A visual assay for the detection of heparinase was developed on the basis of a ternary system of Hg2+–heparin–osmium nanoparticles (OsNPs). First, heparin-capped OsNPs (heparin–OsNPs) were synthesized by a facile reduction method using heparin as the protecting/stabilizing agent. The oxidase-like activity of heparin–OsNPs, however, turned out to be low, which somewhat limits their application. We discovered that Hg2+ can significantly/specifically boost the oxidase-like activity of heparin–OsNPs via electrostatic interaction. The oxidase-like activity of heparin–OsNPs toward the oxidation of the substrate, 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine, by dissolved O2 was found to increase by 76-fold in the presence of Hg2+. More significantly, heparin in heparin–OsNPs could be specifically hydrolyzed into small fragments in the presence of heparinase, which resulted in the weakening of the oxidase-like activity of Hg2+/heparin–OsNPs. On the basis of these findings, a linear response of the sensor for heparinase was obtained in the range 20–1000 μg/L with a low detection limit (15 μg/L), which is comparable to those of other reported sensors. Further, the colorimetric sensor was employed for the detection of heparinase in human serum samples with satisfactory results. We speculate that combining such surface modification of the osmium nanozyme with a sensing element could be an interesting direction for promoting nanozyme research in medical diagnosis.

We developed a microreactor with porous copper fibers for synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a high stability and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). By optimizing synthesis conditions, including the reaction temperature, flow rate, ethylenediamine dosage, and porosity of copper fibers, the N-CDs with a high PL QY of 73% were achieved. The PL QY of N-CDs was two times higher with copper fibers than without. The interrelations between the copper fibers with different porosities and the N-CDs were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results demonstrate that the elemental contents and surface functional groups of N-CDs are significantly influenced by the porosity of copper fibers. The N-CDs can be used to effectively and selectively detect Hg2+ions with a good linear response in the 0~50 μM Hg2+ions concentration range, and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) is 2.54 nM, suggesting that the N-CDs have great potential for applications in the fields of environmental and hazard detection. Further studies reveal that the differentdorbital energy levels of Hg2+compared to those of other metal ions can affect the efficiency of electron transfer and thereby result in their different response in fluorescence quenching towards N-CDs.Keywords:microreactor;carbon dots;porous copper fibers;Hg2+detection

Photo-luminescent polymers as a kind of talent functional polymer , have been applied in various field such as bioanalysis , detection and materials. Herein we report a novel fluorescent hyperbranched aliphatic polyestertriazole via one-pot azidation and azide-alkynyl cycloaddition of propargyl (2,2-bismethylsulfinyloxymethyl)propionate, an AB 2 pre-monomer, by heat promotion at 110 °C. Under such reaction condition, the methylsulfinyloxy groups were converted into azido groups by NaN 3 , then azide-alkynyl cycloaddition simultaneously happened to give hyperbranched polyestertriazole ( hb -PETA). By the analysis of reaction kinetics monitored with proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy , the results clarifies that the whole synthesis was achieved efficiently. The obtained hb -PETA exhibited the blue fluorescence in both bulk and solution upon the exposure of UV light although it had no conventional fluorescent group. The emission wavelength and intensity of hb -PETA in solution were dependent on the solvent and the addition of metal ions . Among various metal ions, hb -PETA was particularly sensitive to Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in water, and showed the excellent quenching efficiency for Hg 2+ . Moreover, the Hg 2+ detecting in water could be achieved highly rapidly and sensitively. We believe this kind of functional polymer could be used in other biological and material area.

Milk is often polluted by heavy metal ions due to the growing environment pollution, but few methods have been developed to remove the heavy metal ions. Here a non-toxic sorbent, namely di-acrylated Pluronic P123 (P123-DA) hydrogel, was fabricated for removal of Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ from milk without impairing their nutritive contents. This hydrogel possessed high mechanical stress and maximum adsorption capacity of 35.2 and 53.9 mg/g for Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . The removal ratio of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ by P123-DA hydrogel respectively reached 85.3% and 81.9% for the polluted whole milk while was individually 86.3% and 83.8% for the skim milk. Interestingly, the treatment by P123-DA hydrogel didn’t significantly reduce the main nutritive contents in milk. Such hydrogel will be a recyclable, safe and effective tool for reuse of milk that polluted by heavy metal ions.

Mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) is one toxic metal ion existed in aquatic ecosystems which would seriously damage human central nervous system and other organs. So developing an approach to sensitively detect Hg 2+ in our living environment is urgent and important. In this work, a novel surface enhancement Raman spectrum(SERS) sensor is fabricated for high selective and ultrasensitive detection of Hg 2+ in aqueous solution, based on a stable thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) structure and the π - π interaction between single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Herein, SWCNTs act as Raman labels to produce characteristic Raman peaks which can be a beacon to quantitative detect Hg 2+ . In the presence of Hg 2+ , the ssDNA can capture Hg 2+ forming T-Hg 2+ -T structure, which makes SWCNTs leave the hot spots of the SERS-based biosensor. With this design, the Raman intensity of SWCNTs decreased with the increasing concentration of Hg 2+ . At the same time, CoFe 2 O 4 @Ag as active SERS substrates can effectively enhance sensitivity and uniformity of the biosensor through aggregation by magnet. Under optimal conditions, this proposed biosensor can detect Hg 2+ at a range from 1 pM to 100 nM with a detection limit of 0.84 pM. With the advantages of good sensitivity, selectivity, simplicity and rapidity, the biosensor is potentially suitable for monitoring of Hg 2+ in environmental applications.

Tannic acid (TA) film covered magnetic microspheres (Fe 3 O 4 @TA–Fe 3+ ) was synthesized and applied for removal of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ from aqueous solution. The resulted Fe 3 O 4 @TA–Fe 3+ was characterized with thermo-gravimetric analysis, vibrating sample magnetometer, transmission electron microscope, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The adsorption of pollutants was pH dependent because the complexation of TA with Fe 3+ was disassembled at low pH. The composites showed high maximum adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ up to 1115.3 mg/g and Hg 2+ to 279.4 mg/g. Furthermore, the Fe 3 O 4 @TA–Fe 3+ composites could be easily separated from the solution by a magnet after adsorption because of the excellent superparamagnetic property. Thermodynamics study indicated that the adsorption of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ on Fe 3 O 4 @TA–Fe 3+ sorbents was spontaneous, chaotic degree decreasing and endothermic process. The present results warrant the promising application of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @TA–Fe 3+ composites for removal of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ from contaminated water, and this study is the first application of TA film in environmental remediation.

Efficient and low-concentration detection of heavy metal ions is crucial for healthcare and environmental monitoring. Traditional fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors face challenges in detecting trace heavy metal ions due to limited sensitivity and the need for complex specific modifications. To overcome these challenges, an innovative electrochemical and optical dual-mode fiber optic sensor for in situ, real-time detection of trace mercury ions is proposed in this paper. The sensor utilizes a reflection-type fiber optic probe coated with thin gold (Au)/indium tin oxide (ITO) film and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), enabling simultaneous electrochemical and optical interrogation. The coupling effect between the SPR of thin film and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of AuNPs significantly improves optical sensitivity, with AuNPs also offering additional active sites for the redox reaction of Hg2+. The ITO film not only facilitates the stripping of Hg2+, leading to sharper stripping peaks but also enhances the ability of the sensor to rapidly respond to anomalous potential changes. Experimental results show that the sensor has a wide dynamic detection range from 10−10 M to 10−5 M, with a limit of detection reaching the pM level. The dual-mode functionality allows the simultaneous collection of voltage, current, and optical information, enabling cross-validation of the detection results and improving the accuracy and reliability of detection.

In this paper, the chain-like core–shell structure Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite nanoparticles were synthesized by a two-step coating and following crosslinking glutaraldehyde on chitosan shell. The composite particles showed nearly monodisperse
105 sized particles with a core diameter of 80 nm and chitosan shell thickness of 12 nm. The synthesis conditions of the product were studied, and the morphology and properties of the composite nanoparticles were characterized by IR, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDS and VSM. The adsorption properties of
Hg2+, Pb2+ or Cu2+ ions on Fe3O4, Fe3 O4@SiO2 and the composite particles were in detail studied using the colorimetric method based on forming colored mercuric dithizone, rhodamine-Pb2+ complex and DDTC-Cu(2+)
complex. The results showed, adsorption isotherm, kinetics and separation coefficient of heavy metal ions on these three magnetic nanoparticles were concerned with pH, metal ions’ electronic configuration, silica coating and chitosan shell respectively. In addition, the recycle efficiency
was also studied. The findings demonstrated that Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite nanoparticles have great application value in the adsorption and separation of heavy metal ions.

