In this work, a novel carbon-based hydrotalcite-like compounds materials (LDO-SBCs) were prepared by coupling layered double hydroxides (LDHs) conditioning and pyrolytic carbonization , and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurements. The synthesized LDO-SBCs composites were used in wastewater treatment for simultaneous removal of phosphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The adsorption of DOM and phosphate were well conformed to pseudo-second-order mode. Adsorption equilibrium was better fitted by Langmuir model for phosphate, while Freundlich model for DOM. Compared with the raw sludge carbon, the removal efficiency of DOM and phosphate by LDO-SBCs were increased by 8% and 13%, respectively. Based on the fluorescence spectrum and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), LDO-SBCs performed well in promoting the removal of protein substances (TPN and APN). Pore filling, hydrogen bonding , electrostatic adsorption and surface complexation might be dominant in the adsorption of DOM, while, surface complexation and ion exchange between the LDO layers were mainly responsible for the adsorption of phosphate. The difference of adsorption capacity of LDO-SBCs was related to the superior channel structure of composite materials and the composition of interlayer anions of LDO.

Interfacial and interlayer interactions between layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and nucleic acids offer LDHs great potential to absorb and detect nucleic acids. Herein, we demonstrate a simple, rapid, and versatile fluorescent sensing platform based on two-dimensional LDHs and exonuclease I (Exo I) for the selective analysis of DNA and microRNA. ZnNiAl-LDHs were utilized as quenchers for FAM labelled on single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probes via dynamic quenching with high fluorescence quenching ability. The quenching mechanism was explored by means of spectral analysis, characterization experiments, DNA adsorption and desorption studies, zeta potential analysis, and molecular dynamics simulations. The driving forces for the adsorption of LDHs toward fluorophore-labelled nucleic acids were confirmed to be electrostatic interaction, van der Waals force, and anion exchange for the first time. In order to distinguish the formed target/probe duplexes from FAM-ssDNA probes, Exo I was introduced to specifically hydrolyze FAM-ssDNA probes. The fabricated fluorescent sensing platform for nucleic acids detection shows a low detection limit of 0.08 nM. Finally, this sensor was effectively utilized for the detection of DNA and microRNA in actual biological and environmental samples, achieving recoveries ranging from 96.4 % to 105 %, indicating high accuracy. This work proposed a promising sensing platform for sequence-specific nucleic acids detection, and provides a new perspective on two-dimensional LDHs as structural supports and biomolecular reservoirs for biomedical applications.

3.25 mg g −1 capacity at ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 474.6 and excellent cycling use. • AlLi-LDHs were confined in SBA-15 pores via solvent evaporation-induced strategy. • Si-O-Al/Li interface increases electron density, boosting electrostatic adsorption. • Hydration-shell sieving effect excludes Mg 2+ , Na + , K + for selective Li + adsorption. The sustainable extraction of lithium from salt lake brines featuring high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios poses a severe technical bottleneck that limits the high-efficiency utilization of global lithium resources. Herein, a novel pore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 adsorbent (SEI-AL/SBA-15-B) is rationally constructed via a solvent evaporation-induced method to break this limitation, which directs the exclusive and uniform growth of AlLi-LDH nanosheets inside the ordered mesochannels of SBA-15 rather than on the external surface. This architecture delivers three synergistic effects: (i) physical confinement suppresses nanosheet agglomeration, maximizing accessible active sites; (ii) interfacial Si-O-Al/Li covalent bonds reconstruct the local electronic structure, lowering the DFT-calculated adsorption energy of Li + (H 2 O) 4 from −1.61 eV (pristine AlLi-LDHs) to −3.06 eV; and (iii) a hydration-shell sieving effect, governed by the interplay of geometric radius and dehydration energy, efficiently excludes competing Mg 2+ , Na + and K + . The optimized adsorbent achieves a Li + uptake of 10.52 mg g −1 within 1 h in 800 mg/L LiCl solution (equilibrium capacity 12.11 mg g −1 at 4 h). Impressively, a capacity of 3.25 mg g −1 is preserved at an ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio (474.6), which surpasses most reported AlLi-LDHs adsorbents. Normalization to the active LDH mass shows that SEI-AL/SBA-15-B exhibits a 2.85-fold higher capacity than pristine AlLi-LDHs, proving that the enhanced performance originates from improved active-site utilization rather than higher LDH loading. The adsorbent also demonstrates excellent stability over eight adsorption–desorption cycles. This work establishes mesopore confinement engineering as a powerful platform to overcome the inherent limitations of layered double hydroxide adsorbents, enabling sustainable lithium extraction from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brines. AlLi-LDHs were confined within SBA-15 mesopores by solvent evaporation-induced method to form SEI-AL/SBA-15 composite adsorbent. The mesoporous confinement effect suppresses the agglomeration of AlLi-LDHs, reconstructs the Si-O-Al/Li interfacial electronic structure to enhance electrostatic adsorption and coordination bonding capability, and reinforces size sieving by blocking large-sized competing hydrated ions. These synergistic effects enable SEI-AL/SBA-15-B high lithium adsorption capacity and ultrahigh selectivity in brine. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Two-dimensional ultrathin Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet was fabricated by topotactic sulfurization process using trimetallic ZnCdAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursor and thiourea as sulfur source. A series of characterizations were conducted to investigate the structure and properties of Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet. The band gap engineering of Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet can be tuned by the composition of LDH precursor, keeping balance between photo-absorption ability and flat band potential. Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet possessed exposed (111)ZB or (002)WZ polar facet. Zn 0.67 Cd 0.33 S nanosheet displayed not only the highest photocatalytic hydrogen-generation activity under visible light irradiation (6.69 mmol h −1 g −1 ) without cocatalyst , but also outstanding stability after several cycles. In spite of the poor surface area of the nanosheet, it can be concluded that the carrier separation and transport rate of Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet significantly enhanced, rendering photogenerated carriers transport across the polar facet. This can be attributed to the photogenerated electron/hole exclusively delocalized distributed on the metal/sulfur ions, respectively. This work presents a strategy to fabricate highly efficient Zn x Cd 1-x S nanosheet from LDH precursor, which is a simple, low-cost and environmentally friendly process.
