Hierarchical Ni 0.66 Co 0.34 -LDH heterostructures are designed as electrode materials in this work. The ultrathin Ni 0.66 Co 0.34 -LDH nanosheets are decorated uniformly on Cu(OH) 2 nanowire backbones, providing richness active sites, open ion channel, and conductive- and binder-free heterostructure for electrochemical energy storage . At the current density of 5 mA cm −2 , the as-prepared Ni 0.66 Co 0.34 -LDH heterostructure electrode displays a specific capacitance of 17740 mF cm −2 (2367.3 F g −1 ), higher than that of Ni–Co LDH directly deposited on copper foam substrate (1390 mF cm −2 ). Additionally, an excellent rate capability (13880 mF cm −2 vs 20 mA cm −2 ) and remarkable cycling stability (88.9% vs 10 000 cycles) are obtained. Furthermore, the maximum energy density can arrive to 0.813 mWh cm −2 (power density of 8 mW cm −2 for the assembled solid-state Cu(OH) 2 @Ni 0.66 Co 0.34 -LDH//AC asymmetric cell. These prominent performances might be aroused by its special hierarchical core/shell heterostructures. These findings properly promote the design novel nanostructures for the advanced electrodes.

New inorganic-organic transparent composite films of the formula (Zn 2 Al-LDH/ZnTPPS) n were fabricated using exfoliated cationic Zn 2 Al layered double hydroxide (Zn 2 Al-LDH) nanosheets and anionic meso -tertra(4-sulfophenyl) zinc porphyrin (ZnTPPS) through an electrostatic layerbylayer self-assembly method. The resulting composite films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that the films have relatively smooth and orderly surfaces, with the large ring plane of the porphyrin molecules vertically aligned LDH nanosheets and can grow in a nearly linear fashion with increasing the deposition cycles. Z-scan measurements, which were conducted under laser irradiation at a wavelength of 532 nm pulse width of 6 ns, repetition rate of 10 Hz and light intensity at focus E of 10 μ J, revealed that the composite films have notable saturation absorption ( cf. , ZnTPPS in solution shows reverse saturation) and optical nonlinear self-defocusing behavior with the nonlinear optical absorption coefficient β refractive index n 2 , and third-order NLO susceptibility χ (3) of the films increasing with the increase in number of layers of films ( χ (3) value is up to 7.86 × 10 -11 esu when n = 40), implying the NLO responses could be modified by fine tuning the thickness of composite films.

A bifunctional electrocatalyst with high efficiency and low costs for overall water splitting is critical to achieving a green hydrogen economy and coping with the energy crisis. However, developing robust electrocatalysts still faces huge challenges, owing to unsatisfactory electron transfer and inherent activity. Herein, NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2heterojunctions have been designed as freestanding bifunctional electrocatalysts to split water, exhibiting enhanced electron transfer and abundant catalytic sites. The optimum NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2electrocatalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 380 mV at 10 mA cm−2for overall water splitting and superior electrocatalytic performance in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). Specifically, the electrocatalyst requires overpotentials of 76 and 286 mV at 10 mA cm−2for HER and OER, respectively, in alkaline electrolytes, which originate from the synergistic interaction among the facilitated electron transfer and increasingly exposed active sites due to the modulation of interfaces and construction of heterojunctions.

To address the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a potential approach is to rationally design and fabricate extremely effective single atom catalysts (SACs). Using an appropriate matrix to stabilize single-atom active centers with optimal geometric and electronic structures is crucial for enhancing catalytic activity. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of Ir single atoms on NiFeZn layered double hydroxide (Ir-SAC/NiFeZn-LDH) electrocatalyst for highly efficient and stable OER. It is investigated that the NiFeZn support exhibits abundant defect sites and unsaturated coordination sites. These sites function to anchor and stabilize single Ir single atoms on the support. The strong synergetic electronic interaction between the Ir single atoms and the NiFeZn matrix resulted in remarkable OER performance of the as-fabricated Ir-SAC/NiFeZn catalyst. With a loading Ir content of 1.09 wt.%, this catalyst demonstrates a highly stable OER activity, with an overpotential of 196 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 35 mV·dec −1 for the OER in a 1 M KOH solution. These results significantly surpass the performance of the commercially available IrO 2 catalyst.

Melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) are a type of electronegative compound that can be used as photothermal agent for cancer treatment. Nevertheless, the agglomeration of MNP, which is one of the limitations in practice, contributes to the instability of MNP. Pristine layered double hydroxide (LDH), as a kind of positive inorganic material when there exist no other cargo between its layers, can accommodate electronegative molecules between its layers to endow them with stable properties. Hence, in this study, electronegative MNP was intercalated into LDH lamellas via ion-exchange method to obtain the stable original photothermal agent LDH/MNP, solving the tough problem of MNP’s agglomeration. The surface morphology, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectra affirmed the successful intercalation of MNP between LDH lamellas. The Z-average particle sizes of LDH/MNP on day 0, 7 and 14 were measured as 221.8 nm, 227.6 nm and 230.5 nm without obvious fluctuation, while the particle sizes of MNP went through dramatic enlargement from 105.8 nm (day 0) to 856.1 nm (day 7), indicating the better stability of LDH/MNP than MNP. The typical polymer dispersity index (PDI) values on day 0, 7 and 14 verified the better stability of LDH/MNP, too. Photothermal properties of LDH/MNP were assessed and the results ensured the representative photothermal properties of LDH/MNP. The fine cytocompatibility of LDH/MNP was verified via cytotoxicity test. Results confirmed that the agglomeration of MNP disappeared after its intercalation into LDH and LDH/MNP possessed fine stability as well as typical photothermal property. The intercalation of MNP into LDH gave the photothermal agent MNP a promising way for its better stability and long-term availability in photothermal treatment.

