A novel α-FeOOH modified wheat straw biochar (α-FeOOH@BC) was developed and the findings of the current study showed that α-FeOOH@BC is an efficient material for the simultaneous removal of cations (Cd(II)) and anions (As(III)) from aqueous solutions. The SEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis proved that α-FeOOH@BC was covered by α-FeOOH. In the single adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) were 62.9 and 78.3 mg/g, respectively. In the dual adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) dropped to 39.3 and 67.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and As(III) by α-FeOOH@BC were much higher by BC and α-FeOOH both in single and dual adsorbate system. The adsorption results were well fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption on α-FeOOH@BC had a competitive effect, and the dominant adsorption mechanisms were co-precipitation and ion exchange. Our study showed that α-FeOOH@BC could be an effective remediation material for Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption from aqueous environment.

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) resonance energy transfer system is constructed for 17β-estradiol (E2) detection using α [email protected] nanospheres as the ECL-active substrates and Ag NCs as an efficient quencher. CdS QDs loaded onto three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like α-FeOOH nanospheres (α [email protected] nanospheres) exhibited excellent ECL responses, which is attributed to dual-amplification of α-FeOOH frameworks. The 3D hierarchical structure of the α-FeOOH nanospheres provided abundant sites for loading ECL-active species, thus significantly improving the ECL performance of substrates; While Fe 3+ presented on surface of α-FeOOH nanospheres could be reduced to Fe 2+ in negative potentials, after which might activate persulfate in a Fenton-like process, resulting in more sulfate free radicals for more effective ECL responses via electron transfer reactions. Additionally, Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) stabilized by single stranded oligonucleotide were introduced as quenching probes for CdS QDs owing to the well-matched donor-acceptor spectrum for efficient energy transfer, which makes them appropriate for detection of E2. The proposed strategy displayed a desirable dynamic range from 0.01 to 10 pg mL −1 with a limit of detection of 0.003 pg mL −1 . The proposed strategy based on the ECL-RET strategy offered an ideal way for E2 detection, and also revealed an alternative platform for detection of other small molecules.

A textured CoFe 2 O 4 ceramic was fabricated by reactive template grain growth (RTGG) method using rod-like α-FeOOH particles as templates. The template particles were synthesized by hydrothermal method , the particles showed good crystallization and rod-like shape with a diameter of 0.1–0.2 μm and an aspect ratio of 20–50. { ll0 } oriented CoFe 2 O 4 ceramic was obtained after a sintering process. The ceramic sintered at 1150 °C for 4 h showed dense and oriented structure with orientation degree of 0.89. Different magnetic hysteresis loops were observed along the in-plane and out-of-plane direction of the textured CoFe 2 O 4 , which was due to anisotropy properties of the sample. The textured ceramic exhibited an in-plane M s enhancement (355 emu/cm 3 ) compared to that of the non-textured ceramics (320 emu/cm 3 ) in the same sintering conditions.

Solar-driven water evaporation is considered as the sustainable approach to alleviate freshwater resource crisis through direct use of solar energy. However, it is still challenging to achieve the multifunctional solar evaporators equipped with both high evaporation and purification performance to handle practical complex wastewater. Here, a simple and cost-effective multifunctional 3D solar evaporator is prepared by alternately decorating the commercial sponge with FeOOH quantum dots (FQDs) supported MXene sheets composites and chitosan hydrogel coatings for enabling the solar water evaporation and organic wastewater photodegradation simultaneously. MXene composites allow the solar evaporator with excellent photothermal conversion performance, the hydrophilic chitosan hydrogel coated interconnecting skeleton structures of sponge serve as the mass transfer and water transport channels. The Fenton-catalytic FQDs anchored on the MXene sheets surface accept the photo-generated electrons of MXene sheets to induce the organic pollutant photo-Fenton degradation reaction under sunlight irradiation. The resulting evaporator possesses both excellent water evaporation rate of 2.54 kg m −2 h −1 and high degradation efficiency (99.24% for methylene blue), coupled with durable salt-resisting performance during long-term seawater desalination (20 wt.% NaCl). This work provides a simple and feasible strategy for designing multifunctional solar evaporators to meet the potential application scenarios in practice.