The detection of mercury, one of the ten most dangerous chemicals, is significant to provide helpful information for assessing mercury toxicity and health risks. However, it is a challenge to explore simple, sensitive, accurate, and cheap Hg 2+ detection methods. Noble metal nanomaterials are used for Hg 2+ detection by the colorimetric method widely. Still, the pure noble metal materials’ detection limit of Hg 2+ is high, and sensitivity enhancement usually requires further complex modification. Here, we use a facile one-step route to synthesize ultra-thin two-dimensional palladium nanosheets (PdNS), which have high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg 2+ detection by colorimetric method with a low detection limit (0.55 ppb). The detection of Hg 2+ by PdNS involves multiple mechanisms, including the formation of amalgam and PdO to improve the peroxidase-mimic activity of PdNS and PdNS motor function to increase its collision probability with the detection reactant. The PdNS can be used to detect Hg 2+ in various actual samples. The detection results are highly consistent with the data obtained by the atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS). Then, we developed a Hg 2+ detection kit, which can realize simple, sensitive, and accurate Hg 2+ detection by naked eye or cellphone at a meager cost (0.3 dollars each sample).

A novel rhodamine-benzothiazole fluorescent chemosensor, bridged with a thiophene unit, is designed for the turn-on detection of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ . Noteworthy findings include impressively low limits of detection (0.007 μM for Hg 2+ and 0.013 μM for Cu 2+ ), a determined sensing mechanism involving spirolactam ring opening and hydrolytic cleavage, consistent 1:1 binding stoichiometry for both metal ions and an optimal pH of around 6. The sensor’s practical applicability is demonstrated through successful implementation in HeLa cells and zebrafish, along with effective analyte recovery in various water samples. This work advances the field by providing a highly sensitive and versatile chemosensor for environmental and biological applications.

Development of a new sensor for the simple detection of Hg 2+ , which improves on the shortcomings of conventional mercury detection. The size of the nanogold(AuNPs) particles was controlled by controlling the amount of sodium citrate and gold salt. AuNPs was also functionalized by arginine and melamine. The functionalized nanogold was sensitive and selective for Hg 2+ . It is also useful in real water samples. The 32 nm nanogold modification had the lowest limit of detection (LOD). The melamine-functionalized 32 nm AuNPs had a LOD of 4.17 μmol/L, which was better than the arginine-functionalized 32 nm AuNPs with a LOD of 5 μmol/L.

Mercury(II) is among the most hazardous heavy metal pollutants, necessitating the development of fluorescent sensors that are efficient, highly sensitive, and suitable for practical applications. Herein, we present a novel boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (B,N-CDs) probe prepared via a hydrothermal method using borax, ethylenediamine, and citric acid as starting materials. Relative to previously reported B,N-CDs, our probe features a markedly higher fluorescence quantum yield (35.6%) and an ultralow detection limit of 10.5 nM for Hg 2+ , well below the WHO guideline for drinking water. The probe also exhibits excellent selectivity for Hg 2+ over competing metal ions, accompanied by a strong fluorescence quenching response. A combination of fluorescence lifetime measurements, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and thermodynamic analysis reveals a static quenching mechanism mediated by photoinduced electron transfer (PET), which is entropy-driven and spontaneous. Beyond its outstanding analytical performance, the probe displays superior solubility in water and alcohols, low cytotoxicity (confirmed by L929 cell assays), and good biocompatibility in zebrafish fluorescence imaging. Furthermore, successful Hg 2+ detection in real water samples validates its practical utility. Taken together, the high quantum yield, ultralow detection limit, well-defined PET-based static quenching mechanism, and multi-level bioimaging validation set this B,N-CDs probe apart from existing carbon-dot sensors and highlight its potential for environmental and biological mercury monitoring.
