Nanohybrids of graphene-decorated carbon-coated LiFePO 4 nanospheres are prepared using a ball milling-assisted rheological phase method combined with a solid-state reaction. The hybrids are characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM , HRTEM , XPS, Raman and TGA, and their electrochemical properties are studied by CV , EIS and galvanostatic charge-discharge. The experimental results exhibit that multilayer graphene films are decorating carbon-coated LiFePO 4 nanospheres without stacking, which results in an abundance of mesopores constituting a unique 3D “sheets-in-pellets” and “pellets-on-sheets” conducting network structure. This structure highlights the improvements of the rate and cyclic performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, because the highly conductive and plentiful mesopores promote electronic and ionic transport. As a result, the hybrids with approximately 3 wt% graphene exhibit an outstanding rate capability with an initial discharge capacity of 163.8 and 147.1 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C and 1 C, and the capacity is retained at 81.2 mA h g −1 even at 20 C. Moreover, the composites also reveal an excellent cycling stability with only an 8% capacity decay at 10 C after 500 cycles.

Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is considered as an efficient and energy-saving method for preparing LiFePO4/C composite material with the nanostructure (Nano-LiFePO4/C). In this study, Nano-LiFePO4/C cathode material was prepared using SCS using a cost-effective combination of urea and sorbitol as mixed fuels. The effect of mixed fuels on combustion behavior and microstructure as well as on electrochemical performance was studied using XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, and electrochemical characterization methods. Multiple characterization results indicated that the maximum temperature (Tm) and particle size were influenced by the usage of urea and sorbitol. The sample derived under optimum conditions exhibits a mesoporous nanostructure with a large surface specific area and attractive electrochemical performance with a discharge capacity of 153.5 mAh/g at 0.1 C, which shows strong potential for commercial applications in the future.Keywords:LiFePO4;cathode materials;solution combustion synthesis;electrochemical performance;mixed fuels

Xanthan Gum (XG) is systematically investigated and employed as water soluble binder for LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode in Li-ion batteries. XG binder exhibits good thermal stability and processes abundant functional groups such as carboxyl and hydroxyl, displaying a better adhesion strength of 0.085 N cm −1 than sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, 0.050 N cm −1 ), but inferior to polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF, 0.170 N cm −1 ). The Rheology test reveals that the viscosity of LFP slurry prepared with XG binder is higher than that of PVDF, resulting in a better dispersion of LFP and carbon black particles. The electrochemical performances of LFP-XG electrode are investigated and compared with those of aqueous CMC and conventional PVDF binder. LFP-XG displays better cycle stability and rate performance than PVDF, comparable to CMC, which retains 55.3% capacity of C/5 at 5 C as compared to PVDF (34.8%) and CMC (57.8%). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows that LFP-XG has smaller redox polarization and faster lithium diffusion rate than PVDF while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement at specified intervals reveals its more favorable electrochemical kinetics than that with PVDF, similar to CMC, thus better rate capability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displays that LFP-XG has a more homogenous distribution of LFP and conductive carbon black particles with XG before cycling and better maintains its structure integrity after 100 cycles than that of PVDF. Furthermore, LFP-XG is observed to process a high ionic conductivity supported by dQ/dV profiles.

