Traditional textile wastewater treatment methods face significant challenges in achieving effective dye/salt separation with low energy consumption. In this study, a high-performance loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane based on metal-polyphenol bio-adhesion was fabricated. By exchanging Fe 3+ onto Laponite (Lp) nanosheets, the coordination between tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ was controlled, optimizing the structure of the selective layer. Subsequently, PVP was introduced to regulate membrane structure owing to the hydrogen bonding between TA and PVP, thereby enhancing both separation performance and stability of the membrane. The optimized Fe@Lp/TA-PVP membrane exhibited favorable separation performance by modulating preparation conditions including the Fe 3+ exchanging on Lp nanosheets, PVP concentration, and coating time. The LNF membrane possessed high water permeability (167.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) and favorable separating efficiency for dyes from salts. A high rejection of 99.9 % was achieved for Congo Red and Methyl Blue, while the rejection of Na 2 SO 4 and MgCl 2 remained low, at 8.93 % and 2.21 %, respectively. Besides, the membrane demonstrated desirable antifouling capability. Therefore, this work enriches the applications of metal-polyphenol coordination in water treatment, provides new insights into the design of LNF membranes.

A series of Fe(III)-based coordination-driven metallogel (MOG) electrolytes are obtained by absorbing liquid electrolytes with MOGs and applied to quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The MOG, prepared by Fe 3+ and trimesic acid, presents a porous and flower-like structure, which can ensure the effective diffusion of I − /I 3 − ions and excellent infiltration to the TiO 2 photoanode. Moreover, the mechanical property of MOG is stable enough to guarantee the photovoltaic performances of DSSCs in the operating environment. In the MOG electrolyte, trimesic acid acts as the gelator to coordinate with Fe 3+ to form MOG. Furthermore, the condition of TiO 2 conduction band edge of quasi-solid-state DSSC shifts with the liquid electrolyte concentration increasing in MOG, which results in both V oc and J sc increasing firstly and then decreasing, and the process of electron kinetics is investigated to illustrate these differences. Finally, an excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency of 5.31% is obtained for MOG electrolyte–based quasi-solid-state DSSC.

To address the technical bottlenecks of the classic Fenton oxidation for anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) dewatering (e.g., high doses of Fe2+/H2O2/acid usage and slow reduction of Fe3+), we employed biodegradable tannin compounds as iron chelating and reducing agents to improve the Fenton reaction. Compared with the classic Fenton (pH 3.0), tannic acid (TA)-assisted Fenton enhanced the degree and rate of ADS dewatering (pH 5.2) with reductions of 99% in specific resistance filtration, 96% in capillary suction time, and 97% in filtration–compression time. Besides, this modification reduced the consumption of Fe2+/H2O2 by 50%. Mechanistically, TA could chelate Fe3+ to generate iron complexes while facilitating the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. This phenomenon avoided Fe3+ precipitation and accelerated Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling to produce more hydroxyl radical (•OH).•OH oxidation disintegrated CHOP-, CHONS-, and CHONSP-containing protein-/lipid-like substances within tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances. Bioflocs were dispersed into an irregular block-shaped structure with smaller particle sizes. Employing low-cost and readily accessible tannin-rich plant crude extracts derived fromAcacia mangiumas an alternative to purified TA in Fenton conditioning of ADS exhibited comparable enhancements in dewaterability characteristics. These findings demonstrated that the synergy between tannin compounds and Fenton oxidation could facilitate the cost-effective dewatering of ADS.

