Cellulose nanofiber membrane modified with functionalized MIL-101 for enhanced hydrogen separation

Zhou Yichen,Hu Zhirong,Yu Mengjiao,Zhang Lu,Yao Jianfeng

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are expected to be strong competitors in gas separation membranes. Nevertheless, the poor interaction between fillers and matrix is a major restriction to prepare MMMs with a higher separation performance. In this work, MIL-101(Cr) was functionalized with −NH 2 , −COOH, and benzenesulfonic acid (−PhSO 3 H) group and these functionalized MIL-101 particles were embedded in cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to form MMMs. The interaction effect of functionalized MIL-101 with CNFs on the separation performance was discussed. After the adjustment of MIL-101-NH 2 loading, the resulting MIL-101-NH 2 /CNF membrane with 5 wt% loading exhibited enhanced H 2 permeance of ~ 2.56 × 10 − 7  mol m −2  s − 1  Pa − 1 with H 2 /CO 2 ideal selectivity of ~ 21.9.

CO2 capture and adsorption kinetic study of amine-modified MIL-101 (Cr)

Suresh Mutyala,Madhavi Jonnalagadda,Harisekhar Mitta,Raveendra Gundeboyina

MIL-101 (Cr) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and used as support to prepare a series of polyethylenimine (PEI) incorporated MIL-101 (Cr) by wet impregnation method. All characterization results revealed that the structure of MIL-101 (Cr) was well-maintained by the incorporation of polyethylenimine and confirmed the presence of PEI within MIL-101 (Cr). The CO 2 adsorption studies were carried out in a fixed bed reactor from 30 to 90 °C, 1 bar. The adsorption of CO 2 has been increased by the incorporation of PEI. It was due to the chemical interaction between the NH 2 and CO 2 groups to form a carbamate. The high CO 2 adsorption capacity 3.81 mmol g −1 was shown by 70 wt% PEI loaded MIL-101 (Cr) at 75 °C, 1 bar, because of more number of NH 2 groups and a high number of CO 2 molecules diffusion. Its adsorption capacity was 4.7 times higher than the adsorption capacity of MIL-101 (Cr) (0.80 mmol g −1 ). Moreover, in moisture condition, CO 2 adsorption capacity was increased to 4.4 mmol g −1 by the formation of ammonium bicarbonate and showed good adsorption stability throughout each adsorption-desorption cycle. The Avrami adsorption kinetic model was well fitted with experimental breakthrough CO 2 adsorption data of MIL-101 (Cr)-PEI-70. It suggested that the adsorption of CO 2 on PEI incorporated material was chemical adsorption.

Deactivation of Pd6Cr4@NH2-MIL-101 Catalyst in Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid

Youhua Zhang,Linhai Duan,Ping Yang,Dan Zhang,Xiuhong Meng

Deactivation of Pd-Cr bimetallic nanopaticles supported on NH 2 -functionalized MIL-101 in dehydrogenation of formic acid is studied. Results show that the catalyst cannot be reused more than three times because the concentration of carbon monoxide in the gaseous product will exceed 10 ppm. When the catalyst is used for the first time, the turnover frequency of the active metal Pd is the highest. With an increase of catalyst utilization times, the turnover frequency decreases. The reason for the reduction in catalyst activity is agglomeration of Pd and Cr atoms on the outer surface of the catalyst, not because the active component, Pd, is being lost.

Removal of glyphosate from aqueous solution by CuO coated MIL-101(Fe)

Dongmei Jia,Jia Guo,Jing Li,Yongzheng Duan

The composite of CuO coated MIL-101(Fe) (CuO@MIL-101(Fe)) was successfully prepared using a one-pot hydrothermal technology. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and TG technologies were used to characterize its structural, morphological, and physicochemical properties. CuO@MIL-101(Fe) exhibited a better pH adaptivity, a faster removal ratio of 95.8% for glyphosate within 10 min at pH 7, and a higher selectivity of adsorption capacity, even reaching 231.6 and 233.5 mg g −1 with coexisting Cl − (10 mmol L −1 ) and SO 4 2− (10 mmol L −1 ). The enhanced adsorption performances of CuO@MIL-101(Fe) may be caused by Cu forming a coordination interaction with glyphosate. A possible mechanism of glyphosate removal was discussed on the basis of the FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. CuO@MIL-101(Fe) composite would be more favourable to capture glyphosate from wastewater.