Developing a low-cost and highly efficient semiconductor photocatalyst for the decomposition of organic pollutants and antibiotics is highly desirable. Herein, FeOOH nanosheets were prepared using a liquid-phase stirring technique and combined with ZnCdS (ZCS) nanoparticles to construct FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite photocatalysts. The photocatalytic efficiency of the FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite was evaluated for the decomposition of various pollutants, including rhodamine B, methylene Blue, and tetracycline. The FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic performance for the decomposition of various organics. Moreover, the optimized FeOOH/ZCS retained more than 90% of its initial photocatalytic activity even after five successful runs. Radical quenching test and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) play a dominant role for the decomposition of organics. The FeOOH/ZCS Z-scheme heterojunction significantly facilitates higher charge transfer efficiency and the generation of reactive radicals, resulting in excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. This work offers a new approach to synthesis FeOOH-based photocatalyst for the elimination of organics and antibiotics in water.

Throughout the nuclear power production process, the disposal of radioactive waste has consistently raised concerns about environmental safety. When the metal tanks used for waste disposal are corroded, radionuclides seep into the groundwater environment and eventually into the biosphere, causing significant damage to the environment. Hence, investigating the adsorption behavior of radionuclides on the corrosion products of metal tanks used for waste disposal is an essential component of safety and evaluation protocols at disposal sites. In order to understand the adsorption behavior of important radionuclides60Co,59Ni,90Sr,135Cs and129I on α-FeOOH, the influences of different pH values, contact time, temperature and ion concentration on the adsorption rate were studied. The adsorption mechanism was also discussed. It was revealed that the adsorption of key nuclides onto α-FeOOH is significantly influenced by both pH and temperature. This change in surface charge corresponds to alterations in the morphology of nuclide ions within the system, subsequently impacting the adsorption efficiency. Sodium ions (Na+) and chlorate ions (ClO3−) compete for coordination with nuclide ions, thereby exerting an additional influence on the adsorption process. The XPS analysis results demonstrate the formation of an internal coordination bond (Ni–O bond) between Ni2+and iron oxide, which is adsorbed onto α-FeOOH.

Biopolymer-based hydrogels have received great attention in wastewater treatment due to their excellent properties, e.g. , high adsorption capacity, fast kinetics, reusability and ease of operation. In the present work, cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogels were prepared via co-dissolution and regeneration process as well as hydrothermal in situ synthesis of β-FeOOH. Effect of β-FeOOH loading on the properties of the composite hydrogels and the removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO) was investigated. Results showed that β-FeOOH was uniformly loaded onto the hydrogel framework, and the nanoporous structure of composite hydrogels could increase not only the effective contact area between β-FeOOH and the pollutants but also the active sites. Moreover, the increased β-FeOOH loading led to the enhanced MO removal rate under light conditions. When the loading time was extended from 6 h to 9 h, the MO removal rate increased by 21%, which can be mainly due to the photocatalytic degradation. In addition, MO removal rate reached 97.75% within 40 min under optimal conditions and attained 80.81% after five repetitions. The trapping experiment and EPR results indicated that the main active species were hydrogel radicals and holes. Consequently, this work provides an effective preparation approach for cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogel with high adsorption and photocatalytic degradation, which would hold great promise for wastewater treatment applications.

Sulfadiazine (SDZ), a widely used antibiotic, poses significant environmental risks due to its persistence and potential to induce bacterial resistance. This study presents a novel FeOOH-modified iron foam (FeOOH/IF) catalyst for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade SDZ. The catalyst was synthesized via a simple NaBH₄-induced surface modification, forming FeOOH nanoflakes with abundant oxygen vacancies. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, EPR) confirmed the successful formation of FeOOH/IF with enhanced catalytic properties. The FeOOH/IF/PMS system achieved nearly complete SDZ removal (100 %) within 20 min, exhibiting 4.7 times higher k obs value (0.18 min −1 ) than unmodified IF (0.038 min −1 ). Mechanistic studies revealed a dual radicals ( • OH and SO 4 • − ) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 , Fe IV O, electron transfer) oxidation pathway, with non-radical processes dominating (53.12 % contribution). DFT calculations and LC-MS identified four primary degradation pathways, demonstrating effective detoxification of SDZ. Moreover, the as-synthesized exhibited excellent recyclability (over 90 % removal in the four repeated cycles) and versatility, efficiently degrading various organic pollutants (tetracycline, carbamazepine, etc.). This work provides a highly efficient, stable, and eco-friendly PMS-activating catalyst for antibiotic wastewater treatment, with insights into reaction mechanisms and practical applicability.