Crystallization of vivianite-phosphorus is a promising method to recover phosphate as a vital resource from sewage sludge hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) products. This study reveals the in-situ recrystallization mechanism of vivianite-phosphorus (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) regulated by FeCl 3 -assisted HTC in depth. The key finding includes the decipherment that phosphorus is mainly enriched in hydrochar (72.7 ± 2.9 %wt ∼ 84.4 ± 3.31 %wt). Further identified by HRTEM and XRD, dominant phosphorus is profiled as vivianite (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) with very few calcium phosphate crystals (Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ) formation in hydrochar at near-neutral condition. Under acidic conditions, HMF oxidation triggers reductive dissolution of surface-bound Fe(III)-phosphate complexes, releasing Fe 2+ , HPO 4 2− , and PO 4 3− . The anoxic, reducing conditions at circumneutral pH created by HTC, combining with favorable Fe: P ratio (1.72) and lower calcium concentration (532 mg L −1 ), comprehensively drives the crystallization of Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O. This demonstration-of-practice study provides deep insights into dual organic waste resource and energy valorization.

Poorly crystalline iron (Fe) oxides are commonly deposited on the surface of rice roots, forming an Fe plaque. This Fe plaque is an important area for Fe redox reactions because the poorly crystalline Fe is available for microbial transformations. However, it remains unclear what the mechanisms are that cause the root Fe plaque to affect CO 2 emissions from paddy soils . Thus, this study investigated the effects of Fe plaque on paddy soil CO 2 emissions and the associated mechanisms. Paddy soil with rice plant roots containing an Fe plaque-coating had 1.5-fold larger CO 2 emissions and higher expression levels of genes involved in soil carbon (C) degradation than Fe plaque-free roots, indicating that Fe plaque stimulated paddy soil derived CO 2 emissions. Fe plaque-coated rice roots, immersed in a 13 C-labeled glucose solution, emitted more CO 2 , with a higher abundance of 13 CO 2 , than the Fe plaque-free roots. These differences were not observed when the surfaces of the rice roots were sterilized. These results indicate that the Fe plaque-stimulated CO 2 emissions were due to soil microbial respiration , not autotrophic root respiration . Chelating the dissolved Fe on the root surface eliminated Fe plaque stimulation of CO 2 emissions, while Fe(III) supplementation correlated with enhanced CO 2 emissions. The stoichiometric mole ratio of the enhanced CO 2 emissions to the Fe(II) generated was comparable to the theoretical ratio of Fe(III) when used as an electron acceptor for organic C decomposition. These results showed that the Fe plaque enhancement of CO 2 emissions was coupled to Fe(III) reduction. Limiting the stimulating effects of Fe plaque on CO 2 emissions may be a potentially useful approach for mitigating organic C loss from paddy soils.

S(IV)-based advanced oxidation process has been applied for contaminants remediation. However, as a traditional source of sulfite (SO 3 2− ), Na 2 SO 3 is extremely soluble in water, resulting in a high concentration of SO 3 2− to quench the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, CaSO 3 was introduced instead of Na 2 SO 3 for its slow-released SO 3 2− ability and Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system was established for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) and other organic contaminants. The degradation efficiency of TCE reached 94.0% and TCE could be completely dechlorinated and mineralized, while the removal of other contaminants was all over 85.0% at the optimal tested conditions. Through EPR detection, ROS scavenging and probe tests, and quantification of ROS amounts, it was concluded that the dominant ROS in Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system were SO 4 − · and 1 O 2 , of which the transformation mechanism of SO 4 − · to 1 O 2 was revealed and demonstrated comprehensively. The synergistic contaminants degradation performance in different sulfur-iron-containing systems and in the presence of oxidants was evaluated. The effects of various solution conditions were assessed and Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system was of higher resistance on complex solution matrixes, suggesting the broad-spectrum and application perspective for the remediation of complex contaminants in actual water.