Semi-solid lithium slurry battery combines the advantages of the high energy density of lithium-ion battery and the flowability of flow battery electrodes and has attracted attention in energy storage. Elucidating the heat generation during cycling is crucial for evaluating the safety. However, there is a relative lack of research in this field of semi-solid lithium slurry battery. Herein, the heat generation of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) semi-solid lithium slurry battery during cycling under specific cycling protocols is investigated in this work. The results show that the battery has lower heat generation when cycling at an ambient temperature of 35–50 ℃ and a charging cutoff voltage below 4.0 V, meanwhile, it maintains considerable capacity. However, when the charging cutoff voltage exceeds 4.4 V, the cyclic heat generation of the battery increases significantly, and the capacity attenuates significantly. Meanwhile, the classical equation for calculating battery heat generation of lithium-ion battery is no longer reliable. This is mainly because the electrolyte content of the semi-solid lithium slurry battery is too high (over 80 %), and at high charging cutoff voltage, the side decomposition reactions of the electrolyte increase significantly. Subsequent characterization of electrode materials also confirms this inference. This study can provide a clearer understanding of the safety of semi-solid lithium slurry battery and has guiding implications for industrial applications.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is one of the most widely used cathode materials of lithium ion batteries. However, its commercial binder polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is costly, less environmental-friendly and unstable during the long cycling process because of the weak van der Waals forces between the PVDF binder and electrode materials. Herein, an aqueous binder was designed using methacrylate-modified gelatin through UV photo-crosslinking. The crosslinked network and specific functional groups (carboxyl and amino) of the gelatin binder are superior in stabilizing the LiFePO4 electrode structure during long cycles by mitigating the formation of cracks and suppressing the detachment of electrode materials from the Al current collector. The LiFePO4 electrode with gelatin binder displays a high capacity of 140.3 mA h g−1 with 90.1% retention after 300 cycles at 0.5C, which are both superior to that of the PVDF binder (only 114.4 mA h g−1 and 74.8%). This work provides a promising binder to replace the commercial PVDF binder for practical application in energy storage systems.

Olivine LiFePO4 covered flocculent carbon layers wrapped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) prepared by sol–gel method and calcination is used as the cathode material for aqueous rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (ARLBs). The phase structures and morphologies of the composite material are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanism and method through which CNTs and flocculent carbon improve the electrochemical performance are investigated in an aqueous lithium-ion battery by setting up a comparative experiment. The ARLB system is assembled using a LiFePO4/C/CNTs cathode and a zinc anode in 1 mol L−1 ZnSO4·7H2O and saturated LiNO3 aqueous solution (pH = 6), which can deliver a capacity of 158 mA h g−1 at a rate of 1C. Even at a rate of 50C, it still has a capacity of 110 mA h g−1 after 250 cycles with fantastic capacity retention (95.7%). The lithium-ion diffusion coefficient increases by an order of magnitude due to the addition of CNTs together with flocculent carbon. Four LEDs are successfully powered by the ARLBs for more than one minute to demonstrate the practical application. The excellent rate capabilities and thrilling discharge capacity at a high rate indicate that this cathode material possesses excellent electrochemical performance, and this ARLB system exhibits excellent potential as a power source for environmental applications.

Nowadays LiFePO 4 cathode develops rapidly for its advantages of long life span, low cost and non-toxicity, especially in electrical vehicle markets. Because of its stable olivine structure, LiFePO 4 is difficult to be recycled by the conventional hydrometallurgical processes as for LiCoO 2 or LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 . Pyrometallurgical processes consume much energy and release toxic gases. Herein, an effective room-temperature process based on the mechanochemical treatment is proposed to extract metals from LiFePO 4 . Spent LiFePO 4 is co-grinded with low-cost citric acid agent in a ball mill. After grinding, the mixture is dissolved in deionized water and filtrated. With addition of H 2 O 2 , the extraction efficiency of Li reaches as high as 99.35%. Conversely, Fe is hardly extracted with a low extraction efficiency of only 3.86%, indicating a selective recovery of valuable Li element. In addition, when H 2 O is used instead of H 2 O 2 , the mechanochemical reaction changes and the extraction efficiencies of Li and Fe at optimal conditions reach 97.82% and 95.62%, respectively. The Fe impurity is removed as Fe(OH) 3 precipitation by adding NaOH, and Li is recycled as Li 2 CO 3 after reaction with saturated Na 2 CO 3 at 95 °C. This simple and easily-operated process has little negative impact on the environment and has great potential in industrial applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) porous LiFePO 4 /graphene aerogel (LFP/GA) composite was successfully prepared by an in-situ hydrothermal process. In this composite, the LiFePO 4 microspheres assembled by nanoparticles were embedded in a three-dimensional framework intertwined with the graphene sheets, which acts as a bridge for transfer of electron and diffusion of lithium ion . The large specific surface of the composite structure enables the increased infiltration area and utilization of the active material. The content of the graphene sheet is analyzed and is found important for the Li-storage characteristics of LiFePO 4 . An aerogel composite with 10% of graphene displays the best electrochemical performance, with the specific discharge capacities of 168 mAh g −1 and 155 mAh g −1 at respectively 0.1C and 1C, and the capacity retains 96.3% for up to 800 cycles. This novel 3D porous aerogel composite is identified as a promising cathode material for the rechargeable Li battery, and the simple strategy may be applied to construct other high performing composite structure and materials.

