As highly efficient non-precious metal-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), molybdenum carbides have attracted much attention over the phase and structure modification for the improvement of HER performances. In this work, a novel strategy is proposed to modulate phases of molybdenum carbides by boron doping, so that the HER performances can be well controlled. After B-doping, the HER activity of the as-prepared B30 catalyst is significantly enhanced with a much smaller Tafel slope of 78 mV dec−1 than that of the blank one (134 mV dec−1), which originates from the increased amount of active sites, enhanced turnover frequency of each active site and reduced electron transfer resistance. Moreover, this work could broaden our view of phase regulation and provide more possible perspectives for the application in other fields.

Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) exhibits unique competitive advantages in electrochemical water splitting due to its physicochemical properties . The high intrinsic activity is essential for the high-efficient Mo 2 C catalysts. Herein, transition metal (Ni, Co, or Fe)-Mo 2 C-embedded in N-doped carbon sheets grown on Ni foam (TM/Mo 2 C-NCSs) are synthesized to enhance the intrinsic activity of Mo 2 C by optimizing the Mo-H bonding energy through the interfacial interactions between Ni, Co, or Fe, and Mo 2 C. Owing to the superior intrinsic activity, fast ternary channels, and abundant active sites, the Ni/Mo 2 C-NCSs possess the lowest overpotential for HER (131 mV) and the Fe/Mo 2 C-NCSs show the lowest overpotential for OER (293 mV) at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The results analyzed with the Density function theory (DFT) calculation indicate that the most superior H adsorption site is at the interface between Mo 2 C and Ni hybrid. H was adsorbed on interface Mo&Ni@Ni/Mo 2 C with proper hydrogen adsorption free energies (ΔG H* ), achieving a fast desorption process in HER. This mechanism is absent in the pristine Mo 2 C catalysts. An alkaline electrolyzer with a cathode of Ni/Mo 2 C-NCSs and anode of Fe/Mo 2 C-NCSs demonstrates a small voltage of 1.66 V at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . This work offers an elaborated strategy of interface engineering to enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of Mo 2 C by accelerating H 2 desorption in HER and enhancing the catalytic kinetics of OER simultaneously.

Cost-efficient electrocatalysts derived from earth-abundant resources are urgently demanded for sustainable hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Here, biomass kapok fibers (KFs) are introduced to fabricate Mo2C@N, P co-doped carbon (Mo2C@NPC) core@shell electrocatalysts that are highly active for acidic and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). After facile prestabilization in the presence of (NH4)2HPO4 and subsequent carbonization under an inert flow, naturally available kapok fibers convert to hollow carbon microtubes with N, P co-doping, which afterward serve as the self-template and support to obtain ultrafine Mo2C nanoparticles encapsulated by N, P co-doped carbon shells. Such shells not only boost the HER performance due to the optimized electronic configuration and the promoted conductivity but also protect Mo2C from corrosive electrolytes and result in satisfactory long-term durability. In 1.0 M HClO4 and 1.0 M KOH, Mo2C@NPC exhibits excellent performance among recently reported electrocatalysts free from noble metals, featured by low overpotentials of 127 and 155 mV at the current density of −10 mA cm–2 and the Tafel slope of 63 and 64 mV dec–1, respectively. The long-term durability of Mo2C@NPC can be confirmed by both accelerated degeneration and chronoamperometric tests. Elucidating efficient electrocatalysis on biomass-derived nanomaterials, this work will inspire further exploration of efficient electrocatalysts.

In this study, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedding molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/cobalt (Co)-molybdenum (Mo) bimetallic carbide heterostructure electrocatalysts (denoted as A-B/CNFs) were prepared via electrospinning and high-temperature carbonization . Owing to the synergistic interaction between Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 and Mo 2 C components, the catalyst activity is improved. Furthermore, the rich mesoporous structure and electrical conductivity of CNFs, accelerate the reaction kinetics. As a result, the optimized Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 -Mo 2 C/CNFs-1 has excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity . With the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential is only 94 mV, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential is 295 mV in an alkaline electrolyte . Building an alkaline electrolyzer with Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 -Mo 2 C/CNFs-1 as the anode and cathode electrodes requires a low cell voltage of only 1.66 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , while maintaining ideal durability. This research offers a versatile and effective approach to creating bimetallic-based monolithic hydrolysis electrocatalysts .