This study employs the Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system to degrade ibuprofen (IBP) and elucidate the key factors and mechanisms. Negligible IBP degradation is observed when CaSO 3 and Fe(III) are applied individually, but their combination significantly enhances it. At initial pH 3, 40 μΜ Fe(III), and 200 μM sulfite, 92.2 % of IBP was removed within 20 min. Quenching experiments indicated that SO 4 •– , •OH, and 1 O 2 collectively governed the degradation of IBP in the Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system. Additionally, dissolved oxygen is essential in the system by initiating the radical chain reactions. The degradation of IBP by the Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system is influenced by key operational parameters and the water matrix. Typically, the process exhibits optimal Fe(III) and sulfite concentrations and initial pH, an activation energy of 51.2 kJ·mol -1 , and is inhibited by common water constituents like humic acid (HA), Cl⁻, Br⁻ and Mg 2+ . Integrated LC/TOF/MS and DFT calculations identified hydroxylation and decarboxylation as the primary pathways for IBP degradation, with bioassays confirming decreased antibacterial activity due to toxic products. Overall, our finding indicate that the Fe(III)/CaSO 3 system is effective for the oxidation of IBP, but the process parameters need further optimization to enhance IBP degradation efficiency and reduce potential environmental risks.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a persistent sulfonamide antibiotic widespread in aquatic environments, resists conventional water treatment degradation. This work developed a NaOAc/Fe3+/O3homogeneous ozonation system for SMX abatement. Four comparative reaction groups confirmed significant synergism between trace Fe3+and sodium acetate. Under optimized near-neutral conditions, 96.19% SMX was removed within 30 min with kobs= 0.107 min−1, outperforming sole O3, O3/NaOAc and O3/Fe3+by 11.0%, 31.0% and 21.9% respectively. Single-factor tests revealed excess Fe3+or acetate suppressed catalytic activity, while alkaline conditions accelerated degradation yet aggravated iron precipitation. Radical quenching and p-CBA probing indicated that acetate coordination did not increase bulk ·OH exposure, while the stronger TEMP-derived TEMPO response after acetate addition was consistent with enhanced1O2-associated oxidation, suggesting that acetate altered the relative contributions of ozone-derived oxidation pathways. Post acetate background deduction, the ternary system achieved higher TOC/COD elimination. Twelve SMX intermediates were identified via LC-MS, with three ring-opening degradation pathways proposed. QSAR toxicity evaluation indicated that most intermediates possessed lower bioconcentration and developmental risks than raw SMX. Overall, the results indicate that weak acetate ligands can alter iron-mediated ozone oxidation pathways, providing a low-dose and economical strategy for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Hierarchically porous 3D Fe 0 aerogel overcomes agglomeration and passivation of Fe 0 nanoparticles. • Aerogel achieves 9590.25 mg/g uranium capacity which is 1.5 times that of conventional Fe 0 nanoparticles. • Electric field drives dynamic Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling on the aerogel to sustain active site regeneration for uranyl reduction. • Hierarchical pores create a localized microenvironment that enhances active site accessibility and Fe(II) retention. Electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) is a promising strategy, yet conventional Zero-Valent Iron (Fe 0 ) nanoparticles suffer from severe agglomeration and surface passivation. Herein, we designed a hierarchically porous 3D Fe 0 aerogel that overcomes these limitations by providing an interconnected conductive network and abundant accessible active sites. At −0.2 V vs. RHE and an initial U(VI) concentration of 500 mg/L, the Fe 0 aerogel exhibited a maximum capacity of 9590.25 mg/g after 48 h electrolysis, which is approximately 1.5 times that of conventional Fe 0 nanoparticles under identical conditions. The aerogel also exhibited excellent selectivity against competing ions and good tolerance to carbonate interference. Operando Raman spectroscopy and quasi-operando XPS revealed that the external electric field drove the dynamic Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle at the solid-liquid interface, which enabled the continuous in-situ regeneration of Fe(II) as the active electron-shuttling mediator for uranyl reduction. This electrochemically mediated mechanism effectively mitigates the severe surface passivation that plagues conventional iron-based electrodes. In-situ FTIR spectroscopy hinted at the formation of a distinct interfacial microenvironment within the porous architecture, potentially involving enhanced hydrogen-bonding interactions, which may further contribute to the extraction performance. Additionally, a continuous-flow reactor employing the aerogel as a flow-through cathode operated steadily in natural seawater for 10 days, achieving a stable extraction rate of 1.26 mg/g/day. This work elucidates the molecular-scale mechanisms of interfacial electroreduction, providing an innovative paradigm for the scalable mining of critical nuclear resources from real aquatic environments. The inherent inefficiency associated with the utilization of micro-concentration hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in conventional Fenton systems arises from the sluggish cycling between Fe(III) and Fe(II). To address this fundamental limitation, the present study demonstrates that complexes formed between Fe(III) and fulvic acid (FA) can effectively harness visible-light-driven ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). This photochemical process facilitates a synergistic dual-pathway activation of H 2 O 2 : 1) Fe(II) generated through intramolecular electron transfer reduction of the Fe(III)-FA complex directly activated H 2 O 2 ; 2) In the photoexcited *Fe(III)-FA complex, the reduction of the key intermediate *OOH lowered the activation energy barrier, facilitating the formation of ∙OH and O 2 ·- radicals. Moreover, at a stoichiometric molar ratio of H 2 O 2 to contaminant set at 1:1, contaminant removal efficiency achieves an impressive 95%. This light-enhanced mechanism establishes a new paradigm for efficient micro-concentration -level oxidation using H 2 O 2 , demonstrating exceptional effectiveness in eliminating trace pollutants.