Exosome-based liquid biopsy has shown great promise in cancer diagnosis. Electrochemical biosensors, owing to their high efficiency, sensitivity, and operational simplicity, have become powerful tools for biological sample analysis. In this study, we developed a novel electrochemical biosensor based on FeOOH-mesoporous TiO 2 (FeOOH-mTiO 2 ) for label-free detection of exosomes in serum. Through a rationally engineered interface design, the biosensor addresses the critical challenge of simultaneously achieving high capture efficiency and high detection sensitivity. The composite material consists of a catalytic FeOOH core and a mesoporous TiO 2 shell. The high surface area of the mesoporous structure provides abundant active sites and enhances the selective interaction between TiO 2 and the phosphate groups on exosome membranes. Moreover, the formation of Ti–O–Fe interfacial bonds facilitate electron transfer and significantly improves the electrochemical response. The sensor achieves a detection limit of 2.04 particles/μL with a broad linear range of 10 2 –10 8 particles/μL, without the need for antibody-based capture or complex surface modifications. Clinical testing revealed that exosome levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal cancer were 2.9 to 3.1-fold higher than those in healthy controls. This work advances exosome liquid biopsy technology through innovative material design and demonstrates strong potential for clinical cancer diagnosis and monitoring.

Developing outdoor displays that combine low power consumption with high visibility remains a major challenge for sustainable information technologies. Electrophoretic displays (EPDs) are reflective and energy-efficient but suffer from poor color saturation, limited brightness, and the lack of nighttime emissive capability. Herein, we report that functional composite electrophoretic particles, denoted as FeOOH@QD, are prepared by grafting green CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) onto FeOOH pigment particles via a surface-initiated polymerization. The FeOOH@QD particles exhibit excellent charge stability and high color purity, as well as dual-mode optical behavior, showing vivid green reflection under daylight and bright green fluorescence under 365 nm UV excitation. By integrating these particles with modified white TiO2–KH570–PLMA electrophoretic particles, a QD-enhanced electrophoretic display (QDEPD) is fabricated. The QDEPD demonstrates rapid switching speeds (210–250 ms at ±30 V), high contrast ratios (3.6 in reflection mode and 22.6 in emission mode), long-term bistability with image retention over 24 h without power, and excellent cycling durability. Importantly, the dual-mode QDEPD operates without backlight under ambient light and requires only intermittent low-voltage driving, greatly reducing power consumption. By combining reflection and emission modes, the QDEPD enables environment-adaptive and energy-efficient viewing, highlighting its potential for sustainable outdoor display technologies.

In this work, bamboo charcoal (BC) is prepared by pyrolysis of bamboo. Then, KOH modification and surface deposition of Goethite (α-FeOOH) are performed to obtain a new KOH-modified BC loaded with α-FeOOH (FKBC) adsorbent for copper (Cu2+) and fluoride (F−) ion adsorption from aqueous solution. Surface morphology and physiochemical properties of the prepared adsorbent are characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration on Cu2+ and F− adsorption is also investigated. In addition, adsorption kinetics and isotherms are fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism is further characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Cu2+ absorption mainly occurs through ion exchange, coordination reactions, and surface precipitation, while the F− adsorption mainly occurs via ion exchange and hydrogen bonding. The selective adsorption experiments reveal that FKBC has good selectivity for Cu2+ and F−. The adsorption–desorption experimental results indicate that FKBC can be reused for Cu2+ and F− adsorption after regeneration. Results indicate that FKBC can be a promising adsorbent for Cu2+ and F− removal from aqueous solutions.

The photo-Fenton reaction has been widely applied in the decontamination of organic pollutants and has shown great potential in environmental remediation. The development of an appropriate catalyst with high activity and stability is essential for its success. Therefore, a composite catalyst was synthesized by in-situ mineralization of β-FeOOH nanorods on carbonized cellulose fabric (CCF) coated with polydopamine (PDA), which was denoted as β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF. The β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF catalyst with more than 77% degradation efficiency towards various contaminants and exhibited excellent chemical stability after six consecutive adsorption/degradation cycles. Radical scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the presence of hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) that play a crucial role in the photo-Fenton degradation process. In addition, the degradation mechanism and pathway of MB was inferred. This work provides new perspectives on developing catalysts that demonstrate high stability and accelerated electron transfer, which can enhance the application of the photo-Fenton process in practical wastewater purification.
