the growth of CoP at specific sites. The ultra-thin carbon layer covered CoP was deposited by the deposition of suspended carbon during CFs carbonization. CoP size, dispersibility and adhesion were maintained well due to surface coating and bonding. C-O-Co bonds promoted electron transfer and optimized adsorption energy of hydrogen, which was evaluated by density functional theory calculations. CoP@BCMT exhibited a low overpotential of 49 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability for 72 h. We modified commercial carbon nanotubes with surface hydroxyl groups and then combined with CoP, which greatly improved the catalytic performance. This work provides us with ideas for learning and using biomass to prepare advanced catalysts.