In the domain of supercapacitor investigation, nickel cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH), regarded as a promising battery material, have garnered significant attention. However, the inherent drawbacks of low conductivity and pronounced agglomeration in single-component NiCo-LDH hinder the achievement of satisfactory overall performance. Thus, a key challenge remains in the rational design of multi-component composite materials incorporating NiCo-LDH, carbon materials, and conductive polymers to enhance their electrochemical properties. In this study, we successfully fabricated multishell hierarchical fiber films of GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH through simple wet-chemical approach. This novel architecture features graphene-coated electrospun carbon nanofibers (GCNF) serving as a self-supporting carbon framework, polyaniline (PANI) acting as the conductive layer, and NiCo-LDH contributing a high faraday capacity. Utilizing the enhanced cooperative effects between the various components, the enhanced GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH electrode exhibits remarkable specific capacity (347.1 mAh g -1 , 2499 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 ) alongside exceptional rate performance (maintaining 56.5 % capacity at 20 A g -1 ). Moreover, when an asymmetric supercapacitor (ACS) is constructed using active carbon (AC) as the cathode and GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH as the anode, it demonstrates remarkable energy storage capabilities. Specifically, it achieves an impressive energy density of 43.8 Wh kg -1 , along with a high power density of 937.5 W kg -1 . Additionally, it exhibits exceptional durability, with a capacitance retention of 88.8 % even after 2000 cycles. This study presents a novel approach for designing high-performance core-triple-shelled hierarchical materials in the field of energy storage devices.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves a four-electron transfer and slow kinetics, requires an efficient catalyst to overcome the high energy barrier for high-performance water electrolysis. In this paper, a novel Ni3S2@V-NiFe(III) LDH/NF catalyst was prepared via a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The constructed heterostructure of Ni3S2@V-NiFe(III) LDH increases the specific surface area and regulates the electronic structure. Furthermore, the introduction of the V element forms an electron transport chain of Ni-O-Fe-O-V-O-Ni, which optimizes the binding energy between metal active sites and oxygen evolution reaction intermediates, accelerates electron transfer, and improves self-reconstruction. With this dual regulation strategy, Ni3S2@V-NiFe(III) LDH/NF exhibits exceptional OER performance with an overpotential of 280 mV at 100 mA/cm2and a Tafel slope of 45.4 mV/dec. This work develops a dual regulation strategy combining heterostructure formation and the doping effect, which are beneficial in the design of efficient OER catalysts.

Currently, hydrogen production through water electrolysis stands out as one of the most promising methods. However, the efficiency of hydrogen production is limited by the anodic oxygen evolution reaction , which involves a four-electron transfer process. Therefore, the development of an efficient and durable anode catalyst is important to reduce energy consumption and increase the hydrogen production rate. Herein, the Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanopillar structures were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process on nickel foam (NF). Subsequently, nanosheets of CoFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) thin films were deposited to obtain the CoFe-LDH/Mo-Ni 3 S 2 /NF catalyst. Physical characterization results revealed polycrystalline properties of the CoFe LDH nanosheets , while a non-homogeneous interface was also formed with Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanopillars. The contact angle verified the excellent hydrophilicity , which allowed the rapid release of oxygen bubbles. In terms of electrocatalysis , the catalyst exhibited an overpotential of only 227 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and demonstrated remarkable current density retention after 100 h. The catalyst was also characterized by good retention of the current density at 10 mA/cm 2 . This work provided the strategy for designing efficient, inexpensive and durable catalysts.

The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

The electrocatalytic reduction of NO2– (NO2RR) holds promise as a sustainable pathway to both promoting the development of emerging NH3 economies and allowing the closing of the NOx loop. Highly efficient electrocatalysts that could facilitate this complex six-electron transfer process are urgently desired. Herein, tremella-like CoNi-LDH intercalated by cyclic polyoxometalate (POM) anion P8W48 (P8W48/CoNi-LDH) prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal–exfoliation assembly method is proposed as an effective electrocatalyst for NO2– to NH3 conversion. The introduction of POM with excellent redox ability tremendously increased the electrocatalytic performance of CoNi-LDH in the NO2RR process, causing P8W48/CoNi-LDH to exhibit large NH3 yield of 0.369 mmol h–1 mgcat–1 and exceptionally high Faradic efficiency of 97.0% at −1.3 V vs the Ag/AgCl reference electrode in 0.1 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH = 7) containing 0.1 M NO2–. Furthermore, P8W48/CoNi-LDH demonstrated excellent durability during cyclic electrolysis. This work provides a new reference for the application of POM-based nanocomposites in the electrochemical reduction of NO2– to obtain value-added NH3.

Lost circulation presents a complex challenge in drilling operations. Ascribed to the favorable remaining in fracture, strong resistance to efflux, and entire gel block rather than individual particles, the self-healing gels have been broadly applied as lost circulation material (LCM). In this study, we utilized layered bimetallic hydroxide (LDH) as a dynamic crosslinking agent to synthesize a novel nanocomposite (NC) gel through in-situ polymerization following the stripping of LDH in acrylic acid (AA) solution. LDH/PAA NC gels exhibit excellent self-healing properties, rheological strength, mechanical properties and adhesion properties, with these attributes being influenced by the LDH content. At 110 °C, the optimal LDH/PAA NC gel rapidly self-healed in bentonite mud within 1 h, revealing storage modulus (G′) of 4041 Pa, tensile strength of 8.04 kPa, and adhesion strength of 2.1 kPa. Visual plugging tests revealed that the LDH/PAA NC gel could withstand pressures up to 4 MPa, surpassing the capabilities of MA gel, which lacked self-healing properties. These findings highlight the potential of LDH/PAA NC gels as efficient LCM, offering a promising solution for controlling lost circulation during drilling operations.