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density, safety, and environmental benignity. However, their efficiency is hindered by sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Constructing heterojunction with optimized interfacial electronic structure has emerged as a promising approach to enhance ORR activity. Herein, we report a Co–Mo 2 C heterojunction encapsulated within nitrogen-doped carbon (Co–Mo 2 C@NC) derived from a ZnCoMo-based metal–organic framework (ZnCoMo–HZIF). The intimate interface between Co and Mo 2 C enables the strong electronic coupling, which induces the interfacial charge redistribution and optimizes the d-band center of Co active sites. This electronic modulation significantly enhances the oxygen intermediate adsorption and lowers the energy barrier. As a result, Co–Mo 2 C@NC delivers outstanding ORR performance with a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.85 V, a low Tafel slope of 94.7 mV dec -1 , and a good long-term stability. Additionally, Co–Mo 2 C@NC as the air cathode in a zinc-air battery exhibits superior power performance and outstanding cycling stability.

Lignin, a three-dimensional network biopolymer, presents catalytic challenges due to its recalcitrant C(aryl)–O/C(aryl)–C bonds and diverse oxygen functionalities. To address this, we engineered Mo 2 C-decorated Ni-Mo bimetallic catalysts (Ni- Mo 2 C@NC-x) via dopamine-mediated self-assembly, achieving unprecedented 2D nanosheet architectures. The optimized Ni-Mo 2 [email protected] exhibited a 10.2-fold surface area enhancement (230.4 m 2 ·g⁻ 1 vs. 22.6 m 2 ·g⁻ 1 for Ni@NC), maximizing accessible active sites. The highly dispersed MoC 2 phase enhanced the graphitization degree, facilitated electron transfer while simultaneously increased Lewis and Brønsted acid densities. Furthermore, the Mo 2 C phase effectively enriched Mo 5+ species, which promoted selective cleavage of C–O and C–C bonds via oxygen vacancy generation. The synergistic interplay between the Mo 2 C phase and Ni metal centers achieved 95.69 % lignin oil conversion with 85.25 % cycloalkane selectivity. This work establishes a multifunctional catalyst design paradigm where tailored defect-acid cooperativity overcomes lignin depolymerization-deoxygenation trade-offs.

Platinum (Pt)-based materials continue to serve as the benchmark electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet their large-scale application is limited by the inherent scarcity and prohibitive cost of platinum. Herein, we develop a Pt-based single atom catalyst comprising Pt atoms anchored in N-doped carbon (NC) encapsulated onto molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) microspheres. Structural analyses reveal an ultra-low Pt loading of 0.156 wt%, characterized by Pt–N4 configurations. Kinetic measurements show that the optimized Pt-NC@Mo2C exhibits exceptional HER performance with an overpotential of 37 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 40 mV dec−1 in acidic solution, outperforming the commercial Pt/C (20 wt%) and most reported Pt-based catalysts. Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrated that the NC layer bridges the Pt atom and Mo2C, which not only stabilizes atomic Pt active sites but also modulates their electronic structures through electron transfer from Pt to Mo2C. This unique composite nanostructure optimizes and facilitates the adsorption of H* intermediates on the Pt-NC@Mo2C, thereby enhancing its HER performance.

The direct methanol fuel cells still recognize Pt and Pd as efficient catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Our previous study demonstrated the high activity and stability of the Mo 2 C/MWCNT catalyst for electrocatalytic MOR. To further enhance the performance of Mo 2 C/MWCNT, the second metals (Ni and Co) are introduced onto Mo 2 C/MWCNT. It is found that Ni-Mo 2 C/MWCNT exhibits the highest electrocatalytic MOR activity, with a current density of 192 mA cm −2 in 1 mol/L(M) KOH + 1 M CH 3 OH electrolyte at 0.6 V (vs. Hg/HgO). Additionally, the stability of Mo 2 C/MWCNT significantly improves after Ni doping (85.61 % vs. 76.19 %). Characterization results reveal a strong interaction between Ni species and Mo 2 C, with some Ni ions doping into Mo 2 C. Furthermore, the Ni-Mo 2 C nanoparticles are evenly dispersed on MWCNT , with nanoparticle sizes ranging from 5 to 10 nm. DFT results indicate a charge transfer from Mo 2 C to Ni, resulting in the shift of the d-band center of the surface away from the Fermi level. Moreover, the interface charge transfer resistances of Ni- Mo 2 C/MWCNT significantly decreased (7.2 vs. 20.0 Ω). As a result, the electrocatalytic MOR activity on Ni- Mo 2 C/MWCNT improved compared to Mo 2 C/MWCNT.