MIL-101 (Fe) @Ag Rapid Synergistic Antimicrobial and Biosafety Evaluation of Nanomaterials

Xi Li,Huiying Zheng,Jiehan Chen,Mengyuan Xu,Yan Bai,Tiantian Liu

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have become popular in recent years as excellent carriers of drugs and biomimetic materials, have provided new research ideas for fighting pathogenic bacterial infections. Although various antimicrobial metal ions can be added to MOFs with physical methods, such as impregnation, to inhibit bacterial multiplication, this is inefficient and has many problems, such as an uneven distribution of antimicrobial ions in the MOF and the need for the simultaneous addition of large doses of metal ions. Here, we report on the use of MIL-101(Fe)@Ag with efficient metal-ion release and strong antimicrobial efficiency for co-sterilization. Fe-based MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized, and then Ag+was uniformly introduced into the MOF by the substitution of Ag+for Fe3+. Scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to investigate the synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@Ag. The characteristic peaks of MIL-101(Fe) and silver ions could be clearly seen in the PXRD pattern. Comparing the diffraction peaks of the simulated PXRD patterns clearly showed that MIL-101(Fe) was successfully constructed and silver ions were successfully loaded into MIL-101(Fe) to synthesize an MOF with a bimetallic structure, that is, the target product MIL-101(Fe)@Ag. The antibacterial mechanism of the MOF material was also investigated. MIL-101(Fe)@Ag exhibited low cytotoxicity, so it has potential applications in the biological field. Overall, MIL-101(Fe)@Ag is an easily fabricated structurally engineered nanocomposite with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity.Keywords:metal-organic framework;Ag nanoparticles;hybrid nanoagents;antibacterial activity

Anatase TiO2@MIL-101(Cr) nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Yuan Tang,Xiaohong Yin,Manman Mu,Yue Jiang,Xiaoli Li,Hao Zhang,Tianwei Ouyang

A series of anatase TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) was synthesized using the solvothermal method for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The characterization of the composites showed that they had an octahedral shape that was similar to that of MIL-101(Cr), but the particle size was reduced to about 300–500 nm. The amount and surface area of the TiO 2 in the composites jointly influenced the photocatalytic degradation; in optimal conditions, 59 % TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) could achieve 99.4 % BPA degradation in 240 min under UV irradiation. This superior photocatalytic performance was the result of the effective separation of electron-hole pairs and a narrow band gap. Moreover, the optimal composite exhibited excellent stability, indicating its suitability for reuse. Reasonable pathways of BPA degradation were proposed based on the detected intermediates during the degradation, where the oxidative radical O 2 − played a dominant role.

Amine-Grafted MIL-101(Cr) for Superior CO2 Capture: Performance, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics

Yandi Li,Songyi Ji,Rong Zhang,Xiaoling Li,Xiandong Hao,Ning Zhao,Bo Wang,Zhiyong Xu,Wenbo Zhao

Carbon dioxide capture is critical for mitigating climate change. Amine-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) shows great promise due to its high stability and tunable porosity. We optimized its synthesis (160°C, 24 h, 150°C activation) and investigated diethylenetriamine (DETA) loading effects. The 50 wt% DETA composite achieved a CO 2 uptake of 1.25 mmol/g at 30°C and 0.1 bar, nearly six times that of pristine MIL-101(Cr). Kinetic and isotherm data were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamic analysis revealed Δ H = −54.78 kJ/mol and Δ S = −142.13 J/(mol K), confirming an exothermic, chemisorption-dominated process. We further optimized adsorption/desorption conditions, identifying optimal working temperatures of 269.47 K (adsorption) and 388.20 K (desorption). This work provides clear guidance for designing high-performance metal–organic framework (MOF)-based CO 2 capture materials.

Hydrophobically functionalized MIL-101/PEBA/PVDF composite membranes for phenol recovery by pervaporation

Zhongming Zhang,Enfang Gou,Zhiying Zhao,Jie Yao

The recovering of phenolic compounds from waste waters is of vital significance owing to their strong toxicity, carcinogenicity and potential biological accumulation. Herein, different organic ligands-functionalized MIL-101 particles were synthesized and introduced into the polyether block amide (PEBA) matrix to construct excellent mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the permselective pervaporation of phenol. A range of characterization techniques were employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of these MIL-101 based particles and the resultant membranes. It was found that the incorporation of ligand-modified MIL-101 demonstrated better interfacial compatibility and hydrophobicity than the unmodified MIL-101. The BMIL-101/PEBA-3 membrane exhibited optimum separation factor of 12.47 and corresponding total flux of 1711.71 g·m −2 ·h −1 at 50 °C for a 1000 ppm phenol solution. The separation factor increased by 4.83 % versus FMIL-101/PEBA-3 membrane. However, in comparison to the original PEBA polymer membrane, the total flux and separation factor climbed by 16.96 % and 10.95 %, respectively, whereas the MMMs introducing unfunctionalized MIL-101 (3 wt%) exhibited a reduction in the phenol separation factor. Effects of polymer solution concentration, casting solution thickness, filler content, operating temperature, and phenol concentration on membrane separation performance were explored systematically. What’s more, the BMIL-101/PEBA-3 membrane also presented outstanding long-term stability for 84 h, which also provides novel guidelines to develop high-performance membranes for phenol recovery.