The combination of persulfate (PS) activation by iron ions with electrochemical process (electro/Fe 3+ /PS) is a promising advanced oxidation process. However, almost all these systems were performed in an unbuffered solution and actually under acidic pH condition, with the electricity being frequently supplied by external power. Considering the high buffering capacity of wastewater and energy saving, peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by Fe(III) species with bioelectricity provided by microbial fuel cell (MFC) for bisphenol A (BPA) oxidation was investigated at fixed near-neutral pH as well as acidic pH. The results indicate that 90.8% of BPA could be removed at pH 2.5. Though the iron existed in the form of precipitate, BPA could still be efficiently removed at pH 6.0. The precipitate formed in the system at pH 6.0 was identified as the amorphous iron oxyhydroxides. Sulfate radicals in the bulk solution and that adsorbed on the precipitate were the dominant reactive species responsible for the oxidation of BPA in the homogeneous and heterogeneous MFC/Fe(III)/PDS processes, respectively. The mechanisms of BPA degradation at both pH values were proposed via EPR and quenching tests as well as XPS analysis. The effects of operating parameters, the mineralization, the mineralization current efficiency and energy consumption were also explored.

A new ratiometric electrochemical strategy for immobilization-free detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was constructed by using a capture DNA-polyaniline/copper ferrite nanoparticles/graphene oxide (cDNA-PANI/CuFe2O4/GO) composite as capture probes, which has a high specific surface area and good magnetic properties. Then trigger DNA/Au nanoparticles (tDNA/Au NPs) were used as signal amplification labels, and Pt (IV) and Fe (III) were chosen as the signal probes. In the presence of targets, the sandwich format among cDNA-PANI/CuFe2O4/GO, E. coli and auxiliary DNA (aDNA) was realized by using the aptamer recognition system. Then, the tDNA/Au binding could be anchored on the sandwich format due to the principle of base complementation between unpaired aDNA and tDNA. And the unbounded tDNA of tDNA/Au NPs could bind an amount of Pt (IV). After separation using a magnet, a handful of unbound Pt (IV) which remained in the supernatant reacted with a large number of Fe (III) ions, leading to a markedly increased IFe(III)/IPt(IV) value. Oppositely, the sandwich format could not appear in the absence of targets, and even the tDNA/Au could not be immobilized on it. So, the redox reaction between a large amount of Pt (IV) residue in the supernatant and Fe (III) was significantly successful, causing a low IFe(III)/IPt(IV) value. Under optimal conditions, we found that IFe(III)/IPt(IV) was linearly related to the logarithmic E. coli concentration with a low limit of detection (1.862 × 103 cfu mL−1). This devised ratiometric electrochemical method may develop into a powerful and effective means for the detection of E. coli in real samples, which may also be developed as a universal tool for another microorganism.