Transition metal carbides (M x C y ) have recently emerged as promising candidates for sodium-ion battery (SIB) anodes, among which Mo 2 C stands out due to its metallic conductivity and favorable Na + migration characteristics. Nevertheless, substantial volume expansion and severe particle agglomeration during cycling impair structural integrity and cycling stability, thereby hindering its practical application. To tackle these intrinsic limitations, we synthesized morphology-modulated Mo 2 C/MXene composites by adjusting the mass ratio of Mo source to MXene precursors. One of these composites forms a 3D hierarchical porous framework, in which Mo 2 C nanocrystals are uniformly anchored on conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene sheets, and is named Mo 2 C / MXene-S. MXene acts as an effective electron-transport network and mechanical buffer to alleviate volume fluctuation of Mo 2 C and suppress structural pulverization. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the Mo 2 C/MXene-S anode exhibits reversible capacities of 406.5/143.6 mA h g −1 at 0.1/2 A g −1 and retains 296.1 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1500 cycles. Kinetic analysis shows that Na + storage is dominated by surface-controlled pseudocapacitance. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the composite optimizes Na + adsorption and reduces the diffusion energy barrier. The Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 //Mo 2 C/MXene full cell displays stable cycling, offering an effective strategy for developing high-performance SIB anodes.

Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) is recognized as a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting owing to its platinum-like electronic structure. However, its practical application is severely impeded by the agglomeration of active sites, excessively strong Mo H bonding, and poor resistance to oxidation and corrosion. To address these limitations, we propose a “template size control-multimetal coordination” strategy to fabricate nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoNi-modified Mo 2 C hollow microspheres (CoNi@Mo 2 C/C). By rationally tuning the template architecture, an optimal balance between graphitic carbon and carbon defects is achieved, enabling rapid electron transport while preserving a high density of active sites. The Co Ni bimetallic components were introduced to downshift the Mo d-band center, which weakened the Mo H bond strength and boosted the electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, Co and Ni spontaneously form an active oxyhydroxide phase through self-oxidation, which effectively protects Mo 2 C from oxidative corrosion and leaching, thereby substantially improving operational stability. Among the series, the CoNi@Mo 2 C/C catalyst synthesized with a 500 nm polystyrene (PS) template exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity and durability in 1.0 M KOH. At a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , the catalyst delivers an overpotential of 73.2 ± 2.2 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), 212.8 ± 2.8 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and a full-cell voltage of 1.515 V for overall water splitting. This work not only offers critical experimental insights but also establishes a theoretical foundation for the rational design of high-performance non-precious-metal electrocatalysts. Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) is a promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst, and conventional nanoparticles suffer from poor conductivity, large size, and low active-site utilization. Herein, a novel hollow carbon nanocage embedded with the Mo2C nanocrystal catalyst (Mo2C-HPCS) was developed through an in situ growth and self-sacrificial approach. ZnO nanospheres acted as sacrificial templates, releasing Zn2+ to coordinate with 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) for ZIF-8 assembly and evaporating during pyrolysis to generate hollow structures. Simultaneously, MoO42– species were uniformly incorporated into the ZIF-8 framework, ensuring a homogeneous Mo distribution. The resulting Mo2C-HPCS possesses a multilevel porous N-doped carbon framework (NC) that enlarges the surface area, exposes more active sites, promotes electron transport, and prevents Mo2C agglomeration. Mo2C-HPCS delivers superior HER activity with a low overpotential of 99 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory calculations confirm that Mo2C_NC synergy optimizes the hydrogen adsorption free energy, accelerating HER kinetics.

Cost-effective, high-performance electrocatalysts for sustainable water splitting is critical for advancing renewable energy utilization and facilitating large-scale green hydrogen production. Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) has emerged as a promising alternative to platinum-based catalysts due to its comparable electronic properties. However, its practical application has been impeded by inefficient synthesis methods and inadequate catalytic activity. To address these limitations, This work presents a straightforward one-step hydrothermal-carbonization to engineer a nickel-cobalt-molybdenum carbide composite anchored on cotton stalk-derived carbon (NiCo–Mo 2 C@BC). Systematic analyses reveal that dual electronic between bimetallic NiCo dopants and Mo 2 C phases, coupled with the defect-rich carbon architecture derived from cotton stalks, collaboratively optimizes charge transport kinetics and exposes abundant active sites. The integrated carbon framework further confers exceptional mechanical resilience against prolonged electrochemical stress. The catalyst achieves favorable HER performance in 1.0 mol L −1 KOH, requiring overpotentials of just 166 mV and 258 mV to drive current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 50 mA cm −2 respectively. Furthermore, the system demonstrates remarkable durability over 100 h and exhibits resilience against fluctuating currents. This work not only elucidates the crucial role of cooperative effects among transition metals in regulating the electrocatalytic performance of carbides, but also highlights the potential for converting agricultural waste into high-value electrocatalytic materials through environmentally sustainable methods.