Degradation of tetracycline by a novel MIL-101(Fe)/TiO2 composite with persulfate

He Lei,Zhang Yaqin,Zheng Yane,Jia Qingming,Shan Shaoyun,Dong Yanan

An effective catalyst of MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 composite was synthesized by solvothermal method. The resultant MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 was used for advanced oxidation degradation of tetracycline (TC) for the first time. The results indicated that the MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 showed higher TC degradation efficiency than pure MIL-101(Fe) or TiO 2 with the persulfate. Using 1 g L −1 MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 and persulfate at pH 7, 90.15% degradation rate was achieved under xenon lamp irradiation in 5 min for 20 mg L −1 TC. TiO 2 introduced in the composite played an important role in the degradation process, in which TiO 2 had a synergetic effect with Fe 3+ to generate Fe 2+ , Ti 3+ and radicals. Fe 2+ reacted with persulfate to produce Fe 3+ and a number of · OH to degrade TC. This reaction process was so fast that MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 with persulfate could degrade TC fairly rapidly. A novel TiO 2 -based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composite was more efficient for degrading pharmaceutical wastewater.

Anti-Influenza Virus Study of Composite Material with MIL-101(Fe)-Adsorbed Favipiravir

Mengyuan Xu,Xi Li,Huiying Zheng,Jiehan Chen,Xiaohua Ye,Tiantian Liu

Nanomaterial technology has attracted much attention because of its antibacterial and drug delivery properties, among other applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have advantages, such as their pore structure, large specific surface area, open metal sites, and chemical stability, over other nanomaterials, enabling better drug encapsulation and adsorption. In two examples, we used the common pathogenic bacteriumStaphylococcus aureusand highly infectious influenza A virus. A novel complex MIL-101(Fe)-T705 was formed by synthesizing MOF material MIL-101(Fe) with the drug favipiravir (T-705), and a hot solvent synthesis method was applied to investigate the in vitro antibacterial and antiviral activities. The results showed that MIL-101(Fe)-T705 combined the advantages of nanomaterials and drugs and could inhibit the growth ofStaphylococcus aureusat a concentration of 0.0032 g/mL. Regarding the inhibition of influenza A virus, MIL-101(Fe)-T705 showed good biosafety at 12, 24, 48, and 72 h in addition to a good antiviral effect at concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, and 3 μg/mL, which were higher than MIL-101(Fe) and T-705.Keywords:MIL-101(Fe);favipiravir;antibacteria;antiviral

Ag@MIL-101(Cr) Film Substrate with High SERS Enhancement Effect and Uniformity

Qinchao Shao,De Zhang,Cai-e Wang,Zhexiang Tang,Mingqiang Zou,Xiaobing Yang,Huaping Gong,Zhi Yu,Shangzhong Jin,Pei Liang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), owing to its high sensitivity and rapid response, has been widely used in various fields. However, it is still a challenge to prepare SERS substrates with high stability and reproducibility. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with excellent enrichment capacity and stability, provide a new material for high-performance SERS substrates. In this paper, we prepare a MIL-101(Cr) film via a secondary growth method, and Ag+ is reduced to Ag NPs by UV irradiation and attach to the film to synthesize the Ag@MIL-101(Cr) film SERS substrate. Then, we change the time of UV light illumination and the amount of silver nitrate in order to obtain the optimal substrate. The detection capability of this sample can be up to 10–11 M for 4-ATP, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is only about 5%, which demonstrates that the substrate has excellent SERS effect and reproducibility. Finally, the prepared substrate has been applied for the determination of nitrofurantoin, with its detection capability up to 10–7 M. This work proposes a simple method to synthesize MOF-based film substrate with high SERS performance and uniformity and provides potential for the sensitive detection of chemical or antibiotic residue.

Hydrothermal Catalytic Conversion of Glucose into Lactic Acid with Acidic MIL-101(Fe)

Xiaofang Liu,Zhigang Liu,Qiuyun Zhang,Hongguo Wu,Rui Wang

MIL-101(Fe) was explored for the first time for the catalytic conversion of glucose into lactic acid (LA). The as-synthesized MIL-101(Fe) was successfully characterized, and its higher specific surface area, porosity, and feasible acid properties were confirmed to determine the remarkable catalytic activity in glucose-to-LA conversion (up to 25.4% yield) compared with other catalysts like MIL-101(Cr, Al) and UiO-66(Zr). The reaction parameters including temperature, reaction time, and substrate species as well as catalyst reusability were discussed.