The use of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) instead of those liquid ones has found promising potential to achieve both high energy density and high safety for their applications in the next-generation energy storage devices. Unfortunately, SSEs also bring forth challenges related to solid-to-solid contact, making the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface a formidable concern. Herein, using a garnet-type Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZT) electrolyte as an example, we demonstrated a facile treatment based on the dip-coating technique, which is highly efficient in modifying the LLZT/Li interface by forming a MgO interlayer. Using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a coordination polymer, uniform and crack-free nanofilms are fabricated on the LLZT pellet with good control of the morphological parameters. We found that the MgO interlayer was highly effective to reduce the interfacial resistance to 6 Ω cm2 as compared to 1652 Ω cm2 of the unmodified interface. The assembled Li symmetrical cell was able to achieve a high critical current density of 1.2 mA cm–2 at room temperature, and it has a long cycling capability for over 4000 h. Using the commercialized materials of LiFePO4 and LiNi0.83Co0.07Mn0.1O2 as the cathode materials, the full cells based on the LLZT@MgO electrolyte showed excellent cyclability and high rate performance at 25 °C. Our study shows the feasibility of precise and controllable surface modification based on a simple liquid phase method and highlights the essential importance of interface control for the future application of high-performance solid-state batteries.

Current recycling strategies for spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4)-based batteries mainly concentrate on the extraction of the high-value lithium element via metallurgical processes, leaving the leached iron phosphate (FePO4) as trash. This poses serious environmental hazards and is a significant waste of materials. In this study, a two-step strategy is proposed to controllably convert leached LiFePO4 material into a high-performance cathode material (Na3.12Fe2.44(P2O7)2) for sodium-ion batteries, which includes an elemental compensation step and a subsequent intermediate phase-guided structural transformation step. The product features well-dispersed nanoparticles with a uniform carbon coating. Furthermore, systematic in situ characterization extracts full details for the above conversion in terms of both reaction mechanisms and crystallization kinetics. The product, when used as cathode material in sodium-ion batteries, delivers exceptional capacity retention (97.5% after 800 cycles at 1 C) and excellent rate performance (a capacity of 45.7 mA h g–1 at 30 C). This approach, which produces high-value emerging materials from waste materials, is economical, simple, and scalable, offering a sustainable solution for the efficient recycling of LiFePO4-based batteries.

Bicontinuous hierarchical mesoporous LiFePO4/C (BHM-LFP/C) microbelts have been synthesized using a simple dual-solvent electrospinning method for the first time. The use of a dual-solvent is beneficial for the electrospinning synthesis, which increases the salt solubility, as well as decreases the surface tension to improve the spinnability. The sample exhibits a high reversible capacity (153 mA h g−1 at 0.5C), and achieves an excellent high rate cycling performance. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique microbelts providing bicontinuous electron/ion pathways, and the thoroughly mesoporous structure facilitating electrolyte penetration, especially for hierarchical architectures, which have three-dimensional diffusion channels for Li+. This method can be extended to fabricate other electrospun multi-element oxide cathode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brine is vital to meet the soaring demand for lithium resources to support sustainable energy development. LiFePO 4 (LFP) has emerged as a promising electrode material for electrochemical lithium recovery due to its excellent Li + selectivity and structural stability. However, its poor electronic/ion conductivity limits its application. Here we report the synthesis of N-doped carbon coated LFP composite materials (LFP@NC) using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source for efficient lithium extraction. The results demonstrate that the optimized LFP@NC-2% electrode can achieve an excellent Li + adsorption capacity of 5.2 mmol g −1 with high cycling stability, and Li + /Mg 2+ and Li + /Na + selectivity of 310.5 and 230.7, respectively. The obtained Li + purity is 89.7% in recovered solution. This superior performance of LFP@NC-2% can be due to the role of N-doped carbon coating layer on LFP, enhancing the interfacial electron/ion transport rate to thus reduce the internal polarization, and improving the structural stability of LFP. This work would be helpful for design and development of high-performance LFP-based materials for efficient electrochemical lithium extraction from the salt lake brine.
